y now all schools have opened for the 2017 academic year, and pupils have survived their first full week back at school. New adventures can be exciting, but daunting too as we try to find our place and adjust to new circumstances – something I’m experiencing myself at the moment. However, every new experience is an opportunity to learn and grow, so I hope you all rise to the challenge. Wishing all pupils the best of luck for 2017, and to the new matrics – remember to study hard but also to enjoy your final school year.

D Pretorius, awardwinning cellarmaster at Steenberg Vineyards in the Constantia Valley, talks about Sauvignon Blanc, sea breezes and the charm of sparkling wine.

Did you know? The firing of the Noon Gun on Signal Hill is one of the oldest traditions in Cape Town. The cannons are also the oldest guns still in daily use in the world.

Q: Is it challenging working across such a wide range of styles? A: Over the years the range has evolved and grown to cater for a variety of markets. As a winemaker it’s challenging, but it’s also exciting because it gives you more opportunity to play around in the cellar and get your head around different styles of winemaking.

In 2016, Cape Town was named the best food city in the world by Conde Nast Traveler and it’s easy to see why. Q: What’s your favourite wine to work with come harvest time? A: Definitely Sauvignon Blanc. With most wines you’re starting out with a score of zero out of 100, and the more things you do right in the cellar the better the wine you end up with. With Sauvignon Blanc it’s the opposite. You don’t have oak or many cellar techniques to

work with, so you start with 100 points and the aim is not to lose too many along the way. It’s all about preserving the character the grapes give you at the beginning. Q: Sauvignon Blanc is certainly the signature grape of Steenberg. Why does it do so well on the property? A: Sauvignon Blanc does extremely well in cooler areas. At Steenberg we’re close to the ocean, with lots of wind, so the climatic conditions are well suited to Sauvignon. We also have lean soils with weathered granite and kaolin, so you get a smoky mineral character in the wine. Q: Sauvignon Blanc is also the grape behind one of the estate’s more interesting sparkling wines. A: Internationally, Prosecco is outselling Champagne and there’s a big move to alternative bubblies that are lighter, more fun, and

not too traditional. That was the inspiration behind our sparkling Sauvignon Blanc which gave us the aromatics, freshness, and fruitiness we were looking for. Q: At the other end of the scale is the Lady R flagship, a more serious offering. A: We only make 3,000 bottles a year of the Lady R. It’s aged on the lees for 52 months, and a further nine months on the cork, so it’s five years from vintage by the time of release. It’s a nice serious wine that really showcases what the estate is capable of in high-end bubbly. Q: What other projects are you working on in the cellar? A: If you take a gastronomic evening, Steenberg can match a wine to the whole meal… except for a dessert wine, so that’s on our list. We’ve tried working with Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, but we’re not quite getting the quality we want. But we’re going to keep trying!

Three innovative new eateries in central Cape Town are designed for time-poor foodies and serve really good “slow” food without the wait WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED & ANDY LUND

N

ext time you want a quick unfussy meal without sacrificing quality and flavour, try one of these new eateries.

Chefs

This no-frills cafeteria serves restaurant-quality food. You can enjoy a delicious balanced meal within minutes of arriving. A choice of three meals is posted on the website each day: a light meal, a veggie option and a more substantial meat-based dish, plus an optional dessert. Order and pay via the iPad on arrival, then your customised tray of food is brought to you from the open kitchen headed by chef Jenny Ward. Dishes such as woodroasted chicken, bourbon BBQ-basted Karoo lamb, smoky beef carpaccio, roasted beetroot terrine, and side dishes of salads, salsa and vegetable chips have the complexity and flavour of upmarket restaurant fare.

House of H

Stepping off Loop Street into House of H is like entering a welcoming parallel universe. It’s a steampunk delight of Victorian wood-fired range, copper piping, long tables and a living wall of herbs. At the kitchen counter you meet H (chef Heinrich Koen), ready to talk you through your order. The short, steak-focused menu is designed for quick cooking and feel-good eating, and the card swipe system makes self-service a breeze. There is grassfed organic beef – dry-hung so it cooks in minutes – for rib-eye, sirloin, beef ribs, steak rolls and brisket sarmies. There is sustainable fish, hand-cut chips, fresh salads and veggies from a community urban organic garden, and home-grown oyster mushrooms for substantial mushroom burgers. There’s also a bar, coffee shop, barbers, and, coming soon, a rooftop tattoo parlour.

