Editor’s Exclusive CLAIRE BARNARDO

Holiday ready I t’s official: school is out and the holidays have started. What a cheerful thought. While many are still wrapping up the working year, we thought to bring you the best in what to do this December so that you can start planning your days of freedom. Like where to go with the kids, and the best in outdoor places.

As chances are you might be travelling or spending your break in another city, we’ve made sure our top picks are national from our very own freelance writers. This way you have a handy Neighbourhood guide no matter where you are. All that’s really left to do then is to don your summer casuals and head out for some fun.

Wishing you a happy and safe holiday time!

Picnic perfect Gracious alfresco living, a romantic beach picnic, or a tasty lunch on the move, Cape Town’s gourmet picnic services have got it in the basket WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

P

icnics are an essential part of a summer well lived. Whether it’s at the beach or on a wild mountain slope, food just tastes better outdoors. Too often during the busy run-up to the holiday season the thought of making a mountain of sandwiches or diving back into busy shops for picnic supplies is the last straw, so another sunset goes by uncelebrated. How much more relaxing to have a gourmet picnic delivered to your door, filled with all sorts of delectable salads, meats and desserts? It’s just a question of throwing a picnic blanket into the car and setting off for your favourite sundowner spot to recoup your holiday mojo and feast at leisure. Reading through the menus at Picnic Company, it’s clear that today’s gourmet

picnics have come a long way from the concept of a sandwich and piece of fruit. They read more like the menus for fourcourse meals at a good restaurant, and are prepared freshly by chefs using local ingredients. Imaginative salads include strawberry, biltong, red onion and rocket; or asparagus, boiled quail eggs with avocado and watercress. There are appetising meat dishes from rare-roasted beef fillet to ostrich kebabs as well. Dial-a-Picnic also offers a whole range of enticing picnic menus. They specialise in surprise set-ups so that you can arrive at your chosen picnic spot and find blankets, colourful cushions and a picnic hamper already in place with bubbly chilling in an ice bucket for a romantic celebration.

Local to the Heldeberg region is Gourmet Picnic Food, offering a series of picnic basket menus for two and individual lunch boxes, all made with local, mostly organic ingredients and designed for lunch on the go. Dreading a big family get-together where most of the guests seem to have different dietary requirements? Each company has designed gluten-free, Banting, vegetarian, and kids’ menus, so you can keep things simple and fuss free, just giving each person the relevant picnic box. Add in the optional extras of hiring picnic blankets, cushions, wicker baskets and ice buckets, and you have all you need for a gracious alfresco meal with minimal clear-up and plenty of time to relax with family and friends in beautiful surroundings.

Master distiller Andy Watts has set local whisky fans aflutter with the release of his remarkable new single malt WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES IMAGES: SUPPLIED

A

ndy Watts, master distiller, The James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, is a man who likes to keep busy. Since taking over the distillery in 1991 he has revitalised the range of Three Ships blended whiskies and, in 2009, launched South Africa’s first single grain whisky. Unsurprisingly, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky was a runaway success. And yet it’s single malts that get most whisky lovers excited, and the release earlier this year of a rare single malt from the distillery’s barrel storehouses generated plenty of buzz. The object of their affection? South Africa’s first single cask single malt whisky. While limited-release single malts from Africa’s only commercial whisky distillery are reason enough to get excited, Watts added another layer of intrigue by maturing a portion of the whisky in barrels that had held Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry. “Pedro Ximénez is a white Spanish wine grape varietal used for the production of a sweet-style sherry,” Watts explains. “The raisiny richness it imparts to the cask was the perfect finishing touch I wanted to complement the smokiness of our single malt with some sweet, nutty flavours.” Watts has long been a fan of the smoky malts typical of the island of Islay, where he spent time making whisky, so no surprise that the whisky balances an elegant smokiness against the sweet notes from the sherry cask. The single barrel of whisky allowed Watts to release just 800 bottles of the Three Ships 10 Year Old Single Malt Single Cask PX Finish, each bottled and numbered by hand. The bad news is that of the 800 bottles, 400 bottles were snapped up in an online auction in late October. The remainder are available, if you’re lucky, through selected liquor outlets. But if you miss out on a bottle of the PX Finish, don’t shed a tear into your tumbler. In March next year Watts will finally release the next batch of his popular Three Ships 10 Year Old Single Malt, which will now become a permanent part of the Three Ships range. Cheers to that.

