South Indian dining in informal tapas style, Sundoo is a lively addition to Sea Point’s Regent Road
Gather round When it comes to weekend meals, Sunday lunch is my favourite family tradition
O
ne of the things I’ve come to enjoy about being older is giving credit where it’s due, especially to my parents. Something that my mother taught me well was mealtime etiquette. As a family we always sat around the table for every meal. It might’ve exhausted us as kids and teenagers, but now I can see what it did for us as adults. It helped us establish traditions and brought us closer together. My mom taught me how to lay a table the proper way with all the necessary cutlery (you know, two forks, two different-sized knives, soup spoon, dessert spoon, side plate on the left-hand side and glass on the top right), and how to fold napkins in pretty shapes (I’m good at the open flower design). Sunday lunch was an extra-special event as it would be our first meal of the week. So when I find myself seated at Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant sharing the Sunday family lunch with my mom and family, it feels nostalgic and wonderous. The restaurant decor is elegantly homely – my favourite being the massive light fitting made up of hanging blue and white crockery. The table setting is exquisite and brings back memories.

warmth and buzz spills out on to the pavements from wide sliding doors. Sundoo’s no-bookings policy means that regulars get here early and, even on a Tuesday night, by 6.30pm every table is taken, noise levels are rising, and intriguing plates of spicy Indian tapas are delivered in quick succession.
The idea behind the Sunday lunch is just another way that the estate acknowledges tradition and the sentiment of family get-togethers. This is followed through in the main course being served to share at the table, so there’s passing of dishes just like at home. The starter is a plated dish of your choice like the roasted carrot soup, Buffalo yoghurt and cauliflower dumplings. The food is outstanding and what I term “elegant nourishment” – like a first-class comforting roast. Some of the dishes were roast pork belly, old-fashioned pumpkin tart, potato and pecorino dauphinoise, baked aubergine with buttermilk and pomegranate, and the raspberry and rose frozen slice, among other dainties for dessert. Of course, the meal can be paired with the award-winning La Motte wine list too. This is the real communion of life: sharing a beautiful meal with the people I cherish most.
TASTE FOR YOURSELF: Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant 021 876 8800 la-motte.com
Restaurateur Seelan Sundoo has hit on a recipe that has already won a loyal following, bringing the tastes of his South Indian heritage to Cape Town in a fresh way. “It’s fun dining rather than fine dining, not at all formal. I wanted to change the whole experience of Indian food,” he says.
Spice of life
Tables are packed close together and neighbours strike up conversations, swap menu recommendations and sometimes even trade tastes. It’s not the place to come for quiet and intimate conversation, but the sociable vibe turns neighbours into friends for the evening, with the warmth and generosity of the food infusing the atmosphere. Chilli prawn bites with fresh herbs, spicy squid with green chilli sauce, samosas, and mini rotis are a few of the tasty tapas options, which also serve as starters. The curries can also be ordered in small sharing portions, and from the first bite it’s obvious that this is the real deal. Spices are ground and mixed in-house, and the meat is incredibly tender from long, slow cooking. It’s hard to pick a favourite from the dishes we tried as all the spices are subtly different. The Pondicherry kingklip is rich and full-flavoured with tomato and tamarind, the slow-cooked humma’s lamb is meltingly soft with a secret spice blend, and the lamb kebab with coriander and turmeric root is a revelation of complex flavour. “South India is a real melting pot of cultures,” says Seelan of the inspiration for his menu. “For instance, the Portuguese influence of tomatoes in sauces. When people migrated to South Africa they brought this already diverse food culture and added to it.” He serves authentic Durban bunny chow with sweet, home-made chutney and spices, and for a touch of theatricality, a traditional Indian clay oven is brought to the table to serve delicately spiced Kerala roast chicken. We finished with an Indian take on dessert: gentle cardamom comfort in vermicelli – the grainy semolina soji is more of an acquired taste. There’s also a decadent cheesecake and a Lindt chocolate torte to tempt the less adventurous sweet tooth.

