magine being recognised for the role you played in fostering friendship? I recently had the pleasure of being at a rather special award ceremony that did just that. The ambassador of Japan to the Republic of South Africa, on behalf of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, presented Hans Schröder, owner, Stark-Condé Wines in Stellenbosch with the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation. Each year, the award is presented to people or groups who have shown outstanding achievement in internationally recognised work. It acknowledges the contributions made in promoting friendship between Japan and other countries.
Hans Schröder is one of this year’s recipients and the first in the Cape to receive it, and is recognised for how he has cultivated a public understanding of Japan through activities and social interactions between the two countries. Now that is really positive news and something we can all aspire to.

Benguela A Cove bags top winemaker
fter 10 years at KWV, Johann Fourie’s growing passion for “more elegant wines, wines with finesse and purity of fruit”, meant that when the opportunity to join coastal Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate came along, it was too tempting to pass up.

on’t miss the Franschhoek Cap Classique and Champagne Festival “The Magic of Bubbles”, my favourite, on 3 and 4 December. You can expect two days of extravagance, style and splendour. So why not dress up, sample some of France’s best champagnes and South Africa’s foremost MCCs while feasting on some of the best food Franschhoek has to offer? Get your tickets at webtickets.co.za.
“To everyone’s surprise, all of the wines are performing extremely well,” says Johann. “The longevity of these wines is quite remarkable. They need a few years to really show themselves.” For Johann the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon, typically grown in a warmer climate, was a particularly pleasant surprise. “As the crow flies we are just 3km from the ocean, but on the property we also have cooler and warmer slopes to work with,” says Johann. “There are also a number of different vine clones planted for each cultivar, so there’s so much diversity in the vineyards.”
On our radar
1 Hermanus
Across the estate’s 70ha of vineyards Fourie has a wide range of cultivars to work with, from the cool-climate staples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, to the surprising inclusion of Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Mourvèdre and more.
Map not to scale
That diversity will be properly captured in the 2017 harvest, when Johann welcomes the first grapes through the doors of the estate’s brand-new, custom-built cellar. Down the line, Johann also plans to plant more Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Most known for the Hermanus Whale Festival, where the stars of the show are the Southern Right Whales, Hermanus also has a budding wine route.
“I’d also like to play with some cooler-climate Pinotage and Chenin Blanc… just to see what happens,” says Johann, who adds that he won’t be chasing awards and medals at Benguela Cove. “For me, the mission is about taking what we have, the specificity of the property, and capturing all of that in the bottle. If I can communicate how special this piece of land is, that will be the best award of all!”
2
Aside from keeping a close eye on Benguela Cove, Johann will also be responsible for the planting of vineyards and production of sparkling wine at an English estate recently acquired by Benguela Cove’s owner, entrepreneur Penny Streeter.

genuinely warm welcome, pride in the quality of their offering and mouthwatering menus are what these three restaurants have in common, and they’re all in Pinelands.
Hoghouse Brewery
Combining a craft brewery with a Texanstyle smokehouse barbeque restaurant, was an inspired move. A relaxed vibe with beer tastings fuelled by PJ Vadas’s excellent food, brings customers to Ndabeni, Pinelands, from all over Cape Town. If nose to tail eating is your thing, the crunchy sticky pig tails and black pudding scotch eggs are sublime. For vegetarians the wild mushroom arancini is equally moreish. Next up, thick slices of the slow-smoked meats (brisket, lamb and pork spare ribs), and colourful sides – from charred butternut with maple syrup and pecans to a varied cauliflower and goat’s cheese dish worthy of being a vegetarian main. And save room for the pastéis de nata, a dreamy melting custard tart from the Hoghouse bakery.
Magica Roma
Ezio De Biaggi and Franco Zezia have been at the helm of this bestknown restaurant in Pinelands for 29 years. “We have clientele that have been coming all these years and now

