eing a mom can be challenging – you have to juggle so many roles while still maintaining your cool. And often you don’t really get the credit you deserve. So today, we give you permission to take things easy and let those you love spoil you – go on, you deserve it!

cross 300 years of winemaking there has been no shortage of great matriarchs to define and inspire the cellars of the Cape Winelands.

Ansela van de Caab, Muratie This full-bodied Bordeaux-style red blend honours the remarkable story of Ansela van de Caab. Born into slavery within the walls of the Cape Town Castle in the late-1600s, she fell in love with Laurens Campher, who was granted the lands of modernday Muratie estate. The pair later married and lived out their days on the farm beneath the Simonsberg.

Lady May, Glenelly

2

CBD Yes, the traffic in the CBD is bad, but living here is so great that it’s worth it JASON CHETTY, RESIDENT

The flagship wine of Stellenbosch estate, Glenelly, pays tribute to Madame May de Lencquesaing. Born into a long line of Bordelaise winemakers, in 2003 she sold her ancestral home of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Bordeaux and moved to South Africa. In the decade since, she has transformed the Glenelly estate from a valley of orchards into a leading producer of red wines imbued with old-world elegance. Likewise, the Lady May is a suitably elegant Bordeaux blend dominated

by Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2012 vintage is due for release in mid-2017.

Maria, Neethlingshof

Arguably the flagship of Neethlinghof’s The Six Flowers range, “Maria” is named for Maria Magdalena Marais, the young widow who in 1814 first cemented the reputation of this Stellenbosch estate. The Weisser Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this Noble Late Harvest are sourced from dryland vineyards on the high slopes of the farm, where sea mists from False Bay help create the perfect conditions for Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) to flourish.

The First Lady, Warwick Estate

Norma Ratcliffe’s playful nickname as the “First Lady” of the South African wine industry doesn’t do justice to her trailblazing role in opening the doors of Cape cellars to women. She was the first female member of the Cape Winemakers Guild, served as its first female chairperson in 1993, and remains an honorary member. She has also been awarded the 1659 Medal of Honour for her contributions to the South African wine industry, and plays a key role in the Guild’s Protégé Programme mentoring young winemakers from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. This 100% Cabernet is vibrant, energetic and full of life, just like its namesake.

The Eleanor, Hartenberg

The Finlayson name is well known in the Cape Winelands, from the Simonsberg to the Hemel-enAarde valley. This elegant premium Chardonnay is named for Eleanor Finlayson, wife of well-known pathologist Dr Walter Finlayson who owned acclaimed Stellenbosch estate Hartenberg – then named Montagne – for nearly 30 years. A top-drawer wooded Chardonnay for a special occasion.

3 CBD

The Castle of Good Hope, which was built between 1666 and 1679, is the oldest existing colonial building in the country.

T

he vision of Kamers was to create a supportive environment where female designers and artisans could come together and celebrate their handmade crafts while also empowering each another through entrepreneurship. From just 40 exhibitors at the first Kamers event, which hosted around 800 visitors, Kamers/Makers, as it’s now known, now sees more than 60,000 visitors across its Johannesburg and Cape Town legs. The event is the premium platform for some of South Africa’s best designers, vintners and chefs. They have the opportunity to showcase their various talents and wares in a supportive environment. Visitors can expect a showcase of the best crafts Capetonians have to offer. Partnering with Absa, this year’s Kamers event is committed to taking entrepreneurial opportunities to the community while also focusing on job creation. “If there’s a single phrase that can sum up the Kamers ethos, it might be this: gentle and genuine,” says the Kamers team. A visit to the event offers face-to-face encounters with the producers of authentic handmade art and delicacies in a beautiful setting. Tickets are available from plankton. mobi and at the entrance, and include a Kamers shopper bag and magazine. The show will run from 24 to 28 May from 9am to 5pm at the Castle of Good Hope. For those unable to make it to the show (or for those who simply can’t wait), Kamers products are available online at shop.kamersvol.com. The show promises to deliver five fantastic days and a memorable experience.