Young guns With Youth Day around the corner, we asked three up-and-coming winemakers how they found their feet in the cellar WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES
IMAGES: SUPPLIED & ISTOCK
Philip Viljoen, assistant winemaker, Bon Courage Wine Estate
Ricardo Cloete, assistant winemaker: white wines, Fleur du Cap
Q: What do you enjoy most about making wine at Bon Courage? A: Working on an estate, we are able to control the winemaking process from vineyard to cellar, as we have the facilities to grow, make and bottle the wine on the estate.
Q: What sparked your passion for wine? A: The interesting fact that you can turn a fruit into such a complex and versatile product that can be appreciated and enjoyed by many people.
Q: Any influential mentors in the world of wine? A: I have a few. For attention to detail: Charles Hopkins. Bartho Eksteen also comes to mind for originality; his passion is just amazing. And of course here at Bon Courage I have a lot of respect for the Bruwer family.
Q: Who has been your biggest influence in winemaking? A: My mentors from the three years I spent in the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé Programme: Charles Hopkins, Abrie Beeslaar and David Finlayson. Each of them played a different and unique role in the development of my career.
Q: What has been the highlight of your time in the wine industry? A: Being named Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year 2015. But most of all, I’m just so happy and privileged to have found a profession that I truly enjoy day after day.
Q: If you could take just one wine with you to a desert island? A: It would have to be the lovely Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Chardonnay 2014.
Anné van Heerden, winemaker, Alvi’s Drift Q: What first sparked your interest in wine? A: Art was my passion when I was younger and I see winemaking very much as an art form. This sparked an interest, which grew over time and blossomed into a passion and career. Q: Your ‘desert island’ wine? A: A good, fresh Chenin Blanc. Luckily for us in South Africa, we have plenty to choose from. Q: What’s your ten-year career plan? A: I would like to gain more inter national experience in tasting and production and develop some wine styles that will become known as South African icon wines. I would also like to ultimately contribute to the development of the South African wine industry, always improving on my wine canvas.

All that shimmers WORDS: CHRIS REID
IMAGE: NEO/CRAFT
ne of the big trends coming out of the international trade shows at the moment is the revival of all things iridescent. This shimmery finish is an interesting one in homeware because it’s naturally and technologically inspired. At times, it draws on natural sources like mother-of-pearl and insect carapace but can also mimic oil and holograms, depending on the material used. Either way, the important thing is that the trend is moving away from more youthful expressions we’re used to and into discerning homeware for the first time in a while. Internationally, designers like the German studio Neo/Craft have garnered attention for iridescent pieces such as the Iris pendant light. Inspired by soap bubbles, this piece has a simple form but features a surface treatment that changes colour based on ambient light and perspective. Similarly, Tom Dixon’s new range draws inspiration from oil slicks for its deep, dark, glimmer. One of the reasons we’re captivated by this kind of finish at the moment is because it isn’t static. As our digital interactions move back away from so-called skeuomorphism (making the digital look like the physical), physical objects are designed to follow suit. At the same time, the subtle natural associations make these objects feel familiar but special. This trend is not one that will last for many more seasons, but it is an interesting insight into what we value at this point in time.

Fimo (a polymer) clay while working with earth clay back in 2009 in Durban. Initially I was making African tribal figurines (dolls). There was great interest in them but this did not translate into sales. Realising that customers needed functional items, I designed and developed a miniature figurine small enough to be worked as a decorative element on cutlery. I started selling in the craft markets to the general public. This gave me an idea of the items that were popular and, of course, the feedback on where to improve the quality. Interestingly gift shop owners started enquiring if I could wholesale to them, and this is when I realised that I could develop this into a serious business.

