rom its eye-catching labels to an ever-growing collection of inventive brews, Devil’s Peak Brewing Company has long set the bar for quality craft beer in Cape Town. Now, with a new brewery up and running and a fast-growing range of Explorer Series beer on offer, Devil’s Peak is busier than ever before.

“We’ve always been pioneers and like to push the boundaries,” says JC Steyn, head brewer, Devil’s Peak Brewing Company. “We launched our first beer into the market officially in March 2012. Since then, we’ve grown at almost 100 percent year on year.” While Devil’s Peak has long been brewing in its charming Salt River Taproom, this year saw the brewery take up residence in a custombuilt new facility in Epping. “Along with our expansion, we’ve also created three unique brewing streams: one for our core range of beers, one for the Explorer beers as well as a dedicated area to increase our barrel and sour beer programme, which is totally separated from the rest of the facility.” The Explorer Series is well worth looking out for, with new limited edition beers (sometimes two) released each month. flying off the shelves include the Dead Reckoning IPA, Cut and Run Pale Ale and Capenhagen: a New England India Pale Ale brewed in collaboration with Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, founder and owner of acclaimed Danish brewery, Mikkeller. “Brewers are all about sharing information, techniques and methods. There’s no better way to express this than doing a collab with a well-respected brewery like Mikkeller. It’s all part of the exploration,” says JC. “For me, the experimentation is crucial. It’s vital if you want to learn and develop your brewing knowledge.” While the hard graft has moved to the new brewery in Epping, which now welcomes visitors to its tasting facility, JC says the ever-popular Devil’s Peak Taproom in Salt River isn’t going anywhere. “In fact, it’s just undergone a renovation!” That’s good news for beer lovers who can still kick back and discover JC’s brave new world of craft brews. Fresh as a Lily Mouille Point’s new eatery exudes laid-back style and fresh flavour WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: KIT HEATHCOCK & SUPPLIED

A

t first sight, Lily’s is all about stylish glitz; the beautiful brass-topped tables, cut glass tumblers and comfortable chairs encouraging long, lazy lunches contemplating the ocean view, and sliding glass doors extending the space to the outside cafe tables for summer. But once you’re inside the Kove Collection’s newest addition, it’s easy to see why Mouille Point locals have quickly adopted it as their everyday eatery for everything from breakfasts and coffee meetups, to sundowners and dinner.

It’s buzzing with a friendly, welcoming vibe and even on a Tuesday at lunchtime, all tables are taken and fill up as soon as they’re vacated. “Lily’s is a restaurant for the local community,” says manager, CK. “The people around here tend to be healthconscious – running, exercising, going to the gym. They can stop here for a freshly squeezed juice after their daily run along the promenade and know that everything here is made from scratch with fresh ingredients.” Don’t be deceived by the elegance into expecting delicate but unsatisfying bites. Plates are generously heaped, and you have to be hungry to work your way through three courses. Our grilled calamari was succulent and tender, served on potato purée with basil cream and chopped tomatoes – a substantial starter. The beets turned out to be slender slices of pickled beetroot sandwiching generous dollops of creamy goat’s cheese with balsamic reduction and pine nuts. The presentation is unfussy but pretty, with microgreens and borage flowers adding colour and freshness. Reading through the quirky menu, my husband chose the Holy Cow, for his main: a good chunk of tender fillet steak on mash with mushrooms and onion quarters. My favourite was the sesame crusted tuna on sticky coconut rice with wasabi aioli, coleslaw and edamame – fresh, light and contemporary. There are salads, sandwiches and burgers, covering pretty much any dietary preferences. The dessert menu throws caution to the wind with three options featuring chocolate. Death By Chocolate sounded fabulous, but I was intrigued by the Please Sir can I have S’mores, a sultry chocolate mousse with peanut butter cookie crumble and roasted marshmallow ice cream. All that richness was nicely balanced by intensely fruity dehydrated raspberry dust decorating the serving plate – elegant and satisfying, in Lily’s signature style.

eerhouse on Long has been a haven for South African beer lovers since it opened in Long Street in 2013. With its 25 taps and “99 Bottles” of local and international beers, what beer lover wouldn’t be impressed? So it’s only natural that the passion for beer and food would be elevated to new heights with the #BrewFood Revolution menu. “Brew Food was the result of our desire to create a unique food identity for Beerhouse, which would combine beer and food in a way never done before while at the same time celebrating our shared South African heritage,” says Murray Slater, coowner and group operations manager, Beerhouse, on the new concept.