T

he trend forecaster Faith Popcorn introduced the world to the concept of “cocooning” in the 1990s. She posited that people would increasingly want to spend time in their homes and would therefore invest money and effort to make their living spaces a safe and comfortable escape, insulated from the problems of the world. Looking at current decor and home trends, we appear to be moving back into a renewed phase of cocooning, most likely because of the uncertainty in the world at the moment. For years now, architecture and spatial design have moved towards creating open-plan, mixed-use spaces in homes and offices. While these offer certain benefits, this new desire to re-cocoon leads to a conflict between the spaces we occupy and the way we want to occupy them. Rather than split rooms back into their distinct functions, designers have come up with solutions that allow us to create space for privacy within our living and workspaces. Brands like Steelcase and Arco, for example, offer working pods that can

be slotted into existing spaces to give people the privacy they want. These self-contained units speak to our desire for privacy and our appreciation for open, free-flowing spaces, and help us to find the all-important middle ground between the two. Ultimately, we’ll see more and more of these privacy-focused designs making their way into the mainstream over the next few years. Workplaces, particularly, will shift to accommodate our need for privacy and connection (hopefully without reverting back to cubicles). How far we retreat in this cocooning remains to be seen, but it’s the way we remain connected yet private that will be most interesting.

here’s no shortage of great restaurants on the Garden Route, and travellers exploring the holiday towns from Mossel Bay to Knysna are in for a culinary treat this summer. The latest addition to the burgeoning restaurant scene is Monet’s on Fancourt Estate outside George. Although set in the central-hotel building, the restaurant is open to residents and visitors, and offers panoramic views over the first tee on Fancourt’s Outeniqua golf course. If you want to keep an eye on the fairways it’s best to book a table on the spacious terrace, where cosy couches and wooden tables offer alfresco dining with a view of the golf and the distant Outeniqua Mountains.

The menu at Monet’s is inspired by French bistro cuisine, with an occasional Asian influence. Expect the likes of moules mariniere served with a rustic baguette, or hand-chopped beef tartare. When the clouds roll in, as they often do in the afternoon, the grilled sirloin with thick-cut fries is a good choice.

Bistro bites

With a globetrotting menu of bistro-inspired cuisine, Monet’s is a delicious new addition to the Fancourt Estate outside George WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

IMAGES: SUPPLIED

Across the menu prices are fair and the portions generous, with a good mix of hearty dishes for hungry golfers alongside lighter options. The open sandwich of smoked salmon topped with red onions, capers, avocado and cream cheese was especially good. The small sushi selection may seem out of place alongside such bistro staples, but the chef assures me that the resident golfers would revolt if it were taken off the menu. To finish, there is a small selection of French classics including crepes suzette with Grand Marnier-infused ice cream, and an apple tarte tatin. Or have a look in the pastry display for the day’s freshly baked cakes and tarts. A local told me in hushed tones that one shouldn’t ever miss out on the carrot cake. As you leave, a small deli section will tempt you to stock up on homemade pickles and jams, and freshly baked breads and pastries.

ocals and internationals alike travel from near and far to experience the fine wine the Western Cape has to offer. It’s no secret that the Western Cape is considered ideal for wine production, so a leisurely trip to Vredendal, Paarl, or Franschhoek, or Constantia, is a must for some serious vino indulgence.

Vredendal

With a population of just over 16,000, Vredendal borders the southern tip of the majestic Namaqualand. The town lies on the bank of the Olifants River which is renown for its intricate irrigation systems that allow for impressive agriculture and viticulture in the area. Vredendal has some of the most beautiful nature reserves and a great selection of wine farms in the incredible region called the Matzikama. With its contrasting sandy plains, rugged mountains and a diverse selection

of succulent plant species, the area is green, fertile and peaceful.

Paarl

Paarl is situated at the foot of the second-largest granite outcrop in the world. This restful, postcard town is rich in history, home to impressive Dutch, Victorian and Georgian architecture, and ideal for those who love the outdoors. Known not only for its beauty, Paarl has a selection of excellent schools, restaurants and a wine route featuring superb wines. The grape varietals grown in Paarl include Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. Known as the “Red Route” because of its vast quantity of red wine varietals, many of its vineyards still grow among the residential neighbourhoods, lending a country feel to the town.