nitially selling his decorative cutlery at markets, Caleb Khumalo has over the last six years built up a wide clientele that now includes more than 200 gift shops, game lodges and guesthouses, as well as exporting to international clients. He recently moved his production base and team of six dedicated staff to the Cape Business Parks in Maitland. Q: How did your business start? A: I was exposed to working with
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he location is very convenient, giving good accessibility to our customers, suppliers and staff. Being housed in a business park complex the premises have good security and there is plenty of potential for growth in future since it’s a fairly new complex. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: It’s affordable, especially
compared to rentals, say, in Woodstock or Salt River. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: O ur neighbour is a coffee shop that fixes and resells coffee-making machines. Q: What is your shop foot traffic? A: At the moment, our focus is on production and wholesale, so we don’t get casual passersby. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, the future plan is to extend the product range to include a wider variety of tableware, gifts and homeware items. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We’re currently developing a new website, which will allow us to sell directly online. Hopefully this should be up and running as early as July. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: B eaded cutlery and salad sets. I use glass beads and stainlesssteel wire on good quality stainless-steel cutlery, and the clay is baked at temperatures much higher than the normal dishwasher temperature, hence all the items are fully dishwasher safe. Clients really appreciate that everything is completely functional as well as decorative.

Analyse it PATRICK CAIRNS
A lesson from Korea L
ate last month, Dr Martyn Davies from the Deloitte Frontier Advisory spoke at a business breakfast that carried the title “State of the nation”. He opened his address by noting that he felt that this title was a misnomer because South Africa is not yet a nation. A more accurate title, he argued, would be “State of the state”. The point he was making is that after 1994 South Africa may have emerged as a unitary state, but we have not become a single nation. We are still beset by internal divisions, from widely disparate income levels, to the standards of education available in different areas, healthcare provision and, most critically, economic opportunity. Despite residing in the same country, South Africans can still live in very different worlds. And this is perhaps the single greatest political, social and economic challenge we face. For this country to succeed, we not only need a shared economic vision, but the cohesion to make it work. In short, we need a renewed sense of patriotism. Davies used the somewhat extreme, but very telling, example of what occurred in South Korea in the financial crisis that hit that country in 1997. In that year a number of major businesses went bankrupt, the banks were overleveraged and the entire financial system faced collapse. The government had to make difficult decisions to stabilise the economy, but what was more remarkable was the response of ordinary citizens. With the financial system on the brink, South Koreans were asked to donate their own gold to help salvage the economy. And they did. They queued at collection centres to hand over wedding rings and family heirlooms. They were willing to sacrifice their individual interests for the good of the nation as a whole.
If we are so internally divided, how will we ever be internationally competitive? DR MARTYN DAVIES
It is a matter for debate how much economic impact this gold collection really had, but there is no doubt of the psychological significance. Koreans came out as a nation because they were willing to share the burden of getting their country out of its crisis. This is patriotism in its most important sense – the appreciation that no individual can prosper if the nation fails. That is the understanding that drove Koreans to give whatever they could to help their country. And it is what South Africa desperately needs if it is to build an economy that grows wealth for all its citizens.

KZN’s aerotropolis boosting property growth
A
frica’s first purpose-built aerotropolis is significantly impacting North Coast property patterns as the ease of access prompts investors to acquire second homes in the region. Dube TradePort’s King Shaka International Airport is at the centre of this aerotropolis. Hamish Erskine, acting CEO, Dube TradePort Corporation, says new flights to and from Durban formed part of the larger implementation of KwaZulu-Natal’s economic
and tourism development plans. These include stimulating local manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, as new facilities are established at Dube TradePort and the Tongaat Hulett Developments at Cornubia and RiverHorse Valley. Says Erskine: “Dube TradePort takes advantage of its prime location as the only facility in Africa combining an international airport, dedicated cargo terminal, warehousing, offices, retail, hotels and agriculture.”
There is also an increase in property buyers from Gauteng and abroad. According to Tongaat Hulett Developments director, Rory Wilkinson, one sound example of the impact that boosted economic development on the North Coast has had on the property market, is the sell-out of the Sibayabased Ocean Dunes within a short period. “All these factors count towards adding value and increasing the demand for property on the North Coast,” he says.
Housing market still looks well balanced The slightly less weak economic environment may just have been enough to cause a mild bump-up to average house price inflation, with the FNB House Price Index year-on-year growth rate accelerating from 7% in the prior month to 7,4% in May JOHN LOOS, FNB HOUSEHOLD AND PROPERTY SECTOR STRATEGIST

