’d like to tell you about an amazing organisation that needs your help. The EcoBrick Exchange is a “collaborative non-profit organisation set on nurturing a proactive attitude of practical recycling habits and education”. EcoBricks are thermally insulating “bricks” that are made by compressing unrecyclable plastic into 2L bottles. Through contributing towards this initiative, you not only help the environment but you also support a needy community, as the EcoBricks are used as the building blocks for preschools in underprivileged communities. Franschhoek escape kademie Street Boutique Hotel in Franschhoek feels like the gracious home of old family friends. With shelves full of books and a grand piano in the lounge and framed prints in the hall, the guesthouse takes you a century back in time. However, the old-fashioned country house charm is complemented by plenty of modern comforts and earned the venue the title of World’s Best Boutique Hotel 2017 at the World Boutique Hotel Awards. We were given Vreugde, a peaceful cottage with a private courtyard shaded by oak trees, its own access onto the quiet side street and a solarheated swimming pool that tempted us to jump in. It included antique furniture and a huge wrought-iron canopied bed with gorgeous linen,
soft pillows and downy duvet, which enfold you with understated luxury rather than designer glitz. The glorious brass bathtub was purely ornamental in the current drought, but the rain shower compensated well. And, in a way, I wished it was cold enough to need the cosy winter touches, such as underfloor heating, a wood-burning fireplace in the bedroom and even an outdoor wood-fired hot tub, conjuring images of still nights soaking in steaming water while watching the stars with a glass of bubbly in hand. The hospitality is generous. Once you’ve checked in, everything is included, from the half bottle of MCC, the miniatures and snacks in our kitchen fridge, to the pre-dinner cocktails and wine accompanied by live piano music,
and the nightcaps in the lounge when you return home from dinner. Board games are set out in the afternoons and breakfast is served here on cooler mornings. A lavish platter of every fresh fruit currently in season, crunchy homemade muesli, Greek yoghurt, stewed fruit and a jug of fruit smoothie started us off, then we went on to the cooked breakfast menu ranging from traditional bacon and eggs to avocado on toast and eggs Benedict. It was hard to leave and we felt we needed more than one night to explore Franschhoek and relax properly into this peaceful retreat. Luckily, Akademie Street is offering two nights for the price of one in May and August – the perfect excuse to escape to Franschhoek, catch up on one or two top restaurants and indulge.

hat better way is there to enjoy a glass of your favourite wine than while admiring the picturesque Cape Town landscape? We bring you three of our favourite wine bars with a view.

Decor(ous)
Situated on the – yup you guessed it – 14th floor of the Sun Square Hotel, this rooftop bar offers some of the best sunset views in the city centre, with vistas stretching from Kloof Nek to the harbour. Tsogo Sun’s regional sommelier Georgio Meletiou has put together a knockout wine list, with 14 bubblies, 14 reds and 14 whites. The focus is on approachable wines that won’t break the bank, but also look out for the handful of aged and auction wines on offer. The list changes regularly, making a repeat visit essential.

The Willaston Bar, Silo Hotel
THE WILLASTON BAR, THE SILO HOTEL
Named for the first grain ship to set sail from the grain silos now transformed into the city’s most talked about hotel and museum complex, The Willaston Bar in the luxe Silo Hotel is the perfect place for a romantic date night. It’s a stylish spot, and while the geometric windows show off superb sunset views over the city, the velvet sofas and teal barstools made of soft Italian leather will encourage you to settle in for the evening. Though the affable barmen shake up a fine Martini, the wine list is worth exploring. You’ll find an excellent selection of local and international estates here, with a globetrotting selection by the glass. Prices are higher than many other hotel bars, but the experience is worth the extra spend. No reservations are taken, so arrive early to get a good seat.
Harald’s Bar & Terrace, Park Inn by Radisson Cape Town Foreshore
HARALD’S BAR & TERRACE, PARK INN BY RADISSON CAPE TOWN FORESHORE
Hidden away down in the Foreshore, the Park Inn hotel is home to something that’s a bit of a local secret: Harald’s Bar & Terrace. Popular with local office workers for after-5pm drinks, this 11thfloor venue is more laid-back than most rooftop bars, with a well-priced menu and wine list to match. The wines are focused on larger estates, not hidden gems, but the pocket-friendly prices and great views make Harald’s well worth a visit. The menu of easy-going pub fare is equally well priced, making for a good end-of-the-month option.
