ith winter upon us, you may be tempted to sit on the couch, under a few blankets, and watch TV. But for those who’d like to get out of the house, here’s my pick of the best show happening in the city today.
Based on the life and career of Broadway star, film actress and comedienne, Fanny Brice, Funny Girl has received rave reviews since it opened in April at The Fugard Theatre. Singing beloved songs including People and Don’t Rain On My Parade, Ashleigh Harvey, as Fanny Brice, will enchant you in this not-to-be-missed extravaganza. goo.gl/u7HrlW

Did you know? Newlands is the wettest suburb in the country because of its high winter rainfall.
TOP THINGS TO DO IN THE CRAGS:
Robertson

Robertson may be best known for its wine, but mountain bike trails also draw visitors to the area. There are many different trails of varying difficulties. You can enjoy a casual ride or take part in one of the annual mountain bike races. • Ride an elephant at the Elephant Sanctuary. • Enjoy delectable food and stunning wine at the Bramon Wine Estate. • Visit the rescued primates at the Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary. • Experience the free-flight bird sanctuary, Birds of Eden. • Enjoy a guided wildlife tour at Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre.
The Crags in Plettenberg Bay is a popular destination on the route – you’re surrounded by nature and wildlife, and there’s no shortage of things to do. One of the best stops has to be the five-star Kurland Hotel. Known for its stellar polo grounds, it plays host to the Kurland International Polo Test every year, and it’s a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Surrounded by lush greenery, the Kurland Hotel offers peace and quiet – you hear the surrounding nature and very little else. We arrived not sure what to expect and were amazed by the old-world beauty of the hotel. The hotel’s decor is something to be admired. The furnishings were sourced from family heirlooms and objets d’art discovered at international fairs such as Maison et Objet in Paris and Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, and there’s been careful thought into the placement of each.
Out of the 12 suites (each individually decorated), we chose to spend the night in the superior external loft – complete with its own private pool. Once you’ve settled into your room you can explore the grounds of the hotel on horseback, bicycle or quad bike. You can enjoy a game of tennis, take a swim in the crystal-blue pool, or unwind at the luxury spa. The hotel also offers complimentary mid-afternoon tea/ coffee on the veranda where you can savour some freshly baked delights. The surrounding area also plays host to plenty of activities to keep the young and old entertained (check out my sidebar below for some ideas). There’s also a feast of great food to enjoy on the Garden Route. At the hotel you can enjoy delectable meals from executive chef Leon Coetzee – with the focus on rustic/ country food with French flair. The menu also places emphasis on fresh, organic produce and herbs and vegetable grown on the premises. With so much to see and do in The Crags, be sure to make the Kurland Hotel your next stop on the Garden Route.

El Burro
El Burro made a name for itself with its excellent Mexican food in Green Point, and the new branch in Dean Street continues the theme in style. The weekday lunch special is not to be missed, with highlights of the regular menu – tacos, ceviche or enchiladas – in lunch-sized portions for an incredible deal with one of the signature agua fresca or horchata drinks. I loved the build-your-own fish taco – fresh zesty battered chunks of linefish to cover with refried beans, guacamole and sour cream in two soft corn tortillas – plenty for lunch, especially if you want to leave room for the wicked churros with chocolate sauce afterwards.
De Wetshof Bon Vallon Chardonnay

Cellarmaster Peter Finlayson is passionate about Burgundian cultivars, and this iconic Chardonnay is one that should definitely be on your wine rack. Grapes are sourced from a high-altitude
It’s fast food with a healthy twist at this cheerful new burger joint in Dean Street. Everything, from the burger patties to the buns and the tomato sauce, is made from scratch and freshly cooked on site. The patties are made from pasture-reared beef, or a falafel-style patty for vegetarians. You can choose sweet potato fries or go bunless with a lettuce wrap. Unpretentious and full of flavour, the burgers make a satisfying lunch; the home-made buns are soft but substantial, and the patties, pickles and onion fillings are all that they should be – enough to convert a slow food devotee to the attractions of a handmade burger.

