“The aim is to promote bold, vibrant wines truly representative of South Africa,” explains De Wet Viljoen, winemaker at Neethlingshof and vice-chair of the Pinotage Association, “wines with a significant Pinotage component that possess the kind of complexity, balance and maturation potential that will stand out on the world stage.”

n the world of wine there’s no shortage of complex blends to discover and enjoy – from the Bordeaux blends underpinned by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, to the Rhône-style red wines that pay homage to the scenic valley in southern France. Here, Syrah is the star, but is typically married with a mix of Grenache, Mourvedre, Carignan and Cinsault.
Zip Zap goes beyond
I
’ve been a huge fan of Zip Zap Circus School since I first went to see one of their shows when I was just an intern. The non-profit social school, started by Brent van Rensburg and Laurence Estève, uses the circus arts to transform lives and inspire children from all walks of life to dream big. The classes are free to all students with passion and you can see all their hard work pay off in one of their stunning productions.

But South African wineries have added their vinous contribution with the Cape blend where Pinotage brings a distinctive South African personality to the glass. The best of these Cape blends are honoured each year at the Perold Absa Cape Blend
Last year, one of the standouts among the five finalists was the Simonsig Frans Malan Cape Blend 2015. Simonsig was one of the first estates to dabble in Pinotage-based blends, and since its first vintage in 1991, has honoured the founder of Simonsig. Made up of twothirds Pinotage, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, you’ll find soft tannins supporting intense fruit notes. Though the wine can age for another five
years, 2015 was hailed by winemakers as one of the best in decades, so you’re unlikely to hold back that long. Another finalist worth discovering is the Idiom Cape Blend 2015, from the Bottega family’s estate on the slopes above Somerset West. Through the years their blend has relied on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, while the 2015 vintage swops Petit for Shiraz, adding another layer of complexity. Over in Wellington, acclaimed winemaker Corlea Fourie brings her blending skills to the fore with the Bosman Family Vineyards Erfenis 2014. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvedre and Cinsaut all come to the party here, and while it may not have the uniquely Pinotagey character of the others, it’s a fascinating blend that pairs beautifully with food. Well worth a sip. The winners of the 2018 Perold Absa Cape Blend competition will be announced on 30 August.
Zip Zap Circus School and Neighbourhood are treating two lucky readers to a double ticket each to see Journey Beyond. To enter, email your details to charisl@yourneighbourhood.co.za, with “Zip Zap” in the subject line, before 12 noon on Tuesday, 14 August. New-old gem
The legacy of Linton Park remains, just with a few new changes for the better WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE
IMAGE: SUPPLIED
S
een as a hidden gem of the Winelands, Linton Park’s legacy started in 1699, but it has only recently started to make a name for itself in the wine industry.
“We have now finally reached the point where we can go out in the world with a well-founded product base, good grape source, excellent cellar technology and a team to take on any challenge.”
This is due to the fact that a UKbased company, Camellia Plc, whose interests include tea gardens, macadamia and avocado plantations, food service and engineering, was drawn in by the farm’s rural charm and bought it in 1995.
Sustainability
“We are so proud that our wines can carry this prestigious name, rich in heritage and culture. Of the many products produced by the group, the wines are the only product that carries the name Linton Park,” comments Linton Park commercial director Herman le Roux. Camellia then took a more than 20-year journey to renovate the wine farm, and Linton Park was relaunched to the world last year. Herman adds,
Through renovating Linton Park, Camellia has maintained a focus on sustainability and conservation. This means reducing the farm’s carbon footprint by 8% over the next five years, eradicating alien trees, using recycled wastewater and solar power, and taking care of approximately 2% of the world’s threatened renosterveld. Explains Herman, “We are very jealous of this sensitive natural ecological system and are protecting it with every effort it needs to maintain this area.” Another element of their commitment to preserving the environment, a portion of the sales of their Rhino Range wines goes towards the conservation of rhinos in South Africa.
Innovation
Through rebranding has also come innovation with winemaker JG Auret taking risks to produce one-of-akind wines, like their Cafe Cabernet. Herman adds, “As a standard, most ‘coffee wines’ will have Pinotage as a base varietal, but in our case, we went for Cabernet Sauvignon. The second point of difference is the fact that JG experimented with untoasted oak which presents a unique character not found in the other socalled ‘coffee wines’.” They’ve since applied this to a Malbec as well.
Well worth a visit
Since its relaunch, Linton Park has not only taken up the challenge to take care of its environment but also the community around it with several upliftment programmes. With its Novare SA Novare Terroir Awards for the Best MCC produced in South Africa and its soon-to-be-launched 2017 Wild Fermented Chardonnay, there are plenty of reasons to visit this Wellington gem.

