ost schools reopened this past week and we’re already halfway into January. While part of me would still like the holiday dreaminess to linger, it’s really time to get going. The beauty of coming back after a break is that there’s really more clarity and possibility to everything. You can literally decide what you want to value this year. I think I’m going to be more in favour of my home and perhaps dabble in some

any of us avoid digging too deeply into the world of meat production – with its intensive farming methods, growth hormones and feed lots – aware that knowing too much about what went into that pack of chops or boerie would put us off our braai, and we’re not quite ready to turn vegetarian. Andy and Nicole Fenner did that digging by tracking down farmers who raise their animals with respect. But they found another solution which led to a complete change of career and a thriving new business.

Swan Lake on Ice When and where?

C
atch the Imperial Ice Stars in their new production of the classic tale of Swan Lake. Whether you’ve seen Swan Lake before or not, this is a magical retelling that can’t be missed, performed to Tchaikovsky’s beloved score, against unforgettable backdrops and scenery.
Six years ago, their work in brand consultancy and advertising was centred on the food industry. As they dealt more with meat they realised how loosely words like organic and free-range were being thrown around. “No one could tell us where the meat actually came from,” remembers Andy, “not even the top chefs really knew the source of their meat. When we started digging deeper into it, we were shaken up.”

Open Streets Bree When and where?
Today on Bree Street
W
ith the first Open Streets early last year being a roaring success, Open Streets returns once again to Cape Town’s hippest area: Bree. This non-profit initiative encourages the public to use the entire road as a space to walk, play, exercise and express themselves.
Their response was to start Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants (FFMM), sourcing and supplying ethically raised meat. They spent two years searching for farmers to work with, who raise their animals the slow, old-fashioned way with space to roam and a natural diet. At their shop in Church Street customers can expect to connect with their meat, hooves and all. There is time to chat about
what you want to cook and discover different cuts that make the most of the whole animal. “Brisket is fantastic slow roasted on a Weber,” says Andy. “Bavette is an affordable and tasty cut of steak cooked over a high heat and cut against the grain.” Head-to-toe eating, so that nothing is wasted, is at the heart of FFMM philosophy. They are passionate about sausages too with at least 10 different boerewors and sausage recipes on the go, and are always experimenting. Their first shop in the CBD has now been supplemented with a satellite shop in Claremont’s Palmyra Junction, which opened in October to a welcoming response. This is just a hint of things to come. Andy and Nicole are fitting out a building in Woodstock as their central butchery facility to give them a greater capacity, and plan to open branches in more Cape Town suburbs, with the goal of making ethically raised meat accessible to all.
If everyone ate less meat, but better quality, farmers wouldn’t have to take shortcuts and we’d all eat better ANDY FENNER

