A striking revamp has made Glenelly one of the must-visit estates in the Cape Winelands this summer

After three decades at the helm of acclaimed Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande winery in Bordeaux, the combination of beautiful scenery and stellar terroir is what prompted May de Lencquesaing to purchase a 123ha farm here in 2003, at the grand age of 78. Today the French connection runs clearly through the revamped estate, which boasts a stylish new tasting room and bistro offering wonderful vineyard views. As you’d expect from an owner with deep roots in Bordeaux, the focus at Glenelly is on noble red cultivars, with some 60ha planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. There’s a little

Chardonnay planted here too, and it’s certainly put to good use by winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain in both the terroir-driven Glass Collection and Estate Reserve ranges. A taste of Glenelly’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, aptly named Lady May, is also not to be missed. These are all best explored on the range of tasting journeys conducted in the gleaming new tasting room atop the modern winery. There’s a contemporary aesthetic here, from the granite bar to picture windows letting in plenty of light and vineyard views. A range of tasting experiences are offered, allowing visitors to sample both current releases and previous vintages. Tastings of aged wines from Chateau Pichon Lalande are also available on request. Luke’s wines are delicious on their own, but “wines are made to pair with food, so introducing a culinary

experience at Glenelly was the logical next step on our journey,” says May. With Christophe Dehosse, of Joostenberg Bistro fame, at the pass it’s little wonder the food is superb. Expect a modern take on classic bistro dishes – a Cape bouillabaisse with croutons, perhaps, or pork cheeks braised in red wine – alongside a wine list encompassing both current and past Glenelly vintages. There’s a charming bistro feel indoors, but on a sunny summer’s day you’ll want to be out on the spacious terrace. Before you leave, stop in for a peek at May’s 160-piece Glass Collection, which takes guests on a journey through 2,000 years of glass-making.

A country table Enjoy lazy weekend lunches with generous and nurturing country food WORDS & IMAGES: KIT HEATHCOCK

P

icture tables under shady oak trees, friends and family gathered, old-fashioned serving plates generously laden with tasty food. That’s what The Table, at De Meye Wine Farm near Stellenbosch, is all about. Add the spacious lawn with picnic blankets for post-prandial siestas, the organic vegetable garden and the green surrounds of the boutique wine estate, and a leisurely lunch here is a special weekend escape. Chef Jessica Shepherd and her husband Luke Grant have created a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and, by keeping the restaurant small (serving a set lunch menu to about 60 people Friday to Sunday), have preserved an intimate family feel. Jess serves the best kind of country cooking: nurturing, generous and creative – the kind of food that you wish you could cook at home.

“My food is about feeling happy, it’s food that speaks to me on a personal level. I’m not trying to do fine dining, it’s like a meal that you would eat at home, cooked with a lot of care and skill. It’s about the ingredients you use and the way you put them together.” A whole beetroot tarte tatin arrives for my partner and I topped with sour cream and a salad of baby leaves with a lavender-infused vinaigrette. Fresh and deep flavours mingle, with sweet and savoury perfectly balanced. There’s crusty sourdough from Schoon in Stellenbosch on the side, farm butter and olives. Luke tells us the origin of the ingredients as he brings each dish: what they don’t grow in their organic veggie garden, they carefully source and collect personally from small local suppliers. It’s this dedicated approach that recently

won them the inaugural Eat Out Woolworths Sustainability Award. Two pretty oval serving dishes arrive, one bearing rich and tender slow-cooked beef (pasture-raised and supplied by Ryan Boon) with Hasselback potatoes, the other an abundant selection of roast veg from the garden, baby turnips, fennel and radishes drizzled with zesty gremolata. And then dessert: home-grown raspberries and strawberries on yoghurt panna cotta with a perfumed sorbet of peaches poached in a rose geranium syrup – summer bliss in a glass. The magic of this secret country hideaway is hard to leave behind and we stroll around the vegetable garden and budding permaculture food forest before reluctantly tearing ourselves away.

If she is to be believed, there’s never a bad time for a bottle of bubbly, and with the festive season in full swing it’s hard not to agree with her.

wine” is simply white or rosé wine infused with carbon dioxide, while the best local versions are produced using the traditional French method where a second fermentation in the bottle gives rise to a fine bead of bubbles and a delicate “mousse” in the glass when poured. To be called champagne it must be produced in the Champagne region of France, so local sparkling wines produced in this way are known as Méthode Cap Classique (MCC). Try these fine bottles of fizz on for size.

Not all bubblies are created equal, though. Entry-level “sparkling

ily Bollinger once said: “I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty.”

