Though some say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, On the Rocks is putting that saying to bed with its new summer menu. On the Rocks chef Charl du Preez and MasterChef South Africa judge Pete Goffe-Wood collaborated on the new menu which stays true to this Cape Town institution while adding something new. “The big difference between the old and new menus would be the focus on fresh ingredients and uncomplicated cooking methods used now to produce vibrant and healthy dishes,” says Charl.
Did you know? Adderley Street was originally completely made of wooden blocks. The blocks were eventually covered with tar, but if you look towards the upper end of the street, you can still see evidence of them.
What's on in Stellenbosch
With the focus predominantly on seafood dishes, it’s easy to see that the view from On the Rocks inspired the menu. For starters, we tucked into the smoked snoek fishcakes with the house tomato and cumin jam, cucumber ribbons and marinated fennel. The fishcakes had a lovely Cape Malay flavour to them and though there was a slight bite, it wasn’t overpowering. Other options

enerations of Capetonians have enjoyed a meal at On the Rocks in Blouberg. Having been around for more than 56 years, it’s easy to see why. “What attracts both locals and international tourists alike are the magnificent views of Table Mountain and Robben Island,” says Annarette Blom, MD, Seascape Collection Group (which owns On the Rocks).
include oysters (served either natural or Japanese-style with cucumber, pickled ginger and soy dressing), West Coast steamed mussels and salt and pepper squid, while the meat-eaters can enjoy cured Klein Karoo ostrich carpaccio and peri-peri chicken livers. I couldn’t resist ordering the line fish for mains (that day it was fresh tuna – a favourite of mine). The seared tuna comes with a new potato salad with fennel. The meal was fresh and light, while still being substantial, and cooked just the way I like it. The rest of the menu features dishes such as Cape Malay seafood curry, polenta-crusted hake, deep-sea prawns and hake fish tacos. Non-seafood dishes include the braised Overberg lamb breast, the pork rack and the aged rib-eye. Vegetarians are also catered for with the butternut rotolo and foraged mushrooms on tagliatelle. The simple and charming menu perfectly reflects Charl’s easy-going personality, with him describing it as “fresh, no fuss. Nothing is complicated and everything is good.” And it’s paying off, with Annarette saying that new and old customers leave the restaurant satisfied and can’t wait to return. “The compliments we’ve received from regulars, who are pretty territorial about On the Rocks, say it all.”

Marrow
Two exciting new single-focus eateries pushing the flavour boundaries WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

Bone broth has many health benefits, but until now it’s hardly been sexy. At Marrow broth bar the hard work is done for you. Nourishing broths are cooked slowly over two days, to extract all the goodness and flavour, and then served in Japanese-street-food style and elegance. Think clear broth poured over a bowl of roast chicken and chorizo for a light lunch, or intense deep-brown broth with red wine and harissa for a festive feel, with thin slices of springbok, apricots and almonds. The vegan white broth has all the comfort of coconut, miso and lemongrass, with roast aubergine, tofu and turnip. The green pescatarian option, dashi broth with kombu, evokes the ocean, with steamed fish and vegetables. Chef Danielle Smith has just added a golden bowl salad of turmeric quinoa with kimchi and roast sweet potato, and she’s developing chilled broth recipes for summer. “Broth is super simple, clean, not fussy and adapts to whatever you’re in the mood for,” she says.
Davy Croquettes
When a food truck settles down and puts down roots you get Davy Croquettes, hidden upstairs above Narona on Buitenkant Street. Perch on a barstool on the balcony overlooking the mountain and feast on the humble croquette elevated to creative heights.
DAVY CROQUETTES
Chef Dave Titley takes inspiration from the Spanish and Dutch styles of croquettes, some with pure meaty oomph, others oozing melted cheese. He slow roasts pork belly for the pork and sage croquettes with sweet mustard and candies his own jalapenos for the jalapeno and feta (all the joy of a chilli popper without the fuss). It’s finger food with full-plate flavour – four croquettes served in a bamboo boat with a home-made dunking sauce. “They are so diverse, you can cook whatever you want as a chef and turn it into a croquette,” says Dave, who continually dreams up new flavour combinations. I loved the peppered pulled pork dunked in chilli onion jam. The simple sour cream was perfect with the rich date, bacon and goat’s cheese croquettes.
Lanzerac looks back to the future A new range of wines from Lanzerac honours the heritage of this historic Stellenbosch estate while pioneering new cultivars WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