obertson is known for its sweeping mountains, incredible wines, and hospitable people. Here are our top picks of what to do when you next head that way:
Bottle your own blend at Excelsior
Time needed: at least an hour to blend and taste wine – groups need to book in advance Have you ever made your own blend? Head to the Excelsior Wine Estate tasting room, which is a wooden cabin set on a lake. Besides wine tasting, you can make your own red wine blend, which is quite a novel idea. Decide on the percentage of Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and once you’re settled, you get to blend, bottle, name and label it. I went for a predominantly Shiraz blend which came out just as I had hoped. Highlight: staying at the farm and going on a farm tour – the view over the vineyards is majestic.
Bubbly breakfast at Bon Courage Time needed: two hours
If you are a bubbly fan then Robertson is home to some excellent MCCs. One of my favourites is the Jacques Bruére Cap Classique from Bon Courage. Keeping it on the lees for a minimum of 36 to 48 months before disgorgement, results in a mature, biscuity delight. The Blanc de Blanc is my favourite. Have breakfast at the eclectic Cafe Maude where the food is superb and owners Francois Malherbe and Johan Geldenhuys will keep you entertained for hours on end with their antics. Highlight: the rare collection of preserved insects (tarantulas, scorpions, butterflies, beetles, and locusts) framed on the wall.
Garden Tour at Van Loveren Time needed: half an hour including a glass of bubbly
Did you know that founders Hennie and Jean Retief have planted trees with purpose over the years around the estate since 1939? The trees commemorate special moments defined by the family
– like the Leopard tree planted in honour of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. You can go on a tour to hear all about the stories behind the beautiful shady spaces. Choose a guided tour or make your own way. Highlight: the pizza at the bistro Christina’s is a delicious must!
Stay over at Galloway Guest House
Time needed: two nights’ stay It’s no wonder that this gem is set on Happy Days Farm in Klaasvoogds just outside Robertson. Galloway Guest House is exactly that, a cheerful place to be. This luxury retreat has rooms that are designed with minimal and stunning finishes. Set against a mountainous backdrop it’s quite easy to simply pull up a chair and gaze. Jana Wentzel Roodt and Johan Roodt make you feel so welcome that it’s hard to leave when you have to. Highlight: an intimate supper in the home of the owners paired with their family wines from the boutique estate Exdiem.
their children are coming, too,” says Franco. The secret of their success is an unwavering commitment to quality seasonal ingredients long before seasonal was a buzzword, and regulars know to ask about improvised dishes that are not on the menu. With true Italian dedication to the seasons, they hunt down porcini mushrooms in autumn, serve up porchetta for special occasions, and their antipasto platters loaded with prosciutto, calamari, brinjals, buffalo mozzarella and more are popular.
Saltwater Grill
This unpretentious new seafood restaurant was started by chef Dylan Paioni last year. “I’m from an Italian family, so food was always important, and working at Île de Pain in Knysna taught me always to aim for perfection.” Dylan makes his own fresh pasta daily for the voluptuous seafood pastas, plates all his dishes beautifully with the prettiest flowerdecorated salads, and only uses sustainable fresh fish from top Cape Town suppliers. Luscious oysters, mussels and calamari and generous two-course specials on Mondays and Tuesdays have already won him an enthusiastic local following.

A day in the life of a Type 1 diabetic Ever wondered what it’s like to live with diabetes? Bridget McNulty, editor, Sweet Life diabetes lifestyle magazine, gives us the lowdown WORDS: BRIDGET MCNULTY IMAGE: ISTOCK