Heads-up The sustainable approach to food at La Tete is real, honest and absolutely delicious WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

IMAGE: CLAIRE GUNN

T

he “nose to tail” tag is too narrow for what chef Giles Edwards is cooking up at La Tete on Bree Street. Sure, there are intriguing dishes from the less glamorous parts of the animal, but there are also several fish and vegetarian dishes on the menu which changes daily – the fried fish sandwich being a lunchtime favourite for regulars. “I prefer sustainability – it’s a circle of food,” says Giles. “Everyone is raising amazing animals – Boschendal, Spier, Glen Oakes, Oak Valley – but no one is using the offal. I’m completing that circle. We need to consume everything as it becomes available, be it a quince in season, be it a heart or be it hake. It’s not about nose-to-tail, it’s about consumption of local, sustainable products.” The French inspiration is in more than just the name: the simple, almost stark, decor puts the focus firmly on the food, and the unpretentious dishes would be welcomed by any gourmand. “The French are the masters of no waste,” says Giles. “I love the food and culture in France and on the continent.”

Giles makes it easy to fall in love with the more outlandish cuts of meat: perfectly cooked and presented, you’re so transported by the flavour you forget about anatomy. The pig’s cheek is as crispy and tasty as the pork belly, with a crunchy salad of radishes, watercress and mustardy dressing; pig’s trotters come as a cupful of rich stew with a quail’s egg shakshuka style, every mouthful a treat; chicken hearts come in a rich spicy gravy with a crispy layered potato bake – all wowing us as shared starters. For mains, I was intrigued by Giles’s claim that ox heart as a leaner, cleaner alternative to steak. With chunky chips and homemade horseradish sauce, it packed all the flavour punch of the best steak and convinced us once and for all that we’ve all been missing out by equating offal with the worst of school food memories. The no waste philosophy extends to dessert: the floating island, meringue poached in a rich custard, uses up leftover egg whites; and a delicate jelly was inspired by an abundance of quinces. With the menu changing daily, a constantly evolving wine list, and great coffee, La Tete restaurant is one to visit often.

My business neighbourhood Jenna Engledoe creates stunning statement jewellery in a shared studio space in Gardens WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED

A: Rawjoy was born over a few years of creating different designs and showcasing at various markets. Joining with the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) was the best decision that I’ve ever made. The support, guidance and programmes available were amazing, and I know if I need any advice in the future I can go and see them. I applied to be part of the CCDI collective shop at the Watershed, which was such a learning experience. Every time I thought that I wasn’t ready, the CCDI assured me that I was. As my contract finished there, I was offered my own space at the Watershed. I’ve been so blessed by all these amazing people who gave me and our brand Rawjoy a chance to make a dream come true. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: It chose me. I was interested in sharing space with another creative person and I ended up with many more.

C

hunky semi-precious stones and soft leather are the secret of Rawjoy’s unforgettable style. Designer Jenna Engledoe tells us more about her business. Q: How did your business start? A: About 10 years ago, after resigning from a permanent job, I knew that I needed to express myself through making something with my hands. Jewellery had always been a hobby. I picked up my pliers and just started playing around with ideas.

Q: How did you find your premises? A: A friend of mine informed me of the space. They were looking for creatives to create a collective working environment, which was exciting for me. Hannah Lavery from Hannah Clothing leased the floor of the premises and has created a beautiful collective studio space for all of us to work in. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It’s situated close to my suppliers and my shop at the Watershed. I love working from my studio and being surrounded by like-minded creative souls. For the first time

I have a network of support and I’m surrounded by a positive atmosphere daily. It’s given me the space to grow my business. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: In the studio there are ceramicists, clothing designers, jewellery designers and artists. Outside the studio there are an array of different businesses, from car repairs to fitness gyms, nursery schools, schools and apartments. Q: W hat are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: A ll I know is that because we have a sharing space, it’s very affordable for the size studio I have to work in. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: We’re currently more of a working studio, but we do see clients by appointment. Q: D o you have any expansion plans? A: For my business, absolutely. We’d like to expand into belts and bags and eventually small pieces of furniture. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We will in the next few months. Q: W hat’s your most popular item? A: Currently our leather wraps and cuffs with semi-precious stones.