Q: Which designers are you excited to see at this year’s event? A: One design team we’re very excited to announce is the talented Mariano Rossouw, who will be designing this year’s Decorex Designer Spotlight feature with a focus on the #rhythmoflife theme. We’re also looking forward to the work of Moorgas & Waldron Interiors, as well as Andrea Brand in the exciting new Design and Textile Elements features. Q: What are you looking forward to at the exhibition? A: I always look forward to the trend home feature, but there are really so many exciting new features, including Plascon’s incredible installation, the She Sheds, Rooms to Grow and the Tasting Room Wine Bar. Q: Tell us more about the “She Sheds” feature? A: While the “Man Cave” trend was really popular in past few years, we’ve seen the emergence of a more feminine version – the “She Shed”, the conversion of any traditional shed or unused home area into a woman’s space. Here, the woman of the home can relax or enjoy some time doing hobbies. It’s a space just for her. We’re excited to have Vanessa Haywood onboard for this feature, a leading South African actress who featured in the Oscarnominated film, District 9. Vanessa will lend her inspiration to the three chosen designers who’ve been tasked
with decorating three unique She Sheds. Each space will incorporate a touch of pink in support of the breast cancer awareness NGO, PinkDrive. There will be a donation box to encourage on-site donations and all Decorex members will wear a pink ribbon in support of the initiative. Q: Are there any specific trends you think will flow through the show this year? A: There are so many exciting trends working their way into the South African landscape, such as the Danish “hygge trend”, elevated organics (tactile, earthy materials being used in the home), as well as mixed metallics, jewel tones and room dividers. I particularly like the psychotropical trend, which emanates from the psychedelic movement and is defined by vibrant palettes, vivid tropical patterns and digitised prints, as well as lush, botanical themes which take on a nearsynthetic form, and motifs with a hallucinogenic quality.

My business neighbourhood F45 is a new form of high-intensity interval training, with the first South African studio in Camps Bay WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
IMAGES: SUPPLIED
C
ape Town-born Marc Train has brought the latest celebrity workout and fitness trend to South Africa. He tells us about his new F45 fitness studio in Camps Bay. Q: How did your business start? A: F45 began as a curated fitness programme developed by Sydneyborn Rob Deutsch for big names like Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicole Kidman. It amassed a cult following in Australia for its emphasis on results-driven, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and strong community appeal. The group came to South Africa in 2018, and we opened the first studio in Camps Bay in March. I ’m confident that the model is a perfect match for the South African culture. We’re a very active and health-conscious nation. This can be seen from the proliferation of gyms around the country and the rapid adoption of new ways of training. Cape Town has a wonderful fitness community,
which perfectly suits the F45 ethos of building a close-knit group of like-minded people. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I wanted a location in the Atlantic Seaboard, due to the nature of F45 and its focus on community engagement. There’s an outdoor culture here which we love and, by setting up shop in Camps Bay, we hope to tap into this through regular training and runs on the beach. It’s also the ideal location in an area without any direct competition. Q: How did you find your premises? A: Our first F45 franchise will be our flagship studio and we had a long list of criteria for the premises. Some friends in the broker industry knew of the studio space requirements and recommended the Camps Bay space to me. It immediately felt like the right fit. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he view sold us on the studio – it overlooks the beach and allows our members to workout in a picturesque setting. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Mediterranean restaurant Bilboa and rooftop cafe Chinchilla are wonderful neighbours who drive real foot traffic to the centre. The Bay Hotel also provides a fantastic opportunity for a strong partnership. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: We currently pay R300/m2. The
rental prices are relatively high in Camps Bay. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: F45 offers six classes a day with a maximum of 27 people per class – numbers are kept low to ensure maximum individual attention from trainers. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We want to expand nationally this year; plans are already in place for branches in Joburg and Durban. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: T he F45 app offers regular fitness challenges, meal plans and shopping lists for a holistic healthdriven experience. Our website also offers eating plans and our training schedules. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: F45 is based on HIIT, which is perfectly suited to today’s timeconstrained and health-conscious society. Our 45-minute training sessions are extremely popular as they easily slot into busy schedules and yield incredible results. We host regular global fitness challenges with the other F45 franchises around the world, and every Saturday we get a DJ in the studio to drop some beats for the special hour-long session.

