Krone and the crocodile The latest release from Krone’s cellars celebrates a special patch of vineyard

Let your tummy do the talking A

big part of what makes a neighbourhood unique is the people and places. Being able to pop into your local for a quick bite is one of the small pleasures of living in a great suburb. So it’s nice that these spots are getting recognisition – like at the annual Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards, which celebrates the best of the South African restaurant industry. The Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries recognise a wider range of casual restaurants and now diners have a chance to vote for their favourite.

WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES IMAGES: SUPPLIED

This is the fifth year the country’s favourite restaurants will be rewarded for their consistently good food, with results based on a 50-50 score from the public and Eat Out’s professional critics. The winners will be announced at events on 17 September in Joburg and 25 September in Cape Town.

So, get out your cellphone and give your favourite local foody joint a push into the top ranks of great South African eateries by rating and reviewing them favourably. Your vote could make a huge difference – to both the restaurant and a deserving child.

While the vagaries of the harvest are up to the weather gods, Rudiger could control which vineyard he chose to make what would become the cellar’s flagship bubbly. And for him, there was only one option: chardonnay from the famed Kaaimansgat (Crocodile’s lair) vineyards outside Villiersdorp.

And that’s just what you want when turning chardonnay into MCC. With the grapes harvested at night to preserve their flavour and acidity, the fruit was fermented with natural, wild yeasts in large 2,500-litre foudres, an upright wooden vat. It was then aged for three years on the lees, balancing acidity, fruit and freshness. It’s also a bubbly built to last, and over time more brioche, biscuity notes will evolve to balance the citrus flavours. For Rudiger it’s simply about expressing a sense of time and space. “The vineyards grow in a specific place and this wine is unique to that.” Whether you enjoy it with shellfish, wild mushrooms or mature cheese soufflé, buy a bottle and raise a toast to one of South Africa’s most famous vineyards.

To vote for their favourite local eateries, restaurant-goers can download the Eat Out app or visit eatout.co.za to rate and review the restaurants they’ve visited the last year. Diners can submit reviews for as many restaurants as they wish, but only one review per person per restaurant will count. The public and Eat Out critics’ ratings from 1 September last year to 31 July this year will be tallied to determine a shortlist for each of the categories per province. If a critic has not recently been to a restaurant that received enough public reviews, critics will have

“It was clear from day one that it had to be a blanc de blancs,” says Rudiger. “The wine will keep for longer, and there’s more expression if it’s 100% chardonnay.”

“Kaaimansgat is a unique site,” says respected viticulturist Rosa Kruger. “In summer the day temperatures are warm and sunny, and the nights cool to cold as a result of the altitude. The results of this climate are wines with a strong acidity at full ripeness and low pH.”

The categories for the 2019 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries are: Best African-inspired Eatery, Best Asian-inspired Eatery, Best Bistro, Hellmann’s Best Burger Eatery, Best Coffee Shop, Best Country-style Eatery, Best Indian-inspired Eatery, Best Italian-inspired Eatery, Best Seafood Eatery, Tramontina Best Steakhouse, Best Food Truck, Best Tapas Eatery and Best Mexican-inspired Eatery.

Customers need to submit their ratings by 31 July, and then stand a chance to win hampers worth R1,250 every two weeks. Plus, for every review submitted, Eat Out feeds a hungry child through Rise Against Hunger.

Inspired by the terroir-driven “grower champagnes” of France, Krone’s chief winemaker Rudiger Gretschel set out to craft a cap classique that would showcase both the vintage and the vineyard.

Situated in the Elandskloof ward, some 700m above sea level, the Kaaimansgat vines lie in a valley encircled by mountains. In the summer the day’s heat settles in the bowl, while in winter the surrounding peaks lie dusted in snow.

the month of August to visit and review to determine the category winners.

Says Selvin Govender, marketing director, Mercedes-Benz Cars, “At Mercedes-Benz, we believe quality and excellence are traits that deserve to be celebrated. The Best Everyday Eateries allow us to acknowledge those casual restaurants that have won the hearts of their loyal customers.”

I

t may be winter, but that’s no reason to steer clear of a crisp glass of méthode cap classique. And the latest offering from bubbly specialist Krone is well worth discovering.

Restaurants need to be listed on eatout.co.za (and therefore the Eat Out app) to receive reviews and ratings. Restaurants that are not listed can go to eatout.co.za/venue-register to register or contact info@eatout.co.za to have their details added free of charge.

GOOD, better, best Situated in the thriving development hub that is Woodstock, GOOD is a modern multi-layered new space offering co-working areas, health and wellness, and retail WORDS: CARLA REDELINGHUYS

O

ver the past decade, Woodstock has seen massive development, bringing with it quite a bit of controversy. One new development is GOOD, situated in the old Iron Works building on Sir Lowry Road. The team behind GOOD is acutely aware of the challenges of being the new kids on the block and the perceptions of more established residents and business owners.

