reat wines have a story to tell, whether it’s of the vintage, the winemaker or the years of toil that have gone into the vineyards. That’s certainly the case with the new Tales Series from Journey’s End Vineyards, situated on the slopes of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, above Sir Lowry’s Pass Village. Tucked into a corner of the Somerset West winelands it’s a winery that takes a little effort to get to but is well worth the drive. For starters there are the views, which the tasting centre takes full advantage of, with glass walls looking both into the barrel cellar and out across False Bay. That coastal terroir has a huge impact on the wines, but surprisingly that’s not the story behind the Weather Station Sauvignon Blanc. Rather it’s named for the “Weather Station” clone of sauvignon blanc which rose to prominence in the Stellenbosch winelands. There’s plenty of complexity here thanks to fruit being sourced from Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl vineyards, and a pleasing richness to offset the bright acidity on the palate.
will be on display for the duration of the expo, with visitors invited to bid on their favourite design or artwork in a silent bidding process. All funds raised will be donated to DARG.
The Haystack Chardonnay also has a tale to tell, of the age-old practice of inter-planting vineyard rows with wheat to keep pests away from the precious vines. It’s one of a number of sustainable practices on the farm, from introducing owls to keep rodents from the vineyards, to converting the entire farm to solar power. There’s a lovely balance in the wine too, with both citrus notes and minerality underpinned by a gentle hint of oak.
Says Sandy Edwards, expo organiser, “Packed with inspirational ideas and exciting features, the 2019 Cape Town Homemakers Expo will offer visitors the perfect opportunity to explore, consider and purchase all the things one needs for your home and garden projects. We know that buyers are eager to hear the stories and experience the realness of products. The Cape Town Homemakers Expo is the perfect platform for home-related artisans, manufacturers, specialists and knowledgeable experts to come face-to-face and make authentic connections with our visitors. It’s one of the most important events on the Cape Town exhibition calendar with 340 exhibitors and 85 home-related categories in a 8,500m² space. Whether a shopper, inspiration seeker or DIY enthusiast, it’s all about Raw Comfort!”
The Pastor’s Blend is more of a mouthful, as you’d expect from a rich and ripe blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc. It’s a tip of the hat to the two pastors from the nearby Sir Lowry’s Pass village, with whom they collaborate on various community projects. The wine will also leave you with a smile on your face. But the real crowd-pleaser is The Huntsman, a Rhône-style blend of shiraz, mourvèdre and viognier. It pays homage to the hound-led hunts that were once run on the farm, with the original kennels unearthed during the planning of a new cellar. With violets, dark berries and a hint of spice on the palate, it’s a Very Good Boy indeed.
Tickets are available at the door or from Quicket (quicket.co.za). Adults pay R90, pensioners R70 and kids under 16 enter free. The expo will be open Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 7pm, and on Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

Paarl
Viande Restaurant | 021 863 5100 | granderoche.com/viande
Top to tail Chef Pete Goffe-Wood has launched his new meat-focussed restaurant at the refurbished Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

B
eautiful heritage buildings dating back to the 1700s, blocks of vines, a backdrop of Paarl Rock and sweeping views over the valley, Grande Roche Hotel really is Paarl in a nutshell. Until recently it was exclusively the domain of hotel guests but new owners Theresa and Hansie Britz, themselves Paarlites and local winemakers, wanted it to become a social hub for locals too. To this end they have partnered with Chef Pete Goffe-Wood for their restaurant and hotel food offering. His reputation as Kitchen Cowboy and master of meat gives a clue of what to expect – the name Viande, French for meat, confirms it. Locally sourced, nose to tail, the menu showcases varied cuts of meat – with plenty of non-scary meat and vegetarian options – upmarket bistro rather than
fine-dining in style. The wine list also has a local focus, highlighting Paarl, Wellington and the Paardeberg region. “We wanted to get rid of the stuffiness and the fear of being shouted at if you use the wrong fork,” says Pete. “But still cognisant of where we are in a historic building, the grandeur remains but we’ve given it a new lease of life – more modern and approachable.” The decor is chic and quirky, encouraging laughter and conviviality rather than hushed dining room propriety. Everything is done in-house, from curing bacon and dry-aging meat, to pickles and jam-making. Kicking off our lunch, vetkoek and soft rolls came with farm butter and a delicious herby, salty whipped lard. Robust flavours are the hallmark here, our starter of smoked silverfish was full-on smoky, freshened by fennel, citrus and tarragon salad
cream. Next up, the veal sweetbreads with gnocchi were an absolute treat, rich with mushrooms and homecured bacon – deep umami winter sumptuousness. Roast lamb rib-eye for mains, uncomplicated and hearty, came with a luscious creamy baked aubergine dish fragrant with basil. Chocoholics should go for the ice cream sundae – vanilla and chocolate ice cream on rich chocolate mousse, chunks of brownies and caramelised hazelnuts. We were also treated to an espresso martini – a concoction of 15-year-old KWV brandy, espresso, Galliano coffee liqueur and a touch of orange zest. Viande looks set to become Paarl’s hot new spot for cocktails and tapas at the bar, sundowners on the terrace, and epic Sunday lunches, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner, adding a warm welcoming vibe to this historic gem.