That was understandable in the bad old days of clumsy over-wooded Chardonnays tasting of oak more than grapes, but times have changed and South African cellars abound with world-class wines with finesse, elegance and a deft touch with the use of oak. International Chardonnay Day, on Thursday, 25 May, is the perfect time to rediscover this noble cultivar from Burgundy, and these four topnotch “Chards” won’t disappoint.
The alluring chocolate shop façade facing onto Main Street from the Dean Street Arcade conceals one of Newlands’s best kept secrets: that Le Delizie also serves the most amazing artisan gelato. It’s the perfect place to complete lunch with a flourish, and the hardest part is choosing just two flavours. Owner Massimo comes from a family of gelato-makers and continues the Italian tradition, his chocolate, coffee, stracciatella and hazelnut rivalling the best I tasted in Italy. There’s always at least one vegan sorbet on the blackboard menu and he and his wife, Adriana, also get creative with a display fridge of beautiful dessert cups and ice-cream cakes to take home for dinner parties.
This third-generation familyowned estate in the Breede River valley is known for its world-class Chardonnays, and the unwooded Bon Vallon is an excellent introduction to the range. Although the wine never sees the inside of a barrel, the bright fruit is balanced by some richness thanks to time spent on the lees (dead yeast cells left behind after fermentation). The 2016 deservedly picked up a gold medal at last year’s Veritas Awards.

vineyard beyond the Overberg village of Villiersdorp before being barrelfermented and matured on the lees. The result is a wine where fresh melon and green apple flavours perform on a stage of vanilla and subtle oak creaminess. A perfect match for poultry or creamy seafood dishes.
Neil Ellis Whitehall Chardonnay
Stellenbosch winemaker Neil Ellis has long focused on selecting grapes from the best vineyards across the Western Cape, and for the maiden release of his cool-climate Whitehall Chardonnay he turned to a single vineyard in the Elgin Valley. The 2015 vintage is made in an elegant Burgundian style, so expect freshness and minerality with well-integrated oak richness.
Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Chardonnay The new Leeu Passant range from Andrea and Chris Mullineux sees the pair dabble in non-Swartland vineyards for the first time. Their Stellenbosch Chardonnay is sourced from a single parcel on the Helderberg, and spent 12 months in oak to bring a long, structured palate to a wine with citrus zestiness. Keep it for a special occasion.

My business neighbourhood With a recording studio, retail store and training courses, Red Revenge in Bellville is a hub for DJs and music producers WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED
R
ed Revenge is the go-to place for specialised music services in Bellville. Owner Johan Schreuder, who performs as Conscious Chaos, tells us more about the business and the training courses offered. Q: How did your business start? A: I was the DJ for all school gatherings back in the day. After school I went to Israel where I DJed at the kibbutz nightclub until I moved to London. There I worked for Channel 4 who were producing a programme called The Big Breakfast. Planet 24 was owned by Sir Bob Geldof (who acted in the Pink Floyd: The Wall movie), and my then obsession with Pink Floyd, seeing the sound guys work in the studio, along with my love for DJing urged me to study sound engineering and music production. he experience of getting my T diploma shaped our Red Revenge Certified Courses. There was huge confusion with new students and parents about sound engineering and music production. So we
launched our Steinberg Certified Courses: eight weeks of hands-on intimate lessons with accomplished DJs and producers. We don’t do boring at Red Revenge. The aim is for the students to immediately start producing beats and make music, even from the first lesson. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: Bellville is known as Bellville RockCity, having produced bands like Fokofpolisiekar, Aking, Springbok Nude Girls, Jack Parow and many more. There’s a great need for old school vinyl DJs on this side of the world to further their skills, meet like-minded people and have the proper support and services for their equipment.
square metre. Bellville is one of the fastest-growing suburbs, so there's lots of new, fresh space available. Q: H ow many people go through your store each day? A: Our services are very specialised; it’s not your typical walk-in shop. Our bunker studio, due to the training, receives about 50 students and walk-ins per week. The retail shop is about the same. Q: D o you have any expansion plans? A: We’re busy expanding the bunker studio from 170m2 to 250m2, and we also merged with one of South Africa’s largest music retailers who’ll run the top shop from now on.
Q: How did you find your premises? A: We came across the premises while driving around the neighborhood.
Q: D o you operate online as well? A: Yes, we have an online store and we’re visible on social media.
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Our retail shop faces a very busy main road, Durban Road, and below that is Cape Town’s best-kept secret, our 170m2 bunker studio and training facilities where we can make as much noise as we want.
Q: What’s your most popular item? A: We sell more turntables than guitar strings. The vinyl revival has been very good to us, and being the only Technics SL1200 service centre in South Africa, we have an overflow of turntables streaming into the shop.
Q: Who are your neighbours? A: My good friends ORMS Bellville, and Bidvest Security. Q: What are the rentals like in this area? A: On par with the CBD, but you do find some really good deals per