J

ust as geese always return home after their migration, chef Gustaaf Boshoff is back in his home town, opening his first restaurant in the heart of Stellenbosch after an extended “surf” trip around the world. This happened to include working in Michelin-starred restaurants, private cheffing in New York, stints on yachts, and two months in Tahiti, among other adventures. The Green Goose Eatery – green for the sustainable approach using small local suppliers – manages to be both everyday eatery and chic foodie and cocktail spot, taking inspiration from the tastes encountered on those travels,

as well as embracing unintimidating comfort food that feels like home. The small plate section expresses Gustaaf’s global influences. We shared a chunky tuna ceviche with Vietnamese dressing, warm ginger, salted lime and edamame beans, and a tender pork belly with apple, mustard and celeriac, and wasabi on puffed crackling adding a pop of fusion heat. Then gorgeous black squid ink arancini with chargrilled octopus and black garlic aioli. “My strength, growing up near the coast and loving the ocean, is seafood. It’s my favourite thing to cook with,” says Gustaaf. That day’s delivery from the Abalobi small-scale fishers’ programme inspired him to add a sparkling fresh fillet of red stumpnose to the prawn laksa coconut curry for us – later roasting a whole fish in the woodfired pizza oven for another table. The pizza oven was inherited with the premises. No longer used for pizza but still constantly fired up, Gustaaf uses it to bake flatbreads and homely mains such as delicious wagyu beef lasagne, and moussaka made with fall-apart lamb that had slow-braised overnight as the embers cooled. Gustaaf’s enthusiasm for small-scale producers extends to his wine list, some gems of boutique wines available by the glass. We loved the fresh and fruity Swan and Unicorn Sauvignon Blanc, and Usana’s deep and velvety cabernet sauvignon – just what was needed to put heart into a winter day. We finished off with a classic Valrhona chocolate fondant, oozing hot liquid chocolate onto a granadilla curd, with olive oil ice cream and a subtle twist of salty pretzel crumbs. The Green Goose is a fabulous addition to central Stellenbosch whether you want a quick sustaining lunch, a foodie evening out, or cocktails and a few small plates after work, and it serves breakfasts too.

As a former resident of the neighbourhood and seeing big building after big building spring up, I’ve always had a feeling of ambiguity about the changes. So I thought it would be a good idea to get the view of someone closely involved in the process. One of the brains behind GOOD, Murray Clark, took time to tackle a few difficult topics. Q: Please elaborate on what you mean when you say “the GOOD team plans to reinvent physical and commercial developments to benefit the communities in which they operate”. A: There’s no denying that Woodstock has been earmarked for development and has been for the past decade and with this development comes displacement and gentrification. In terms of our specific business, we’re trying to bridge the gap between the development in our area and the surrounding communities. It’ll be a long road which we’re adamant to walk. It’s our goal to create environments where business, communities and the environment can sustainably co-exist. We’ve not set out to try and change perceptions of inflated rental prices because these prices unfortunately are not ours to set, but rather the developers. However, GOOD is working towards being inclusive to the immediate surrounding community through employment

opportunities and favourable rental deals that make small business conditions sustainable. GOOD’s business model is centred around a shared economy model and differs from a traditional development scheme where space rentals go to the highest bidder. GOOD’s shared economy model allows favourable rental conditions to smaller businesses that are locally placed. GOODPeople, one of the six layers of GOOD, is our registered NPO that GOOD runs all community and environment projects through. Currently we’re undertaking the Gympie Road Percent Caretaker plan which aims to make the area between Trafalgar Park and Woodstock Exchange safer and clean for all residents and businesses. Q: What was the inspiration behind GOOD? A: GOOD was born out of Big Box, a development in rural KwaMashu, Durban that focusses on supporting entrepreneurs from that community, who own and operate businesses in lower LSM areas across South Africa. The foundations which Big Box is built on remains the same as those which GOOD was built on. GOOD focusses on working towards becoming a total societal impact company through asking – in every decision – is it good for the environment, the people, sustainable business, and conscious living? All of the above is summed up in our existence statement: GOOD exists to build spaces that enable business, society and the environment to sustainably co-exist, and to redefine “sustainability” as the complete overhaul of the way we produce, consume and create.

Multigenerational estates make sense Lifestyle developments increasingly embrace young, old and everyone in between WORDS: HELEN GRANGE

M

ultigenerational living has been a growing trend in SA for economic and security reasons, but also because three, or even four generations living in close proximity promotes a healthy social balance. Lifestyle estates are increasingly embracing young, old and everyone in between, in sectional title homes as well as rental apartments, comprising facilities that cater to children, working adults and those in their golden years, and providing convenience and security. “Mixed-use developments are a relatively new phenomenon in SA, but globally they’ve been trending for many years,” says Amdec Property Developments’ MD Nicholas Stopforth. “It’s called new urbanism, and it’s today’s lifestyle of choice. The demand is high, because they also offer excellent investment opportunities,” says Stopforth.

Lifestyle estates such as Steyn City in Midrand, Sibaya Coastal Precinct in KwaZulu-Natal and Val de Vie in the Western Cape have all gone this route, offering an enviable lifestyle replete with nearby schools, shops, medical or care facilities, and every manner of sport or leisure activity.

