hen Chef Theo Penati arrived in Cape Town last year, it was with the flavours of his hometown of Brianza in his heart and corn kernels from his garden in his pocket (to remind him of his roots in frugal North Italy where polenta is a staple). His family restaurant, Pierino Penati, was awarded a Michelin star under his father the year he was born and he grew up balancing the authenticity of down-to-earth Italian cooking with the innovation and creativity that earn those coveted stars.
A summer-light basil risotto from his grandfather’s recipe made with
Carnaroli rice and intense aubergine ravioli sauced with hearty lamb ragu are Italian classics made to perfection with masterly simplicity and skill. By this time we were full, so we skipped the mains, but couldn’t resist dessert: silken fresh fruit sorbets and a deconstructed tiramisu that reinvents the classic with chocolate, espresso and creamy mascarpone. It’s Italian fine dining in touch with Theo’s roots but with skilful flourishes of imagination that delight the palate.
Now Capetonians can experience contemporary Italian food at Pierino Penati, upstairs at Villa 47 on Bree Street, where Theo works closely with his resident head chef Michelangelo D’Oria to create new dishes and to adapt to his new clientele. “When you change customers, you modify a little. Customers in Cape Town want stronger tastes, more salt. You have to balance and understand the ingredients.” We were welcomed with prosecco with crème de pêche and an amuse-bouche of deeply savoury Mondeghili meatballs. Theo is a natural storyteller and each dish is inspired by philosophy and his personal journey. The eye-pleasing Vertical Salad, piled high in a Parmesan and Emmental crisp tower, links his home vegetable garden with his arrival in Cape Town, its city high-rises and sunshine. role in many Italian dishes but rarely stars. The egg is cooked to perfection, with runny yolk and set but still wobbly white, in a savoury Parmesan custard with ribbons of zucchini. It’s rich, unexpected but so satisfying. Chargrilled tender octopus pieces with velvet pea purée, zingy salt lemon and red wine jus celebrate the abundance of great wine and seafood he found here coming from landlocked Brianza.

S
ince its first departure in 2012, the Franschhoek Wine Tram has grown into one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Winelands.
“It took 10 years of battling bureaucracy for the owners, the Blyth family, to get permission for the first tram to run,” says Brett Garner, general manager, Franschhoek Wine Tram, who says the service launched with one 32-seater open-sided tram visiting just two wine estates on the outskirts of the village. Locals and visitors quickly fell in love with the new service, though. Today, the network has expanded to include 22 estates across six colour-coded routes, stretching from the upper reaches of the valley to as far afield as Glen Carlou and Babylonstoren. Aside from offering a unique perspective on this scenic corner of the Cape, the Franschhoek Wine
Tram also offers a trip back in time. The steel rails on which the trams run were first laid in 1904 to help farmers move fresh produce to market, and steam locomotives puffed their way into the valley right up to the 1970s. Along with the railway trams that run along 8km of track, tram-buses transport riders between farms with a hop-on-hop-off service that allows guests to spend as long as they like at each estate. Just don’t miss the last tram home! Last December saw another exciting evolution of the service, with the introduction of the first double-decker trams on the line. These 80-seater carriages will allow the Franschhoek Wine Tram to carry more than 120,000 passengers over the year, providing an enormous boost to the tourism offering of the Winelands. “There’s such enormous demand for the trams that we often sell tickets a year in advance,” says Brett. “We realised we needed bigger trams to accommodate everyone and to ensure there was always a seat on the tram for our guests.” Modelled on the trams run by the Blackpool Corporation Tramways in the early 1900s, the new locally built trams seat 78 passengers on flip-over benches, allowing travellers to enjoy the Winelands view in both directions. They even offer an outside balcony for spectacular vineyard views.
By design Enjoy a multisensory experience at this year's Design Indaba Conference and Festival WORDS: BELINDA MOUNTAIN