Tile talk Today’s world of tiles is limitless, and South Africans are playing with international trends and even adapting them creatively to the local lifestyle WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGES: SUPPLIED
S
tep into a tile warehouse, and the vast selection is literally mind-blowing – the multitude of shapes, sizes, colours and applications is overwhelming. Globally, tiles are no longer simply a tile. They’re not only visually mimicking other materials such as wood, but now, there’s textured tiles too, to satisfy our tactile senses. More and more tiles are popping up with three-dimensional or etched surfaces, so they’re textured and touchable. Nicole Russell, marketing manager, Italtile, says with social media, print and online, consumers are far more savvy than before. “They’re eager to keep up to date with international trends, and implement them.” Fact is, there isn’t a single immutable trend and some have been around for many seasons. Take those who still love the timeless black, white and grey, they’re there on the shelves, but in many more shapes, sizes and patterns. Their application, too, can be entirely different from yesteryear – intricately patterned, even vintage, black and white patchwork tiles run into a block of solid grey tiles, or on the floor, patterned tiles meet an irregular block of concrete, emulating a weathered old floor.
Size matters
Russell says, “We’re going BIG. Gone are the days of 300x300, even 600x600 tiles are fading away. The bigger the better – 900x900, 1200x1200 and slabs as big as 1200x2400. Bringing large slabs into the home is a growing request, tiling fireplaces or kitchen islands, allowing a seamless look to mirror the wall or floor tiling, initiating the perception of a bigger area – with the added benefits of the longer lifespan of a low-maintenance tile.” That doesn’t mean little subway-style tiles have disappeared from our pools, bathrooms, kitchens, and so on – on the contrary, they’re there, only slightly
elongated. For tiny bathrooms or loos – as our living spaces become more compact – lay them on their side rather than horizontally, and you’ve instantly lifted the ceiling visually.
Shapes and colours
Geometrics are still a great favourite. Des Armstrong of Hadeda says the hexagonal look on floors is very big, and increasingly, the weathered, washed and aged look. Armstrong’s decorative encaustic cement tiles – also known as Moroccan, Victorian, Spanish, patchwork or hydraulic tiles – are an ode to colour, and when the going gets tough, many want to lift their world with colour. She says there’s a strong pull towards the handmade, artisanal type tile, and even if it hasn’t actually been handmade, the machine-made ones are working hard at emulating that aged or weathered look. Mosaics, too, are still on trend, but with the oodles of patterns, motifs and colours, those tiny tiles can become a work of art. Available as small squares, herringbone, hexagons and chevron, you can transform a non-descript space into something extraordinary. Russell suggests that, “Matt black is the growing colour trend in bathrooms and kitchens, and increasingly, a rose gold and brushed bronze. These colour trends aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.” She says Italtiles’ top colours are beige, greens, charcoals, and earthy focus colours. Many tiles now replicate wood, and you’ll find oversized fauxoak planks or white faux-oak planks.
Outside
“With recent technology, the slipresistant option is growing in varied ranges of tiles,” says Russell. “From wood to stone to screed – from the patios to tiling around the pool, it’s teamed up with a matching indoor tile for a cohesive look throughout your entertainment area.”

