The picture of health

M

ost people overindulge over the Easter long weekend, filling up on chocolate eggs, braais and roasts, and generally avoid exercise. It seems almost perfect then that April is also Health Awareness Month.

As the mornings and evenings get colder, most people (myself included) are finding it harder to hit the gym or to opt for a salad rather than some comfort food. But the truth is that overindulging has a negative effect on overall health. This is why I hope you’ll join me as I pledge to adopt a healthier, more active lifestyle.

“A

wine bar for nice people.” That payoff line may well be true, but it’s also something of an understatement when it comes to Publik Wine Bar. Over the past five years, and now in its third incarnation, the wine bar started by David Cope has become the go-to venue in the City Bowl for discovering some of South Africa’s most adventurous wineries. Previously occupying a corner of Ash restaurant on Church Street, Publik has now moved into its own space on Kloof Nek Road, taking up the storefront once home to Asian-tapas joint Hallelujah.

What? Bot River Barrels & Beards When and Where? Saturday, 21 April, from 5pm until late at Wildekrans Wine Estate un with the bull this year at none other than Bot River Barrels & Beards. This year, the region’s wineries have grabbed the proverbial bull by the horns and incorporated the Taurean theme in every aspect of preparations.

It’s a cosy space where the bar counter dominates. Pull up a stool or, if you’re lucky, take one of the low tables against the opposite wall. The decor is sparse and the bar can get cramped when busy, but that’s no real hardship as it’s the kind of joint where you’ll likely spend an hour over a glass, or bottle, of great wine before heading elsewhere.

effort into compiling an ever-changing list of niche producers and unusual cultivars, with a particular focus on sustainably farmed vineyards and wines made with minimal tinkering in the cellar. Don’t expect mass-market labels and branded umbrellas here, rather discover the likes of Carinus Family Vineyards, Fram wines and the Flotsam & Jetsam range from Alheit Vineyards. To complement the wine, you’ll find good-quality stemware and knowledgeable staff behind the bar. There’s also a selection of craft beers and spirits on offer. Feeling peckish? David and manager Chris Groenewald have rustled up a mouth-watering selection of local charcuterie (from Richard Bosman and Frankie Fenner) and artisanal cheeses – from as far afield as Langbaken, near Williston in the Karoo – to snack on while you sip. All in all, it’s a fine new addition to this buzzing corner of Kloof Nek Road. About the only downside is that the small space fills up quickly, so get there early for after-work drinks.

A culinary journey Indulge in sustainable seafood and fresh local flavour at Leeto in Paternoster

Mind the gap

WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED

D

riving up the West Coast to Paternoster is a glorious escape to a simpler life of beach, fishing boats and big skies. At Garth Almazan’s new restaurant, Leeto, the veranda looks out at uninterrupted vistas of fynbos reserve and long white-sand beach, with a winding path enticing you to run barefoot down to the waves. It’s a blissful beach retreat attached to the Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel, the last building at the north end of the village, with nothing but nature beyond.

Enjoy the tastes, sights and sounds of London at The Station on Bree WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE

IMAGES: SUPPLIED

L

ocated on Cape Town’s hippest foodie street, The Station on Bree has become the go-to spot for First Thursdays meet-ups, Tuning the Vine or a lively Friday or Saturday meal. It was a buzzing Thursday night when we were invited to sample the menu, atmosphere and live music.

Leeto is the Khoi word for journey. For Garth and his wife Cecile, having moved from Catharina’s in the Constantia Wine Valley, it’s a whole new life. Garth has immersed himself in the small fishing community, moving away from the intricacy of his fine dining menus to create food that reflects the local landscapes. “My approach is much simpler,” he says. This was clear to see in the sparkling fresh angelfish tartare, bound with Japanese mayo and avo with fennel oil and a crumbed deep-fried mussel on the side. It was simple but perfectly balanced and intensely pleasurable. Sustainable seafood is the focus at Leeto and Garth makes no compromises. If the local fishermen bring in West Coast rock lobster (a now endangered local delicacy currently on the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative red list), you won’t find it here, but when they catch the local black bream it’s off the boats and onto the lunch menu within hours. Cecile goes daily to meet the catch coming into Saldanha Bay, and the short menu is designed accordingly. We were welcomed with oysters fresh off the boat, followed by a taster of gorgeous plump mussels in a spicy Cape Malay curry sauce. Our yellowtail was beautifully presented with a luscious prawn samosa, grilled calamari, asparagus, lime butter and sprinkled with garlic flowers – absolutely delicious. Springbok loin sat sumptuously on a bed of wild mushrooms, with sweet potato purée, pickled mushrooms and tart gooseberries to offset the richness. It was a beautiful leisurely lunch and it was hard to tear ourselves away after Garth’s chocolate delice and berry terrine. Deeply satisfied and replete on the food front we craved more Paternoster peace. A long beach walk followed by a lazy evening soaking up more of the soul-soothing views was a fitting conclusion to this inspiring culinary journey.