The Ramaphosa effect on Cape Town property
A
ccording to Carl Nortje, MD, Rawson Developers, experienced operators in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs, 2018 sales of his company’s multiunit residential complexes have been brisk. For investors seeking a rental income, retirees, or upmarket university student accommodation, Rawson develops close to transport nodes and major facilities such as sports stadiums, schools and universities, especially within the urban development zone. “The election of an experienced businessman, Cyril Ramaphosa, as president of South Africa, the 2018 Budget and the Cabinet reshuffle have favoured the prospects of economic recovery. The rand/US dollar rate improvement, lower cost of imports and lower interest rates
are encouraging a more positive view of our economy – adding impetus to our credit standing globally. “According to Lightstone, sectional title units have recently outperformed freehold in price growth. You need to follow the money to get a real view of what is stimulating the Cape Town market. Without doubt, our residential complexes are exactly what the market wants right now – rising, stable rental returns for investors wanting to cover their bonds, cheap and efficient access to transport modes, including the MyCiTi bus service for students and workplace commuters, and beautiful indoor/outdoor living spaces with secure shared facilities and parking,” say Nortje. “The election of Cyril Ramaphosa is the icing on a very attractive cake.”
It can be difficult to find apartment blocks with adequate security, but the blocks that get it right can significantly add value to the properties in the complex, not to mention the fact that it creates a more pleasant and safer experience for visitors and residents alike GRANT REA, CERTIFIED SALES AND LETTING SPECIALIST, RE/MAX LIVING
Monopoly Durban Edition board game
T
he recently launched Monopoly Durban Edition board game features well-known landmarks such as Moses Mabhida Stadium, uShaka Marine World and The Pavilion shopping centre, among others. Durban is the second South African city to be featured in the board game, after Cape Town.
Michelle Burger, area principal, Pam Golding Properties Durban, adds, “The Monopoly Durban Edition board game is also a plus for local residents, as it’s a clever way of making the game more relevant for anyone who loves this city. It will certainly re-ignite many Monopoly players to go out and buy this new version for a fun and personal gaming experience.”
“It’s not surprising that Durban features so prominently on the international arena, as apart from its high tourism, cultural and leisure appeal, it’s home to a host of different residential areas ranging from entry-level through to the top echelon, making it the perfect metro to use as a base for Monopoly,” says Carol Reynolds, area principal, Pam Golding Properties Durban Coastal.
Reynolds says it’s a further positive endorsement for a city that has previously been underestimated and which is now coming into its own. “With the recent surge of interest in Durban from a tourism perspective, and just based on its dream climate and lifestyle offering – including a world-renowned promenade and all the amenities one could wish for – it’s the perfect time for Durban to gain further recognition.”
The Regency Apartment Hotel launches
T
he Regency Apartment Hotel was recently unveiled to VIP guests as it enters a key construction phase. The luxury lifestyle development is due for completion in June 2018. The R350m development is situated in the Menlyn node, positioned for easy access to the Menlyn business district, the malls and conveniently close to the highway for access to Joburg or the OR Tambo International Airport. The luxury apartment style hotel suites will be available for business or leisure accommodation. This is the first Regency hotel and was created by Key Spirit Development in partnership with MD Siyanda Dlamini’s new hotel management company (soon to be launched).
“The impressive 220 suite development will cater to a mix of local and international professionals, investors, diplomats and embassy staff with different needs and requirements. Additional conferencing facilities are available for corporates on request. There’s a growing demand for accommodation to cater to the busy Menlyn district and we have created the ideal offering,” says Siyanda Dlamini, MD, The Regency Hotel Group. Designed by award-winning architecture firm, Archactive International, and developed by Key Spirit Development, The Regency Apartment Hotel is the ideal solution for long- and short-term business or leisure travel to Menlyn, Pretoria.

