Waterless Wednesdays

A

ccording to the Department of Water and Sanitation, Western Cape dam levels are at a staggering 37,9% and, even though Gauteng levels have increased to 86,6% due to recent rains, the national average is only 55%.

I’d like to challenge everyone to take up the cause and use as little water as possible this Wednesday (or any other day). You can share your experience on the Neighbourhood Facebook page (facebook.com/ YourNeighbourhoodZA).

This is why it’s so important for all of us to do our bit to conserve water. In a bid to do its part and encourage others, Cape Town radio station Smile 90.4FM has initiated Waterless Wednesdays – a campaign to reduce water consumption on Wednesdays.

To find out more about Waterless Wednesdays visit the Smile 90.4FM website (smile904.fm).

The scoop Putting the art back into artisan ice cream in central Cape Town WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED & ISTOCK

W

hether you favour gelato or its close cousin, ice cream, two delightful new shops take you to the heart of artisan culture, each making a superb product from scratch using only real ingredients and no preservatives.

Moro Gelato on Long Street

You may have indulged in a Moro gelato at the Oranjezicht City Farm market, but now you can spend any weekday deliberating over a changing selection of genuine gelati at the elegant new shop in Long Street. “We believe in the full taste of real ingredients, so rich in flavour that they don’t need a bunch of toppings and hundreds and thousands,”

say co-owners Stefano Moro and Heine Van Wyk. “Just like Italian cuisine, simplicity and freshness are the key.” The signature nocciola is made from finely ground Italian hazelnuts and you can taste the difference. After an exploratory taste tour of all 14 flavours, Nocciola and Caffè claim my cone, and bustling Long Street fades into memories of an Italian piazza. The sorbets, made only with fruits currently in season, are intensely juicy. There are also some creative new additions: the Milk Tart sums up that South African favourite in one scoop, the Salty Caramel Popcorn is a light and fun twist, and the popular Marchese is a full-on dessert in itself.

Unframed on Kloof Street

2

Unframed is the vision of French-born Yann Rey, who decided that Cape Town deserved ice cream that was the real deal. The shop on Kloof Street makes everything from scratch on site and the rotating selection of 10 flavours always includes a choice of vegan alternatives made using coconut milk. “We design our own recipes and use real food ingredients,” says Yann. “Dirty Sea Salt Caramel, Burnt White Chocolate, Vegan Turmeric Latte or Vegan Jasmine Rice Lemongrass are up there in our top sellers. We’ve come up with 35 new recipes since we started.”

Franschhoek

Did you know? The Franschhoek Valley was originally called Olifantshoek (Elephant’s Corner) because of the many elephant herds that used to roam the area.

The flavours on offer change daily: a Vegan Coconut Raspberry impresses with its creaminess and intensity, a refreshing lemon and lime with basil is tempting, but for me the Dirty Sea Salt Caramel wins out even over the luscious chocolate. If you can’t decide, go for the tasting flight of five individual scoops. And optional toppings include organic super foods like raw white mulberries and spoils like cookie crunch and cardamom chocolate. Pierneef at La Motte The La Motte Museum has opened an exhibition to celebrate the life and work of Jacob Hendrik Pierneef WORDS: MOLLY FITZ-PATRICK IMAGE: SUPPLIED

I

’d heard of JH Pierneef and was vaguely familiar with his style before I had heard about this exhibition. However, I still feel that I was sadly and embarrassingly underexposed to an artist considered one of South Africa’s old masters. I jumped at the opportunity to attend the opening, and I’m so glad that I did.

La Motte, the stunning and revered wine estate in Franschhoek, launched the exhibition, A Tribute to the Life and Work of Jacob Hendrik Pierneef (18861957), at its museum on 18 January. La Motte’s relationship with Pierneef dates back to 2002 when the estate created the Pierneef Wine Collection. The year 2017 has particular significance to Pierneef as it’s the 60th anniversary of the artist’s death and the 90th birthday of his daughter, Marita. The exhibition consists of more than 100 Pierneef artworks – paintings, sketches, linocuts, illustrations and more – meticulously sourced from private and public collections to complement La Motte’s already impressive collection. Typical Pierneef works, particularly landscapes, are accompanied by more unusual, lesser-known pieces. There are many artworks he completed while travelling around Europe and Southern Africa, some of which have hardly been seen

by the public. Some of Pierneef’s tools and equipment, as well as personal memorabilia, such as a letter to his then very young daughter, Marita, have also been included. The exhibition has been brilliantly curated; you’re able to follow the development of Pierneef’s skills and style as he gets older, travels the country, the continent and the world. His exposure to new art forms is evident in the corresponding changes to his style at different times. A personal highlight of the exhibition was the quirky sketch he did of Place Du Tertre in Montmartre in 1925, which is so remarkably different from the style he’s known for. Many of the artworks have QR codes that the viewer can scan to learn more about the particular piece or about a certain event in Pierneef’s life. There is also a detailed timeline in Afrikaans and English that gives the viewer insight into the key aspects and periods the exhibition has chosen to highlight – the man, the artist, the heritage.