sugar, but it has a dramatic effect on blood sugar, so it has to be in small doses and on special occasions.
9.30am: Test my blood sugar to check that I injected the right amount of insulin.
7.30am: Make breakfast and inject short-acting insulin before I start eating. The amount of insulin I take depends on what I’m eating, so I have to count the carbs in everything I eat – and I mean everything. All dairy is carbs, so is all fruit, as well as the expected things like bread and pasta. I generally drink a green juice of spinach, orange
Rest of the morning: No snacking! Or if I do snack, I need to count the carbs of whatever the snack is and inject the right amount of insulin for it. That means no office birthday cake without an injection, no absent-minded snacking at home, no nibbling on this or that. It can be surprisingly difficult.
12.30pm: Lunch. The same method: count carbs, inject insulin. It’s really important to balance protein and carbs and not to eat too many carbs because that can spike my blood sugar. I don’t follow a strictly low-carb diet, but I do notice the difference on days when I don’t eat too many carbs – and I know that refined carbs are the devil when it comes to blood sugar control.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible for diabetics to eat some
2.30pm: Test blood sugar to check I gave the correct dose of insulin. If it’s high, take a correction dose. If it’s low, have something sweet as a snack.
Afternoon: No snacking! Or more injecting. And on exercise days (which should be at least three days a week), more testing and probably a snack before exercising, so that the exertion doesn’t lower my blood sugar. 7pm: Dinner. Test blood sugar, count carbs, inject insulin. 9pm: Test blood sugar before bed, and take injection of long-acting insulin to keep my blood sugar stable through the night – until it’s time to wake up and do it all again! Of course, this doesn’t take into account all the variables that can be thrown at a diabetic on any given day – hormones, sickness of any description (even a
mild cold), hot weather, cold weather, unexpected amounts of exercise, stress, insulin that has overheated and isn’t working properly, delayed meals for whatever reason, not having time to eat the right kind of food, tiredness, lack of sleep, etc, etc, etc. Nobody ever said being diabetic was boring!

Using the right cooking technique paired with perfect timing, and the simple addition of natural seasoning brings flavours to the forefront. By having keen knowledge of prime ingredients and the traditional art of releasing flavour, we strive to create real taste without artificial distractions.”
Made Fresh From Scratch
Urban Energy
The brand boldly states that when it comes to food “the futute is tradition”, and calls upon recipes dating back over 200 years with great effort being made to source pure ingredients, without artificial additives. As such premium 00-grade stoneground flour, bronzedrawn artisan pasta and pure tomato pulp are imported from Italy. Fresh herbs, desert rock salt, toum and olive oil enhance the prime cuts of meat, sustainably farmed salmon trout and vegetables. Even the dipping sauces and PRIMI condiments are freshly made from scratch. Moreover, ozone is used with filtered water to clean and naturally preserve ingredients. So diners can rest assured that the tasty dishes are also packed with nutrition.

The 24-hour-matured and handstretched pizza base is topped with Italian tomatoes, Fior di Latte and mature mozzarella, and then baked till golden, fragrant and tender-crisp. A wheat- and gluten-free pizza base crafted with organic ingredients is also available. Cesco Zanasi, co-founder, PRIMI, says, “The new menu is a celebration of heritage and craftsmanship, and an exploration of flavour, depth and texture. My business neighbourhood Discover eco-friendly hemp products at Hemporium’s new shop and showroom in Westlake Business Park WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED
Neighbourhood body care and nutrition products from hemp seeds and oil, ropes and twines, paper and, more recently, construction materials. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: Our warehouse has been located in Westlake Business Park for a while. The business park is open and clean. There is plenty of greenery and views of the mountains, access to the freeway is easy, and the Southern Peninsula has a good amount of conscious consumers. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We needed a larger space than our old warehouse to expand into a showroom, shop, new warehouse and offices all under one roof. When we saw that this space was on the market, we decided to go for it.
H
emporium is a champion of everything hemp, from clothing to sustainable construction materials for a greener future. Founder Tony Budden tells us about the new flagship store in Cape Town’s South Peninsula. Q: How did your business start? A: We started in 1996 with a piece of hemp canvas that was given to us by a friend who imported fabrics from China. We started making bags and accessories, and grew from there into clothing,
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: There is plenty of space for our whole business to be centralised, from fabric storage, warehousing, cutting, fabric showroom, and the shop for our clothes, accessories and body care products. We can meet with wholesale and retail customers, get real feedback and supply bulk and single products. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Soaring Free Superfoods, Mantelli’s Biscuits, and The Green Building with an array of eco-based services.
the higher side. Well worth it if you want to combine the function and face of your business. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: We have only been open for two months, but we are already seeing better sales than we made through our shop in Long Street, so even though volume of foot traffic may be lower, the quality of customer is better. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We plan to offer space within our shop to designers who are making beautiful items with our hemp fabric, so that we can increase our offering and also help expose fledgling brands and designers to the market. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, hemporium.com is our information site about all things hemp, and hemporium.co.za is our retail site offering our products locally and internationally. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our hemp socks. If you really want to understand the benefits of wearing hemp, which is a hollow, breathable fibre with antibacterial properties, try the socks first. They abolish stinky feet and are guaranteed to become your favourites.