As soon as you walk in, it’s hard not to notice the decor. Founder Neil Basel says the theme is “inspired by the underground stations of London itself and the colours, sights and sounds that each station has to offer.” The decor features the trademark Underground seating and a station map that covers the ceiling, with the stops named after musicians. There’s also a red telephone booth and even speakers in the bathroom playing the sounds of the Underground. We were promptly shown to our table in the courtyard and were eager to see if the food lived up to the reputation of Bree Street. We were not disappointed. The menu is laidback with the focus on simple, tasty dishes with something for everyone. Neil describes the style of cooking at The Station as “no pretensions, easy comfort food, which appeals to the palates of a wide variety of people.” We started with the London Hot Eye Beef Pan (cubed sirloin in a creamy peri-peri sauce, served with

homemade ciabatta). I’m a huge fan of spicy food and loved that the flavours came through well without completely overpowering the dish or my palate for the next course. For mains, we decided to go international – a true reflection, I think, of the melting pot that is London. We tucked into the Cuban grilled sandwich (filled with layers of gypsy ham, cheese, chorizo and zucchini pickles, served with fries) and the Chicken Kiev (smothered in a delicious creamy Parmesan and truffle mushroom sauce). This hit the spot and was the perfect comfort food for a night out on the town. After our meal, it was time to enjoy the Cape Town nightlife with The Station’s weekly Thursday Reveal hosted by talented local musicians and internationally renowned DJ, saxophonist and percussion specialist, George Sax. Another delight is The Station’s gin menu, which offers visitors the chance to craft their own G&T, layering botanical flavours with an assortment of lively flavours. What’s next for The Station? Neil tells us, “As we start heading into the change of season, we’ll start introducing the traditional elements of winter in London, which is synonymous with visiting this metropolitan city – from food and drinks to entertainment.”

My business neighbourhood Carley Studios in Green Point offers innovative wellness, beauty and slimming treatments WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED

S

taying on top of innovative beauty trends, Carley Studios is a new wellness, beauty and slimming salon that offers an array of treatments, including the FIR (Far Infrared) Sauna Dome. Owner Carmen Shamley is a full-time, first-class cabin crew member and runs Carley Studios with the assistance of a strong team on the ground. She tells us more about the business.

Q: How did your business start? A: I’m originally from Port Elizabeth and have been living in Dubai for nearly seven years. Working in the aviation industry, I started flying to Cape Town on a regular basis and decided that this was the place for me – the city I wanted to eventually call home. I started looking for business opportunities that I could manage from 40,000ft. Having travelled the world, I’ve visited many salons and experienced high levels of customer service along the way. I wanted to create a salon that reflects this level of international professionalism

and customer service. In April last year, the planning for the salon became a reality and we opened later that year in August. We’ve just rebranded as Carley Studios as a way to explore and grow within the beauty, wellness and slimming industry. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I love Green Point, its hustle and bustle; it’s a beautiful neighbourhood. Carley Studios is also close to the crew hotel, so it’s easy for my colleagues in aviation to use our services. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I was on holiday in Cape Town, walking around and breathing in the magic of Green Point. The space caught my eye and my heart was immediately set on it! Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: We’re in the centre of it all – business, retail and residential, the perfect combination! Another plus is that we have parking available for our clients, in an area where that’s often not the case, so it’s super convenient. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We’re surrounded by residential apartments, Beluga restaurant, Jetline printing, Limnos Bakers, with the Cape Quarter within walking distance. Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: The rental and sales markets in the

area are very competitive, with new apartment blocks being sold out before construction even starts. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: We have a consistent flow of clients, with long-standing and loyal customers filling up the treatment rooms on a regular basis. With the new look, name and offerings, we’re excited to see what the future holds! Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We’re opening a second Carley Studios in Port Elizabeth this year! The business in Port Elizabeth will also include a hair salon – it really will be a one-stop shop! Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have various salon products on sale at the studio, which we’ll be offering via an online store. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: The FIR (Far Infrared) Sauna Dome, which has amazing health benefits for natural pain management and relaxation. Then the in-body scanner for body composition analysis. We’re also very excited about our LED phototherapy mask, which includes a neck mask.