t was always Fritz Schoon’s vision to create what he calls a “manufactory”, an artisan production space for his breads, after famous Parisian baker Lionel Poilâne, who coined the name from “manual factory”. After leaving the Oude Bank building in central Stellenbosch where his first bakery gained a devoted following, Fritz and his wife, Chanelle, have streamlined their operation and made it happen. The airy light industrial space at the outer end of Stellenbosch’s Bird Street is as different as you can get from their previous quirky old wood interior, but the same spirit pervades it. Marble-topped tables and mismatched old chairs create a welcoming cafe space, while behind the counter – glowing with tempting pastries and shelves of freshly baked loaves – the bakery action carries on. “The idea is to centralise our production space,” says Chanelle. “The core team from our old bakery produce for all our shops. Everything is baked here and delivered daily, so you get the same quality whether you’re here or in our Somerset West cafe.”

I sampled the Essene bread toast (baked from sprouted organic wheat) piled with herby ricotta and lemony mushrooms – simple, fresh and delicious. New on the menu is a warming bowl of mieliepap, doused in burnt honey butter and toasted almonds, golden from the organic mieliemeel grown in Prieska by Bertie Coetzee, who grows all the speciality grains for Fritz. Soups in winter and salads in summer celebrate seasonal, local ingredients and showcase the different breads. Their Schoon espresso blend and all-too-tempting pastries can also be enjoyed in the De Wet Centre off Church Street, at the new Schoon croissant and coffee hatch, a tiny, riotously colourful space with a few seats in the sunny courtyard, perfect to grab a quick fix of heavenly pasteis de nata, or a luscious filled croissant.

