Saving SA’s old vines s Andre Morgenthal and viticulturist Jaco Engelbrecht criss-cross the Western Cape, 35 is the magic number. For after 35 years in the ground a vineyard in South Africa qualifies as an “old vine”, and the pair now driving the Old Vine Project (OVP) have made it their mission to keep South Africa’s heritage vines in the ground.
to rip out older vineyards to replant with younger, more vigorous vines.
The OVP was started by respected viticulturist Rosa Kruger in 2003 and has since gone on to catalogue more than 1,000 vineyard blocks covering 2,600ha of land. “Sitting there for decades the vine can’t run away, so it has to just endure the weather, the temperatures and the soil,” says Andre. “There’s a texture in the wine that’s totally different to other wines.”
Along with cataloguing the Cape’s old vineyards, Andre and Rosa hope to keep those vines in the ground by matching low-yield, high-quality vineyards with winemakers looking to produce premium wines.
The problem, though, comes down to simple economics. After 20-odd years, vines produce fewer grapes and so farmers earn less per hectare. On tight margins, they’re often tempted
“One of the things we need to focus on is educating winemakers on just how many old vineyards there are in South Africa; many have the impression that all the old vineyards have been sold, or are already claimed,” says Jaco. Luckily there’s growing recognition of what old vines bring to the wine

“The issue with old vines is that, like an old man, they can’t work as hard as a young vine,” says Eben Sadie, who produces his acclaimed Old Vine Series from vineyards across the Cape. “They just can’t yield the same crop as a young vine. We’re losing a lot of our heritage at this stage.”

Anna, Elsa and Olaf. Disney on Ice will sweep you away on a magic carpet ride that takes you from Africa to Arendelle and even under the sea to the East Australian Current. Featuring themes of friendship, family, love, fun and happiness the icy spectacle has all the ingredients to warm your heart. Tony Feldman, director, Showtime Management, shares his thoughts on the upcoming extravaganza. “Going into its sixth consecutive year, Disney on Ice has become the ultimate family show during the winter school holidays. Every year brings a new show to South Africa and this year The Wonderful World of Disney on Ice will once again deliver the Disney magic and the time-honoured characters from a variety of Disney classics including The Lion King, Frozen, Finding Dory and much, much more. Kids, parents and grandparents will be lost in a world of enchanting music, magnificent sets and costumes, loveable characters and incredible skating. And for the first time we welcome Durban to the Disney On Ice family.” With ever-evolving sets and characters who put on a wonderful display of ice skating skills, The Wonderful World of Disney on Ice has remained popular. The set, which weighs 6 tonnes, takes 10 to 14 hours to set up and uses 8km of cables. The production features 300 costumes and 200,000 Swarovski crystals and promises to be a visual and aural masterpiece. The Wonderful World of Disney On Ice will run from 19 to 23 July at Grand West Grand Arena. Tickets are on sale at Computicket (goo. gl/aBw48A). Don’t miss out!
The spice girl of Bloubergstrand Prim Reddy is spicing things up at The Indian Chapter restaurant this winter WORDS & IMAGES: KIT HEATHCOCK
T
he Indian Chapter started as the result of a bet. After a successful career as a TV and radio presenter, and a short spell in the corporate world, Prim Reddy moved to Bloubergstrand. She and her husband bought a house in a neighbourhood with an Indian restaurant that was about to close down. When he bet her that she wouldn’t be able to run a restaurant, she made an offer on the restaurant the next day, unable to resist a challenge. “It’s been an amazing journey; I’m still learning,” says Prim. “The most important thing is that we treat guests the way that I would like to be treated in a restaurant. I went through all of the dishes on the menu; I wanted it to have an edge – the comfort of eating your grandmother’s chicken broth. And that’s what we’ve managed to create.” It truly is a traditional neighbourhood Indian restaurant, unpretentious, welcoming and warm, with a menu of North Indian dishes and a sprinkling of South Indian flavour. The original restaurant became so busy that a year later Prim added Chapter Two, a second private dining room-style space around
the corner, with the same menu and kitchen and a roaring log fire in winter. The restaurant was full when we visited on a winter Tuesday night. We started with beautifully tender tandoori chicken; the restaurant makes its own yoghurt for the marinade and a special spice mix, deep orange with Kashmiri chilli. The samosas are Punjabi style, cooked in the tandoor oven, and the substantial onion bhajis are perfect for the cold winter days. Each dish is cooked individually as it’s ordered and there’s something for every palate: from mild, creamy kormas through to the hottest curries spiced with bird’s eye chillies for the chilli lovers. We were wowed by the chicken madras, which was hot, but not blazingly so, and fragrant with coconut and mustard seeds. The lamb kadhai has the freshness of green pepper and tomato and a thick sauce with excellent-quality meat. The vegetable makhni was pure comfort food, earthy and rich with cream. All meals were accompanied by a really good garlic naan bread.