Franschhoek

Boasting eight of the top 100 restaurants in the country and close to 30 wine cel-

lars, it’s no surprise that this traditionally French town is always bustling. Many of the wine farms have kept their French names and display lovely Cape Dutch architecture. This wine and food destination is perfect for a romantic getaway where there are a number of walking trails surrounding the mountains – perfect for nature enthusiasts.

Constantia

Constantia has a wine-making history dating back to 1685, when Simon van der Stel settled on this fairly large piece of land and began planting some of the country’s first vineyards. Nestled in a picturesque valley with a cool, temperate climate ideal for wineproducing grapes, this stretch of lush, green land has been producing some of South Africa’s finest wines for more than 300 uninterrupted years. The tree-lined stretch of road sets the mood for a day, or two, of leisurely drinking.

Keeping holidays fun Gather round, parents, here’s how to survive the holidays with the little ones WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE

IMAGE: ISTOCK

W

hile they are fun, the holidays can also be a stressful time for parents. Trying to keep your kids occupied every day can be daunting. Here are some tips to make it easier for you.

Pace yourself

You can’t entertain the kids from dawn to dusk, and no one is expecting you to, either. It’s too exhausting. Rather pace yourself. Start by looking at your day and breaking it up into segments of scheduled play, free play, and then a rest period. For scheduled play, head out to do a planned activity – this will ease the pressure. Then encourage free play time with the kids where they can entertain themselves. Finally, a rest period is vital for everyone and doesn’t always have to equate to sleep, but reading or quiet time too.

Be flexible

Think about how you don’t have to worry about rushing the kids off to school, sitting in morning traffic and worrying about school lunches. Now that you don’t have this pressure on your family, you can enjoy the mornings and evenings together more, and spend the day at your own pace. Welcome in flexibility.

Quality time

Do something together that you all enjoy and that you can get creative with. It might be baking together, spending time in the garden or even painting. This is the perfect time to break away from the norm and teach your child a valuable and fun skill.

Head outside

Studies show that children benefit greatly from spending time away from the TV and rather embracing nature. So grab the sunscreen and head off on an adventure. There are plenty of places to explore no matter where you are (have a look at our outdoor places and beaches guide for proof ).

Do something special

A change in routine can be just the thing to lift you and your littles ones’ spirits. Be sure to choose something that will entertain not only them, but you too. Whether it is a movie that you can both enjoy, or a restaurant that has a play area for the kids (see our family restaurant guide), make sure it is something they’ll remember.

Simon’s Town

has it all

Whale watching, penguins, shark diving, seals, dolphins, hiking, kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, swimming, golfing, self catering, bed & breakfasts, hotels, bicycling, shopping, eating, history, boat trips, museums, navy ships, submarine, shore angling, deep sea fishing, beaches, kiddies activities ... the list goes on.

Secure your property

this festive season Your property is a major investment, so it is imperative to make sure it is adequately secured over the festive period WORDS: LISA DEWBERRY

IMAGE: ISTOCK

S

outh African crime data analysis indicates that house robberies tend to increase over the festive season. This is according to Lew Geffen, chairman, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, who says even if homeowners don’t go away, their properties are more frequently left empty during the season due to shopping trips and social events. It’s therefore imperative that properties are adequately secured. “It is important that your alarm is serviced and in working order before you go away. Fit suitable locks and bolts to sliding doors to prevent burglars from lifting the glass off its tracks – the most common method of break-in. Make sure the property’s exterior is illuminated with motiondetector spotlights and outdoor lighting fi xtures as a well-lit home is less likely to be broken into,” he says. According to Geffen a part of a property that could be better secured is the

garage door, which should be checked for loose springs, joints, rust, cracks or weaknesses. Check that it is connected to the alarm system and the garage door opener should be unplugged when you’re away for an extended period. He says a pet door also allows access to reach inside and unlock the door and is often easy to cut into a larger hole allowing a person to fit through. Samuel Seeff, chairman, Seeff, says security has become one of the biggest considerations for homebuyers and is not something to be skimped on. He says damage caused during a break-in can be more expensive than having a good security system and insurance to cover damage or loss. “Homes with good security are highly sought after and usually make it to the top of a buyer’s list. Holiday and investment homes tend to be in

