t’s been a busy year for Andy Watts, master distiller at the James Sedgwick Distillery on the outskirts of Wellington. First he released the latest incarnation of his popular Three Ships 10-year-old single malt, especially interesting as it’s the first time he’s released it as a “vintage” malt, this year the 2005. He followed that up in October with a 15-year-old single malt that has been “finished” (the last stage of ageing) in oak barrels that had previously been filled with Pinotage. It is the first whisky in the world to use barrels carrying the character of this proudly South African grape, so it’s little surprise that demand has been high for the 3,500 bottles on the market. Best be quick if you want one for your collection.

Senior Sub-Editor: Mlungisi Mthembu Proofreader: Marana Brand Designer: Anja Bramley Group Online Editor: Lauren Joubert

The good news for both whisky connoisseurs and everyday drinkers alike is that the James Sedgwick Distillery, where Watts crafts both his Three Ships range and the awardwinning Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky, is now open to the public.

At the end of the guided tour through the distillery, visitors discover the fruits of all that labour, with a tutored tasting of three whiskies, alongside five tapasstyle dishes to show the potential of food-and-whisky pairings.

The tour begins with a whisky-cocktail and video introducing the rich history of uisge beatha, the “water of life”. Wellinformed guides then lead guests on a walking tour of the historic 130-yearold distillery, following the process from malted barley and grain being mashed and fermented, through to distillation in striking copper pot stills and ageing patiently in oak barrels. Remarkably, at any one time the James Sedgwick Distillery has around 150,000 whisky-filled oak barrels quietly set aside for future releases.

As the only commercial whisky distillery in Africa, it’s a rare opportunity to glimpse behind the scenes to discover how the liquid flowing through mash tuns, pot stills and the spirit safe eventually end up in your whisky tumbler. Guided tours accommodate just 10 guests at a time, and are offered only on Fridays and Saturdays at 10am and 2pm. Also look out for limited release whiskies, often only available for purchase at the distillery.

Are you in need of some real restoration? WORDS: CLAIRE BARNARDO

I

t’s almost the end of the year which means one thing for certain: I am tired. You know that achy exhaustion you get from working non-stop throughout the year? I’ve had it lingering for a while now. That’s until I decided it was time to stop and dedicate an afternoon to de-stressing at Jiva Grande Spa in the Taj Hotel.

Something old, M something new A gentle facelift at La Petite Ferme mixes old favourites with the curated new WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: KIT HEATHCOCK & SUPPLIED

any Capetonians have fond childhood memories of relaxed Sunday drives up to the top of the Franschhoek Valley to lunch at La Petite Ferme, back when it was a small, family-run farm restaurant, before its vines were planted. In addition to being a prestigious restaurant, La Petite Ferme is now a boutique wine estate with luxury accommodation. However, its unpretentious warm welcome remains the same and favourite dishes from the old days are still on the menu. A recent makeover added a subtle veneer of contemporary decor, and as always the incredible views down the valley draw the eye, making you want to linger long after the last trace of dessert has been scraped from your plate. Kids can play on the lawns while parents enjoy the estate’s citrus fresh Sauvignon Blanc, in no hurry to head back down the valley to everyday life. Most of the staff have been here for years, giving a sense of continuity with stories of the early days. Head waitress, Estie Williams, recalls the fire that burned down the restaurant buildings in 1996, leaving only the winery standing. “We all came in in our gumboots and started rebuilding it ourselves, everyone from front of house staff to cooks. Within four months we’d got it rebuilt and reopened!” Rethinking the menu for the new season with plenty of fresh inspiration, chefs Neethling du Toit and Tanya Rousseau have kept the best of the old. The trout with the lightest of lemony hollandaise, left whole with not a bone remaining (how they do that is a closely guarded secret), has been drawing customers back for years. There’s a delicate new vegetarian cauliflower and truffle combo with wild mushrooms and a grating of pecorino cheese – a subtle amalgamation of flavours. Another old favourite, chicken rillettes with incredibly sweet caramelised onion is excellent comfort food for cold days, while the new addition of smoked ostrich carpaccio, rich with dabs of gorgonzola and tiny cubes of spanspek is designed for lazy summer days. To finish, a buttermilk panna cotta has a spritz of freshness from a basil granita and colourful strawberry sauce; and the much-loved avocado and coconut ice cream with caramelised banana purée is still a hit.