L
anzerac Wine Estate, situated at the entrance to the picturesque Jonkershoek valley, traces its heritage back to 1692 and has long claimed its place in South Africa’s winemaking history as the first estate to plant, grow and bottle Pinotage. Now cellarmaster Wynand Lategan is honouring that history and creating some of his own, with the release of a boutique range of wines, the “Keldermeester Versameling”. This “Cellarmaster’s Collection” pays tribute to the heritage of the estate, but also shows plenty of innovation. “With these wines, the focus is very much on experimentation both from a variety and a terroir perspective,” says Wynand. “They are also a vehicle for challenging conventional winemaking methods and serve to prove that a wine estate with so much history and tradition behind it can also be innovative at the same time.”
MARROW
Perhaps the most interesting wine in the range is dubbed Prof and pays tribute to Professor Abraham Perold, who in 1924 created Pinotage by
crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, a grape also known as Hermitage. Prof explores the interplay of these two “parents” with a refined blend of Cinsaut (60%) and Pinot Noir (40%). A similarly interesting bottling is Bergpad: one of the few Pinot Blancs made locally. Pinot Blanc is a whitewine mutation of Pinot Noir and common to both Alsace and Italy. Here Wynand sourced grapes from a single vineyard in the Jonkershoek valley, the vines no doubt overlooking the eponymous bergpad (mountain road) that runs from Stellenbosch into the mountains. Dok is the only red in the range and a nod to rugby supremo Dr Danie Craven, who was a regular visitor at Lanzerac. The single-vineyard Malbec comes from the cool slopes of the Jonkershoek and delivers polished tannins, dark fruit and freshness. While these three wines make up the current release, expect the Keldermeester Versameling to vary from year to year, with new blends and expressions as Wynand discovers new pockets of vineyards across the Western Cape.

Bay Harbour Market A shopping vibe like no other!
S
ince its inception in 2010, Bay Harbour Market has always set out to break the mould – never conforming and always ensuring that the shopper experience is unparalleled. This festive season is no exception. “Over the years, we’ve prided ourselves on the careful curation of our more than 100 traders,” says Sandra Stroebel, GM, Bay Harbour Market. “And it’s not just about the quality and craftsmanship of their products, but also about the variety that the market has to offer, not to mention the personality of the individuals themselves.” From beautifully designed and restored watches and jewellery, to leather goods, clothing and a host of decor items, there’s something for everyone. And with so many traders, it’s a visual feast. “This year, we’ve also added four night markets to our usual weekend times,” says Sandra. “Two nights for Christmas shopping on Wednesday and Thursday, 20 and 21 December, from 5pm–10pm, and then two nights just before New Year’s Eve, on Wednesday and Thursday, 27 and 28 December, again from 5pm–10pm. For those who have not yet visited a usual Friday night market,
it’s not to be missed – fabulous crowds, great live music and an awesome vibe.” Another reason that makes Bay Harbour Market so popular is the Young Saturdays initiative. Introduced to keep kiddies busy while their parents have a gander, the December line-up of entertainment includes Recycling Sculptures by Danielle (23 December) and Pizza Making with The Three Happy Sisters (30 December). Completely free, parents can settle the young ones in, grab a glass of bubbles and simply relax or shop, shop, shop. As usual, the market will be open every weekend: 5pm–9pm on Fridays and 9.30am–4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Adults can look forward to DJ Eben on the decks in the Beach Yard as well as plenty of great local acts on the KWV Sound Stage. To see the full line-up visit bayharbour.co.za.

Elgin may be building a solid reputation for cool-climate wines, but the valley is best known for its picturesque apple and pear orchards. With five craft cider producers making good use of the fruits, it would be a shame not to sample all the ciders while visiting Elgin. elginvalley.co.za
Best beaches and tidal pools Dalebrook, Kalk Bay
An often overlooked Kalk Bay gem, the Dalebrook tidal pool lies just past Danger Bay. To get there, you go through a narrow doorway under the railway tracks, which often makes for stunning photos. It also has an outdoor shower and changing room.
Diaz Beach, Cape Point
Preekstoel, West Coast National Park
Lying in the West Coast National Park, Preekstoel Beach, named after the “preekstoel” rock formation, is known for its beauty and even boasts a shipwreck. Though you can’t braai at the beach, there are braai facilities nearby, so make a day of it!
This secluded beach is a favourite destination among locals and is perfect for a romantic getaway. The walk to the beach may be tricky (you need to be fit to get there), but it’s worth doing to enjoy a picnic with a loved one away from the crowds.

