The Indian influence of this new Silo District institution has infused itself into the high tea, with overtones of spices, and aromatic teas imported from India. Share a tiered cake stand between two for an accessible and indulgent afternoon with friends in a curved leather booth around a brasstopped table. We took the edge off hunger with substantial, mildly-spiced chicken kathi wraps and mini aloo tikki burgers inspired by Indian street food, before diving into the creative interpretations of traditional sweet treats. We particularly enjoyed the gulab jamun cheesecake, the saffronspiced carrot cake and the miso-glazed eclair filled with orange mousse. And the chocolate samosa studded with nuts is one to fight over. The imported tea blends include traditional Oolong and English breakfast, as well as a flowery bouquet tea redolent of roses and a refreshing Moroccan mint tea.

f you didn’t know any better, you may drive through McGregor’s high street and think of it as a dusty one-horse town. But as a smalltown girl myself, I know there’s always more to these places than meets the eye, and that if you take the time, you’ll discover many gems − whether they’re things to do or people to meet.

W
ith a family tree dating back to 1692, Lanzerac is one of the oldest estates in the Stellenbosch winelands, its long history encompassing grand English dames, a pioneering planting of Pinotage, and the deft touch of legendary Cape hotelier David Rawdon. Honouring this history while reimagining an iconic Cape estate, was no easy task, but when the revamped Lanzerac Hotel opened to the public on 1 July, it showcased a fantastic new look and feel. While the guest rooms were largely undamaged, the fire that gutted the property on 28 May last year, provided an opportunity to reimagine the public areas of the hotel that had been razed to the ground. That transformation is most obvious in the new reception and lobby areas where heritage furniture, wide, stone hearths and dramatic rafters of handcrafted spruce create a grand entrance to the property. To one side, the ever-popular Taphuis Bar has been entirely rebuilt, faithful to its original atmosphere, but with a few subtle improvements. It’s a little longer, the ceilings slightly higher and yet it retains the warm atmosphere of the past. Look carefully for the
Firstly, there was our charming accommodation The Kite House, set in the tranquil Mira Development, with a generous stoep that overlooks a beautifully landscaped garden, a midnight-blue swimming pool and the changing hues of mountains and hills in the distance. With the call of birdsong in our ears, this was the perfect place to sit with a sundowner in hand, as we lit up the braai, chatted about life, and watched the children doing cartwheels on the lawn. The house sleeps six and is supremely comfortable and cosy, with its roaring fireplace and every amenity you can think of, including free Wi-Fi. Carefully-considered decor includes a gorgeous wrought-iron front door, pale-green window shutters that you fling open onto rose bushes dripping with white blooms, burn marks left, purposefully, on the bookshelves and old cash register. “In refurbishing, we didn’t want to erase the DNA, the story of the building,” explains project coordinator Con van der Colff. That DNA is firmly on display in the room next door, where exposed walls reveal the original clay bricks used when the room was built, as a winery and distillery, in 1710. The dramatic space will become the hotel’s finedining restaurant early next year. For now, though, guests and hungry locals dine in the impressive new Manor Kitchen, where glass walls and roof enclose what was once the hotel courtyard. Here executive chef Stephen Fraser whips up an impressive menu of stylish country cuisine, paired with the excellent estate wines from winemaker Wynand Lategan. Pick of the bunch is the superb Heritage range, including a wonderfully wooded Mrs English Chardonnay, and the premium Pionier Pinotage. Whether you come for dinner, stay the night, or pop in for a light bite at the charming Taphuis, the revamped Lanzerac Hotel should be top of your Winelands wish list this winter.
and sumptuous linen that makes for a wonderful night’s sleep. From the house, the high street is a short walk away, with much to keep you entertained. Closet Confidante is a new clothing store selling unique knitwear and jewellery, adjacent to a new restaurant called Open Kitchen. There are various art galleries and a Saturday morning market, which is pet friendly and hosts live music. Temenos Retreat has beautiful gardens and meditation areas, plus two libraries, a lovely restaurant and a poetry room. Speaking of poetry, McGregor plays host to an annual poetry festival, being held this year from 24 to 26 August, which seems a good excuse as any to visit this part of the world. If wine is more your thing, then McGregor has plenty to offer. We paid a visit to Lord’s Wines, which I highly recommend. This family-run winery makes award-winning Pinot Noir and MCC, and during our wine tasting and tour of the cellar, we learned many fascinating facts, plus enjoyed a delicious local cheese platter. Peace, poetry or Pinot Noir – McGregor certainly has something for everyone.