And who better to work with on this truly South African menu than The Ultimate Braai Master winner and Laat Die Potte Prut presenter, Piet Marais? “Piet shared our vision and brought in his own unique outdoor-fire cooking and smoking techniques,” says Murray. So what does this mean? Well, you can expect inventive (and beer-focused) dishes like the beer-fermented flatbread topped with chickpeas, feta and smoked aubergine; beerchos (beer-inspired nachos); the beer-batter (24-hour yeast and beer-fermented batter) fish tacos (a favourite of mine); smoked beer-brined brisket and chicken wings; brew-pickles (beer-brined vegetables); as well as

some interesting sauces on the side, such as Rémoulade (brew-pickles and Beeracha relish) and Brew-BQ Sauce (beer-based braai sauce). “We use beer as an ingredient in almost every dish. Beer is added to a traditional brioche then fermented for 24hrs before baking. This is used as the base for all our burgers and sandwiches. We created what we call beer cheese by emulsifying beer and cheese with an emulsifying salt that we use as a topping. This has been especially popular. Beer is used in our brines that we brine meat in for our BBQ before smoking, and is also added to our Brew-BQ Sauce. Lastly, we use beer in fermentation by combining it with brine and then naturally fermenting chillies for two weeks to create our signature Beeracha,” says Piet. Every menu needs something sweet, and the #BrewFood Revolution menu offers the Beerhouse Beer Float, made with milk stout, chocolate ganache, salted caramel and bourbon ice cream, whipped cream, cherries and marshmallows. This is a culinary journey like no other – one that no lover of beer and food should miss. And this is just the start. “Our first menu produced over 10 unique uses for beer and food. We will build on this and with the almost limitless varieties of beer, we have a lot to work with,” says Murray.

So much to Si! An inviting new eatery brings delicious artisan fare to the V&A Waterfront Silo District

N

ow that the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is open, joining a welcoming circle of cafes and restaurants that are bringing the surrounding area to life, the Silo District is really starting to hum. When you step into newly opened Si Cantina Sociale (Silo 5A1, V&A Waterfront) you immediately feel the Silo District vibe connecting the CBD and the V&A Waterfront, work and leisure, locals and tourists.

butter pastries and the jams that accompany them at breakfast. Head chef, Natale Schotti, is in her element at Si and has free rein to explore her love for quality local ingredients. “Everything is as farm-to-table as we can make it: organic eggs, organic meat if possible, always free-range, and only fresh, sustainable fish,” she says. She’s fiercely proud of her team who have mastered the various skills demanded by so much artisanal production.

Si describes itself as a “cantina sociale”, a casual meeting place where you can socialise with food and drink. It’s a community focal point where you can enjoy breakfast, hang out with friends after work, have a business lunch, or do some work over coffee. With quality food and a welcoming atmosphere, Si is set to become a social hub for the growing local community living and working in the area.

The decor is a play of contrasts. Interior designer Janine de NeuillyRice worked with the high-ceilinged industrial space created by architect Charl Marais, softening the hard edges with warm wood chairs and floors, and contrasting raw wood tables with luxurious touches of velvetupholstered chairs and moss-green leather booths. The urban view is tamed by nature in the form of hanging gardens from neighbour, Opus. A feisty street art collaborative effort by Cape Town artists Buffy and Oda Tungodden on the end wall blends masculine and feminine, nature and city. At night,

