Human Rights Day
An ode to wellness
W
ednesday, 21 March, is Human Rights Day – a day when we remember the tragic Sharpeville massacre and also celebrate our constitution, reflect on what we’re most grateful for and spend quality time with friends and family. Here’s how the Neighbourhood team will be spending the day.
The Healing Hub at Lourensford is a calming, rejuvenating escape from the city WORDS: CATHERINE BLACK

ven just driving through the gates of Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West is relaxing, with its pristine mountain views, vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, clean air and the sound of birds flitting around the newly landscaped gardens. But as of December 2017, Lourensford is much more than just a place to enjoy the delights of a working wine farm – it’s now also a place of healing.

The newest addition to the Lourensford estate’s facilities, the Healing Hub and Life Retreat was started by Dr Mothomang Diaho and Nthabiseng Shongwe and Patricia and Samantha Taylor, two strong, highly qualified and dynamic mother-and-daughter teams who live and breathe the hub’s ethos of authentic, holistic healing and wellness using a natural approach.

The Healing Hub contains several different elements. The movement studio is located within the beautiful estate grounds and is all about experiencing body, mind, movement and breath in a spectacular natural setting. Classes include yoga, Pilates, Nia dancing, Zumba, tai chi, ballet barre and meditation. The yoga classes are becoming especially popular, and it’s no wonder why – they’re often held outside on the estate lawns under the calming view of the Helderberg mountain range. There are also family classes on weekends where the kids and parents can get involved. On the healing side, the hub’s Spiral Aloe Medical Spa is much more than just a place to be pampered with massages, facials, waxes or manis and pedis. It’s also a registered medical practice offering a host of therapeutic
treatments that incorporate various healing modalities, such as functional medicine, emotional recovery, Chinese medicine, iridology, homeopathy, hypnotherapy and psychology. Beyond this, Lourensford has expanded its coffee shop and also has an art gallery, a lifestyle shop selling proudly local products, guided hikes, clay pigeon shooting up in the hills and wine and chocolate pairings. On weekends, the Lourensford Market buzzes with families and locals enjoying the live music and stalls selling everything from handcrafted household items to freshly made meals. With all this on offer, Lourensford is the ideal destination to slow down and escape city life, whether that means focusing on health, healing, movement or eating and drinking.
I plan to relax and unwind with a good novel

A Dash of sophistication Treat your palate at this delightful sanctuary above the V&A Waterfront WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED
A
rriving at the Queen Victoria Hotel for dinner at Dash Restaurant and Bar is like entering another world. A hidden enclave of boutique hotels, including the historic stone buildings of the Dock House Boutique Hotel and Spa, is raised above the bustle of the V&A Waterfront. There’s no passing foot traffic, just parking reserved for guests and a uniformed doorman to welcome you. Inside the hotel, Dash is a surprisingly intimate space with sophisticated decor: black marble, original art on the walls, plush furnishings and live piano
music. Tall windows give glimpses of Table Mountain, with The Silo Hotel reflecting the setting sun. It’s a soothing and polished background, not somewhere for a casual dinner, more a place for when you’re dressed to impress and want a quiet date night away from the city bustle. Chef Albert Bronkhorst took over the kitchens at Dash at the beginning of the season and has created a lively summer menu, introducing a twist of Asian elements to a classical French approach. For elegance that lives up to the surroundings, ask for the chef’s tasting menu: his pick of the menu with wine pairings from Creation Wines. Visiting mid-week, we went for the simpler option, eating from the à la carte menu with complimentary amuse bouche and palate cleanser. The mushroom port soup came highly recommended – a clear mushroom broth poured at the table over several elements, from pickled mushrooms to a deep mushroom purée. The spiced tuna loin was exactly that: thick sesamecrusted tuna slices with a heatwave of wasabi concealed in the avo purée and some fresh raspberries, cucumber and soy-lime dressing to cool it down. A pleasing palate cleanser of cucumber and ginger was the perfect interlude before our mains arrived – generous platefuls, so there was no fear of going away hungry! A wedge of seared salmon came on a mound of saffron mash, with roasted fennel and mussels topped with tomato. The chermoula lamb Wellington was beautifully pink in its casing of pastry lined with mushroom duxelle, rich braised red cabbage, crunchy asparagus spears and bearnaise sauce to complete the dish. Chocoholics should save room for the decadent chocolate mousse, beautifully dark and rich, with a fresh berry sorbet. Ask for two spoons as there’s more than enough to share.
t was love that brought brewmaster Fraser Crighton to the Overberg village of Struisbaai. His girlfriend Marile had had enough of drizzly grey English days and wanted to go home. Come along, or I’m going alone, was the ultimatum. He did the clever thing and packed his bags. Trained in the UK as a winemaker, Fraser had been dabbling in home brewing for some time. “I loved the fact that beer didn’t have any of the rules and boundaries of wine. Plus, it’s a bit quicker to turn around!” The African sun will make any Englishman thirsty, so in 2010 he started his own microbrewery in Struisbaai and Fraser’s Folly was born. Perhaps the name was a mistake, though. Far from being a folly, Fraser’s beer quickly grew a following. One fan was Dirk Human, owner and winemaker of Black Oystercatcher estate near the Overberg village of Elim. The two chatted, shook on a deal and in 2016 Fraser’s Folly set up a shiny new brewhouse at the award-winning winery. Today, it’s another delicious string to the Black Oystercatcher bow. Alongside the restaurant serving country-casual cuisine, the beer
tasting flights show Fraser’s considerable skills in the brewery. The core range of five craft beers includes a refreshing Pilsner and fragrant Weizen, but it’s in the ales where things get really interesting. Fraser’s first foray into the world of brewing was the Pale Ale, and his current release is simply superb. “It’s based on an English bitter, but made with South African and American hops, and British malts from Thomas Fawcett in Yorkshire, the oldest family-run maltings in the world,” says Fraser. Equally good is the India Pale Ale, with plenty of bitterness balanced by pungent tropical fruit notes on the nose. IPA fans will love it, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. Neither is the quirky Moer Koffie Stout: each batch is brewed with 10kg of Beaver Creek Coffee, grown near Port Edward in KwaZuluNatal, delivering a nose of coffee, caramel and dark chocolate notes. It’s unusual yet delicious. Pair it with a hearty stew or drink it for dessert. It’s an experiment that could easily have gone wrong. But as Fraser learnt eight years ago, sometimes even the boldest follies turn out just fine.