Junk as a status symbol One person’s unwanted goods can be another person’s treasure when it comes to decorating your home WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK
E
xperts will tell you that there are a few things you need to do to secure your financial future: pay off your debt, like credit and store cards, and be frugal. For young people moving into a new home or apartment, furniture and appliances can be costly. Buying second-hand goods is a frugal and much greener option, and once you’ve given them your touch, they can be quirky and individual. With the range of paint colours and applications constantly coming onto the market, together with the global tsunami of creative ideas available, you can curate amazing spaces. Sarah von Bargen, who runs the “Yes and Yes” blog, has this interesting take: “Buying things on the cheap keeps me from getting too emotionally attached to stuff that is, ultimately, just stuff. It’s a lot easier to sell off your belongings and head to Russia when you found your sofa on the curb.” This doesn’t mean you accept everybody’s discarded goods. You’re going to curate, not purely populate,
so design and decorate as you would with new or customised furniture. Look at your blank rooms and spaces, and accurately measure them, so that when you’re out there, you can look for furniture or appliances that will fit into your space. Think design and scale, not colours and patterns. For couches, single chairs or ottomans, reupholstering is an affordable option. Shop around for a recommended upholsterer, check out fabric offcuts and scour factory shops for fabrics. You might even consider upholstering that armchair in a few different fabrics. If cleverly done, this can result in a beautiful artistic piece. Don’t rush your purchases, rather bide your time. You’ll find the right thing. If you don’t love it, and it doesn’t fit with your end-vision, don’t buy it. Aside from second-hand shops, car boot sales and markets, requests for items on various online sites and community Facebook pages often yield wonderful items at bargain prices. Appliances, too, can be bought
second-hand and given a new look. An old off-white fridge painted black or red, glossy or matt, can look great. Blackboard paint also works well for drawings, shopping lists and message boards, and avoids the magnetfestooned look. One creative person found vintage non-functioning fridges, gave one a vinyl cartoon wrap and stencilled designs on another to create interesting cupboards in the lounge. As always, wood can be stripped, sanded, stained, bleached or varnished. But painting it can be beautiful. Choose a range of colours, and paint each drawer of a chest a different colour. Keep the body unpainted, or stain it uniformly.
TOP TIP: Keep a thrift bag. Put every duplicate item, or an unloved one, into the bag and drop it off at a charity or thrift shop. Likewise, when you buy something, or bring home a new book, set another one free.

Final phase of Clara Anna Fontein getting snapped up
T
he second and final phase of The Village at Clara Anna Fontein in Durbanville, was launched on 11 May. Total sales to date have topped nearly R900m. Buyers snapped up 22 of the 69 separate title townhouses in Phase 2 of The Village at the launch, with six further sales in the offing and strong interest being shown in the remaining units, according to Mariska Auret, project manager, Rabie Property Group: the company developing Clara Anna Fontein in a joint venture with the landowner.
Colin Green, director, Rabie, says the launch follows the sale of more than 80% of the 57 homes in the first phase of The Village for a total of more than R200m as well as the near sell out of 334 single residential erven for a total of more than R680m. Construction of Phase 1 of The Village is under way with handovers and transfers to be phased from October this year through to March next year. Construction of Phase 2 of The Village is expected to get under way in the latter part of this year with transfers and handovers also taking place.