The Sneaky Sausage

An unpretentious take on the German beerhall, upstairs from buzzing House of Machines on Shortmarket Street, this is the place to discover the difference between bratwurst and knackwurst in a pared back, no-fuss setting. A hit with the cool crowd, the signature dish is the currywurst, and, in case this sounds dangerously close to fast food, all the meat is carefully sourced, with a daily special sausage from Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants, guaranteed to be ethically produced. There are also vegan sausages and the tempting deep-fried bits on the side include sweet potato fries with truffle oil and polenta, or jalapeno wontons with aioli.

Cafe Roux comes to town The much-loved Noordhoek live-music venue has finally opened a branch in town WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE IMAGES: RENÉ MARITZ

C

afe Roux Noordhoek has become somewhat of an institution when it comes to live music venues. So it was only a matter of time before this unique offering came to the heart of the Mother City. “We never intended to expand Cafe Roux, but it all happened very organically and quickly. We saw an opportunity and said if we find the right location and business partners, then it’s an option. We soon found 74 Shortmarket Street and the dream partners, our cousin Vanesa Bisschop-Louw and her husband Michael,” says co-owner Lindi Green. Much like the original Noordhoek restaurant, Cafe Roux Cape Town will offer an intimate live entertainment experience where patrons can enjoy a great meal, some wine and firstrate company. “It’s very special to be able to see some of SA’s biggest musical talents and comedians up-close and personal, and to get to hear all the stories behind the songs and the on-stage banter that happens when you create that kind of intimate space.” says Lindi.

The recently renovated interior is the epitome of urban cool. Whereas the Noordhoek branch has a more rustic, family-friendly atmosphere, the Cape Town interior is chic with leather booths, touches of brass, wood and metal, with the focal point being the gorgeous David Bowie mural. “Cafe Roux in Cape Town is slick and sexy, making it a perfect city experience,” adds Lindi. But, as those familiar with Cafe Roux Noordhoek know, it’s not all about the music – there is also tasty food on offer. “We wanted to keep the food very different to what we serve in Noordhoek and to do food that other restaurants in the area aren’t doing,” says Lindi. The focus is on handmade gourmet pizzas with fresh, seasonal toppings. For those who are not too hungry, there are delicious salads and cheese-and-charcuterie boards. With Cafe Roux Noordhoek being one of the country’s best music venues, the Cape Town branch is sure not to disappoint. “We have a super-exciting line-up of SA artists coming to the city early this year: Dan Patlansky, Jack Parow, Albert Frost, Barry Hilton, Sannie Fox and so much more,” says Lindi.

My business neighbourhood Two of South Africa’s best-known craft beer brewers have opened their own independent brewery and tasting room in Diep River WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED

R

oss and Meghan McCulloch were early innovators in the budding craft beer scene in Cape Town when they established the Jack Black’s Brewing Company in 2007. Now their brewery and tasting room is a welcome watering hole for Southern Suburbs locals. Ross tells us more about their base in Diep River. Q: How did your business start? A: Both Meg and I are very passionate about craft beer. Coming back to South Africa after living abroad for nine years, we saw an opportunity in the South African market. Back in 2007 there were only a handful of brewers, and the time was right to give it a go.

Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: Diep River Industrial area (Elfindale) has the right zoning for micro manufacturing and has smaller businesses rather than big manufacturers. There is a good stable supply of well water in this area, which we run through our filtration system. We have nearby

Neighbourhood

access to the M5 for distribution, leading directly to the N1 and N2 or Southern Peninsula. Also there was a cost consideration: buildings are better value than closer to the CBD. And, importantly, we are close to many of our customers in the Southern Suburbs, so they can come visit us anytime. Q: How did you find your premises? A: It was almost a two-year search. The challenge was that during that time the project kept on growing, so our search criteria kept on changing. Eventually we found the almost perfect site, that had been sitting empty for almost a year, waiting for us. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he location in a small industrial area surrounded by residential is great. The building has lots of manufacturing feature benefits, with space that works well for our tasting room and consumer interaction. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We have Guy from Overberg Foods next door, and Cape Cold Storage. Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Rentals are in the R50/m range – so good value. We bought the building as this was the best solution for our project. We really believe in the area and one of our goals is to make it really desirable

for small artisanal businesses like ours, such as brewers, bakers, butchers, distillers etc. Q: How many people go through your shop each day? A: It’s still early days, as we only opened the tasting room a few months ago, but a few thousand people come through a month and the interest is growing. We are very excited about the events we have planned over summer. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We are still a few years away from this, but our business is looking pretty positive, so we are always planning a few years ahead. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have some online retail partners that do a great job at getting our beers out there. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: O ur Brewers Lager, which we are super proud of, then we have some new kids on the block, like our Cape Pale Ale and Atlantic Weiss beer, that are quickly gaining real traction.