Jiva Spa’s location in the inner city makes it ideal for any busy person. I simply step away from the week’s frenetic pace and step into the glamorous Taj. The hotel is regal and luxurious – like the feeling of silk against the skin. It’s just a short elevator ride to where my journey of rejuvenation will begin. Jiva Spa offers traditional Indian wellness treatments in a stylish and serene setting. The spa draws its inspiration from ancient Indian healing wisdom of which the use of all natural products developed from Indian herbs, essential oils and special ingredients is key. The Jiva approach is based on the centuries-old wellness heritage of Indian culture, which is embraced to bring healing and nourishment to patrons. First is the foot bath blend. I dip my feet into a wide circular copper bowl filled with refreshing lime, rejuvenating ashwagandha, and tulsi which is known for bringing clarity to the mind. Having my feet bathed is instantly relaxing while also feeling spiritual and

humbling. The relaxation continues with a full body massage with more incredible herbs: rosewood for upliftment, kweda which enhances spirituality, and frankincense which evokes a feeling of calmness. For the facial massage the therapist uses mogra which is Indian jasmine, and the purest form I’ve ever smelled. The massage is complete indulgence and moves me deeper into a realm of escapism with each sequence, as she circulates the herbs and oils generously all over my body. It leaves me feeling like an Indian princess. My end of year resolution is to rejuvenate my body more often through holistic rituals like this.

Taj Cape Town received a stellar achievement recently as the only five-star luxury hotel to be awarded the 2016 Lilizela Tourism Award for Best in South Africa: Accommodation and Service Excellence. The award highlights excellence, creativity and innovation in the SA travel industry.

Secure your T home for the holidays

he end of year summer months present the perfect time to go away on holiday, and inasmuch as a holiday should be relaxing, we all feel the worry of leaving our home. Never fear, though; we have put together some tips and a checklist to not only keep your home safe, but also to relieve you of any worry while you’re relaxing away from home.

Find true peace and relaxation on your getaway when you take these steps to secure your home this summer WORDS: MOLLY FITZ-PATRICK IMAGES: ISTOCK

No one needs to know that you’ve left. If you can, pack discreetly with your garage closed. If you have timed lights, make use of them, otherwise keep a few outside lights on. Don’t overdo this, though, as lights blazing in the middle of the night can also look a bit suspicious. For extra peace of mind, get a neighbour or friend to help out. Ask them to occasionally check on your home if you’d prefer not to arrange a house-sitter. They also can collect your mail so it doesn’t build up. Don’t advertise your trip on social media – people have lived to regret this. Rather leave the posts for after the holiday instead of advertising that your house is empty. Test your home security system before departure. Some of us don’t use our alarm on a regular basis

and therefore may not have noticed that it does not send a signal to the local armed response company. This is also the ideal time to upgrade your security system, especially if you’ve had it for more than a few years. CHECKLIST: Hide all the tell-tale signs you’re away: • Pack discreetly. • Leave a few outside lights on or time some to come on when it gets dark. • Ask a neighbour/friend to check on the house occasionally and collect your mail. • Keep curtains/blinds as you would every day. Be sensible: • Test and/or upgrade your security system. • Let your local armed response company or police station know about your absence. • If possible, keep any expensive items out of sight. • Unplug any TVs, computers and so on in case of a power surge. • Lock all windows and doors and ensure that there are no keys in view of any possible intruders. • Switch on your security system. • Put the worry out of your mind and enjoy your holiday.

the Waterfront selling craft beer. It was the first time I’d come across craft beer. I fell in love with it and ended up staying there for three years. I studied how to brew beer and bought a home-brewing kit. When I started making beer, I met some other guys who were home-brewers including Richard Andrew, one of the founders of Brewers Co-op. I brewed a beer called Red Brick Shit House in collaboration with Richard, which was voted in the top 10 craft beers in the country at the 2015 SAB Craft Brewers Championship. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: Woodstock is semi-industrial, which works in our favour because brewing is permitted here, and it is residential, so we’ve got our customers on the spot.

L

ethu Tshabangu brews his Ukhamba Beerworx craft beers at the Brewer’s Co-op in Woodstock. The 16 members each have a beer on tap at the bar there and Lethu also sells to Beerhouse, Roeland Liquors and Tops. Q: How did your business start? A: I came to Cape Town in 2012 after working in events management in Joburg. I worked at Shimmy Beach Club, then got a job at a small bar in

Q: How did you find your premises? A: The founders of the co-op found the space. I didn’t join at the start, but when one member sold his share last January I bought in. At that time the co-op was discussing leasing out the bar, so three members and I took up the challenge. We’ve been running the bar for seven months now and things are getting busier. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: There’s enough space for a brewing room, cold room for storage of finished beer kegs, a fermentation room, and a goodsized front area for the bar. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: There are restaurants next to us with pizza and Mexican food, a good

7

combination as we don’t have to do food – we can focus on the beer. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Woodstock is getting more expensive. We split rent and costs between the bar and brewery, so now the bar subsidises the co-op and reduces the monthly member’s fees. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: There’s a regular crowd of people who work and live around here. People stay for happy hour after work – before 6pm you get a full pint for the price of a half pint. We’re busiest on Friday nights and Saturdays. It’s quite relaxed and communal. We want everyone to feel comfortable in the space for meetings, birthdays and gatherings. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: My Summer Session Saison is going to be sold on tap at Beerhouse on their summer menu, which is every brewer’s dream. The long-term plan and dream is to have my own brewery some day. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Just Facebook. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Pursuit of Hoppiness is my best beer, but people love the Saison, too.