My business neighbourhood Ska Clothing brings a rainbow splash of colourful fashion to Sea Point WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED
S
ka Clothing’s creative, colourful fashion has long been synonymous with the outdoor party scene, and its six Cape Town stores are the go-to places for anyone wanting a splash of colour and hippy individuality in their lives. Founder Meezraci Zion tells us about the latest store in Sea Point’s Regent Road. Q: How did your business start? A: I travelled the globe for years and grew to love the tribal richness found in the Far East and South America, as well as the colourful earthiness of gypsy traders in Europe, all of which contributed to Ska’s birth in Cape Town in 1997. We started selling crazy hats and handmade jewellery on Green Market Square and then at many festivals. Our first shop opened in Long Street 17 years ago and we built up a reputation for individual handmade designs, some imported from the East, others by local
designers, with unique styles, hand-loomed cotton, beautiful embroidery or just outstanding colours and patterns. Over the years we’ve gradually grown, starting off with pop-up shops in malls like Cavendish Square. Now we’ve just opened our sixth permanent store in Cape Town. Q: Why did you choose this area for your new store? A: We love the seaside vibe; there’s a melting pot of people there who appreciate our fun, unique, laidback, hippy style. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We went out scouting one day and saw a small tailor shop to rent, in a prime location in Regent Road. When we called the agent, he immediately told us that the shop was actually much larger but was blocked by a dry-wall at the time. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: They’re the right size and location, there are many tourists and holiday-makers in the area and Regent Road is a busy walking street with many individual shops and eateries and a happening vibe. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Our neighbours are Cutting It Fine, a hairdresser; a plant nursery; a print shop; and Myth, a decor shop. Then along the road there’s also the Mojo Market.
Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: The rental in this area is between R200/m2 and R300/m2. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: A round 50 people per day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Stellenbosch and Somerset West would be the next areas that we’d look at – we had a pop-up shop in Somerset West that gained a lot of interest. We’d love to open a shop in Joburg again, but no one on our current team wants to move, so that would depend on finding the right person there. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, you can shop through our website and we deliver nationally. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: It’s difficult to say, we have many popular items and such a diverse clientele, all looking for unique items. But our money belts, hemp hats and Ohm scarves are all firm favourites.

Plumstead Chef Peter Tempelhoff tells us about his neighbourhood WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED, NAZREEN ESSACK & GOOGLE MAPS

E
xecutive chef Peter Tempelhoff moved to Plumstead in 2008 – the same year he joined The Liz McGrath Collection, where he heads up four restaurants in three Relais and Châteaux member hotels. Closest to his home is the Greenhouse at Cellars-Hohenort in Constantia, which was the Eat Out Restaurant of the Year in 2011 and has remained in the top 10 under his guidance. “Plumstead is an up-and-coming gem in the Southern Suburbs. ‘Gem’ might
be romanticising it a bit, there’s room for improvement, but for us it’s ideal,” says Peter. “There’s a strong sense of community – we know our neighbours and we’re grateful to have them. That means an awful lot to us as a family with the awkward hours I work.” Peter also appreciates the central location. “You can zip into town in 20 minutes on the M5, nip to Muizenberg Beach for a quick surf or fishing.” The Constantia Valley, with its variety of vineyards, beckons on
a lazy Sunday afternoon for lunch at one of the many award-winning wine estates, he says. “Living here really makes it seem as if everything is just up the road.”
Home sweet home Affordability was what brought Peter to Plumstead. “You can still find really good deals in Plumstead. We bought our first house 10 years ago and managed a tidy profit four years later by just refitting the bathroom, making cosmetic changes to the kitchen and living room, as well as some minor garden improvements. Our current house has two storeys, with loads of character, wooden floors and high ceilings, and it’s situated in a lovely, older part of the suburb.” These older pockets are sought after for their charm and character, with an eclectic mix of Victorian houses, Cape Dutch beauties, Art Deco homes and modern designs, he says. “On a Sunday, we sometimes go for a long stroll through the streets just looking at gardens, houses and, if we’re lucky, a show house – some people have great ideas. We normally end up at the Cricket Oval where the dog can run around while we play a bit of French cricket.” There are plenty of community events throughout the