Everything at Si is made in-house, from the creamy burrata mozzarella lavished on slow-fermented flatbreads, the sausages and charcuterie, to the delicate

the light softens, a projector plays moving images over the mural and Si becomes an inviting refuge from the industrial cityscape outside. The 10-seater round table in the space is a perfect place for a group of friends to gather and share dishes such as the beef tartare, a generous plate of hand-cut sirloin steak (bound with grated cured egg yolk for a beautiful rich texture and flavour), and pork belly embraced by apples and Calvados, or the quirky baby octopus with black mayonnaise. And it’s good to find a chic industrial space where the acoustics have been considered; you can chat easily with your dining partner without having to shout, and the background music remains in the background. Two wood fires burn in the open kitchen: one in the furnace-like brick oven, where flatbreads are deftly cooked (they are light, crisp and create a robust and satisfying meal when they’re smothered with a hearty topping of piquant Napolitano sauce and meatballs made from Natale’s secret recipe, handed down from her grandfather). The other fire is for the state-of-the-art wood grill, a braai master’s dream, which ratchets up and down to cook rib-eye and sirloin steaks, fish and more at the ideal temperature, searing the meat perfectly to seal in the juices. “Much of the menu is centred on the fire – the fish charred and the steaks simply but perfectly grilled with fresh herbs and an array of butters,” says Natale. “There’s definitely a Mediterranean influence, but again a little bit of North Africa. We’re bringing a lot of chillies and warm spices in; we’re playing with the hot and the cool. I want people to taste different things,” says Natale.

EXPERIENCE IT FOR YOURSELF: Si Cantina Sociale 087 470 0124 bookings@si-cantinasociale.co.za info@si-cantinasociale.co.za si-cantinasociale.com

Her vision is for an interactive open kitchen where in the mornings you might see home-made burrata being pulled, sausages being made or hanging to smoke over the wood fire, and slowfermented sourdough made into a variety of flatbreads and cooked in the wood oven in front of you. The idea is also to showcase local brands. The bar offers Devil’s Peak and Jack Black craft beer as well as Guinness on tap, the wine list features smaller producers such as Tulbagh and Robertson wineries, and you can enjoy excellent coffee from local roasters, Tribe Coffee. There’s plenty on offer for the healthconscious, vegetarian or vegan too, from superfood breakfast bowls, like the acai and raw chocolate or the matcha oats, to fresh-pressed juices with power ingredients like turmeric and ginger. Natale’s philosophy is to make food that’s healthy and delicious. Her multigrain bread doughs are slowfermented for between 48 and 72 hours (there are also gluten-free versions) and her fermented yoghurt is delicious and easy to digest. “It’s ethically sourced, approachable, beautiful food. I want people to have a really good, authentic, honest meal,” says Natale. Si is intimately connected with its neighbourhood. Just as we can expect more creativity to unfold in this vibey district over summer, there’s a whole lot more to look forward to from chef Natale and her team, including exciting weekly specials, an evolving menu and a generous helping of home-cooked flavour.

Easy solutions for green living Whether you have an existing home or are building one, there are many architectural and design features that can help you go green WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGES: ISTOCK

F

abio Venturi, director, Terramanzi Group, works as a sustainable design consultant and believes that going green starts at home. He presents homeowners with an opportunity to be eco-conscious and save money. “There are over 50 shades of green, so step back, take a deep breath and start with good, rational design – ideally aligned with a tested, best practice standard for homes, which here is the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (Edge) rating system, managed by the Green Building Council of South Africa,” says Fabio.

• A light-coloured roof and external walls will reflect heat and keep the home cool inside. • External shading limits the amount of heat coming into the home and helps keep the interior cool. • Roof insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce the amount of energy needed to heat up or cool a building. In cold or temperate climates/seasons, insulate the home thoroughly before installing the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems.

Homes following Edge principles are designed to use at least 20% less water, electricity and embodied energy, he says, and there are many things to consider when retrofitting an existing home or building a new one. Aside from improving behavioural habits (like switching off lights), it’s possible to have an eco-friendly home through clever design and other technical features.