ightstone Property has worked out what salary you need to be earning to purchase a property in a particular area of South Africa. The “salary needed for property” element is based on gross salary per month, the median value of properties, a 20-year mortgage at a fixed prime rate (10,5%), and 100% financing with no deposit made in purchasing a property. Transfer and other related costs, however, are excluded, and no
more than 30% of a person’s gross monthly salary would be allocated towards mortgage repayments each month (this is based on mortgage lender standard assumptions). The median value for a property in the Western Cape is R680,000, the highest out of all of the provinces, and one which would require a monthly salary of R22,600. The Eastern Cape has the lowest median value of a property (at R380,000) requiring a salary of R12,600.
To afford a property in Gauteng where the median value is R620,000, you’d typically need a salary of R20,600. To afford a luxury beach property with a median value range of R11,7m in Llandudno, you’d need a monthly salary of R389,400. A property of R7,2m within the coastal estate of Zimbali would require a salary of at least R239,600, and a property of around R8,35m in De Zalze Golf Estate would require a salary of R277,900.

About the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
L
ush and leafy with pockets of protected green belt running through it and prolific birdlife, Constantia feels closely connected to the countryside and farmland that once spread over the whole valley. With several prestigious wine estates still occupying the higher slopes, the overall impression is of green, open spaces, and the large tree-filled plots of this affluent suburb continue the country feel. The only downside for residents who work or go to school in the centre of town is the commute on the M3 which can get congested at peak times, but most feel it is worth it to come home to a tranquil neighbourhood where they can go horse riding, walking or mountain biking along the beautiful green belt trails. Community efforts are keeping the area safe. “Crime has dropped significantly
Constantia feels like being in the country. There’s no street lighting and the large plot sizes make for low density, so that roads aren’t at all busy. Kids can get out into nature every day whether it’s The Bike Park at Constantia Uitsig, horse riding at one of the local stables, mountain hiking, or beach fun a short drive away at Muizenberg or Hout Bay. Constantia Waldorf School is one of the few prestigious schools within the suburb (its night markets are a popular community event in summer), but there is plenty more choice nearby including Reddam House Constantia, Herzlia Constantia, Springfield Convent School, Herschel Girls’ School and Bishops Diocesan College. Agent commentary Q: What do you love most about this area? A: The area has a unique country feel with the charm and sophistication of an upmarket neighbourhood, offering nature walks, cycling and equestrian trails, coupled with world-renowned restaurants and wine farms. You can take your family and dogs for a ramble along the beautiful Alphen Trail in Constantia Valley. Park your car on the bend of Alphen Drive off Constantia Main Road and enjoy the lush grass, trees, vistas and the Le Sueur Mea dow towards Hohenort. The local Constantia Village accommodates one’s shopping needs ranging from artisan bread, biltong and fair-trade coffee, to designer cashmere and French perfume.
Q: Who is buying property in the area? A: Constantia comprises various subsections that attract different buyers. In the “lower” Constantia, Constantia Hills and rural Con stantia areas, properties tend to be a bit more affordable compared to the Constantia Upper area, where houses can sell for well into the upper millions. Constantia tends to attract wealthy families, both from the Cape Metro upgrading into the area, and upcountry buyers migrating to the Cape. The area is also popular with foreign buyers, government and ambassadorial officials. The country lifestyle, stunning setting against the slopes of Constantiaberg, and prestigious wine estates all add to attracting buyers from across the globe.
Q: What can buyers expect to pay for property? A: In the “green suburb”, Constantia Upper, with its leafy almost rural feel and prestigious wine estates, we have experienced exponential growth in the last few years, so much so that the entry level has risen to R6m on a land-size of 1,350m2, with top-end prices for properties on 8,000m2 and above achieving between R20m and a current record price of R50m. Our colleagues Mark Taylor and Gwen Anders, experts in the Lower Constantia area south of Spaanschemat River Road, report entry-level pricing of around R3,8m on 700m2 and up to R12m on 4,000m2.