Goat skywalker Fairview is bringing the paddock to the people with a goat skywalk on the popular Paarl estate WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

IMAGES: SUPPLIED

The exhibition will run for the whole year and presents the perfect opportunity to visit the superb wine estate, eat at the wonderful restaurant (Pierneef à La Motte) and sample La Motte’s exceptional wines.

F

rom its cheeses to its quirky wine brands, goats have long defined Fairview estate on the slopes of Paarl Mountain. Owner Charles Back has poked fun at the over-protective French with his Goat-Roti and Goats do Roam wines (a play on the French wine regions of Côte-Rôtie and Côtes du Rhône) while the farm’s impressive Goat Tower has greeted visitors to the farm since 1981. Time for a change, thought Charles, and after an overwhelming response to having a few kids – young goats – around the tasting room last year, he decided to bring the paddock to the people with what’s billed as Africa’s first skywalk and activity play park for goats. While the kid goats hop onto surfboards, snooze in wine barrels and wander along wooden walkways under shady oak trees, human kids have the chance to feed and pet the four-legged ones. “To ensure our older goats don’t feel left out, we’ve added a skywalk from the Goat Tower into the grassy paddock, encouraging cross-generational interaction,” says Charles. There’s home-made lemonade and frozen yoghurt for sale at the paddock, but you’d do well to book a table at the Goatshed restaurant.

The new summer menu cements the restaurant’s reputation for honest country cooking, with generous portions and excellent value-formoney throughout. Ask the friendly waitrons about the daily specials. The shady terrace tables may tempt you to linger over dessert, but it’s worth stopping by the tasting room to discover Fairview’s newest wine range, Bloemcool Fontein. Named for the original title of the Fairview property, the adventurous new offering is focused on white wines, and includes skin-fermented Chenin Blanc, food-friendly Semillon and a fragrant Viognier. The austere tannins and intense fruit of the only red in the range, a single-varietal Tempranillo, will benefit from a few years in the bottle. But perhaps the most exciting wine in the range is the Méthode Cap Classique. Fairview isn’t known for its bubbly, but this unusual sparkling wine – made from 100% Viognier – is a superb summer tipple. Disgorged after just 16 months on the lees, it retains fresh apple notes on the nose and a fresh mineral finish on the palate. Perhaps you can teach an old goat new tricks.

Back home I threw together some mushrooms with pecan nuts, parsley and olive oil to make a pesto, the kids loved it, and I’d found my first product. balanced diet and food as medicine are what inspired Jules Harris to go from simply growing shiitake mushrooms to producing a whole range of healthy and delicious artisan vegan products. Jules tells us about moving The Real Food Factory’s production base to the Maker Station in Woodstock. Q: H ow did your business start? A: I’ve been involved in various aspects of the food industry my whole life. I started cultivating shiitake mushrooms on my farm in Wilderness in 2006 and was selling them at the Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market in Sedgefield. A mother with two boys going through chemo visited me at the market. She had read about shiitake mushrooms

Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: In 2014, I moved my business to Cape Town to properly launch my vegan condiment range. After having a food factory in Kommetjie for two years, I decided at the end of 2016 to move to a more premier food address, and that’s where we are now: 9 Plein Street, Woodstock. Q: H ow did you find your premises? A: T hrough word of mouth. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: I was tired of the “lonely entrepreneur’s routine” and decided to move to be around like-minded entrepreneurs. Maker Station is a shared workspace, but we have sole use of the professional kitchen and our own office.

I do, however, wish one day to have my own food building, not only to make and distribute, but also to do workshops and seminars educating and bringing people from all walks of life together through food and teaching young entrepreneurs how to start their own businesses. Q: D o you operate online as well? A: Not at the moment. I sell to about 50 beautiful artisan food stores around Cape Town and my products are on the menu at quite a few restaurants and farm stalls, too. Q: What’s your most popular item? Get out of debt and save for a better future with these simple tips WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK

W

Begin by reducing the debt you’ve built up. Start with the debt with the highest interest rate, whether it’s a credit card or store card. Second, reduce the amount of money you spend every month so you can pay off your debt.