locations far removed from the owner’s place of residence, so protecting them and ensuring they grow in value also requires a focus on security,” says Seeff. Theunis Kotze, general manager, ADT Inland Region, says homeowners should advise their security company of holiday plans before they leave, so the company has updated information regarding keyholders and details of domestic workers, gardeners or house-sitters on the property. “All outside locks should be a minimum of four-lever locks or double-cylinder security locks and be in good working order. It is vital the alarm is armed when leaving the property as alarms are often not activated at the time of a break-in. Whether at home or going away during the festive season, make sure you prepare in advance to rest knowing your security system is in working order,” says Kotze.

hether it is celebrated as a religious holiday or not, Christmas has a particularly special feel to it. It is, simply, a happy holiday. Shopping centres around the country make the most of this. They lay on the lights, the music, the Christmas trees and the jolly old men in red suits to talk to the children about what presents the elves at the North Pole should be making for them. They bring us in and encourage us to spend, and why not? Having worked hard for a whole year, letting go a little and buying nice things for ourselves and spoiling our loved ones, is a treat we all deserve. It is also an important stimulus for the economy. The festive season is the most important time for all retailers and their suppliers. The burst of spending that it brings is what keeps many of them in business for the rest of the year. However, while there are many wonderful things to buy in the shops this year, perhaps it is also worth considering gifts that you won’t find in the toy aisle and that won’t just last a day or even a year.

Earlier this year, the National Treasury gave the whole country a wonderful gift by introducing taxfree savings accounts. These allow us to invest up to R30,000 a year and never pay any tax on the proceeds. With great foresight, the Treasury also did not impose an age limit on who could open these accounts. Parents can open one for a child of any age. They are therefore an ideal way for parents to start their children off in investing, and a great tool to teach them about saving, compounding and delayed gratification. An investment might not sound like the most exciting gift you can give, and perhaps it shouldn’t be the only thing under your tree, but the critical thing to remember is that by opening a tax-free savings account in your child’s name, you are not just giving them some money. You are giving them a far greater gift, which is time. For any investment, the most important factor is how long it is held for. The more time it has to grow, the greater the effect that compound interest will have. And the fact is that someone who invests on behalf of their one-year-old child now, is effectively giving them a 20-year head start in life.

ot only is St John’s Village nestled in the cosy town of Howick just outside of Pietermaritzburg, it is also a leading lifestyle and retirement estate with amenities allowing you to enjoy life to the fullest. If you aren’t yet aware of the competition happening at the moment, you have been missing out. An opportunity to win a home worth R2m does not come along every day. St John’s Village, in conjunction with the property app Howz-It, is giving away a home in St John’s Village to one lucky winner in February.

What makes St John’s Village unique?

Gated communities are becoming an ever-growing property trend in South Africa. St John’s Village encompasses that trend and so much more. Be part of a growing community suitable for small or large families, with a retirement estate on the grounds too. Organic, agricultural and eco elements have been incorporated into the estate, and it emphasises a greener way of life. St John’s Village has been designed to offer a lifestyle that is suitable to different ages, a community that is safe and secure, along with being a convenient space in which to live.

Hear what the locals say

“While taking an early-morning walk, you can pass the grazing cows, observe many species of birds, and, on some days, see wildlife without having to worry about your safety or breathing in exhaust fumes. You can picnic by the dam, watch the development of the vineyard and orchards, or spend time in the beautiful tranquil gardens,” says St John’s Village residents Karen and Lynton Hargreaves. “The pool and clubhouse are near completion and, again, what a pleasure to have those facilities. Sitting outside on your patio in the evening without having to worry about intruders is a blessing. Best of all we were allowed to bring our cat. Best decision we have made!” Kevin Moran of The Orchards says, “On moving to St John’s Village I was afraid of missing out on my active lifestyle. I was wrong – I can walk, run and paddle on my doorstep in the estate.”

uying a hotel room for personal use may be gaining steam of late, but is by no means a new form of property investment. In earlier years share schemes were all the rage in South Africa, with no fixed asset ever purchased or owned by private buyers. For the last decade or so, however, a second type of purchasing arrangement has become increasingly popular, with those in the know saying it’s the next big thing in the property market.

with the opportunity to capitalise on rental income.”