Demand in the Midrand residential property market continues to grow
W
hile house price growth in Gauteng has shown tentative signs of recovery in the last 12 months, the residential property market in the greater Midrand region has, in terms of demand, steadily continued its upward trajectory on the back of rapid development in the area. “As many commuters will have noticed, new businesses and office headquarters are constantly springing up along the N1 freeway,” says Rupert Finnemore, MD, Pam Golding Properties Gauteng. “It’s part of a remarkable process that is seeing Johannesburg and Pretoria merging into one vast mega-city, and Midrand is right in the middle of this. As well as offering investors a range of property options, catering from the first-time buyer through to the upper-end investor, homes in the region tend to be more affordable. In addition to offering a good standard of living, Midrand supports a highly diverse residential property market with something for everyone.”
According to Nadia Moosa, manager, Pam Golding Properties Midrand, an added attraction of Midrand is that it is centrally situated between Johannesburg and Pretoria, with three on-ramps and easy access to the N1 freeway. “With large numbers of businesses, commercial enterprises and office developments having been established in the area in recent years, Midrand is one of the most rapidly developing regions of Gauteng. This has encouraged investment across the board, which has, in turn, served to stimulate the residential property market in Midrand," says Moosa. “Sectional title townhouses, duplexes and apartments have been particularly popular in Midrand in recent years and numerous complexes and apartment blocks have consequently been built to keep up with demand. As a result, the majority of properties in the region are today held on a sectional title basis.”
Balwin delivers solid results
B
alwin Properties has announced its financial results for the year ended 28 February 2017. Balwin had 13 developments under construction during the period, and in line with its forecast, sold 2,711 apartments at an average selling price of R995,000 per unit. Revenue increased 30% to R2,7bn and gross margin remained on target at 37% in spite of an increase in construction-related costs. Profit for the period improved 18% to R661m. “We have delivered an excellent performance underpinned by our high quality, affordable product offering coupled with exceptional project cost management. The fact
that we operate in diverse locations across high-density urban nodes ensures the sustainability of our business and ability to create shareholder value,” says Steve Brookes, CEO and founder, Balwin. Balwin listed on 15 October 2015 and is differentiated from other JSE-listed property companies as its business strategy is underpinned by generating profits through the development and sale of large-scale residential estates between 500 and 1,000 units. Balwin puts its success down to a continuous development approach – selling 20 to 25 units per location per month in diverse locations in order to maintain price tension in the market as well retain artisanal expertise across sites.

Ceramicist Clementina van der Walt tells us about her neighbourhood WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
IMAGES: MARGARET WOERMANN, NADINE VAN DRIEL, ANTON SCHOLTZ AND ISTOCK
We love the convenience of being in the city centre, the proximity to so many amenities and the general urban buzz CLEMENTINA VAN DER WALT
W
ell-known studio potter Clementina van der Walt draws her inspiration from the patterns, colours and textures in urban and rural African landscapes. She has lived in the CBD with her partner, Albie Bailey, for about 10 years and they love the convenience of being in the city centre. “We were looking for something with an urban inner-city feel but still private enough not to be overwhelmed by the street action,” says Clementina. They found that in a complex off Long Street. “We love being able to walk out of the complex and immediately have a choice of restaurants, coffee shops and supermarkets.” Getting around is easy when you're already in the centre of town. “There’s a very efficient MyCiTi bus route and easy road/bus/taxi access to the Atlantic Seaboard, Woodstock and Southern Suburbs. We work in Woodstock, so we travel mainly against peak-hour traffic, which is very appealing.” This also helps with that other bugbear of CBD life: parking. “We don’t have off-street parking, so we often leave our car at work and Uber to town. Otherwise, we have a friendly relationship with several car guards and mostly we're lucky finding a spot.”
ABOUT CLEMENTINA VAN DER WALT: Ceramicist Clementina van der Walt has, over the last 40 years, lectured, run a production studio and held many one-person shows, with her work represented in national and international collections. She and her partner, Albie Bailey, run Clementina Ceramics Studio and a store in Woodstock and have a small studio and gallery outside Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo. clementina.co.za

Another thing she loves about the city is the people. “It’s very real – one encounters people from all walks of life in the street. Interesting people, sometimes some hustlers, but it’s part of it all. Thanks to the Cape Town City Improvement District (CCID) there’s a general presence of police officers, which makes for some sense of order and safety. The CCID also keeps the inner city very clean on a daily basis.” When asked about how they deal with the noise of Long Street and its clubs, Clementina says, “Initially we used earplugs, but now it’s like a background hum. We hardly notice it. Inner-city living is noisy; one gets used to it.” And there’s plenty of variety to the soundtrack of urban life. “Sometimes one can hear the call of the nearby mosques, and, on Sundays, church bells from the Lutheran Church and St George’s Cathedral. Due to the proximity of The Company’s Garden, there’s a sense of wildlife – one regularly hears birds and hadedahs, also the menacing urban pigeons!” The views of Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Signal Hill and the harbour are all part of what inspires her about living at the heart of Cape Town’s vibrant centre.