The green light Use these tips to help you live an environmentally friendly home life. Start small and it will soon become second nature. WORDS: ANNE SCHUAFFER
M
ore than anything, being environmentally friendly makes sense economically. It’s a great idea to call in a professional to run an energy audit on your home, but you can also start small.
IMAGE: ISTOCK
One way to jump start a smarter home life is to switch off, turn off, buy less and reuse more. Ask yourself: “Do I need this? Could I borrow or hire it?” Essentially, be mindful of how you live. If you have children, it’s vital that they learn how to function in a world with finite resources, but you may find that they’re good teachers too. Just as we learned about the horrors of litter, they’re learning about sustainability. Where to start? Don’t think that “it’s not worth the saving” – it is and, of course, many tiny savings add up to make a big difference.
Reduce your electricity and water usage simply by being more aware:
• Lights: turn off the lights when you leave a room; use outdoor (and even some indoor) motionsensor lights; replace all bulbs (and, over time, fittings)
with quality, long-lasting compact fluorescent lights. • Indoor water: only shower for a few minutes; install low-flow shower heads; only use the washing machine and dishwasher with a full load; wash clothes in cold water whenever possible – as much as 85% of the energy used goes to heating the water; use the basin plug – don’t leave the tap running; reduce the number of times you flush the toilet. • Outdoor water: cover the pool to prevent evaporation; recycle your grey water for use in the garden – this can be as simple as using a container in the shower to collect water or redirecting water from your shower or basin into a holding tank or your garden. • Heating/cooling: change your geyser, air-conditioning and heating to a lower setting. If you do it over time, you won’t notice the difference. • Electricity: unplug chargers and appliances when they’re not being used; switch off your computer overnight. • Appliances: replace appliances with energy-rated alternatives. • General: open curtains/ blinds to let in sunlight and minimise use of artificial light.
MORE GREEN TIPS: • Skip the bottled water: install a water filter and use a glass, aluminium or reusable water bottle. • Shop at a local market: the fruit, vegetables, dairy and eggs will usually be less expensive, often organically grown (even if it doesn’t shout about it on the label), will have travelled a shorter distance to get to you (less fuel equals less pollution) and you’ll be supporting a local business. • Buy in bulk: you’ll shop less often, save money and use fewer containers. • Cleaning products: this is often a sizable chunk of your household spending. If you have the time, make your own – if not, buy environmentally friendly options. • Rainwater/grey water: tanks such as the varying sizes and creative shapes/colours available from, say, JoJo, make this a worthwhile investment when the rains come. • Herb garden – plant it. It’s easy, it’s cheap and it’s wonderful!

Green Point TV chef and cookbook author, Zola Nene, tells us about her neighbourhood WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

Z
I love Green Point because it's close to town and all the bustling food spots in Bree Street and also Sea Point. I like to be close to where there's a food buzz; it helps me stay in the loop. ZOLA NENE
ola Nene is a well-known personality on SABC3’s Expresso breakfast show, which means she has to get to work early in the morning. She was primarily looking for convenience when choosing a new home three years ago and found exactly that in a cottage high on the slopes of Signal Hill in Green Point.
open all my windows and I can hear the music very clearly. The acoustics carry everything uphill, so I can enjoy the concert in my backyard. But, of course, if there’s a football match I can also hear the vuvuzelas and the screaming. I’m high up the hill and have my own garage, so parking on concert days is not an issue for me.
“I chose this area because it's close to work, seven minutes’ drive away to be exact,” says Zola. “Traffic isn’t a problem at the time I go to work, but even in peak traffic it only takes eight minutes. I love Green Point because it feels very central – it's close to town and all the bustling food spots in Bree Street. Also, Sea Point is starting to sprout some cool new foodie gems. I like to be close to where there's a food buzz; it helps me stay in the loop.
“It’s a tricky part of Cape Town to define,” says Zola. “Green Point is more of a residential area, flanked by two really cool, buzzing areas, De Waterkant and Sea Point, which makes us feel like we’re also in the cool zone!”
ABOUT ZOLA NENE: Zola Nene, resident chef on the Expresso breakfast show on SABC3, studied at the Institute of Culinary Arts in Stellenbosch. As well as being a TV chef she works as a food stylist, MC and food judge. She is also the author of a cookbook, Simply Delicious, which won a Best (English) TV Chef Book award in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2017. zolanene.com
“El Burro is my favourite restaurant in Green Point. The other day I discovered The Mess restaurant hidden down a side street in De Waterkant – a cool little spot. The Mojo Market in Sea Point is amazing for lunchtime; with so many different food stalls and restaurants there, I’m quite spoilt for choice!” One of her favourite spots on a Saturday is the Oranjezicht City Farm Market in Granger Bay. For everyday food shopping in Green Point there’s a Woolworths Food and her favourite place to buy meat is The Butcher Man. She says the nearby Green Point Urban Park is a great place to visit in summer for picnics with friends who have kids. Being high on Signal Hill, Zola has great views over the Cape Town Stadium. “If there’s a band playing that I like, I can

The apartment Built in 1571 the building blends seamlessly with the cobbled streets and the view of the old bell tower from the top floor. From the uneven, tiled floor, thick walls and stone fire place to the ancient rafters the house brims with history. While the home
has been fitted with modern comforts you only need to close your eyes to feel the spirit of a time long gone breathing through the rooms. Its sigh is in the creak of the rafters, its breath flowing in from the windows, its heart beat felt in the stone walls and floors
The apartment has 3 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms (2 bathrooms en-suite). It is positioned on the second floor of a building which and has the original Provençal floors and ceilings and furnished in the appropriate style
FINANCE: A 10% share which allows you 5 weeks during the year costs only 70,000 euro and approximately 4,000 euro in legal fees. The property is owned in a SCI (Property Owning French entity) and your name will be put on the title deed