Divine Wednesdays Explore the city’s first wine route with Tuning the Vine WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE IMAGES: SUPPLIED & ISTOCK
W
ho says you have to do the Groot Trek to Franschhoek, Stellenbosch or Constantia to enjoy some of SA’s best wines? The Inner City Wine Route’s new monthly event, Tuning the Vine, is bringing them to the city centre at some of Cape Town’s finest restaurants.
Wine, this year What will the year hold for the world of wine? We asked three Cape experts to gaze into their crystal balls
Gregory Mutambe, head sommelier, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa Q: New varieties to look out for this year? A: S ome of the Cape’s most celebrated wines consist of Roussanne and lately there has been a growing number of single-varietal Roussannes of superb quality. The same goes for Cinsaut which, evidently, is making a huge comeback. One of the “parents” of Pinotage, Cinsaut produced today stems from old vines, some of them bush vines, and the quality is remarkable.
WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES IMAGES: SUPPLIED
Allan Mullins, wine judge, Woolworths wine consultant
Cathy Marston, wine judge, author and educator for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust Q: What has you excited about wine this year? A: The rise of sommellerie is going to be a hot topic. I think we’re going to see a huge uplift in the wine service industry. Q: Niche varieties and wine styles on the horizon? A: There’s lots of exciting new stuff: the likes of Verdelho, Albarino and the revival of Carignan. Q: Up-and-coming wine regions? A: Elim… there are some interesting wineries, passionate winemakers and some of the oldest viticultural soils in the world.
Q: Which niche varieties will take centre stage this year? A: In white wines, Grenache Blanc. Tiny plantings, but we can see the promise. For red wines, Malbec. Super examples from Argentina and local examples get better with every vintage. It seems to be perfect for many of our terroirs… I’m not sure why, but younger drinkers seem to lap it up. Q: New styles coming to seek out? A: My wish, and hopefully my forecast, is that consumers realise how excellent our Chenin Blanc-based white blends are. Another interesting cultivar that, unfortunately, will never be big is Cinsaut, but it certainly provides a relatively easydrinking wine with attractive red berry fruit and soft tannins. Q: Wine regions to watch? A: Hemel-en-Aarde. It is not new, but has been undervalued for too long. Fabulous Pinot Noir, tremendous Chardonnay. The world is waking up to the quality of this region. It’s time we did.
The city’s first wine route, which was launched last year, proved to be a roaring success. One Wednesday a month, you’ll find all of the Mother City’s wine “connoisseurs” on the streets to find out more about SA’s hottest wines and, of course, to try them out. And I was there to hit the streets and test out this new trend for myself. The route brings the city’s hottest streets and venues together in a scavenger hunt with a difference. And, what’s more, December saw the addition of HQ, Yours Truly, and the #UpperBree clan
– Palma Culture Club, Bacon on Bree, Door 221 and Little Saint – making it a total of 21 spots on the route. There is so much to choose from that we didn’t know where to start and where to end. You’ll start your adventure at one of the ticketing stations: at Youngblood on Bree Street, or Tjing Tjing on Longmarket Street, or you can go to The ABC Bar at The Taj in St Georges Mall. You can produce your prepurchased ticket or buy one there, and you’ll be equipped with a map and a Tuning the Vine branded glass for all your tasting needs. From any one of those three spots you’ll find plenty of venues just a stone’s throw away. After an evening of tapas, music and plenty of fine wines we were hardpressed to find any fault in Tuning the Vine. You’ll find me back on the street next month to do it all over again.
Q: Wine region to keep an eye on? A: E lim. Its proximity to the ocean, cool climate conditions and unique terroir ensure that this area produces top white wines with bright acidity and distinctive freshness – and it is, of course, great for “heartbreak grapes” like Pinot Noir. Q: If you could only drink one local wine this year? A: S ilverthornThe Green Man MCC 2011. Very versatile with food, great for any occasion at any time of day – and so delicious and complex.

Simple, beautiful food Who needs foams and airs and graces when you can have beautifully prepared simple food? WORDS: BRIDGET MCNULTY
I
IMAGES: SUPPLIED & ISTOCK
Iwas lucky enough to go to Italy a Ifew years ago, and the thing that Istruck me most about the (delicious) food was how simply everything was prepared. We’ve all heard the story of how Americans warped the classic mozzarella and tomato pizza and turned it into a pineapple and ham confection, but it struck me that most of the world seems to have done that with our versions of Italian food. The meals we had in Italy were refreshing in their simplicity – wonderfully fresh food allowed to shine by virtue of the fact that it was superb quality, without needing any foams or airs and graces. Dinner at 95 Keerom reminded me of this because it has exactly the same attitude towards its food. Its tagline
is “Real Italian Quality” and that’s exactly what you get on the plate, from the house speciality carpaccio (with generous curls of real Parmesan cheese), to the extraordinarily tasty fresh asparagus, decadent lobster pasta and superb ostrich and pork dishes. It’s a big menu, with the classic Italian antipasti, pasta, fish and meat, as well as a whole section of carpaccio (raw and seared) and a number of superb side dishes (Parmesan mashed potato – be still, my beating heart!). Luckily the staff can recommend firm favourites and there are a number of options that are specific to 95 Keerom, so it’s not too difficult to make a decision. The desserts are also a must, of course, especially the chocolate fondant
which was as close to perfect as I have tasted, and the extensive wine menu complements the food beautifully. The food, the wine, the glamorous interiors and ancient exteriors – the building is circa 1682 when it was built to house the stables and slave quarters of the Company’s Garden – all add up to the kind of evening you’ll remember with a smile. A simple, satisfied smile.