Made from 100% Chardonnay, this limited release bubbly (only 2,850 bottles) won a gold medal at the 2016 Amorim Cap Classique Challenge. Fresh citrus and apple notes are balanced neatly against brioche notes thanks to barrel-fermentation and just over three years on the lees (spent yeast cells) during secondary fermentation.

Krone Night Nectar Rosé 2015

For those who find traditional MCC too dry, this demi-sec (semisweet) blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is bursting with strawberry and cranberry notes. The lower alcohol makes it well suited to a warm summer’s lunch, while it would also pair well with berry pavlova or fruity desserts. Kleine Zalze Vintage Brut 2011 This classic 60/40 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is a wonderful taste of old-style bubbly: bottle-fermented and matured for three years. A full-bodied MCC that dishes up plenty of rich biscuit flavours and minerality on the palate. A top-notch choice for the price.

My business neighbourhood Studio 18 at the Woodstock Foundry is a stylish new retail collaboration between Indigi Designs and Minima WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED

N

atalie du Toit, owner and designer, Indigi Designs, and Jacques Cronje of Minima have recently joined forces to launch a collaborative retail space called Studio 18, showing Indigi’s contemporary textiles and furniture and Minima’s distinctive timber lighting and furniture design. Natalie tells us more about Indigi and Studio 18. Q: How did your business start? A: In 2011, I left my full-time job and a week later exhibited at Design Indaba launching Indigi Designs. We focus on innovative design, carefully selected materials, local handcrafting techniques and creating sustainable employment for the group of African artisans who create our designs, and we’re very proud to have won the Fil Vert Award for best sustainable design at the recent Maison et Objet in Paris.

Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: Woodstock has developed into the design hub of Cape Town, so it was first choice in terms of location. The rental pricing is more reasonable than central Cape Town and I sit in less traffic to get to Woodstock! Q: How did you find your premises? A: I visited the Woodstock Foundry one day to say hello to Theresa from Smart Art. I was looking for premises and Theresa was looking for someone to share the space with – so Smart Art and Indigi Designs shared a showroom for a year until it came time for us to have our own showroom. Recently, Minima joined our space which we have called Studio 18. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he Woodstock Foundry is a hub of well-known creative

businesses and we are surrounded by great neighbours. There’s a fantastic vibe here and it’s a real destination point in Woodstock. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Minima, Vogel Design, Casamento, Dear Rae, Opus, Lauren Fowler, Smart Art, Mandibles, Atang Tshikare, Gerick Terblanche, Egon Tania, VM Central, and Lobby Hair, to name a few. And we have the wonderful Tribe Coffee and The Fat Cactus fuelling us throughout the day.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, we do! We’re always seeking, always striving. Can’t let the cat out of the bag just yet, however. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have an online store on our website. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: On the fabric side, it’s cushion covers, and on the furniture side, it’s our Fracture Armchair.

Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Competitive. SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: What is your shop footprint? A: T he Woodstock Foundry is not a high-traffic retail space but more of a destination place. Peak season is from October to March and then we have higher foot traffic.

SA housing market in 2017

Student W accommodation We bring you a few options to help you in your search for a place to stay during your university studies WORDS: MOLLY FITZ-PATRICK IMAGE: SUPPLIED

W

hen starting your journey as a student, you generally have four main accommodation options: living at home, university residences, digs/shared housing and private student accommodation. If you’ve decided to go to university in your home town, staying at your family home is a cost-effective and easy option. While many opt for the “proper” student experience by moving out, living at home can be more sensible. You’re comfortable, close by and can save on living expenses. The saving element is important as student life can be one of financial strain, especially if your course is too demanding to allow for a part-time job. For those who are going to university in a different town or city, university residences are usually the first choice for accommodation. Residences are usually located very close to or on campus. They offer a fun, comfortable and inclusive living experience. Students have the chance to join clubs and committees linked to their res, providing opportunities to get involved and have a great student life. Each institution offers several residences. However, there aren’t enough residences to accommodate all the students who need them. Moving in to a digs is another option. It’s ideal for students to live with other students, and living in a digs often

gives more freedom than living in a res. Digs also gives you more options in your search; as long as transport is available, there aren’t any restrictions on which areas to consider. Or you could opt for private student accommodation. These are created with the student in mind and offer a terrific student lifestyle, and some include all the modern conveniences. Private student accommodation offers all the inclusivity and closeness of a res while giving students more freedom. Apartments such as CampusKey, which are located close to university campuses, offer excellent facilities that make a student’s life comfortable, secure and easy. Leon Howell, MD, CampusKey, says: “Students will be able to start their university life with ease, moving in to a luxury, fully furnished room. Water and electricity, as well as Wi-Fi are included in the cost. CampusKey also provides laundry facilities, secure parking, and bicycle storage, clubhouses with DStv as well as fully equipped gyms.” Parents can rest easy as “security is our number one priority; a dedicated management team is available to students 24/7,” adds Howell. Consider all of your accommodation options when beginning your student life and choose the one that best suits you, your lifestyle and your budget.