or visitors who love to be close to the action and get to know the city from its heart, a holiday rental in Cape Town’s CBD, or in adjoining Gardens or De Waterkant, appeals. All the sights are within walking distance, you can tap into the urban vibe rubbing shoulders with locals, and there’s a fantastic choice of eateries. Eat at a different trendy restaurant along Bree Street every day, and more hip eateries are opening on Loop Street. Long Street with its reputation for shopping and nightlife, is also attracting its fair share of good food. The Bo Kaap’s colourful Malay Quarter, the Company’s Garden and museums, the stately Belmond Mount Nelson for old-world grandeur, Greenmarket Square’s touristy market, Good Company Farmers Market on weekends in summer, and Hope Street’s weekly farmers market, are all within walking distance. The MyCiTi bus service or a short Uber ride,
connect to further essential stops such as Table Mountain, Clifton beaches and the V&A Waterfront.
THINGS TO DO: • Ride the Table Mountain Cableway • Cape Town Red Bus hop-on and hop-off, open-top bus tour • Visit the Two Oceans Aquarium • Take a boat trip to Robben Island • Visit the Galileo Open Air cinema on Thursdays at the V&A Waterfront croquet lawn in summer
A base at the V&A Waterfront is just as central, with more of a holiday vibe. Looking out over canals and the working harbour or with views of Table Mountain, visitors step out into a curated world of shops, restaurants, boat trips to Robben Island, the aquarium, artisan food stalls at the Market on the Wharf, design and crafts at the Watershed, and much more to explore. It’s easy enough to walk or ride into the CBD for sightseeing, sunset cruises leave from one of the quays daily, and watersports in the form of standup paddle boarding, kayaking and windsurfing are nearby. Both these areas are also popular choices for those visiting on business as they are close to corporate bases and conveniently offer a wide choice of excellent eateries and world-class services.
NATURE NEARBY:

CATHERINE, HOLIDAY VISITOR
Agent commentary Q: What advice would you give on getting into the market in this area? A: Find an apartment that is suitable for both holiday rentals and corporate letting. Success in your investment will hinge on minimising your off-peak vacancies. The CBD, Foreshore, the V&A Waterfront and De Waterkant are ideal areas due to their close proximity to business, the CTICC, and access to holiday hot spots such as Camps Bay, Sea Point and Green Point. If your property is in a sectional title scheme, ensure that your body corporate rules allow holiday rentals. Take a long-term view on your holiday rental, as the costs of the property, furniture and marketing are high, with the key being high occupancy levels at the right price.
Q: What attracts visitors to the area? A: The exclusive V&A Waterfront and cosmopolitan CBD are integral to Cape Town’s status as a leading worldwide tourist destination for a variety of attractions and activities to suit any pocket. From free concerts at the V&A Waterfront, hikes on Table Mountain and sunset picnics on Signal Hill, to food and craft markets, fine dining and first-class shopping, boat trips and helicopter flips. The CBD boasts museums, theatres, bars, bistros, restaurants and nightclubs. Carnival-like Long Street, trendy Bree Street and vibey Kloof Street are all at the foot of majestic Table Mountain with Camps Bay and Clifton just around the corner.
Q: What kind of return can investors expect in this area? A: Cape Town is one of the most world-renowned holiday destinations and has continued to increase in popularity in the holiday rental market. The CBD and V&A Waterfront especially enjoy high rental returns due to high demand in our summer and peak months, with rentals at more than R10,000/night for a three-bed apartment. This demand is due to it being at the heart of the CBD and CTICC and visitors looking for this proximity to superb shopping, lifestyle, fine dining experiences and unsurpassed beauty with views of either the City Centre, Table Mountain or the Atlantic Ocean.
