’ve loved Halloween for as long as I can remember, so this event caught my eye. On Saturday, 28 October, the Rotary Blue Train Park will host the inaugural Kids Dream Fest. The Blue Train will be transformed into The Ghost Train, inspired by the works of Tim Burton and Lewis Carroll, and will feature quirky characters, tunnel trolls and random, confused zombie “attacks”. So get ready to meet under the quarter moon crescent to see The Ghost Train emerge from the shadowlands.

W

ith plenty to tempt locals as well as visitors, the Silo District is humming with life and eateries, and there’s a new kid on the block in the original V&A restaurant strip too.

The Yard

The local go-to spot for breakfast, coffee, quick lunches or leisurely fine dining, The Yard is in the heart of the Silo District below the Virgin Active. Conceived by Abigail Bisogno, who developed the Spice Route near Paarl, and restaurateur GP Singh of The Punjab restaurants, it’s effectively a mini Spice Route in the city, with the deli selling curated

local products, from homeware to Fairview cheeses and DV chocolate.

Chef Deep Arneja has worked all over the world in an enviable list of top restaurants and his travels are reflected in the wide-ranging menu. It spans traditional Indian flavours and includes Middle Eastern, Asian, Italian and French cuisine. But there’s no fusion confusion; each dish is distinct and beautifully executed. We enjoyed the summer gnocchi, deliciously light with a fresh creamy sauce and a hint of truffle. The Raan-e-Yard slow-roasted lamb was deeply aromatic and tender, and the varied antipasti gave a taste tour of the world, each mouthful delicious.

Firefish

2

The Kove Collection has taken a fresh look at waterfront dining with Firefish, which overlooks the harbour outside the V&A Waterfront mall. The sharing menu, with delectable dim sum, yakitori skewers and bao, along with the signature range of sushi, is perfect for sundowner snacks or quick lunches. You can also treat these as starters before exploring the seafood and steak menus, where the Josper charcoal grill comes into its own for perfect grilling at high temperatures.

The Silo District Did you know? The old grain silo building, that The Silo Hotel and Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa now occupy, was the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa at 57m when it opened in August 1924.

You can customise your fish or steak selection with varied sauces and sides, or go for a dish where the chef has combined plenty of subtle Asian influences. My sea bass with champagne and pickled ginger sauce was a dream of velvet richness topped with crispy lotus root and daikon. The sirloin with soy butter, yuzu and miso was full of flavour and smoky from the grill. Save room for the dessert because the burnt matcha cream with strawberry sorbet is a delight, as is the chocolate macaron pie.

T

he Silo District is quickly becoming the epicentre of art and design in the Mother City. With the opening of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, the Southern Guild, Kirsten Goss flagship store and much more, it seems only natural that a hotel that puts art, fashion and music at the forefront would find a home here. A first of its kind in Africa, Radisson Red officially opened on 12 September opposite the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. “In our world, we hate dull; we embrace the energy that daring to be different and bold can bring. You see that in the Silo District,” says Dale Simpson, curator, Radisson Red. The one-of-a-kind hotel sets itself apart from the other Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group hotels through its unique offerings. Marketed specifically to millennials, it’s the answer to new travel trends. “We set ourselves apart

from others through our product development approach and our service delivery. The products and services offered to guests are carefully curated to ensure they deliver that sense of place. In other areas, it’s about having fun. We work as one team with one aim, creating an exceptional guest experience. An experience delivered by genuine people, not processes,” says Dale. This means you can expect a hotel that doesn’t take itself too seriously, with business conference centres that double as games rooms, yoga on the rooftop and staff who are the epitome of cool, says Dale. “Name badges? Never. We’ll just say hello.” The hotel is also home to OuiBar and Ktchn, which serves only locally produced wines and beers and celebrates Cape Town with local dishes that have been given a Red twist. “Check out the Box of Prawn Pops, complete with ginger and noodles, or

our yummy Karoo Lamb Pot,” says Dale. The Red Roof features a kitchen grills bar and an outdoor pool. Both are open to the public. “Our Friday ‘Call of the Loin’ event has changed Friday night vibes and encourages a chilled social scene where you can watch the sun drop over the ocean,” says Dale. The hotel features 252 boldly designed rooms (standard two-sleeper studios, studio suites with balconies and sea views, and even pet-friendly rooms), a fully equipped gym, free unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi wherever you are in the hotel, the Radisson Red app – which you can use to check in and check out, and order drinks and food – as well as plenty of weekly events that are open to the public. It’s a hotel for the new-generation traveller – one who is stylish, sophisticated and ever so cool. So for an experience like no other, head to the Radisson Red today.

Crafty brews at Ukhamba Cape Town’s first black-owned craft brewery is bottling “hoppyness” and State Capture WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

S

tate Capture. It’s a phrase on everyone’s lips at the moment, as we ponder how to process the latest scandal splashed across the front pages. But down in Woodstock, Lethu Tshabangu is hoping all Capetonians enjoy a little taste of it this summer. And this is certainly one brouhaha any beer lover would be glad to be a part of. State Capture is perhaps my favourite of the three beers Lethu is brewing at Ukhamba Beerworx, his burgeoning craft brewery at The Palms Lifestyle Centre in Woodstock. Capable of producing 5,000L per month, it’s a cosy space that is part taproom and part production brewery, where you can sip a craft beer while watching the brewer at work. What began as a home-brewing hobby in 2012 has turned into a profession for Lethu, a man evidently passionate about craft beer. “I put a lot of myself into my beers,” says Lethu, taking a break from bottling his latest batch. “I always like to brew something different.”