New, contemporary apartment block for Sea Point

S

trand Beach, a contemporary five-storey apartment block in High Level Road, Sea Point, is the latest residential project by Atlantic Seaboard property professionals Berman Bros Group (BBG). The neighbourhood has achieved some of the highest property value growth rates in the country thanks to its superb natural geography, proximity to town and the Waterfront, and the outdoor, healthy lifestyle on offer. “We recognised the potential of this property a while ago and are very

excited to start work on realising BBG’s vision for this special location,” says Paul Berman, CEO, BBG. “The innovative design opens up each apartment to natural light and sweeping views over the Atlantic, while contemporary finishes add the final touch to what will certainly become a sought-after address in upper Sea Point. “The property’s elevated position on the slopes of Signal Hill allows for spectacular sea views and wind

protection, while its position in the middle of the Atlantic Seaboard gives easy access to both the city and Cape Town’s most popular beaches and attractions on the coastline.” Once complete, Strand Beach Sea Point will offer 34 residences within a secure, access-controlled perimeter, and comprising one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The ground floor apartments will have their own private garden and pool, in addition to the communal entertainment deck and pool area.

The deteriorating credit profiles of many tenants are becoming evident to landlords and to managing agents currently screening new tenants, and this is also confirmed by the latest TPN credit profile analysis. This shows that among active tenants, 4,2% shifted from having an “excellent” or “good” credit profile to having just an “average” profile in the 12 months to end-October 2016. ales for highly sought-after units in Phase 3 of the Renishaw Hills mature lifestyle development will open later this year, with only four units still available in the Phase 2 development. Phase 1 of the development, which is nearing completion, includes 27 freestanding homes made up of two- and three-bedroom units, all of which have been sold. Occupation is planned for between August and December of this year with occupation of the 31 Phase 2 units planned for the first half of 2018. These include 19 freestanding homes and 12 maisonettes, with only four of the maisonettes still available for purchase. Residents who take occupation this year will be able to enjoy the facilities of the temporary Community Centre consisting of lounge and dining areas, an expansive patio

with ocean views, a games room, library and gym. Integrated into the Community Centre is a Care Centre providing residents with top-level medical attention. This will include a reception area, examination room and two-bedroom ward, all serving as a temporary measure before construction of the fully equipped 80bed Healthcare Centre begins in 2018. Rehabilitation of the wetlands area of Renishaw Hills, which started two years ago, is continuing under the direction of leading expert in rehabilitation in KwaZulu-Natal, Geoff Nichols, and renowned South African landscaper and botanist, Elsa Pooley. To this end, sugar cane is being eradicated, without the use of harmful chemicals, while invasive alien plants are also being identified and removed. The regrowth of indigenous flora is proving successful with plant species sourced from the local Izinyoni Indigenous Nursery.

ummer beach living, whalewatching in winter and stunning scenery all year round, the things that make Hermanus such a popular spot for weekend geataways and holidays are also the big attraction for permanent residents. “It’s a totally beautiful town, with the ocean close by, hiking in the mountains and a lovely wine route extending into the valley,” says Silke Raudzus, who moved to the area 12 years ago to be near family. “There’s always something for kids to do here, and a very good school in Hermanus High School.” It’s the small town vibe and strong sense of community that have preserved the charm of Hermanus over the years, with quirky shops and cafes at the heart of the town. The story goes that back in the day, the people of Hermanus objected so strongly to a railway line being built, not wanting their village to be inundated with holidaymakers, that

the plan was abandoned, leaving it with a train station but no trains. Nowadays, holidaymakers have found their way there independently but the “village” has grown enough to accommodate them comfortably and the thriving tourist industry contributes greatly to the local economy and the vibrancy of the town. “Whale festival time (at the end of September) is when this little town hums,” says Soubie van der Merwe who used to visit for weekends and holidays with her children for many years before moving here permanently 19 years ago. “Streets are closed, stalls come out, there's music everywhere and fun things to do.” She enjoys the contrast between the peaceful weekdays and the busy weekends. “The Saturday morning farmers' market is a must. Her son rates the birdwatching from the cliffs and mountains among the top five in the Western Cape. Her daughter loves the Whale Museum and the whole family enjoy long walks along the Blue Flag Grotto Beach and sunset picnics on the rocks. Hermanus’s first mall is due to open at the end of 2017. Until now, the growing resident population has driven over the mountain to Somerset West for brand retailers, services and movie theatres. Despite this injection of city culture, the spirited village retains its quirky charm and welcoming atmosphere.