My business neighbourhood Schoon brings artisanal bread and genuine slow food to Somerset West WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED
A
rtisan baker Fritz Schoon put heirloom grains and beautiful slow-fermented breads on the foodie radar at his first bakery and eatery, Schoon de Companje in Stellenbosch. Changing direction, he and his wife Chanelle recently opened a smaller eatery in Somerset West. Fritz tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: Schoon is not a new business; it’s a reinvention based on personal desires, future aspirations and past lessons learnt. Our new business model, since selling the Oude Bank lease agreement in Stellies, revolves around our central production space called Schoon Manufactory (manual factory), where we bake our breads and pastries, with our first Schoon outlet in Somerset West. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: It was actually a no-brainer; there’s a massive demand for higherquality products in Somerset West. Our choice was based on our awareness of our strong Somerset West following.
PROPERTY NEWS
Q: How did you find your premises? A: Even when we weren’t actually looking for a space, we still entertained every invite we got because it refined our understanding of what we were looking for. We saw the Bright Street premises and said, “Yes, we want it.” We usually wait for an invitation and, in so doing, we never force a move. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: I believe you have two options in deciding which premises to rent/buy: to place yourself in an environment where there’s growth and dynamic movement and in which your customer feels comfortable, or to create a whole new destination and start a movement. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: A diverse group of specialists and professionals, plus we’re across the road from Chelsea Village. I hear of exciting concepts being planned for lower down the street. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Still fair – it’s not Cape Town or Stellenbosch yet. Rentals aren’t a problem for our model as we focus on smaller retail spaces and a smaller team in which we can invest more. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: Currently, about 90 to 110 covers a day, mostly regulars – old and new.
9
Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: A bsolutely. We’re creative beings. We were limited by our large space in Stellenbosch, not making progress in the areas we desired, because we were continuously fixing problems. So we’ve created a central kitchen in which we purely focus on the quality of production and development of products. We’ll create more outlets, like Somerset West, to showcase this journey. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We do. Technology is not the anti-artisan. We currently use an ordering app through the awesome team at Getadvance.net. They’re also developing an app for us which will allow customers to order, get baking lessons and see product availability. Like everything we do, it will be very personal. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: We sell wild amounts of our scrambled eggs on toast and flat whites, but I love the items that barely sell which we put on the menu for the adventurous spirit. Food is a journey which should be explored continuously.

2018 property trends Estates, drones and retirement homes will have their moments next year WORDS: CANDICE BOTHA IMAGES: ISTOCK
N
ext year is predicted to be a buyers’ market. “The market is going to be affected by business and consumer confidence levels, and we expect these to differ regionally and from area to area,” says Berry Everitt, CEO, Chas Everitt International Property Group. He says there’ll be challenges related to the country’s current political and financial difficulties, but, overall, it will be a buyers’ market – and buying is what the smart investors and consumers will be doing, whether they’re first-time buyers getting a toehold in the market, buy-to-let investors building up their portfolios or existing homeowners upgrading to bigger or more luxurious properties. “A trend bubbling under now is for family members to assist homebuyers to finance their new homes. Parents and grandparents are taking second bonds on their own homes, providing assets or cash as collateral to help younger members of the family become homeowners,” says Everitt. Gated estates and complexes which offer a combination of lifestyle and security
will be sought-after. “Open-plan living is always popular and there’s been a market shift towards low-maintenance community living, whether in smaller complexes or lifestyle estates,” says Maurizio Dalle-Vedove, area specialist, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty Durban, Durban North and Umhlanga. “We’ll see more focus on retirement villages as the demand continues to outweigh supply and eco-efficient homes and eco-estates will also become more prominent.” Recently built homes in new developments will also prove popular as they satisfy the demand for modern design and make good investments. “With the surge of development property coming on the market, it would be very wise to invest if it’s possible. Being able to purchase a property at today’s prices and only start paying for it in approximately 18 months makes great financial sense,” says Kerry Bailey, principal, Tyson Properties Umhlanga. Developments will not be confined to outlying areas of major centres, either. “Due to the increasing pace
of urbanisation, we also expect to see more densification wherever this is possible in high-demand, central suburbs that are close to all amenities and well-served by public transport,” says Everitt. “Developers will once again be on the hunt for older homes on large stands that they can rezone for multiunit sectional title and cluster projects in areas such as Fourways, Rivonia, Houghton and Rosebank in Johannesburg; Brooklyn and Lynnwood in Pretoria; Durban North; and many of the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town.” In terms of marketing, virtual tours and 3-D imaging will become increasingly popular next year. “Online media marketing, including virtual tours, is becoming the trend,” says Bailey. “Drone photography will also become more relevant, as commercial licences become more freely available, and the most talked about will probably be the use of Matterport cameras to create 3-D models of home interiors that give potential buyers an immersive, interactive experience of being in the property they are viewing online,” says Everitt.