Off the wall

Wallpaper is making a comeback as an artistic decor item WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGES: SUPPLIED & SHUTTERSTOCK

“W

allpaper is here to stay,” says Karen Nelson-Palmer, owner of Wall-paper. And although wallpaper is more expensive than paint, Karen says you can’t compare the two. “Paint application is a single texture; wallpaper can be so many. And the materials it’s made from vary considerably. It can be vinyl, paper, embossed, flocked, metallic, wooden veneer, cork, grass cloth, have Swarovski crystals attached – the possibilities are endless!”

Today’s wallpapers

Yesteryear’s wallpapers had a certain formality to them, but today, they can create or contribute to any mood you choose. From world maps to black-and-white images or newsprint, there’s a wallpaper for every purpose. A single wall wallpapered with monochrome images of vintage telephones turns a beautiful, cool home office from clinical to classic.

Local and international

Internationally, wallpaper has exploded and become exciting for interior designers and decorators. “We import mainly from the UK, Belgium

Polk Sunday Times Neighbourhood Ad 12 April 2018 curves.indd 1

and the US, and they’re surprisingly affordable,” says Karen. South African brands are also growing in popularity. “Some South African fabric designers, image gurus or distributors, like Robin Sprong or Clinton Friedman, are very popular,” she adds.

Walls and ceilings

Wallpaper can also create the illusion of changing the room’s dimensions, like the effect of pale or dark colours bringing a wall forward or pushing it back. Wallpaper with thin vertical stripes can seem to raise the ceiling in a cramped space. Wallpapers can even accentuate a surface. Karen says, “We’re papering a lot of ceilings. From classic pressed ceiling designs to artificial brickwork, papered ceilings can be fun, creating a fantastic textured area.” Karen also considers cleverly chosen wallpaper on a feature wall to be a really affordable alternative to changing curtains or scatter cushions.

Local trends

South Africans are still riding the wave of local imagery and nature, with the escape it represents from today’s

techno world featuring strongly in wallpaper choices. The “back to nature” trend isn’t exclusively South African, of course, nature motifs are huge globally, even if there’s been a maturing of the trend with the introduction of genuine texture, metallic touches and fresh takes on older themes. Natural wood grains and plant patterns continue the story, but once again, with a twist. Botanical prints have also been incorporated into sensational fabrics and wallpapers, some with dark and mysterious animal prints, and others with lighter and more quirky designs. Karen says, “I’m seeing leafy designs not in natural shades, but rather in new vibrant colours, with strong geometric designs coming through for 2018.”

Last word

Wallpaper, like art, has the dual purpose of making the home more visually appealing and allowing visitors to gain insight into the homeowner’s life experience. The wide range of wallpapers available locally and internationally allows homeowners to be brave and play a little. If it no longer works in a few years, you can change it. It’s that simple.

helley Gordon is one half of the singing duo G&T, which she and Sarah-Jane Thomas formed last year, managed by Stereotype Records in South Africa and represented

Home sweet home “I grew up in Kuils River and I’ve always been in the north. I like the fact that people are very down to earth in the Northern Suburbs,” says Shelley. “I grew up playing in the road with family all around and many of my family still live in the area.” She also chose this part of Durbanville for its convenience. “It’s very central – I just hop onto the N1 and I’m in the centre of town, as most of our gigs are there. I live in a secure apartment

Being in the Northern Suburbs is like a mini holiday. The pace of life is more relaxed. It’s got a modern but rustic feel. I’ve grown up with that relaxed lifestyle and it’s what I love. complex and it feels very safe, which is important to me when I’m coming back late from gigs. Spaces are much bigger than you get in town, for the price you’d pay for a small apartment in town, you’d get a whole house here, more for your money. It’s also nice to get away from the bustle of town.” She says Durbanville is also perfect for her second love. “I’m very into fitness and there are many open spaces and parks where I can run here. It feels quite safe to go out running because it’s a residential neighbourhood where people are always around. We also have a gym within the complex, so I don’t have to go far to workout.”

Another attraction is the surrounding countryside, not just the Tygerberg Nature Reserve with its trails for running and mountain biking but also the wine estates. “I’ve grown to love wine and we’re surrounded by wine farms, not just the Durbanville wine route, but the Stellenbosch one too. Many of the wine farms around here have really great food, so every Saturday or Sunday, if I’m not working, we like to ride out to a different location to explore.” There’s plenty of choice when it comes to shopping too, Shelley says. “I’m less than a kilometre from Tyger Valley mall, which has everything I need. Then Willowbridge is a great open-air shopping mall. I like the Dis-Chem there; I like buying supplements and healthy things – it’s like a convenience store for me. The centre of Durbanville has lots of little pubs and small shops and boutiques rather than chain stores.”

Neighbourhood gems “Durbanville Hills is one of my favourite restaurants. I like to eat clean and it has great steaks,” says Shelley. “Buena Vista on the way to Stellenbosch is great for Cuban food.