Write it all down

To help you see exactly where you are financially, draw up a spreadsheet of income and expenditure. Keep it simple and leave nothing out. If you’re not sure how much you spend on food, entertainment and other expenses, take a month and record every single cent you spend, including how much you spend on milk and bread from the corner cafe, and the tip you give the car guard.

Try to reduce your premiums

Now that you have an accurate picture

of your expenses, which includes your “compulsory” expenses such as medical aid and car insurance, are any of these adjustable downwards? Can you get rid of any of them altogether? Take a hard look at them and stick to what you can afford. You may not be able to afford that particular cellphone contract or the luxury of a DStv subscription. Go to your service providers and your insurance broker and talk to them about reducing your premiums. They aren’t going to come to you. You’ll be amazed how much you can save – a couple of hundred rand here or there can add up to make a big difference.

Bank smart

Look at your bank statements. Look at the costs associated with them as well as the interest you’re paying. Talk to your bank and ask how you can bank smarter and find the most economical bundle for your needs. If they can’t help you then shop around. Do this annually. The more you can reduce your credit or overdraft, the better. It’s not just about lowering your debt, it’s also about reducing the interest you’re paying.

Development of Cape Town's tallest building set to begin in April

Make a fresh start hen your credit cards take on scary proportions and you have to hide your household bills, it’s almost easier to think: “I’m in too deep to resolve it.” But there are people out there who’ve looked debt in the eye and taken small steps which, bit by bit, have made big a difference.

It’s all about good management

Manage your shopping better. Plan your meals and cook in bulk if you can. Avoid impulse buys and always shop with a list and stick to it. Buy all cleaning materials, toiletries and nonperishables in bulk and even share with others, and only buy perishables once or twice a week. Examine your shopping list closely as some items aren’t necessary and are exorbitantly priced – you can do without them. If you’re living on credit or spending more than you earn, you have the power to alter your financial situation bit by bit. Other than winning the lottery, the only way to create wealth is to spend less than you earn.

evelopment of the soonto-be tallest building in Cape Town, which will cost in the region of R1,5bn, has been scheduled to begin in April this year. Although the development will take 30 months to complete, it is already over 60% sold out. Emerging market property developer Land Equity Group, headed by Stuart Chait, purchased the Old Mutual Centre and Exchange Place in Cape Town’s bustling CBD from Old Mutual Properties. The site, on the corner of Adderley and Strand streets, across from Cape Town Station, is designated to be redeveloped into the 44,000m² tower, which, at 44 storeys, will be Cape Town’s tallest

building. The building is still to be named. However, its current code name is Zero2One Tower. The development will comprise 624 apartments, 760 parking bays, retail space of 5,000m2 and a 360 degree viewing deck and restaurant at roof level which will be open to the public. Land Equity Group has appointed FWJK to co-develop the project. “This building is set to transform the Cape Town city skyline, and once complete it will mean that Cape Town finally features in the ‘top 10 tallest buildings in South Africa’. It will in fact be the same height as the Reserve Bank building in Pretoria,” says Chait.

Gauteng homeowners – both existing and aspirant – should not be daunted by the current flatlining trend in residential property prices, but rather focus on the growth of the capital portion of the investment at the time of purchase RONALD ENNIK, FOUNDER AND CEO, ENNIK ESTATES

HOT TIPS: • If you’re not a spreadsheet kind of person, find personal budgeting tools online. • You should be saving 10% to 15% of your income every month.

Sandton Central to host annual RICS Africa Summit

S

andton Central in Johannesburg will play host to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) influential annual Africa Summit from 22 – 23 February. The event, now in its third year, has established itself as a leading forum of Africa’s built environment and real estate sectors. London-based RICS is a global professional body that promotes and enforces the highest qualifications and standards in the areas of land, real estate, construction and infrastructure. As a public benefit organisation it operates in all the world’s major financial hubs in

delivering international standards and policy influence. The annual RICS Africa Summit, supported by major sponsors Colliers International and Cushman and Wakefield Excellerate, is aimed at executives, academics, government leaders and other senior professionals in the built environment, property and infrastructure sectors. It serves as a forum where common goals and a shared vision can be created through consensus and discussion. This year’s event will have a strong emphasis on rapid urbanisation in sub-Saharan Africa, the availability of land, as well as infrastructure investment on the continent.