Clanwilliam Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: WEST COAST WAY, GOOGLE & ISTOCK

F

or nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts, Clanwilliam – the rooibos capital of the world – is a popular holiday and weekend destination. Two hundred and thirty kilometres north of Cape Town, and an easy two-hour drive up the N7, its huge dam and scenic position beside the beautiful Cederberg mountains offer a compelling array of outdoor activities from water-skiing and kayaking to rock climbing and bouldering in the wild, rugged landscapes. “The very first thing that intrigued us was the rocks,” says Tracy du Plessis of her first visit which inspired her family’s move here from Joburg. “The Pakhuis formation, east of Clanwilliam, is a fascinating landscape of huge, largely sandstone, boulders. It felt like a kind of alien landscape.” Famous for the brilliant show of spring flowers which attracts visitors from all over the world, the Cederberg’s incredible biodiversity includes a wealth of useful and medicinal plants that have since become Tracy’s passion. She works to rediscover the ancient

knowledge of the Khoi and San people, whose legacy remains close to the surface here in rock paintings and the local tradition of riel dancing.

WILD WILD WEST: Zip-lining, mountain biking, cave explorations, bouldering, fresh seafood, hand-picked rooibos, wild flowers, an unspoilt coastline, and “veldskoene” made in a tiny town tucked into the vast Cederberg mountains are just a few of the many things that are to be showcased to visitors with the launch of the new 7 Stops on the N7 Route and the West Coast Way Wild Route.

While weekenders and boating enthusiasts tend to base themselves on the shores of the dam, the town itself has an active community of residents and puts on an impressive number of annual events, many organised by local volunteers. There are several schools in the area, including Elizabethfontein Primary: a farm school whose riel dancers have danced at the opening of parliament.

The 7 Stops on the N7 Route is a self-drive adventure which includes Piketberg, Citrusdal, Clanwilliam, Wupperthal, Van Rhynsdorp, Nieuwoudtville and Garies. Kardoesie Countrystop, a popular farmstall, can be found at the centre of the route. The West Coast Way Wild Route, the ultimate “off the beaten track” experience, offers two options: the Sustainable Sea Food Track, which travels along the coast and includes Elands Bay, Lambert’s Bay and Doringbaai; and the People Rocking Nature Track, which covers the towns along the N7, starting at Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort and Citrusdal.

The lack of malls, cinemas and department stores is part of Clanwilliam’s appeal for many, but the town offers the essentials and more. “Clanwilliam has a great public hospital – very clean, wellrun and competent,” says Tracy. “There is a golf course, a small gym, a bowling green and a pharmacy. It has a small-community-oriented feel, but is large enough for a good variety of shops and grocery stores.”

For more information on West Coast Way, and other routes on offer, visit westcoastway.co.za.

What do you love about the Clanwilliam area?

Best things for families on holiday in Clanwilliam?

How would you spend a free weekend in the area?

Well, there is the beautiful Clanwilliam Dam with activities like water sports and fishing. There are the Cederberg mountains with hiking trails, mountain biking, 4x4 trails and mountain climbing. There are nice campsites all along the Clanwilliam Dam and in the mountains where nature lovers can express themselves. It is a caring town where we look out for one another. Once you’ve stayed for a month, you never want to leave.

Family times around the braai or pool in the comfort of your holiday home in the evening, often with friends. On the dam during the day, boating, skiing and chilling. And in winter, red wine and fires in the evening, and hiking the rock art trail or visiting the rock formations. And then there’s flower season. Clanwilliam is a link-up place, and with the new N7 and soon-to-be-raised dam wall, it’s a possible hot spot in the Western Cape.

I would camp at Algeria Forest Station and use the many wonderful hiking trails in the vicinity of the forest station. Algeria, with its pristine clean and cold mountain water, provides an ideal combination together with the breathtaking sandstone formations of the Cederberg. If the hiking trails should prove too taxing on your body, there is the option to rejuvenate body and soul with a wine tasting at nearby Cederberg Wines.