Experience creative cinema with multisensory 4DX, brought to you by Nu Metro WORDS: LAUREN JOUBERT IMAGES: SUPPLIED & ISTOCK
T
he name 4DX has been popping up all around lately. Having heard there are moving seats, scents and spraying water, we decided we had to go and experience it for ourselves.
What is 4DX?
4DX uses motion, vibration, water, wind, lightning effects and scents to provide all moviegoers an invigorating and fascinating experience. “Nu Metro Cinemas is very excited to open the first ever 4DX cinema for Africa. It is a strategic move, fitting our commitment to supplying customers with a fully immersive cinema experience, utilising the best, most-upto-date, world-class technology. 4DX fulfils those expectations as the new 4D cinemas will involve all five senses for consumers to enjoy a cinema outing like nothing else they’ve seen, heard, or felt before. With the introduction of 4DX, Nu Metro Cinemas now joins an elite group of cinema chains using this technology, and showcasing popular blockbusters in this groundbreaking format,” says Nitesh Matai, general manager, Nu Metro Cinemas.
Our experience
Not knowing what to expect, we entered the 4DX cinema with bated breath. Everything looked the same, apart from the seats which were slightly elevated and in a bright red colour. The signal for the 3D glasses came on and we were introduced to the effects of 4DX with a street car chase scene as a demo. The seats rolled and pitched, precision vibrations and scents along with a slight mist shot out from the seat in front of us, which added a sense of extreme excitement for the feature that was about to begin. We were lucky enough to experience Star Wars: The Force Awakens in this revolutionary cinematic format. The lightning effects corresponded with the lightsaber fights – the vibrations made us feel like we were in the spaceships with the characters, and the slight rolling of the chairs made us feel weightless as the screen reflected the galaxy. The scent, water and wind corresponded well with the vast landscapes projected on the slightly curved 3D screen. The Nu Metro 4DX cinema at the V&A Waterfront is a must for all moviegoers. Don’t expect to concentrate on the latest blockbuster – it’s easy to get distracted from the storyline of the film – but the overall cinematic experience is a must.

The brutal truth WORDS: CHRIS REID
IMAGE: 20EIGHT
NEWS & LIFESTYLE
11
B
rutalism, an architectural trend that flourished in the 1960s and 1970s under designers like Erno Goldfinger and Le Corbusier, has to be one of the most polarising styles of the 20th century. With its hallmarks of large expanses of concrete, utilitarian design and bold silhouettes, it was a popular choice for institutional, educational and governmental buildings (especially in Eastern Europe). Ponte Tower in Joburg is probably the most prominent example of the style in South Africa, and shows the combination of technical skill and boldness of vision that best characterises brutalism. Reaction to the trend in its own time, however, was mixed at best. Even though the “brutal” in its name refers to the French term for raw concrete (béton brut) rather than a particularly aggressive attitude, it’s often derided by critics for being cold and dehumanising. With the ’60s and ’70s back in fashion, it is unsurprising that brutalism is also seeing a resurgence of interest. Tours of brutalist landmarks have become popular attractions in the UK, and dedicated social media accounts have been set up to help people appreciate the style (see @thisbrutallife on Instagram). While going full-on brutalist with interiors is not an option for most homeowners, we’re seeing it creep in as inspiration behind product design in all kinds of places. At Maison et Objet in Paris, starkly utilitarian designs were seen in everything from furniture and lighting to tableware. Locally, the design company 20eight takes the style and translates it into everything from lighting and bird feeders to jewellery. While brutalism isn’t for everyone, the style is not without its appeal. Whether it’s because homeowners are looking for a more minimal way to create retro-inspired homes, or simply appreciate the solidity and boldness of the style, prepare for a new wave of utilitarian interiors.