Home office space Create a good-looking workspace that inspires creativity and productivity WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER
IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK
W
orking from home sounds like everybody’s dream situation, but it can be challenging. You need to have a great, dedicated space so that you want to be there. You may not spend all week in there, but it still needs to speak to you.
The global change in work patterns
According to a Regus survey, The workplace revolution: a picture of flexible working 2017, more than 70% of South African businesspeople polled expect to see an increase in demand for flexible work hours and 63% reported working remotely 2,5 days a week or more. Elize van den Berg, founder of lifestyle retailer Beetroot Inc, says, “This is great news for many of us who would like more flexibility to work where and when it suits us. More good news is that a home office comes with tax breaks. But according to online tax consultants at TaxTim, ‘The taxpayer must have an area of their home, which is used exclusively for this purpose.’”
Make it a dedicated space
You must create a dedicated office space in your home. Elize says, “People often tuck their home office into an unused
space that’s not good for anything else. Mistake. It can’t be an afterthought in a dark corner or high-traffic area. Choose somewhere you’re going to love spending time, with good lighting, a view if possible, and sufficient plug points. If clients visit you, you’ll need space for an extra chair or sofa. And don’t forget excellent connectivity and cellphone coverage.”
all you need – this also encourages tidiness. Consider shelves that you can position near your desktop.
A good-looking, functional space
If you’ll have clients in and out of your space, be sure to create an area for them. Having a beautiful sofa and coffee table is usually more than sufficient. Consider getting a customised, comfortable couch, or reupholster one you already have to match your home office decor scheme.
“Get busy on a decor scheme that lifts your heart,” says Elize. “If you love colour, consider a bright wall to inspire alertness and focus. This workspace is where you’re going to have bold and brave ideas. If you prefer a neutral palette for a calming effect, I’d still suggest injecting some energy with bright scatter cushions, coordinated files and desktop accessories. “For furnishings, the most important investment is your chair,” says Elize. “Find one that’s ergonomically comfortable and have it set up specifically for you. Next, choose your desk. You need to have everything easily at hand, but it doesn’t all have to be on the desk surface. If you have good storage solutions, a smallish worktop is
“If your work means you move from one work surface to another, consider utility trolleys,” says Elize. “You can scoot them from one workstation to another.”
Where to meet clients
When it comes to choosing accessories, give them as much thought as everything else. “Rather save up to get something as beautiful as it is functional – an accessory you love, even if it’s just a pen holder,” says Elize.
Add value
“The home office is the most important room in the house, yet often we treat it like the least important,” says Elize. “It should be functional, practical, a place that reflects who you are and complements the work you do.”

Eco estates Discover what the country's eco estates have to offer
WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED & SHUTTERSTOCK
E
scaping into unspoilt landscapes and peaceful nature reserves rich in wildlife and beauty on weekends and holidays is one of the joys of living in South Africa. Now it’s possible to take it one step further and integrate that awayfrom-it-all feeling into everyday life by moving to an eco estate.
“Eco estates have become the current trend in developing real estate – particularly in areas rich in natural beauty,” says Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO, RE/MAX of Southern Africa. The term eco estate can be confusing, as it also applies to suburban estates with a green building focus. In the context of this write up, the term refers to sustainable lifestyle estates that have made nature conservation a priority. Also termed wildlife estates, these low-impact developments set aside a major portion of their land as a nature reserve, either rehabilitating overused farmland back to its indigenous state or conserving pristine landscapes. Building is done at a low density, landscaping is kept to a minimum and gardens are usually not fenced, allowing wildlife to roam freely, and are limited to indigenous plants. Lifestyle elements vary between estates, but residents can expect nature hikes, mountain biking and RAPTOR'S VIEW WILDLIFE ESTATE
bird-watching to be the main leisure activities, and, with conservation top of the list, most wildlife estates don’t allow domestic pets.