Top City Bowl price for Higgovale property

T

he sale in December of a fourbedroom, three-bathroom house in Cape Town’s Higgovale for R21m, with the sale of the adjoining vacant land for R5m, was the highest combined selling price for the City Bowl last year. The home and the land were owned by the same person, and the sales were made by Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate in December 2016. “The exceptionally beautiful Higgovale property has panoramic views, sweeping across the City Bowl from Table Mountain’s cable car, to encompass Devil’s Peak, Table Bay, the Waterfront and Signal Hill to Lion’s Head,” says André Stassen, the agent who concluded the sales. “While the buyers were local, they spotted the property being advertised

in The New York Times by Christie’s International Real Estate.” Greeff Properties is the exclusive Cape affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate. Stassen says the profile of buyers in the City Bowl is shifting towards highearning young professionals drawn to luxury properties in the prime area. Price-wise, demand for middlerange houses in the City Bowl, priced in the R6m – R10m category will continue to be strong, and is expected to exceed supply, he says. “There has been an exponential jump in value over the past two years in this sector, with the average selling price for freehold properties in Higgovale jumping from R8,9m in 2014 to around R15m in 2016, according to Lightstone.”

T

ucked in a secluded valley beneath the Riviersonderend mountains, a short drive from Robertson, McGregor is peaceful and picturesque. First built as a settlement along a projected road to link Robertson to Cape Town via Greyton, the village looks like it was left behind in time. “I love the relaxed atmosphere and the beauty of the village and the surrounding mountains.” says Dave Magner, who moved to the area from Durban. “The community is delightful; we enjoy the mix of people in the village.” Billy Kennedy of Temenos Retreat says, “Most of the residents live here yearround and so it has a vibrant life. We are also fortunate to have Robertson only 10 minutes away – a most beautiful drive. This means that many unsightly, commercial operations have not found their way to McGregor. It is still quaint and peaceful.” The village attracts artists, retirees and creative types, so the diverse community is never dull. As well

as hikes in the nature reserves (and for dedicated hikers the stunning McGregor/Greyton trail), and visits to the wine estates, locals enjoy movies, opera and ballet screenings at Wahnfried, meditation and yoga in the serene gardens of Temenos Retreat, home matches at McGregor Rugby Club, tennis and country dancing, as well as the Saturday markets. “No story of McGregor is complete without mentioning the Poetry in McGregor weekend,” says Dave. “The annual event pulls together poets from around the country for a glorious celebration of the spoken word.” Living in a Little Karoo climate also has its attractions. “We have beautiful springs when our hills are carpeted in flowers,” says Billy. “We have hot, lazy summers when you drink chilled wine and have long siestas. Autumn brings the most beautiful golden light to the valley, and our winters offer Champagne air – and sometimes even snow.”

We have a wonderful local community. One can never be lonely in McGregor. There is something to do every night and sometimes a lot to choose from. It is not a conservative town. Many delicious, contrasting characters add the flavour to an unforgettable experience. BILLY KENNEDY, RESIDENT

THINGS TO DO: • Visit Wahnfried for movies, live music and culture. • Meditate and do yoga in the gardens at Temenos Retreat. • Hike in the surrounding nature reserves. • Attend the annual Poetry in McGregor festival in August. • Visit the Saturday Morning Market. • Visit all the art galleries and studios.

What are the best things for families on holiday in McGregor?

What are your favourite weekend things to do in the area?

What do you love about McGregor?

McGregor is a well-preserved 19th century village, unspoiled and surrounded by rolling hills and lofty mountains, and is an end destination – there is no through road and this has contributed largely to the preservation of peace and tranquillity in the village. McGregor is an ideal base for exploring the verdant Breede River Valley, which has 40 wine estates and cooperatives, Montagu hot springs, famous hiking trails and more.

Relaxing in the shade with a glass of wine with my friends, often at the beautiful How Bazaar: a decor and gift shop which also sells coffee and light lunches. We are very relaxed and laid-back here. Visiting wine farms/wineries (McGregor and Lord’s wineries). The local coffee shops and restaurants are also very popular, as is our Saturday morning market where one can buy fresh produce, olives, jams, light meals and more.

McGregor offers so much. Besides some top restaurants, we have beautiful wine farms offering excellent wines, great mountain biking and hiking, wide open spaces, an eclectic Saturday morning market and so much more. There’s a diverse array of properties from quaint country cottages with rambling gardens to grander country homes, lifestyle farms, smallholdings and commercial fruit farms.