hile political and economic uncertainty is likely to continue across the globe next year, it is hoped that local economic growth will be modestly stronger, which will be more supportive for the South African housing market, says Andrew Golding, CEO, Pam Golding Property Group. “Economists and commentators in general are more positive about growth next year, while business confidence has improved, which in turn enhances overall sentiment which is a key driver of the residential property market. “Much depends on the performance of the rand, but on balance the general expectation is that inflation will fall

quite noticeably by the second half of 2017, hopefully with the Reserve Bank looking to cut interest rates during this latter part of the year. “While the prospect of anticipated stronger US growth would support the South African economic growth rate, a stronger US dollar and increase in US interest rates may impact the rand, with implications for inflation and exerting pressure on our own interest rates.” Golding says against this backdrop a recurring theme internationally both currently and historically is that global uncertainty makes property an attractive investment, with potentially good returns and the opportunity for capital preservation.

Looking at the four major provinces, it is evident the market has been slowing down over recent months. This is more pronounced in the Western Cape and Gauteng with KwaZuluNatal maintaining a steady growth slightly less than 6% and the Eastern Cape slowly picking up. Despite the slowdown in the Western Cape, it still comes out on top with a rate of 7,9%. LIGHTSTONE PROPERTY, RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY INDICES OCTOBER 2016

Defaults on home loans increase over holiday period

A

pproximately 80% of those who default in December are highly likely to miss January payments. Missed home loan repayments rise on average by more than 10% in the December period, according to FNB Home Loans. “We find that customers don’t intentionally use their bond money. However, early salary payments and overspending quickly put consumers into a position where they aren’t able to meet their debt responsibilities at the end of the month,” says Calvin Ndlovu, head of operations, FNB Home Loans. Around 30% of FNB Home Loans customers are paid early

in December. To help consumers manage their cash flow, the division is running early debit orders in accordance with the early paydays of South African corporates. Ndlovu says there is an 80% higher chance of customers missing a January repayment, once they have failed to repay December. “We have seen a strong correlation between missing the December payment and the risk of also failing to pay January’s instalment,” says Ndlovu. “This knock-on effect occurs as consumers are faced with having two bond repayments due in one month, as well as additional expenses such as school fees among other regular financial commitments.”

Water restrictions when renting

A

s natural phenomena such as a drought cannot be predicted, a wise solution is to get expert opinion on how to handle the lease agreement in light of the current Western Cape water restrictions. “If a signed lease stipulates that a tenant has the enjoyment of an irrigation system and the landlord provides garden maintenance, then it is the landlord’s responsibility to make alternate arrangements,” says Natalie Muller, regional head of rentals, Jawitz Properties Western Cape. A tenant might be expected to water the garden with a bucket or watering can only, as per the restrictions. This may not be convenient,

particularly if they were expecting to have an irrigation system. “Should it be objectively impossible for the landlord to provide the service, or at least meet the obligation as per the lease agreement due to the restriction, he cannot be forced to comply with the lease and break the law in the process. This is called supervening impossibility of performance and the specific clause in the contract dealing with this would fall away,” says Peter Mennen, client legal liaison, TPN Credit Bureau. You can renegotiate the terms of the lease agreement, in writing, to indicate that the garden is not the landlord’s responsibility or that some of the plants must be tended to, or that it is expected that the lawn may perish.

Cape Town holiday hot spots

BEST BEACHES: • Clifton beaches: for beach chic • Camps Bay: for people-watching and sundowners • Muizenberg: for surfing and family fun • Bloubergstrand: for adrenaline water sports • Noordhoek: for horse riding • Boulders Beach: for penguins and picnics

WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

A

s a holiday destination, Cape Town has it all: food, wine, beaches, beautiful scenery and a fantastic lifestyle, creating a thriving demand for holiday home rentals. With certain areas of the Mother City being true holiday hot spots, location is more important than ever if you’re planning to invest in a rental property. “We find that most requests from international visitors are for the Atlantic Seaboard – especially Clifton and Camps Bay,” says Helen Untiedt, co-founder, Perfect Hideaways. “For South African visitors anything on the coastline works. Most people want to have an ocean view and be able to walk with ease to the beach.” The False Bay coastline with its quaint seaside holiday feel is somewhere that families return to year after year, and the Western Seaboard is another popular area, especially for watersports enthusiasts. While

the peak summer season shows the greatest demand, Cape Town works well as a year-round destination. “The biggest spend comes from our international clients and this is usually over the peak period, with bookings of up to three weeks in large homes on the Atlantic Seaboard. Local clients tend to travel all year, so while the spend may be less, it keeps going through all the seasons,” says Helen. The design, style and character of the property are also big factors at the top end of the market where visitors are looking for a place that feels like home. A swimming pool is essential for most people, and good heating and an open fireplace make a property attractive for cosy winter holidays. “Our clients look for a beautiful space where they can spend time. Comfort is key and they want a really good location with access to the beach. Views, views and more views,” says Helen.