According to Ian Slot, managing director, Seeff Atlantic Seaboard and City Bowl, hotel apartments with added five-star extras such as room service and restaurants, a gymnasium, and concierge and cleaning services, increase the property’s attractiveness for discerning buyers and investors looking for a convenient, chic lock-upand-go lifestyle.

Another exceptional investment opportunity in Cape Town is the five-star Pepperclub Hotel & Spa. Popularity of the Pepperclub is driven by the excellent amenities on offer, such as 24-hour security and concierge services, and the fact that Pepperclub connects directly to Long Street via a private courtyard.

Slot says these properties are typically bought with a dual purpose in mind. “While many of the units are bought for own use, they are also good investments. Some, for example, come

Slot cites the three 100m2 Circa Luxury Apartment Hotel units on Cape Town’s foreshore as an example of an excellent investment opportunity. Each of the Circa properties is being marketed for just under R10m, and a unit owner can expect to yield a net rental income of approximately R900,000 over the next year, delivering a yield of 10%.

Sales at the Pepperclub have increased over the last year, but units remain affordable, representing an excellent investment opportunity. “Apartments in the hotel still offer exceptional affordability with units selling for

upwards of R1,05m for a 34m2 unit with one bedroom, to R1,48m for 67m2,” says Slot. “Even at the top end, a luxury two-bedroom unit situated on the 18th floor with spectacular city and mountain views, is only selling for about R6,49m. It is an exceptional investment opportunity and, according to Seeff agents Jason Paans and Warren Emett, comes with a guaranteed twoyear lease.” However, Lew Geffen, chairman, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, cautions buyers to do their research before deciding to buy. “It needs to be a carefully chosen and considered hotel apartment investment, though, because management costs can eat into profits and some rental minimums aren’t guaranteed.” If carefully chosen, investing in a hotel apartment can yield significant rental income. Excellent location factors can also translate into stable inherent capital value for the buyer, which improves the attractiveness for the discerning investor.

L

ike so many other towns and suburbs across the Western Cape, Paarl has seen a steady increase in property prices over the past couple of years. Renowned for its picturesque setting, wine farms and rich history, Paarl is considered by many to be a safe location – a place where residents enjoy a relaxed country lifestyle with myriad outdoor and sporting facilities on their doorstep.

“The residential property market in the Boland town of Paarl has maintained its steady growth over the past decades as it is becoming increasingly popular with buyers looking to move away from the cities,” says Lew Geffen, chairman, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty. Agents are now experiencing a significant shortage of sale stock, particularly in the low to mid-market segments. He says the company’s agency in Paarl is fielding an

increasing number of queries from Gauteng buyers and from Cape Town families looking to move out of the city.

business environment and is away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

There is also a growing demand from the so-called “swallows” who like to follow the sun and leave Europe during the winter months, heading for the sunny climes of the Western Cape.

Paarl is known for its historical background, beautiful Taal Monument situated at Paarl Mountain, and excellent medical facilities and hospitals. The wine farms are popular and you get some of the best wines in and around the Boland.

The town has excellent schools, a country-like atmosphere, secure

Lizette Joubert, Paarl franchisee, Rawson Property Group, says prices

in the town vary according to location. “You cannot compare golf estates and security estates with the Paarl East suburbs. Even central Paarl, where the average price of a three-bedroom home with a double garage is R1,5m, is different from the northern areas of the town.” She says the area offers excellent value for money and that buyers get what they pay for considering the sheer beauty of the surrounds.

Developing communities For the Western Cape, developments continue to be a major area of property growth W O R D S : C L A I R E BA R N A R D O

PROPERTY NEWS

D

emand for property in the Western Cape and Cape Town in particular, has been steadily rising for years, and it’s not set to halt any time soon. Here’s why developments are leading the way.

1. Creating neighbourhoods

Jacques van Embden, managing director, Blok, saw the need to make these flats more elaborate and to create neighbourhoods within them. “A neighbourhood community is a co-creation effort,” says Van Embden. “One cannot do it alone. It needs the involvement of everyone – residents, business owners and local government – to create a neighbourhood that reflects and advances the unique character of our part of the city.”