Neighbourhood gems Getting out on foot or cycling is easy in Plumstead, says Peter. “We’re close to the greenbelt, which goes all the way through Constantia up to the base of Table Mountain at Cecilia Forest. It’s beautiful for off-road biking – that’s my best for relaxation.” The wide leafy streets of Plumstead are great for kids learning to cycle, as are the neighbourhood municipal parks, such as Lympleigh Road Park. “It’s got a cycling/walking track around it and you can do five or six laps while
7
the kids play inside the track on the jungle gyms among the trees.” There may be award-winning restaurants in the neighbouring suburbs, but Peter says he enjoys visiting some local favourites for casual family dining. “My favourite takeaway pizza is from Eat Out of the Box and has an awesome thin crust. Plumstead Fisheries does great fish and chips. High Tea is great for breakfast and Pirates Steakhouse has been listed as one of the best in the country.”
Perfect Sunday “My idea of a great Sunday is taking a walk through the greenbelt up to Klein Constantia, with the kids and dog in tow. I’d maybe squeeze in some wine tasting, a bite to eat further on at Peddlars or finish with a simple family braai at home.”
ABOUT PETER TEMPELHOFF: Executive chef at The Liz McGrath Collection since 2008, Peter Tempelhoff earned the Greenhouse at CellarsHohenort a regular place in the Eat Out Top 10 list and has won numerous awards throughout his career. At the heart of his food philosophy lies the continuous exploration and reimagination of South African food.
EAT: • Plumstead Fisheries: for great fish and chips • Eat Out of the Box: for takeaway pizza • High Tea: for great breakfasts • Pirates Steakhouse: for mouthwatering steaks • The Black Forest German Butchery and Deli: for braai meat • Chops Biltong: for delicious biltong
What we like about Plumstead is the value we get for the price of big older houses with large gardens. And it’s centrally located close to the M5 and the M3, all the good schools and the beach, not to mention the Constantia Valley, its restaurants and wine estates.
DO: • Explore the greenbelt’s off-road cycle track and make your way through to Constantia. • Visit the local park’s running track and kids’ playground. • Enjoy surfing and fishing at Muizenberg Beach. • Taste wine in the Constantia Valley. • Enjoy a braai at home.

Kid’s room makeover Breathing new life into a child’s room is a fun project that’s easy to do on a budget IMAGE: ISTOCK
Y
our child’s age is a good guide to what will work best in their room. Each child has different tastes, habits, likes and dislikes, so you need to incorporate those into their space. Involve them in decisions such as colours, characters from books or TV and sporting heroes. We chat with Michele Metior of M&M Design about what to keep in mind when giving the little one’s room a makeover.
Trends
Michele says that just as with everything, children’s rooms also go through trends, largely in colours, types of wood or even the style and brand of furniture. “But a child’s room is for the child, so take care it’s about him or her before fashion. Each room’s dimensions are different, so are each child’s needs, so marry the two carefully. Look at the room holistically before shopping piecemeal.”
Budget
Working on a budget isn’t difficult, it just requires more DIY. Comparing prices online and in stores can also uncover some differences.
WE BET
Paint is relatively inexpensive, so changing the colour of walls and furniture offers a dramatic facelift. Scouring second-hand stores and Facebook community sales groups for items which others no longer want, can lead to some great bargains. You could choose to keep the room’s shell simple and monochromatic, then add colour with bright framed posters, quotes, comic strips, wallpaper squares, a bold inexpensive carpet and a bed throw. The options are endless and the inspiration is everywhere.
Decorate for the future?
If you want the room’s decor to last through a few phases of the child’s development, make sure that the high-ticket items are neutral. Michele suggests practical furnishings and furniture. “You can find multifunctional pieces, which last from baby to adult: for example, a changing unit for a baby which can be dismantled and reassembled as a desk unit.”
Storage
Walls and floors
“The more practical the flooring, the better. Timber and vinyl are clean surfaces and can be spruced up with a washable rug,” says Michele.
For young children, Michele suggests easily identifiable storage spaces. “That way, they learn fast how, and where, to pack and unpack their own toys.” You can also choose storage spaces which will hold a little one’s toys today and a teen’s sporting goods in the future. “Baskets are great for that and so are shelves,” says Michele.
For walls, look at using washable paint, painting a wall with blackboard paint for play, using wallpaper on a feature wall, creating a mural or making your own design – something simple, like stripes or plain walls with stars, all you need is masking tape or stencils.
“Coat hooks are really handy – and there’s a wide range, from differentsized wooden ‘dots’ (in plywood or colour) to more industrial-looking ones (which are great when used with metal lockers) – and their functionality can move to school bags, uniforms and sports bags.”