STEYN CITY, GAUTENG

KINDLEWOOD, KZN

“The apartments and shops will be wheelchair-friendly and children have the option to attend Steyn City School,” says Marie Yossava, spokesperson, Steyn City. “There are several play and recreational nodes within the parkland residence, including a skate park for teens. There are also office blocks in our commercial park.” Many estates include separate retirement villages within the development. A good example is Century Property Developments’ Waterfall Estates between Kyalami and Sandton in Midrand, embracing Waterfall Hills and Waterfall Valley mature lifestyle estates. Aside from the myriad of facilities expected of a top lifestyle estate – sport, walking trails, gym, pool, coffee shop, restaurant, movie theatre, hairdresser and health spa – retirees and the elderly have access to onsite nursing staff that can provide assisted-living services and a frail care facility at Waterfall Hills Mature Lifestyle Estate.

And as they evolve, these multigenerational estates are embracing more investment brackets, offering a mix of apartments, townhouses and freestanding units of one to five bedrooms, priced anywhere from about R1m to R20m and beyond.

“The choice of houses, cluster homes, apartments and retirement homes as either rental or investment opportunities means you’re accommodated in every life stage from young adult, to having a family, then grandchildren, to downscaling to a lock-up-and-go,” says Jessica Hofmeyr, Century Property Developments executive for sales, rental, marketing and operations.

Western Cape

Steyn City is a prime example of a multigenerational estate, with its huge diversity of owners and tenants and range of properties priced from about R2,2m to more than R25m. Its “city centre” will include about 739 apartments and a central piazza with retail, restaurants and lifestyle offerings.

The prestigious Val de Vie estate near Paarl in the Cape winelands has also embraced retirees more fully with Val de Vie Evergreen. It’s aimed at over 60s with the offer of 400 exclusive homes, 208 apartments and an 80-bed frail care facility. “Our resident demographics are evenly split between those

commuting, those working from home, and retired couples. The buyers are discerning and want excellent investments in the long term,” says Val de Vie’s group marketing director Ryk Neethling. Nearer Cape Town is De Plattekloof Lifestyle Estate, aimed at over 50s, which includes homes, apartments and the Tijgerzicht assisted-living suites. Century City near Canal Walk is another sought-after multigenerational estate, offering contemporary penthouses, family homes and spacious apartments. Buh-Rein Estate near Durbanville is attracting firsttime buyers to its townhouses and apartments, as well as retirees who have a choice of independent-living and assisted-living apartments.

Eastern Cape The mixed-use, multigenerational estate has come to Port Elizabeth in Amdec’s Westbrook Estate. The development will comprise 3,500 homes spread across nine residential villages with a “town square” and a variety of commercial and retail space.

CENTURY PRECINCT, WESTERN CAPE

“We cater to everyone – from firsttime buyers and small families, to empty nesters who don’t yet want to move into a retirement village,” says Westbrook MD Clifford Oosthuizen. You can get cheaper houses in the city, but your investment value simply won’t increase as fast or by as much.

KIDDS BEACH, EASTERN CAPE

In East London, Kidds Beach Green Estate comprises six estates with homes ranging in price from R700,000 to R10m. The estate caters to growing families, investors and luxury buyers. Amenities include private schools, a shopping centre, office parks, a private hospital, a high-performance sports centre and a hotel and conference centre. An assisted-living section offering 200 retirement rental units based on the life rights model is planned.

KZN The KwaZulu-Natal northern seaboard is dotted with multigenerational estates. Sibaya Coastal Precinct in Umhlanga includes Shoreline Sibaya, which consists of 400 modern single-level sectional title apartments for over 55s in a wheelchair-friendly environment. “Research from the Retire KZN campaign indicates that approximately 43% of retirees now look for a property price point of between R1m and R2,5m. The studio apartments at Shoreline Sibaya start at R1,4m while one-bedroom apartments begin at R1,9m,” says Louise Hunt, spokesperson for Sibaya Coastal Precinct. “Because of the increasing interest in retirement property as an investment opportunity, the developers have permitted buyers as young as 20, although occupation only occurs once the homeowner turns 55,” says Hunt.

Phases Kindlewood Estate in Mount Edgecombe attracts a full range of investors, from first-time buyers looking to establish their roots through to retired couples seeking an active, outdoor lifestyle. “Kindlewood has homes and facilities suited to every phase of life,” says Mondli Msani, development manager, Tongaat Hulett Developments. Kindlewood developments include Norfolk Valley, The Links, Kindlewood Crest, The Kindles, Kariwood, Edenwood, The Wolds and the newly launched Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village. Zimbali Lakes Resort north of Ballito extended its cross-generational appeal as Evergreen Lifestyle launched a R3bn retirement offering last year. Evergreen Lifestyle Zimbali Lakes includes apartments to be sold on a life rights basis and an array of luxury lifestyle amenities is in the pipeline. Close by is Brettenwood Coastal Estate, with its retirement offering of Forest Village. Further north, Palm Lakes Family Estate, a development with a full suite of facilities, includes the Lakes Retirement Village, which tailor-makes a retirement home package to suit individual needs. These range from full title homes to sectional title. The development includes a healthcare centre.