Into the wild
“Technology is now making it much easier to live permanently on a wildlife estate and run your business from there rather than just visiting for weekends and holidays,” says Berry Everitt, group CEO, Chas Everitt International, “and this is especially boosting demand for estates in areas such as Hoedspruit, Mbombela/ White River and the Waterberg.” For example, Raptor’s View Wildlife Estate, outside Hoedspruit, comprises 1,000ha of bush with single-storey thatched houses built on up to 300 1ha stands. An extra attraction for families is the Southern Cross environmental school established here in 2002. This school serves many families relocating to the area, including those at nearby Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, which offers 200 0,5ha stands on 400ha of bushveld with impala, kudu, warthogs and other game.
Close to the city
A big part of the attraction is that buyers are able to live on true wildlife estates – where the animals, birds and plants are the real ‘residents’, humans are the ‘visitors’ and large parts of the estate are respectfully left undeveloped and untouched – while still being within easy reach of good schools, shops and high-speed internet connections
If leaving the city behind entirely isn’t possible, Zebra’s Nest Eco Estate, 15 minutes east of Pretoria, or Meyersdal Eco Estate, south of Joburg, have the best of both worlds. Zebra’s Nest has just seven 4,2ha stands, so residents live among zebra, nyala, klipspringer and more. Two dogs are allowed per household with strict rules on their management. Meyersdal has 343 stands of varying sizes adjoining a larger nature reserve and offers mountain bike trails, squash and tennis courts, as well as dams with catch and release fishing.
BERRY EVERITT, GROUP CEO, CHAS EVERITT INTERNATIONAL
INTABA RIDGE SECURE ECO ESTATE
“Most purchasers who buy in these estates are looking to remove themselves from the busy city life and would like to go back to their roots. Family life is always a consideration and the ‘rural’ feel of the smaller schools holds great appeal,” says Retha Schutte, regional executive, Pam Golding Properties Pretoria.

Fix Forward Nedbank commits R3,4m to the entrepreneurial development of Fix Forward tradesmen in Cape Town and Gauteng
I
n support of its commitment to growing the economy and creating jobs, Nedbank is funding a R3,4m enterprise development initiative with Cape Town-based not-for-profit company, Fix Forward. The initiative is designed to develop the entrepreneurial skills of 100 tradespeople. Since 2012, Fix Forward has been matching skilled tradesmen from low-income areas with homeowners and businesses undertaking renovation and construction projects. The Nedbank funding will enable 100 tradespeople – 50 in Cape Town and 50 in Gauteng, registered as contractors within the Fix Forward network – to take part in a 12-month entrepreneur development programme to equip them with the skills and experience necessary to run their own small businesses. Joshua Cox, CEO, Fix Forward, says, “We’re delighted with Nedbank’s support of our initiative to set talented, skilled and hard-working tradesmen on a path to building successful businesses. We not only connect them with the market but also focus on giving them the know-how on how to run their own businesses, thus becoming self-sufficient.”
With South African unemployment at a 14-year high, Nirmala Reddy, senior manager: enterprise development, Nedbank, commends the role played by Fix Forward in creating opportunities for hard-working individuals marginalised as a result of lack of resources, business acumen or contacts.
Fix Forward currently operates in Cape Town but will be launching in Gauteng during the year. As such, it has been decided that half the funding will be set aside to support entrepreneurial development of 50 tradesmen in Gauteng and 50 in the greater Cape Town area.
“Fix Forward introduces the industry to competitively priced, competent tradesmen, and is giving back to equip these individuals in establishing businesses of their own. As a bank for small businesses, it’s an initiative that matches our desire to grow the economy and create jobs through our own innovative solutions aimed at helping entrepreneurs,” says Reddy.
“The demand for our tradesmen continues to grow in tandem with Fix Forward’s reputation for excellent service and reliable workmanship. This means we have a real need for specialist tradesmen – particularly builders, carpenters and cabinet-makers, tilers and pavers, and plumbers – to make applications to join our network,” says Cox. “Successful applicants have the opportunity to benefit from the current development programme funding from Nedbank too.”
Selected tradespeople meeting the Fix Forward screening requirements – to ensure high quality workmanship, integrity and reliability – are eligible to participate in the company’s year-long development programme, which incorporates e-learning, workshops and coaching. The content is industry specific and deals with various aspects of running a business, from marketing and pricing to financial and project management.
