inter may be slow in drenching the Cape with much-needed rain, but when the cold fronts do arrive you’ll want to have a dram of uisge beatha, “the water of life”, in Scots Gaelic, close at hand. Make sure you have one of these delicious malts on the shelf.

A new addition to local shelves is Dewar’s 12-year-old. The first blended Scotch whisky to be branded and bottled traces its history back to 1846 and has had a Royal Warrant from

Another new arrival worth seeking out is this delicate single malt from Speyside distillery, Aultmore. Known colloquially as “A nip of the Buckie Road”, Aultmore is “a dram soughtafter for its gentle grassy notes,” says master distiller, Stephanie Macleod. “The malted barley used to make this whisky is entirely free from peat smoke, which ensures its exceptionally smooth and clean taste in which green, grassy notes abound.”
Looking for something special? Andy Watts, master distiller, James Sedgwick Distillery outside Wellington, last year released the world’s only single malt whisky finished in oak casks previously used for the maturation of proudly South African Pinotage. Made from a blend of grain and malt whiskies, you’ll find earthy notes and tropical fruit on the nose, with hints of banana and red berry on the palate. With only 3,500 bottles released each year, it’s not a cheap dram, but certainly a rarity worthy of any collector’s cupboard.

t doesn’t get much better than a winter getaway in the Winelands. So, when I was offered the opportunity to spend the weekend in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley, there was no way I could resist.
Avondale
There are plenty of amazing finds in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley, one of which is Avondale – our first stop. Avondale’s ethos Terra Est Vita (“soil is life”) can be clearly seen on the farm and in the wines. The perfect way to see this in action is to experience the Eco Wine Safari. As Johnathan Grieve, proprietor, Avondale, says, “Our Eco Wine Safaris were designed as a one-of-a-kind interactive experience that takes you behind the scenes to show you how we make our premium wines with Mother Nature’s approval.” Of course, you can’t stop at Avondale without heading to the Tasting Gallery to sample the seven handcrafted classic wines known as “Avondale’s Magnificent Collection”. The focus is on quality, rather than quantity, and the slow method of winemaking that gives the grapes all the time they need to develop.
Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis After a day of exploring and tasting wine, we checked in to the stunning Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis. “The prestigious Pearl Valley Golf Course at Val De Vie Estate saw the opportunity to enhance its overall master plan for the Super Estate by including a luxury hotel,” says Ian le Roux, general manager, Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis. There’s plenty to do during your stay at the hotel, with a myriad activities all within easy access of the hotel – from horse riding and wine tasting, to grabbing a bite to
eat and enjoying sundowners at the Polo Club Restaurant and so much more. You can even catch a polo match during the season (October to April).
Polo Club Restaurant
After settling into our room, it was time to head to Val de Vie Estate for dinner at the Polo Club Restaurant. Dish Food and Social has been partners with Val de Vie since 2013. The menu is a collaborative effort between Polo Club Restaurant chefs, Lisa Cilliers and Junior Mapika, and Dish Food and Social’s executive chef, Craig Backhouse. “As the only restaurant on a family-oriented luxury estate, we perform multiple roles. We aim to cover everything from a quick bite at lunchtime, to more sophisticated dinner plates one would pair with a great bottle of wine. Sunday morning’s polo brunch is popular, as are wind-down Fridays for families,” says Andrea Foulkes, owner, Dish Food and Social.
We went off menu and chose from the daily specials: beef pasta with rich red wine and Napoletana sauce, and the classic rib-eye steak – perfect winter meals. The next day, after a round of mashie golf at the estate and exploring the grounds, it was with heavy hearts that we headed back to the city after a weekend of wine, food and good company.

Kitchen trends Because of its function, the kitchen was always treated as a separate room, even when it was open plan. Today, however, it’s seen as a continuation of the house. WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