Hermanus This coastal town has plenty to come back for WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SHUTTERSTOCK & GOOGLE MAPS *Map not to scale
T
he magical combination of Indian Ocean, Overberg Mountains and oft-cited champagne air, keeps visitors to Hermanus coming back for more. The seaside town has long been a favourite weekend destination for Capetonians, and a popular summer holiday spot for both South Africans and international visitors. It used to lapse back into a sleepy retirement haven after the busyness of the summer season, but now it has a year-round calendar of events, festivals and activities – from whale watching and wine tasting to ziplining, paragliding and shark cage diving – that keeps the community buzzing with energy every weekend of the year.
WALKER BAY
Stay
Holidaymakers tend to fall deeply in love with Hermanus, returning year after year with their families, so that buying a holiday home here often makes sense. “We bought a flat years ago as an investment, not realising what an investment it would become to our busy lives – an escape from the rat-race where we could breathe and replenish our energy,” says Ian Pilkington, who looks forward to retiring here eventually. Many choose Hermanus as a retirement home not just for the fond memories of family holidays, but for its mild climate, spectacular scenery, easy beach living and friendly supportive community.
THE HERMANUS WAR MEMORIAL
Family homes, retirement villages and apartments cluster around Walker Bay in suburbs from Voëlklip to Westcliff, spreading around the
point to join Sandbaai, Onrus and Vermont. Holiday visitors have a huge choice of accommodation – from holiday rentals to friendly B&Bs and guest houses and, at the top-end of the scale, luxury hotels such as The Marine and Birkenhead House. The sleepy retirement-town image is changing, as more young families buy into the lifestyle, with good schools in Hermanus High School and Curro Hermanus. “My family moved to Hermanus in 1999 when my mother decided it was best to raise her sons here instead of in the city,” says Wade Banks, who has lived here ever since and loves the open-air lifestyle.
Wander
The clifftop paths are an intrinsic feature of Hermanus living, meandering along the cliffs for 11km from the new harbour all the way to Piet se Bos milkwood forest behind Grotto Beach. “When in Hermanus, we walk, walk and walk,” says Ian. “The cliff path provides an unblemished view of sea and mountain and brings one close to nature like the fynbos and dassies for which Hermanus is renowned. One meets the regulars who always greet or stop to chat.” It’s easy to escape up into the mountains, starting with the Fernkloof Nature Reserve and its hiking trails. “The Three Dams is a little gem hidden in the mountains behind Voëlklip,” says Wade. “A short hike up the mountain brings you to the first dam where there’s always a buzz of people coming to swim and relax.”
Next on his list of favourite places is Grotto Beach, a beautiful blue-flag beach, long, wide and sandy with a stunning backdrop of mountains that is perfect for swimming, tanning and walking, with both dogs and owners enjoying the expansive 18km of sand stretching all the way to De Kelders. And the views everywhere take your breath away. “Sit down at Gearings Point and just take in the view, the splashing of the waves against Castle Rock and along the coastline,” suggests resident Mercia Uys. This is also a favourite spot for whale watching in winter, or drive up behind the town and discover the incredible panoramic viewpoints from Rotary Way.
Leisure
The Hermanus Whale Festival in September attracts a full house of visitors, celebrating the southern right whales who are such a feature of this coastline in the winter months. Street parades, stalls and live music fill the “village” with a lively vibe. There’s also the FynArts Festival in June, the Kalfiefees in August and Flower Fair in September. The Hemel-en-Aarde valley’s growing reputation for cool-climate wines makes for a fabulous wine route exploring farms such as Bouchard Finlayson, Creation, Newton Johnson and Hamilton Russell. And leave time to explore the charming centre of town around the old harbour with its quirky shops, charming cafes and heritage buildings, all part of Hermanus’s perennial charm.
EAT: • Bientangs Cave: seafood experience in a quirky cave setting • Harbour Rock: seafood and sushi with a fabulous view • Burgundy Seafront Restaurant: breakfast, bistro food and ocean views • Lizette’s Kitchen: elegant Asian eats • Source: breakfast and lunches with a contemporary flair • Belgian Waffles, Beers, and Burgers: sweet and savoury waffles with a view • CanD’s Kitchen: homely feel with fresh bakes and lunches • Cafe 1904: good bistro fare
NATURE: • Fernkloof Nature Reserve for fynbos and spring flowers • Three Dams for freshwater swimming • Whale watching from anywhere along the cliffs • Bird-watching on the cliffs, by the lagoon, in the mountains • Boat trips on Walker Bay • Sunset picnics on the beaches

My business neighbourhood A chic new gallery in De Waterkant is home to contemporary art and fine objects WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: TESSA BARNES
N
o 5 on Hudson is an elegant new art gallery based in the heart of Cape Town’s trendy De Waterkant. Owner Sandy de Bruin, previously owner of Country Living SA and former Miss South Africa, hand-picks pieces by renowned local artists, including Fiona Rowett, Nicole Pletts and Lesley Charnock. She draws on themes like “Women and Art” and “Shades of Grey”, focussing on the empowerment and upliftment of female artists in South Africa. Sandy tells us more about the gallery. Q: How did your business start? A: My focus has always been on beautiful spaces and attention to detail. After successfully running Country Living SA for 15 years, my husband and I moved across to London where I developed an acutely keen interest in art, inspired by my five-year intermittent travels through Europe, exploring its rich
history and diverse culture. In conceiving No 5 on Hudson, my focus is not only on beautiful and meaningful art, but how the pieces translate into our environment and how it fits into our aesthetic space. I want visitors to be embraced in an experience that heightens the visual senses in a space contemplated by soul and design. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Upon my return to Cape Town, I was inspired by our local artisans and the bustling art scene. De Waterkant is a trendy, cosmopolitan epicentre of town, and thus it seemed fitting to open up shop there. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I found the premises by complete chance after having coffee at Origins. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Positioned in the heart of De Waterkant and directly across from the Cape Quarter, No 5 on Hudson’s location worked perfectly for my vision. As it’s a relatively small space for a gallery, I had to utilise the wall space as much as possible and also had movable walls made for the hanging of more art.
Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Reflecting the high-profile location, rental prices are relatively expensive. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: It’s early days still, but we’ve experienced wonderful intake since the opening in July with a regular flow of visitors. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: There certainly is opportunity in the pipeline. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We’ll be operating online very soon. Watch this space. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: We host a selection of curated artworks from a collection of some of my favourite artists in South Africa. These include relief works in acrylic, some oil on canvas, watercolour nudes (I too have produced my own line of work presented in the gallery), bronze medium sculptures and a gorgeous array of smaller decor pieces for the home. So far all have been wonderfully received.
SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We are located next to ABE Opperman Gallery and directly opposite the car park into Cape Quarter.