he Design Indaba Conference and Festival 2018 will be held at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town from 21–23 February, with simulcast versions of the conference taking place in Joburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Potchefstroom and Namibia. All events and speakers aim to “amaze, uplift and motivate delegates to find new ways in which to design a better world”. Ravi Naidoo, founder and MD, tells us more. Q: How will the Design Indaba 2018 be a multisensory experience? A: This year, we’re putting together an experience that you’ll be able to see, hear, feel and touch. Design Indaba has moved on from being just a conference – we’ve grown it into a festival that features not only top speakers, but also a food experience, an eclectic music event, exhibitions and an installation by prolific designer Morag Myerscough. You can walk outside onto the piazza to eat amazing food from the food trucks, watch films, listen to some of the continent’s most progressive musicians and then feast your eyes on the work of 40 of the country’s top emerging creatives. Q: What plans are you putting in place to conserve water during the event? A: We fully understand our
responsibility as event hosts and we’re working closely with Artscape and our suppliers to conserve water on every possible level. Naturally, we’ll be abiding by the city’s Level 6b water restrictions, but we’ll encourage everyone to go further. We’re also working with one of our speakers on a very poignant project about drought, but this is a surprise that will only be revealed at the event. Q: Food seems to be playing a big role in this year’s festival; tell us more about that. A: Food is one of the only truly multisensory experiences and it has the power to change our emotions, challenge perceptions and trigger memories. We have two amazing pop-up restaurants at our Nightscape evening experience – Bertus Basson will be bringing his South African food philosophy to the first of our exclusive pop-ups, and the second will feature the creative team of Third Culture Experiment. Studio H has curated our food truck experience, plus we’re pleased to have Spinach King, Darling Sweet, Hokey Poke, Mistress of Spices and Indian Foods, The Pizza Guy, Studio H’s own tuck shop and many more.

Bedroom makeover Create your ideal sanctuary on a small budget with these handy tips from a decorating expert WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

A
ccording to sisters Lisa and Alix Walker of Walker Girls Interiors, “When we decorate our own bedrooms, we have this great opportunity to create a personal space, but it’s important to get the basics specific to the space.” Alix gives us a few expert ideas on achieving the right mood and look on a small budget.
The walls
Alix says you should choose your colour palette. “I recommend neutral walls, so consider colours such as Landing, Light Stone and Dusted Moss. Add colour and personality with scatters, throws, wall art and wallpaper. Newly painted walls and ceilings are the best starting point and make a dramatic difference. Keep the ceiling white.” Another easy option is wallpapering a feature wall or focal point. As Alix says, “Wallpaper is a great feature, and with a growing range of affordable papers, this is worth considering. Paper the wall behind the bed, the cupboard doors or even the wall around the bedroom door. Strong geometrics, big botanic prints and metallic textured papers are trending.” Accessorising your wall can also make all the difference. “Mirrors are functional and an attractive way to dress walls. On a tight budget, scour second-hand dealers for great mirror options or buy an
Polk Sunday Times Neighbourhood Ad 15 February 2018 curves.indd 1
attractive picture frame and get a mirror cut to fit,” Alix says.
The bed
White linen is suggested for the bed as it’s fresh and washes well. An upholstered headboard is an inexpensive piece that you can use to add a block of colour and soften a bed. Alix says, “I try to incorporate a bench or narrow ottoman at the bed end, using the same fabric as the headboard. Use a plain, soft-touch fabric as these are well priced and durable. When it comes to scatters, I recommend two large 60cm X 60cm feather cushions. Current fabric trends are foliage, geometrics and floral, gold and dusty pinks – they introduce warmth to any space.”
Alix likes having different sidetables in a bedroom. She suggests painting an old pedestal and replacing all the handles as a way to stretch your spend. “Use soft colours such as Decide or Bleached Meadow. If you have bedside lamps, get new shades made – an oval-shaped shade is great for small pedestals. Lamp bases don’t have to match – I try to look for taller lamps, as they’re better for reading.”
Accessories
For summer, keep your throw light – cotton or linen are great options.
Alix suggests investing in attractive wall hooks. “Use them to hang up pretty scarves, bags, hats and coats – it’s a great way to add colour and interest to the room. On your dressing table, get some baskets and ceramic bowls to hold hair ties, costume jewellery and so on. For a feminine touch, stand your toiletries on a vintage tray.”
Furniture
Floors and windows
“A small bedroom chair is on my musthave list,” says Alix. “You can pick these up at auctions and vintage shops, revive and recover them on a budget. A dresser, chest of drawers, or even a narrow server make great additions to any bedroom. Hang a large mirror above them to create a dressing table look. If space is limited, replace one bedside pedestal with a small desk or console table. This has multiple functions if you hang a mirror above, use it as a dressing table and still have your bedside lamp.”
Adding carpets to your floor is an attractive way to add colour and soften the room. Alix says she often finds great used carpets at reasonable prices. “The 180cm X 230cm size is ideal for smaller bedrooms. Windows can be costly to curtain. If you have small windows, Roman blinds are a good option. I enjoy curtains as they soften a room. The recent influx of beautiful, affordable sheer fabrics has meant you can afford to replace old curtains.”