30th edition of property and construction cost guide launched I ntegrated infrastructure delivery company AECOM has launched its Africa Property & Construction Cost Guide 2019/20 in conjunction with its strategic partner, the Bureau of Economic Research (BER) at the University of Stellenbosch. The Cost Guide forms part of AECOM’s commitment to improving project delivery by conducting unique research into the broader industry. “Our goal is to unlock the transformational change and innovation required to move the industry forward,” director – PCC, Africa Dean Narainsamy comments. “In each of the 30 editions, we’ve shared our knowledge of Africa’s economy and construction sector, contributing to the wider discussion on how to unlock investment opportunities across Africa.” The Cost Guide notes that there’s an ever-growing need to finance infrastructure on the continent. A number of countries are now prioritising this, following a realisation of the importance of industrialisation to not only maintain growth in their economies, but also to diversify by exporting goods and services. This will generate much-needed jobs for an increasingly younger population. A developing industrial sector on the continent also requires more infrastructure investment, particularly in power, water, and
transportation services, which are already over-stretched.
Increased oil prices and the stabilisation of commodity prices have strengthened the forecast for GDP growth on the continent, with predictions of collective growth of 3% to 4% for 2019/20, and individual countries increasing by as much as 7% to 8%. Although some growth is evident in the construction sector in North
Africa, this has been restricted to a few countries that have stabilised following the Arab spring. In sub-Saharan Africa, there’s steady growth in the infrastructure and construction sectors, as well as in East and West Africa. The Cost Guide concludes that Africa continues to grow, with a steady increase of larger infrastructure and construction projects coming to market that will provide the opportunities for investment and service providers for 2019 and beyond.
Co-working spaces remain popular
A
s South Africa’s small entrepreneurial and new digital and creative class grows, there’s a growing need to rethink the idea of the traditional office, says Craig Francis, Mike Moran and Frances Gray-Mnukwana, Seeff False Bay’s commercial brokerage team. Today’s professionals, creatives and start-ups no longer need to rent expensive business premises and incur the cost of setting up an office with meeting rooms. Co-working spaces offer the benefit of cost-efficiency and is one of the fastest-growing property trends to meet the needs of a growing entrepreneurial, creative and digital business class in the country. These spaces generally offer a complete one-stop solution with fully furnished workspaces, meeting facilities, high-speed internet,
sometimes with secretarial facilities, coffee utilities and more. You can literally just arrive with your laptop, plug-in and start operating, or just arrive for a business meeting. Even corporate companies are increasingly utilising these spaces to enjoy collaboration with other companies and entrepreneurs in addition to leveraging savings on operating costs. It offers an ideal solution for large organisations who may be unable to recruit suitable workforces to their headquarters due to its location in relation to where individuals live. The commute to the office in the major cities is increasingly seen as time wastage, costly and counterproductive, says the Seeff team. Enabled by technology, these corporates can now set up remote teams in distant co-working spaces, often with the added benefit of more flexible leases.

Retirement focus
Life is a holiday Those making a retirement property purchase are often drawn to coastal destinations for the surroundings, but inland estates offering the same sought-after lifestyle are equally popular as investment options WORDS: GEORGINA GUEDES & KIM MAXWELL IMAGES: SUPPLIED & SHUTTERSTOCK

Western Cape Offering a “five-star lifestyle for the over 50s”, the award-winning De Plattekloof Lifestyle Estate, between Bellville and Bloubergstrand in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, caters to luxury buyers in the R7m price range. A full ownership model buys great views and urban proximity. At Evergreen Lake Michelle, you can expect tranquil views of mountains and water in this board-walked multigenerational estate on 90ha in rural Noordhoek. These are some of the unique qualities that Evergreen offers to ensure relaxed living in later life,” explains Prieska Taylor, marketing manager, Evergreen Lifestyle. Set in picturesque surroundings, Zevenwacht Lifestyle Estate provides everything a mature resident may want or need in a full title or sectional title model, so investors can benefit from property capital growth. Adjacent to the vineyards of historic Zevenwacht Estate (residents’ discounts on wine and spa treatments are a plus), it offers Winelands views and comfortable accommodation options ranging from lifestyle homes and independent living apartments to assisted living suites and frail care rooms. More than 100 apartments have been sold at Buh-Rein Retirement Village in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. “Many retirement schemes cater only to the upper market. Both the independent living and assisted living apartments are priced from R919,900.
Within the larger estate of Clara Anna Fontein Lifestyle Estate in rural Durbanville, Oasis Life’s retirement option offers retirees one- to three-bedroom single-level homes with garages, gardens and braai areas. “Oasis Life’s key focus is on creating a lifestyle choice like no other,” says John Chapman, director, Rabie Property Group. “We realise that retirement is about embracing a new chapter in your life rather than necessarily slowing down.” Situated near the West Coast National Park, Langebaan is a popular attraction for sailing and kiting. Its birdlife is another draw card.