2. Providing affordable housing

DID YOU KNOW?: Buh-Rein Estate in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs was recognised by the South African Planner’s Institute (SAPI) for its innovative layout and duly won the SAPI award in 2010. From there it has gone from strength to strength with sustained demand for new homes in the estate.

Riaan Roos, CEO, MSP Developments, says the success of these developments is about meeting the community’s needs as well. “Population growth is the strongest driver of demand for housing because everyone needs a place to live. Our affordable housing division serves historically disenfranchised communities where demand now outstrips supply due to the positive effects of BEE. In the Western Cape, the geography of the Peninsula dictates that current and future expansion of the urban edge will take place in the Northern Suburbs. That is why the metro’s Spatial Development Plan provides for up to 40,000 new homes to be developed in this area over the next two decades. We are well positioned to capitalise on this,” he says.

3. Investment opportunity

“Forty percent of our buyers are investors who see the opportunity that

21

the strong rental demands hold for them, and the other 60% are owners/ occupiers. Young families from the Southern Suburbs are buying because there is little affordable stock in that area. And many buyers were renting in the Northern Suburbs but wish to escape the rental trap by securing their own home. We are seeing strong demand from “semigrants” – those relocating to the Western Cape from up north,” says Roos.

4. Providing variety

Cobus Bedeker, development director, Amdec Property Development, says that as a leading national and international property development and investments group, Amdec is active in all sectors of the property industry including commercial, retail, office, residential, retirement and mixed-use developments. “By offering a diverse product range one creates a robust property development and investment business that can withstand the test of time and adapt to the constantly changing property market.”

5. Ticking the box

For the Rabie Property Group developments are connecting with buyers’ real needs. “Buyers are really looking for a quality product with good capital growth potential. In terms of specifics, we’re noticing the following features are important: safety and security, good parking ratios, added value in terms of landscaped gardens, communal facilities, north-facing units and/or mountain or sea views. Developments overlooking water/nature carry a premium, as well as retirement development,” says Maggie Rowley, communications manager, Rabie.

Plan your future W

hile many people imagine that starting a residential investment portfolio is only for those with millions to spare, it can be surprisingly affordable if you know how to go about it. It all comes down to choosing the right property in the right area. The first step, of course, is to compare various offers and identify which ones meet your objectives and budget. If owning residential property is part of your financial and investment planning, you can factor it into your monthly budget as you would any other investment – with the added advantage that property is at least partially funded by the bank, in the form of a bond. That’s not the only reason to choose property over other investments, though – the last 50 years show a consistent appreciation in property values, while other investments are

prone to fluctuate. This is partly due to inflation, which increases the replacement cost of a house (and thus pushes up its value) and also due to the steady demand for residential property as a result of population growth. It is simple economics – supply versus demand. Thanks to urbanisation, demand for property in metro areas will always be higher, so the risk is generally lower due to demand from tenants and buyers.

The right property investment

Choosing the right property is essential, and there are three things to look for: a property that is affordable enough to use as a starting point; that offers relatively low risk and reasonable yield; and that has a good rent-value-ratio (RVR). The RVR is the ratio of rental income to the price you paid for the property (the value). The Northern Suburbs of Cape Town are proving more and more popular

Investing in residential property is less intimidating than you think

for residential investments as they are the only area into which the Cape Metro can significantly expand because of the geographic confines of the peninsula. Property in the city centre is increasingly unaffordable for many, so the Northern Suburbs offer an affordable alternative. Buying into a new development (rather than an existing house) also means that the transaction includes all costs, including bond registration and transfer fees. If you buy an existing property, you should expect to pay bond and transfer costs in addition to the purchase price, and that means straining your available cash resources. When it comes to deciding what your financial plans are for 2016, starting a residential investment portfolio may well be on the cards. For more information on Buh-Rein Estate in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, visit the MSP website.

MSP DEVELOPMENTS Multi Spectrum Property (MSP) Developments is a leading multidisciplinary residential developer in the Western Cape, which operates from Tyger Valley in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs. MSP Developments won the Govan Mbkei Housing Award, the Home Builder of the Year award, and the South African Planning Institute award for the most innovatively designed lifestyle estate. Since 2001 it has provided homes to thousands of families. MSP Developments has built over 4,000 homes and is one of the largest private developers in Cape Town, as well as one of the biggest affordable-housing developers.