• About 60% of energy used by a washing machine goes towards water heating, so models that use less water use less energy. • CFL, LED, or T5 bulbs reduce a building’s energy consumption. These bulbs last longer than incandescent bulbs, so maintenance costs are also reduced. • Motion sensor lights also reduce energy consumption.

Energy

• Windows are one of the biggest conduits for heat loss (in winter) and heat gain (in summer). Only 20% of your wall area should be windows. • If you enjoy views and window space, install Low-E glass. This helps retain heat in winter and reduce heat gain in warmer seasons/climates.

Water

• Low-flow showerheads reduce the amount of water used. • A dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes in the sink, and also saves time and money. • Dual-flush toilets reduce the amount of water used from around 13L in a single flush to 6L and 3L respectively. • Install rainwater harvesting systems and pipe the water to your washing machine, dishwasher and even shower and bath areas. Grey water also works, but requires diligent maintenance to contain odours.

My business neighbourhood Have your cake and eat it at Tessa’s Bakery in Milnerton WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED

C

olourful, luscious cakes that are the sweet stuff of fantasy have always been Tessa Dasopatis’s speciality. Now the new Tessa’s Bakery in Milnerton also has a coffee shop where you can indulge to your heart’s content. Tessa tells us about the new store. Q: How did your business start? A: The business started in my home kitchen. I had been baking from home for more than 20 years, but in 2013 it just became too busy. We needed more space and decided to take a leap of faith and open our first store in Montague Gardens. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: We didn’t want to stray too far away from our previous location in Montague Gardens. We looked at a lot of other places, but the property in Milpark, which at the time was just an empty shell and

a blank canvas, was always the one we returned to. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We placed a survey on our Facebook page asking our customers where they would like us to move to, and an agent in the area contacted us. He showed us the Milpark premises which he believed would be a perfect fit. When we walked into Milpark, we fell in love. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Compared to our previous location, the premises are much more accessible for our customers. They’re in a residential area, with schools in the vicinity; they give us a bigger production space and allow for an amazing retail space for customers to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: View Church and Akeso Clinic. There are amazing plans to revive the old historical building of Milpark, which will soon boast a deli and ice cream parlour. Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Milpark Centre is good value for money, only a fraction more expensive than units we were looking at in Montague Gardens, and it offered us a retail element Montague Gardens could not.

Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: Our foot traffic has definitely increased since we moved here. Between 28 August and 4 September we had 640 sales, but probably double the amount of people walking through our doors. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Our main focus now is our new store. We get asked when the next store will pop up, but right now we’re focusing on providing quality cakes, excellent service and a fun and enjoyable experience to each customer. We’ve recently started hosting decorating classes here too. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: A ll standard orders can be placed online and paid for via our PayFast portal, or you can choose to pay in store. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our red velvet cheesecake, but cupcakes are also very popular; as fast as we fill up our trays, they get sold.

Disaster management Assess your insurance policy to ensure your home could be replaced after a catastrophe WORDS: CANDICE BOTHA

IMAGE: ISTOCK

T

he devastating fires in Knysna earlier this year left many South Africans wondering whether they would be able to recover if a disaster destroyed their home. It’s essential to ensure that you have sufficient coverage in terms of building insurance to rebuild your home. This should include labour and materials but also paying for any additional costs such as an architect, removal of rubble and coverage for the contents of your home. “Building insurance covers structures fixed to the ground including, pools, driveways, walls and fences, while ‘contents’ is considered to be anything movable on the premises,” says Jerome Schofield, CEO, Jerome Schofield insurance brokers. “These terms are clearly defined in every policy booklet and it’s important to go through them carefully.” If you have a bond, you’ll have building insurance as part of your agreement with the bank. “This is sufficient for the bank’s interest and will cover major catastrophes,” says Schofield, “but there are little extras or extensions that a bank won’t include in the policy