Why January is a bad time for landlords
My business I neighbourhood
n a recent analysis conducted by TPN Credit Bureau, data shows that rental payment collections in South Africa usually decline by about 12,5% in January each year.
Q & A with Felix and Manus Holm, owners, Maker Station in Woodstock
O & A
W O R D S : K I T H E AT H CO C K I M AG E S : S U P P L I E D
C
reative and practical jacks of all trades Felix and Manus Holm started Maker Station about a year ago. A shared workshop space, members have access to a wide selection of tools, equipment and expertise – from a small foundry to welding equipment, woodworking, 3-D printing and so on – and can rent space and tools on a short-term basis for the duration of a project. At its core is a strong community ethos, so if you don’t have the skills, you can get practical help and advice, or else job out more complicated aspects to other members. Q: How did your business start? A: My brother Manus and I both happened to need new premises at the same time. We’d been looking at the maker spaces concept which is popular in Europe and decided to rent a bigger warehouse than
we needed and sublet the extra space. We joined forces with all our equipment and went from there. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: It’s well located within the Woodstock creative area, between the Woodstock Exchange and the Old Biscuit Mill, close to many of our typical customers. It’s also close to the Paarden Eiland industrial area where a lot of our suppliers are, and to the CBD. People work here after hours, and as a mixeduse area with residential property, it isn’t scarily deserted at night. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We’d been looking for more than a year all over the City Bowl, using agents, but in the end we drove past by accident and saw the To Let sign.
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It’s a light industrial building with two floors, so we can separate out the dirtier, heavy work onto one floor and keep the other for clean desktop and craft use. There aren’t many residential neighbours, so the noise factor isn’t a problem. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: A taxi company, a props rental company, sculptors’ studios, a foundry and a block of flats where a lot of our DIY members come from. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: It’s cheaper than the City Bowl, but more expensive than a dedicated industrial area. As a service business with easy access for the public we have the best of both worlds.
This decline only takes into account the behaviour analytics of tenants who pay late, not even those who partially pay or default on their payment entirely. According to Michelle Dickens, managing director, TPN, it could be argued that the public holiday on 1 January contributes to the average day that rent is paid being stretched to 8 or 9 January when, for the remainder of the year, rent is
How to find a good investment property
Q: What is your shop footprint? A: Five to 10 members working in the space most days. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We want to expand on this business model and put up another satellite hub somewhere like Stellenbosch, developing our network of resources. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have an online directory listing everything from suppliers to experts and consultants. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Renting short-term workshop space to people working on a specific project and, in our own work, assembling artworks for the community of sculptors and artists. consistently paid by the 6th or 7th of the month. She says, “If that were the case, we would see a similar trend in months like April or May where there are multiple public holidays. Interestingly enough, there is no such increase over the Easter holidays or any other month with significant public holidays. This phenomenon is unique only to January.” Dickens continues, “Tenants who display the classic festive season syndrome are not malicious in nature, but are simply caught in a continuation of their holiday payment behaviour before reality sets in and they return to their better selves and better payment behaviour.”

Development Joint Venture Public Private Sector Partnership between the eThekwini Municipality and Tongaat Hulett. The first was the successful Riverhorse Valley Business Estate.
Brian Ive, development executive, Tongaat Hulett Developments, says that a number of sales have been concluded recently and that construction of two of these developments is beginning during the first quarter of this year.
While the second is primarily industrial with a single hospital, Bridge City, however, is a mixeduse development that will provide for light industrial use as well as accommodate medical, commercial, retail and residential elements.
So far, half of the sites within the Bridge City Town Centre have been sold and there are now four sites available in the 17ha Bridge City Business Estate. Bridge City is being developed as the second leg of the Effingham
Ive says the holistic planning of the area is expected to make a significant contribution to providing employment for and uplifting communities within the neighbouring Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu areas.

makeover – streets in Durban, Bloemfontein, Cape Town, and Joburg were replaced with cities, neighbourhoods and landmarks. Property in Clifton, the prime property suburb on the board, would set you back R40,000.
The most expensive real estate was Eloff Street at R400. Cape Town properties were in second place, with Long, Plein and Parliament streets as the prime pickings. An investment in Musgrave Road would have been an excellent one as it is by far the most expensive street in Durban from the original board, and is now nearly four times as valuable as Gillespie Street. The 2002 edition underwent a
Fast forward to 2015 and Clifton is still the suburb with the highest property values. The median price for a property in Nettleton Road is R41m. That’s over 1,000 times the price of a Clifton property on the 2002 Monopoly board. The top Durban street to own property in is Hickory Road, in the Hawaan Forest suburb, where property will set you back about R9m.

About the Southern Suburbs
A
long the south-east slopes of Table Mountain lie some of the Western Cape’s most desirable suburbs, such as the luscious and green streets of Newlands, the buzzing metropole of Claremont, the familyfriendly homes of Rondebosch and more. The high demand for property in the Southern Suburbs is due to its short driving distance from the City Bowl, yet it seems far removed with its close proximity to the mountain, dramatic views, hiking trails and forest – all in its back yard.