medical facilities are also a drawcard there. In addition, Durban and King Shaka International Airport are only an hour away.” He believes Midlands’ retirees come primarily from Gauteng,
Dr Andrew Golding, chief executive, Pam Golding Property group, comments, “With people experiencing ever-increasing longevity and remaining active well into their senior years, there’s been an ongoing shortage of suitable, affordablypriced retirement accommodation across all sectors of the market.”
“When it comes to locations like the Winelands, many people essentially select regions similar to favourite vacation spots,” says Richard Gray, CEO, Harcourts South Africa.
Chris Cilliers, chief executive and principal, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty Winelands, says, “The current retirement market is the baby-boomer generation, very different from their traditional, conservative predecessors. Conventional retirement does not cater to their needs.”
Proximity, accessibility, affordability
Affordability has been a key driver for KwaZulu-Natal Midlands retirees, but it goes beyond that. “The KwaZuluNatal Midlands is popular because retirees are getting a relaxed lifestyle in a country environment, but still have access to amenities and leisure activities,” says Golding. Shaun du Bois, principal, Just Property Pietermaritzburg, believes, “Excellent
On the flipside, he feels that generally, retirees move inland to provinces like Gauteng to be closer to family. “Young couples moving to CBD hubs like Joburg often move away from their families to pursue careers. When their parents retire, there’s usually a great desire to be closer to their children and grandchildren.”
Far enough, but near enough “The Winelands has become an increasingly popular retirement destination because it offers a tranquil country lifestyle in scenic surrounds, yet is less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town and close to numerous popular attractions. This has led to a spike in development in this sector, with most of the new properties being more lifestyle estates than traditional retirement homes,” says Cilliers. Gray adds, “Take Paarl – it’s central, nestled in the mountains and only a stone’s throw from
Stellenbosch and the city. It also remains a lifestyle-orientated location, with abundant property options catering to all budgets.” Belinda Driemeyer, area principal, Pam Golding Properties Pietermaritzburg and Midlands, notes the advantage of proximity to the airport, not only for those with families overseas. “It’s also popular with those from Europe – the surrounds are similar to what they’re used to, but the weather’s far nicer!”
Retirement components within gated estates
Golding explains, “There’s a trend of retirees moving away from traditional retirement homes, opting for more flexible, active living within an existing residential community – for example, a retirement component or village within an established residential development or security estate which offers an array of benefits, leisure amenities, as well as on-site medical facilities or easy access to hospitals and clinics.” There’s something to be said for the normality or community aspect of multigenerational living. Driemeyer says a number of the gated estates in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands have plans for retirement components: Intaba Ridge, Pietermaritzburg, Garlington in Hilton, and – now sold out – retiree units in St John’s Village, Howick.

Life-right properties mean no maintenance, no transfer duties, and no concerns about water and rates and taxes. The Somerset has liferight cottages and apartments available. The sales office is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm. Call in today to speak to one of their sales agents.