atasha Miller, director, MorleyMiller Design Intelligence, has been designing kitchens for more than 20 years. It’s her business to know what’s trending in kitchens worldwide, from designs, colours and textures, to new materials and smart technologies. One trend that Natasha doesn’t see going anywhere anytime soon is the kitchen as a light entertainment space for family and friends. “In South Africa, with our amazing weather, many homes are designed with the kitchen flowing into the dining room, then to an outside entertainment area. Who wants to be trapped in an enclosed kitchen if you could be watching your kids play outside, or have your friends sit at the counter while you cook up a storm?” With newer kitchen designs, you can get dinner ready while you help your children with their homework. “Today, the seating at the kitchen island is increasingly informal, more reflective of our lifestyles: the quick breakfast, a glass of wine and a chat, or a school project. Most families will sit at a dining-room table for dinner.”
Natasha says that if you’re about to have your kitchen redone, begin by describing your lifestyle. “Don’t be bullied by professionals who have a grand vision for your kitchen – it’s your space; you work in it. It needs to flow and function for you. But whatever you do, don’t compromise on the quality of your hardware. “For floors, clients are still choosing oversized, light-coloured tiles which flow through the entire house – it gives the illusion of space. Grey and white are still the favoured kitchen colour, but I believe that’s gradually changing. For cupboards, most new buildings have a very unfussy, streamlined look, with slim, thinner contouring, plain and handleless doors, but if you’re renovating, the choice is often more traditional like shaker doors.” Natasha says the wide range of countertops has made designing fun and more about creating textures. “We combine different thicknesses and colours of Caesarstone and neolith.” Overall, kitchens are still very minimalistic, but Natasha says instead
of that equating to sterility, clients are becoming more adventurous. “They add artwork or souvenirs from their travels – this brings a personal aspect into the space, which makes it feel like home.” Lighting is very important for both function and mood. “We’re seeing lots of LED lighting under wall units for soft mood lighting and beautiful or really funky pendant lights in various exciting materials like copper or various wood grain over the island.” Dedicated tea and coffee stations are also becoming increasingly popular. Clients are also finding clever ways of hiding small appliances. A large cupboard with pocket doors which can be closed can hide the kettle, toaster or food processor. Clutter-free worktops also increase the workspace and are always visually appealing. For smart kitchens, Natasha says clients are increasingly choosing appliances that can be controlled remotely, such as Bluetooth phone chargers in counters and extractors that can change colour and play music.

awyer, Sumaiya De’Mar, is a fashion law pioneer offering specialist legal services tailored to the fashion industry to help designers protect their brands and businesses. She was based in Green Point until she decided to move to Gordon’s Bay a few months ago. “A friend suggested looking at Harbour Island in Gordon’s Bay and I fell in love with it at first sight,” says Sumaiya. “There’s something magical about being surrounded by water and having seals on your doorstep.”

peak traffic times, so it takes me about 45 minutes to an hour.” In her free time, she enjoys exploring her neighbourhood. “I love walking along Bikini Beach and taking long drives up the mountains. There are also some fantastic restaurants, boutiques and art galleries in the area. Bertie’s Moorings, which is situated at the waterfront in Harbour Island, has great food and live music on the weekends. For a fine dining experience, there’s the Krystal Restaurant, which also overlooks the marina.”
The waterfront development blends into the rest of the town of Gordon’s Bay with a series of marinas and islands close to the end of Bikini Beach. “Being surrounded by water has a serene effect on the soul,” she says. “It soothes and calms the senses, which allows inspiration to seep in. This helps me focus on my work and stay motivated.”
Gordon’s Bay has everything you need in the way of shopping – there’s Somerset Mall nearby and the Cape Winelands area is within easy reach. “My favourite discovery thus far has definitely been the art and crafts exhibition on the first Sunday of every month at the Ndiza Gallery at the Krystal Beach Hotel, where one can purchase some unique items including paintings, sculptures and jewellery.”
Working from home gave Sumaiya the flexibility to move to this inspiring new home, but she loves that it’s still close enough to be able to drive into the city a few times a week. “I commute into Cape Town often, which I find to be quite an enjoyable drive. I try not to go at
When asked if there’s anything she misses about living in Cape Town, Sumaiya says, “It’s a double-edged sword for me. I miss the nightlife of central Cape Town and the buzz of Kloof Street. At the same time, I’m enjoying being away from the noise and I find peace in the silence.”

he name Matsidiso comes from Sotho meaning comfort or blessings, and this is exactly what these handcrafted shoes promise: unmatched comfort from the quality materials used and the artisanal skill of the shoemakers. Through the business, owners Jinae and Christiaan Heyns are able to give back to the makers and the local community. Jinae tells us more about the business. Q: How did your business start? A: The story started three years ago when I met my now husband – a South African, I am American – in South Korea. When we moved to South Africa together, I ended up helping his mother with the digital marketing in her ballet dancewear manufacturing company, as digital marketing has been my background for the past seven years. However, I’m not really one to sit still. I love changing and challenging environments and fortunately, due to the family-run dynamic, my mother-in-law gave me the freedom to dabble in the
design of the dancewear and learn about the manufacturing process holistically. The idea to make street/ fashion shoes wasn’t really a new one within the company. However, there was no one to run with it. So, there I was, totally naive but incredibly passionate about design, and there sat this fantastic idea without any takers. I proposed that I would like to make this venture into a reality and my family put their trust and faith into me. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: My family’s factory, Turning Point Dance Suppliers, was here before we started Matsidiso. Q: How did you find your premises? A: My mother-in-law was based in Epping Industria 1 before moving to Epping 2 when they needed to expand their premises. Through word of mouth, she found her new location and there was space for Matsidiso. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: One of the major aspects that make Epping a great area for manufacturing is that there’s an abundance of suppliers for any kind of raw material that you can think of. This saves time, energy, and travel expenses related to sourcing materials and contributes to building long and lasting relationships. I really appreciate that our shoe last supplier is our next-door neighbour.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: The Truworths distribution centre is just a block away, Neopak and Lawn Star are also nearby. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area?