BEST IN FOOD: • Homespun: for laid-back fine dining • The Indian Chapter: for authentic Indian food • Petits Fours: for cafe treats • Cafe Orca: for excellent seafood overlooking Melkbosstrand beach • Ons Huisie: for traditional West Coast flavours on the beach

About Western Seaboard holiday rentals WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

C

olourful kites swoop the length of Bloubergstrand on windy summer afternoons as kiteboarders speed across the waves. Cape Town’s Western Seaboard is a mecca for water sports. With standup paddle boarding, longboarding, and surf schools at Big Bay, there are water activities for everyone – from beginners to experts. The long stretches of beach with beautiful views across the bay to Table Mountain, and fresh sea air make it a fantastic holiday base with plenty of space to spread out. Families with younger children can find a sheltered bucket-and-spade beach out of the wind at Little Bay, with rock pools to explore in between. The flamingos and other birdlife on the vleis, wetlands and river lagoons that wind between Milnerton and Blouberg, are another attraction. Those who prefer flat water for windsurfing find their fun on Rietvlei. Stretched out between the Diep River lagoon and the beach is Milnerton Golf Club, which is

known as a challenging coastal course with stunning views and varied birdlife. Keen golfers find more worldclass golf at Atlantic Beach edged with fynbos and close to Melkbosstrand’s family-friendly Blue Flag beach.

THINGS TO DO: • Golf at Atlantic Beach and Milnerton Golf clubs • Kitesurfing along Blouberg beach • Windsurfing on Rietvlei • Surf lessons at Big Bay • Wine tasting in the Durbanville Valley

The laid-back surfer vibe lends itself more to casual cafes than fine dining, with a few exceptions. Visitors have endless scenic sundowner spots to choose from. They can gaze out over the bay to Robben Island and watch the sunset over pizza and beers at Blue Peter. The whole area is well connected to MyCiTi bus routes, and it’s an easy trip into the city centre for sightseeing. A similarly short drive takes you out into the Durbanville Wine Valley for leisurely wine tasting, good restaurants and even mountain biking on designated trails in the adjoining Tygerberg Nature Reserve. Then there’s the whole West Coast to explore beyond.

Guests of all ages love the location for its close proximity to the beaches, wine tastings, world-class restaurants, golf courses, shopping centres and easy access to road networks. Then, of course, there is the spectacular view of Table Mountain across the bay.

NATURE NEARBY: • Bird-watching at Rietvlei Nature Reserve • Hiking or mountain biking in the Tygerberg Nature Reserve • Whale watching from the beach in winter • Rock pools for small kids to explore

SONJA PETERS, GUEST HOUSE DU CAP

Agent commentary Q: What types of properties are most in demand for holiday rentals? A: Luxury self-catering accommodation on the beachfront (or within close proximity) with a view of Table Mountain and/ or the ocean, a swimming pool and good security with access control, generates the healthiest returns. The enquiries we receive are mainly for luxury selfcatering apartments with two bedrooms and two bathrooms in the Blouberg area, the average occupancy of which is 69% over a 12-month period. Three-bedroom apartments are also very po pular but, with the size-related increase in price, the demand tends to be seasonal. Short-term rentals not only provide superior return on investment, but the owner is also able to make use of the property when required.

Q: What attracts visitors to rent in the area? A: Affordable accommodation with easy access to long, unspoilt beaches, short drives into the winelands and countryside, and trips up the West Coast to great seafood restaurants, are some of the lifestyle attractions to renting on the Western Seaboard. Businesspeople find the location suitable for commuting to business destinations such as the CBD, Tygervalley and Claremont, as well as having two golf courses on their doorstep. For the adventurous, the lure is the fantastic summer kiteboarding, numerous hiking trails and mountain bike routes located on the Durbanville Valley wine farms, which not only offer wine tasting but also have restaurants to tantalise and satisfy the hungry after vigorous exercise.

Q: What kind of return can investors expect? A: Buyers of investment properties wanting to maximise the return need to be fully aware of the importance of location and occupancy rates when buying into apartment blocks. Holidaymakers are prepared to pay a premium for sea and Table Mountain views, access to all amenities, MyCiTi bus routes and shopping. The higher yields achieved during the holiday season (October – March), make holiday rentals a lucrative option allowing for maintenance projects to be carried out in the winter months. With the assistance of a property professional gross rental yields of between 8% and 10% are achievable.