eads Dog Grooming provides a small, personal dog-grooming service for the dog population of Sunningdale. Owner Chesny Garcia tells us about starting her new business at the innovative Leadville Dog Park. Q: How did your business start? A: I used to live in Joburg and made rehabilitation products for dogs. When I moved to Cape Town, I worked in a pet shop, and then this opportunity came up to open a dog parlour next door. I’ve always loved working with animals, but this was a new thing for me, so I went on a dog-grooming course to learn everything and I employ an experienced dog groomer. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: It was a coincidence. I have a Yorkie and was looking for an off-the-lead park for him, as on the beach the wind blows sand in his eyes. It’s a
fairly rare concept in South Africa but I found this dedicated dog park here in Sunningdale started by Garden Cities. I saw potential in the area. Sunningdale is growing fast with new houses being built and new residents with pets, and it didn’t yet have a grooming parlour. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I was working in the pet shop next door. The space became available and it seemed to be the perfect opportunity to start my own business. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: At the start, they weren’t really ideal, but I saw the potential. It’s a small space which has steered us to offering a small personal service to dogs and their owners. Some grooming parlours are big and almost industrial. We are very hands-on, making sure the dogs feel that they are in a safe environment and working at their comfort level, and owners can stay with their pets if they like. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: The pet shop, a dog-friendly cafe and a behaviourist, all under the same roof within the dog park. Table Bay Mall is also close by.
Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: It’s growing every month. Conservatively 25 to 35 people a week. Our business is bringing more people to the park, and all the businesses here feed off each other. People will come to the grooming parlour and have a drink at the cafe while they wait, or pick something up at the pet shop. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: It’s early days yet. We want to add on a collection service later. In a few years, we may think about opening another shop. But I want to keep the personal connection we’ve established, knowing owners and pets by name. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have a website and we post special offers to our Facebook page (@leadsdoggrooming). Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Our full wash, groom, cut and nails service. Our clients also like that we use cruelty-free, vegan products named Hownd, a good-quality British brand.

utting a smile on viewers’ faces early on weekday mornings on the Expresso Breakfast Show and keeping listeners company on their drive home and Saturday afternoons on KFM, Zoe Brown is a native Capetonian who spent her childhood here before moving to Durban in her teens. It was while studying at Stellenbosch University that she fell in love with radio. This brought her to Cape Town and KFM in 2014, first reporting on traffic, now on The Flash Drive with Carl Wastie and hosting her own show on Saturday afternoons from 2pm until 6pm. In 2015, she won the televised Presenter Search on 3 and became an SABC3
presenter on the Expresso Breakfast Show. Somehow, she still finds time to be an ambassador for The Red Cross Children’s Hospital, the WWF and The Sunflower Fund, and makes the most of her new neighbourhood, Tamboerskloof, where she’s been living for the last year.
Home sweet home Zoe enjoys how central Tamboerskloof is, while still feeling like a peaceful suburb. “It’s an area I’ve always liked,” she says. “I work crazy hours
and wanted to live as close to town as possible without having to break the bank. I stayed in Sea Point for a brief period before moving here but now I’ve settled down in Tamboerskloof.” Some of the attractions of this quaint suburb on the upper slopes of the City Bowl are the Victorian houses and, of course, the incredible views. “It was pure coincidence that I found this place when I did. It’s spacious, has high ceilings and beautiful wooden floors, with a balcony that shows off the beautiful city and Table Mountain.” Her balcony is the perfect place to have friends over for sundowners and soak up the ever-changing views.

Social hotspot Kloof Street is close by and a favourite meeting place. “I love the little restaurants in Kloof Street. I try to hop around and not always go to the same place, but some of my favourites are Da Vinci’s, Asoka and Saigon.” Kloof Street is within easy walking distance but with the steep incline going home, especially after shopping for groceries at the Lifestyle Centre on Kloof, Zoe will take an Uber back. This also saves on the difficulty of parking around Kloof Street which can be a nightmare, she says. “For other shopping, I’m so central that it’s only a quick hop to the Southern Suburbs for Cavendish, north to Canal Walk, or down to the V&A Waterfront.”
A favourite open-air spot is De Waal Park in neighbouring Oranjezicht that locals love and which is slightly off the tourist track. “It’s great all year round for taking a stroll or having a picnic,” Zoe says. “During the summer they do the free Concerts in the Park with a great line-up.” A hidden gem that Zoe loves is The Blue Cafe in Tamboerskloof. “It’s great to enjoy breakfast or coffee on the sidewalk. And then there’s Beleza, a Portuguese and Italian-inspired restaurant on a corner, which is a perfect spot to watch the world go by.” Another advantage of living in Tamboerskloof is that it’s so close to the mountain. “I love going just up the road for a hike around Lion’s Head or the Table Mountain area. There are some wonderful walking paths and routes.”
Perfect Sunday Zoe makes the most of how central Tamboerskloof is to soak up the city vibe on her free Sundays. She suggests, “Start your Sunday morning with breakfast at Liquorice and Lime and then go for a morning stroll around Lion’s Head. It’s about a 50-minute walk, and you get to enjoy a beautiful 360-degree view of the Mother City.”