londolozi Hempe sees design as a uniform language to be explored. Having qualified as an architect, he marries furniture with interiors and architectural design in a variety of innovative projects. Thursday market help keep it alive. From an urban planning point of view, I love that the city is not taken over by huge skyscrapers creating dark alleyways. There are always sunny spots for people to hang out in, so the City Bowl area feels very humane from an architectural standpoint. The old-style architecture in the city is also a pleasure to appreciate.”
As an architect, Mlondolozi sees the city from a unique perspective. “I love St Georges Mall for its in between condition and sense of humanness; it’s one of my favourite thoroughfares when walking and the vendors and the
Mlondolozi says he’d like to see more affordable housing within the city centre. This is something he’s passionate about, so much so that he presented a paper titled Integrated Living in a Post-Apartheid State at the World Architects Congress in South Korea last year. “A simple start would be mixed-income housing, bringing opportunities to a wider range of people who would love to live in the city but can’t afford to,” he says. “We must look at how we develop future cities into more inclusive places, for more holistic and sustainable economic growth. The city holds a lot of potential for young people to meet and connect,
“I have designed my everyday life around a 1km radius perimeter,” he says. “Everything is a walk away: my work, studio and favourite hangouts. I enjoy walking, and it does make my life easier. I don’t own a car, so I Uber to places that are beyond my perimeter. Plus, stepping outside my apartment block on a Saturday and seeing people enjoy the Company’s Garden is always refreshing.”
ABOUT MLONDOLOZI HEMPE: A renowned architect, Mlondolozi Hempe is also a furniture designer and curator who works on a diverse range of projects that benefit from his understanding of space and products. He consults on sustainability for a green building company and is currently designing for Focus Africa, a group exhibition in Milan in March. umongoo.co.za

Neighbourhood gems The walkable nature of the city appeals to Mlondolozi, and he welcomes events that make the most of that. “City Walk Saturdays by the Cape Town Partnership were always fun, seeing ordinary people creating art, activities and events.” Nowadays he finds First Thursdays too packed for the original intention of viewing art and design. “But it’s good for spotting spaces and places to visit when it’s less busy,” he says. One public art project he suggests looking out for is the Arch for Arch tribute to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu close to the Company’s Garden and Church Square.

His favourite neighbourhood eatery is Hudsons, The Burger Joint, but he also enjoys trying different places. “Mesopotamia, the Kurdish restaurant, is a gem. Perfect Sunday “A perfect Sunday for me is waking up and walking to the gym for a quick workout, followed by a jog around the Company’s Garden, breakfast at the Euro Haus Bakery and then some solo time at home having a light work session to prepare for the week ahead. I enjoy cooking every once in a while, so having dinner at home gives me some time to myself. After that I’d take a stroll up Kloof Street for an afternoon catch-up session with mates at Yours Truly, then a late supper at Hudsons.”