There’s no trick to investing M
any people are intimidated by the idea of investing their hard-earned money. In many ways the financial services industry has perpetuated this by making it seem like investing is a mysterious art that can only be successfully performed by the most astute professionals.
Thankfully this idea is beginning to erode. The truth is that while successful investing certainly isn’t easy, it can be simple. Investors just need to keep a few basic principles in mind:
The sooner you start the better
The Great Trek is set to continue A strong desire to live in the Western Cape will continue to fuel demand for property in 2016
WORDS: LEA JACOBS IMAGE: ISTOCK
C
ape Town’s property market performed exceptionally well last year, and although the economic outlook may have changed the playing fields somewhat, demand for homes in the province is still high. “While sales volumes slowed in 2015 on the back of a notable slowdown in the economy, a rise in overall costs (including utility costs), the interest rate hikes and of course the tax hikes which included an increase in transfer duty on transactions above R5m, the Cape market has nonetheless performed well in 2015,” says Samuel Seeff, chairman, Seeff Properties. “In terms of areas of growth in 2016, the mid-section of the market – that is properties priced below R2m – will continue picking up the bulk of activity, but the top-end areas – which include the Atlantic Seaboard (from the V&A Waterfront right through to Sea Point, Camps Bay and Clifton and in fact stretching past Llandudno to Hout Bay) – would continue seeing strong demand from top-end buyers.”
The property market in the Cape is still in a bullish phase with demand outstripping supply LAURIE WEINER, MD, PAM GOLDING PROPERTIES
The greatest gift any investor can give themselves is time. The longer your money is able to work for you, the greater the benefit. This is very simply illustrated by an example of someone who invests R500 every month. If they are able to earn a 10% return on that money, in 10 years it will grow into just over R100,000, in 20 years R380,000, in 30 years R1,14m and in 40 years R3,19m. The wonder of compounding means that the longer the money remains untouched, the faster it will grow because you will start earning interest on top of interest.
Diversify
Many investors make the mistake of chasing the “next big thing”. They are always trying to anticipate where their money will grow fastest and keep moving it into different funds or assets.
make property a wise investment, especially for those with cash. “We expect two new drivers to increase buying activity, namely foreign-African captains of industry and professionals for whom access to the Cape is relatively quick with all its benefits, and the Cape becoming a preferred destination for holiday or part-time/full-time residence due to its safety compared to the widespread overseas terrorist activities.”
However, this is a strategy that is almost always destined to fail. Not only because it is impossible to predict the markets, but also because it is based on always having all your money in one place. The best investment strategy involves putting your money into a selection of different funds and asset classes so that you have many different sources of return. If one underperforms for a while, you don’t need to worry because you will be getting outperformance from somewhere else.
Lew Geffen, chairman, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, says the Western Cape is experiencing and will continue to experience a net influx of homebuyers – largely from Gauteng, but also from KwaZulu-Natal – and that families are often prepared to downscale to accommodate the higher property prices, simply to be able to live in Cape Town and its surrounds.
Laurie Weiner, MD, Pam Golding Properties in the Western Cape Metro Region, points out that the property market in the Cape is still in a bullish phase with demand outstripping supply.
“There is a correct perception that service delivery is far superior in Cape Town when compared to the rest of the country, and that public infrastructure in the city works better than it does anywhere else. People with the means to afford it want to live in a city where the water supply doesn’t summarily disappear for days, where traffic lights work and where there is more tar surface than potholes,” he says.
“In a perverse way the poor economic indicators seem to enhance the desire to invest in property due to its historically good capital growth and even rental yields from the equally upbeat rental market. The weak rand and increasing interest rate also
“I don’t believe we’ll see a slowing of this ‘Great Trek’ in reverse any time soon, but this time it’s happening across all colour lines. South Africans in general are fed up with local governments that don’t deliver services, and everybody has a right to feel safe,” he says.
Stick to your plan
Because investing is always about your long-term future, it’s easy to be distracted by short-term issues. People see markets dropping or hear about economic problems and think that they need to do something to protect their money.
The greatest gift any investor can give themselves is time. The longer your money is able to work for you, the greater the benefit
However, if you started off with the right investment plan, you should have very little need to change it. What happens over one day or a week or even a few years is not that important. What matters is the full life of your investment over 30 or 40 years. If you get your decisions right from the start, the small bumps on the way should smooth themselves out. Knowing what your plan is and being willing to stick with it therefore makes investing a lot less stressful and ultimately more rewarding.