Mangata in Simon’s Town The Foodbarn in Noordhoek Nobu at One&Only V&A Waterfront Homespun in Bloubergstrand

THINGS TO DO:

Our clients love beachfront homes. Scarborough, Simon’s Town, Noordhoek and Kalk Bay all work well for South African visitors. We do find that the quality of accommodation is vital, and clients are fussy in the style and comfort factor.

• Explore shops and boutiques in Kalk Bay. • Browse crafts and designs at the The Watershed at the V&A Waterfront. • Watch a movie under the stars at The Galileo Open Air Cinema. • Walk the Kirstenbosch Boomslang tree canopy walkway. • Enjoy sundowners in Bloubergstrand with a view of Table Mountain.

HELEN UNTIEDT, CO-FOUNDER, PERFECT HIDEAWAYS

Agent commentary Q: Who typically chooses False Bay for holiday rentals and what do they look for? A: The popularity of False Bay does not only attract holiday-makers from SA, but many international visitors also show interest and they return to False Bay on a regular basis. These visitors vary from couples to large families as False Bay caters for everyone and offers beaches, popular restaurants, hiking trails and historical monuments without having to travel too far. The average daily rental rate ranges from R650 upwards depending on the accommodation, location, and length of stay. Over the December/January period (school holidays), visitors either come from Gauteng or KwaZulu-Natal and stay for a maximum of 10 days.

Q: What types of property are most in demand for holiday rentals in Camps Bay? A: Camps Bay is one of Cape Town’s most sought-after tourist destinations and it’s not hard to see why. The spectacular scenery, bustling environment and pristine beaches encompass holiday living at its finest. Located in one of the world’s most beautiful and trendy cities, it boasts one of the largest untouched beaches in Cape Town. Visitors wishing to holiday in this area usually ask for a home with three en-suite bedrooms and a swimming pool to escape the summer heat. Chic settings with uninterrupted ocean views are also top on the list to create a relaxed, sophisticated holiday experience.

Q: What makes the Western Seaboard a popular choice for holiday rentals? A: It has some of the best beaches in Cape Town, with conditions that appeal to adrenaline junkies and water sports enthusiasts wanting to do stand-up paddling and kitesurfing. The Rietvlei Dam is popular for windsurfing, canoeing and water-skiing. Canal Walk Shopping Centre is just 10 minutes away and the Durbanville Wine Route is on your doorstep. There are two golf courses in the area, and the Big Bay Waterfront precinct provides laid-back dining with views of Table Mountain, and a child-friendly play area. Most properties are located close to the beach, giving this popular area a holiday feel throughout the year.

Here physical and mental health don’t require trips to the gym, as the estate offers its own cycling/ jogging pathways and an abundance of nature in the immediate surrounds. The tip-top safety measures bring a new sense of freedom and comfort within your space.” The growth of this thriving community is evident, with around 3,000 people already calling Buh-Rein Estate home, and 1,422 of the total of 3,923 properties completed with another 260 properties currently under construction. The complexes on offer range from townhouses to apartments and freestanding homes, and each has its own distinct character and identity. People longing for that well-deserved lifestyle change – from urban living to semi-rural/semi-suburban living – or those looking for their first-time home or maybe a further investment to their existing property portfolio, have come to the right place. The lifestyle offerings which are to be enjoyed at Buh-Rein Estate include a conference centre, multipurpose sports field, outdoor gym with regular Boot Camp and Tag Rugby events, excellent multitier security, highspeed broadband internet as well as a planned Checkers shopping centre. The eagerly anticipated Bossa family restaurant with a kids’ play park and swimming pool like

no other also opened its doors this past week and the festive season started early. All of this is right on your doorstep leaving you with more time to do what you love. The high-quality, beautifully finished and value-for-money properties, together with the all-encompassing lifestyle, mean that Buh-Rein Estate is highly sought after. This in turn not only ensures very healthy capital growth on the property, but an above average rental income which makes this an ideal investment. It works like a double-edged sword, with above average capital growth on the actual property on the one side and an inflation-beating rental income on the other. A rewarding marriage between two key fundamentals. Buh-Rein Estate is a great place to discover, grow and prosper.