that a broker would. It’s important to ask your broker if extensions like ‘accidental damage’ and ‘power surge’ are included. Everyone has different needs. However, it’s advisable to have a proper needs analysis conducted by a broker who is reputable, experienced and, most importantly, honest. I firmly believe that special care should be taken when insuring against risks of a catastrophic nature.” The coverage your building insurance includes varies from area to area but lightning damage, geyser damage, water damage to laminated and wooden flooring is usually included. Working out whether you have sufficient cover is essential and Schofield recommends consulting a professional appraiser. “Basically, a simple formula to work out your coverage is the size of the house in square metres multiplied by the cost per metre; then you’ve got to add in items like pools and fences. The cost per metre depends on the location and nature of the buildings, which varies for everyone, so getting expert advice is very worthwhile.”

Vredehoek Radio talk show host, Renaldo Schwarp, tells us about his neighbourhood WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: EBEN PHOTOGRAPHY, NATASHA LASSEN & ANTON SCHOLTZ

Vredehoek is stunning and extremely well located. It offers the best of both worlds, close to work and town, with picturesque hiking trails and lots of cute coffee shops.

ABOUT RENALDO SCHWARP: After a doing a BA in drama at Stellenbosch University and a stint on campus radio, Renaldo did an internship at Netwerk24, where he created online and video content for Media24. He then became the official ambassador of WeCan24, a digital school network. This led to hosting his own late-night show on Cape Talk and producing and presenting an Afrikaans entertainment news show at VIA TV.

RENALDO SCHWARP

DINE OUT: • Sidewalk Cafe: for sundowners and a bite to eat • Red Sofa Cafe: for brunch and coffee • The Woodlands Eatery: for cosy get-togethers over delicious food • Deer Park Cafe: for great breakfasts and lunches • Carlyles on Derry: for delicious pizzas and a pub vibe • Con Brio Bistro: for small plates, pizzas and more

THINGS TO DO: • Have a picnic with friends in Deer Park. • Enjoy the natural surroundings at Vredehoek Quarry on foot or on a mountain bike. • Enjoy pub grub and watch sport at Perseverance Tavern. • Head to the Gardens Centre for boutiques and specialist food stores. • Hike the trails around Devil’s Peak.

DEER PARK CAFE

H

osting a late-night radio show on Cape Talk encouraged Renaldo Schwarp to make the move to the Mother City from Stellenbosch, where he lived after studying there for his BA in Drama. “I’d fallen in love with the idea of staying in the Cape Town CBD,” he says. “I wanted a spot that was close enough to the studio and set, but also a place where I could wind down – a place I could make my own. Vredehoek satisfied both of these requirements. I found a lovely spacious apartment with two of my closest friends from campus radio, who also work in commercial radio now, and we decided the moment we viewed the apartment that it was exactly what we were looking for.” When asked what he loves most about Vredehoek, he says the view is at the top of the list. “It’s absolutely breathtaking! I have majestic Table Mountain to one side and the vibrant City Bowl on the other. My apartment is literally at the foot of Table Mountain, with astounding views, so breakfast with friends in our sunroom is always a treat. The area is extremely central, very close to work and town, but it also offers a

haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. The fact that it’s also on a MyCiTi bus route was a bonus.” There’s lots to enjoy about Vredehoek on the weekends too. “Hosting a late-night radio show has made me somewhat of a nocturnal creature,” says Renaldo. “So my ideal weekend off would probably start with sleeping in a bit later than usual, waking up to a late brunch with friends at one of the many coffee shops, and then hiking up Table Mountain. Or packing a picnic basket, finding a spot overlooking Cape Town and just enjoying the view with good company. Perhaps then it would be time for a cocktail and light early dinner at Sidewalk Cafe, and then I’d hit the town – seeing as it’s so close to Vredehoek.” Another thing that defines Vredehoek for Renaldo is the people. “I have come to love the friendliness of the people here. They’re always ready with a big smile and a warm ‘hello’. Vredehoek is becoming more attractive for young working adults to stay, so I often bump into someone I studied with back in Stellenbosch who also stays here. One really does fall more in love with this area every day.”