A fine example of that is his Utywala. Inspired by the African tradition of sharing sorghum beer from a clay pot, ukhamba, Lethu blends sorghum malt and Belgian Saison yeasts into a crisp and fragrant farmhouse ale that brings a modern twist to a hugely traditional brew. The cheeky State Capture, however, is an India Pale Ale (IPA) – a style hugely popular at the moment. Lucky then for Lethu that his happy accident turned out well. After forgetting some of his malts at home, “at the brewery, I just took what I had and created a beer,” says Lethu with a chuckle. “When it came out it was beautiful and I thought, ‘This is the beer that’s going to be loved by everyone; it’s going to capture the market.’” The third in the range is his Pursuit of Hoppyness; a Black IPA that marries roasted chocolate notes and spicy malt in a style known as a Cascadian Ale. It’s a tricky beer to get right and has fast become Lethu’s calling card as an upand-coming brewer in the Mother City.

Virtual reality comes to Woodstock with immersive gaming at VRCade WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED

A

frica’s first social virtual reality arcade, VRCade, combines the social vibe of an old school arcade with cutting-edge gaming technology. From peaceful scuba diving, to post-apocalyptic landscapes filled with zombies, quirky job simulations and active duelling or boxing, it’s the perfect escape from the real world. Founder, Zach Joubert, tells us about the new space at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock. Q: How did your business start? A: A s a part-time LLM student, I was invited to pitch for the UCT Graduate School of Business/ MTN business incubator in March 2016 – something of a three-month “dragon’s den”. I pitched the idea, they liked it, offered mentorship and, via a chance encounter, we were offered a spot in the Watershed at the V&A Waterfront. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: We outgrew our initial partner’s physical space (Workshop 17 at the V&A). The combination of the vibe, footfall and proximity to the rest of Cape Town made The Old Biscuit Mill an ideal choice. Woodstock is also edgy, young and at the cutting edge, just like VRCade. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I got in touch with Stephen Schutte, who co-owns HintHunt at The Old Biscuit Mill. He saw the potential for collaboration and wanted to be part of a new brand. HintHunt also happened to have a perfect space available and they have the same focus on entertainment and teambuilding that we do.

SEE FOR YOURSELF: VRCade 087 470 0114 vrarcade.co.za

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: We needed a physical space that we could customise for virtual reality experiences and which was also a cool place where people would want to hang out.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We’re surrounded by some amazing businesses and restaurants, including The Test Kitchen, as well as Wine at The Mill, Redemption Burgers and, of course, HintHunt. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Relatively high. Woodstock is in the process of gentrification and rental prices, particularly in The Old Biscuit Mill, have become comparable with the more expensive parts of Cape Town. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: The foot traffic in this area is highly variable and decreases in winter. Our online bookings are, however, higher in winter and we’re busiest when the weather is bad. Footfall in summer and on Saturdays is also high. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes. We’re looking to open an exciting new location early to mid-2018. We’re also starting a VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) development branch, creating bespoke content. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We take bookings online and we plan to get into VR software development. So watch this space. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: We emphasise multiplayer experiences, and the most popular titles vary, as we’re always updating our titles – think of a cinema with its rolling catalogue. Notable favourites from the past include Job Simulator and Raw Data. Some big titles are slated for release before Christmas and we expect that Doom VFR, Skyrim VR and Fallout VR will be instant favourites.

Picture this Framing is a great way to protect possessions and preserve treasured memories WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK

F

rom a collection of bottle tops to vintage spectacles, a wedding gown and shoes, there are many fascinating stories out there about the wide variety of items that have been framed. Remember when framing something was more functional than artistic? Now the frame and its contents can be unusual, quirky, decorative and sentimental. Greg Hayes, Stepping Stone Studios, is an artist and printer who has framed many interesting items over the years. “Once, as a school fundraiser, we framed a tennis racquet, signed TV camera lens filters and sweatbands – all from the same tennis player. We printed a large photo of him and used that as the background on which to place the artefacts. We created a box frame between the backer board and the glass to allow for all this.” As box-framing has become increasingly popular, Stepping Stones can now frame flat artworks to give them a 3-D look. Greg says a variety of materials are used for the frames. “We often use recycled crating wood for a rustic effect, or reprocessed wooden floorboards. We’ve also used window frames to frame an artwork and even an old tea tray.” A carpenter’s ruler also made a superb frame for sepia photographs/memorabilia.

PROPERTY NEWS

7

Modern trends favour simple frames and natural woods combined with painted edges. Greg uses kiaat, oak, beech and rosewood combined with white, black or grey edges. Most requests are for simple, minimal framing, using square frames and no mounting. “We’re using the backer board as the mount; it’s more economical. We can also attach different materials to the backer – textured wallpaper, pressed plant leaves or reed wallpaper – and put the image or item onto that. This works well when you have decor in mind because you can choose the colour of the backer to complement colours in the space. “Some objects are definitely better framed than left in a cupboard gathering dust or being eaten by fish moths,” says Greg. “Framing a christening dress or a memorable sporting shirt allows one to enjoy the piece more and conserves it from the ravages of storage. We’ve just box-framed a few of the original voting posters from 1994 with Nelson Mandela on them for the ANC. We’re also framing some old swords passed down as family heirlooms.” Greg also recently framed a painting of a tree using the wood from the tree in the painting. There are numerous considerations, but there’s little doubt that preserving memories in a creative way looks good and feels great.

Decide how you would like to arrange your artwork – a quick online search will give you plenty of inspiration. Play around with different frames to find the perfect selection to complement your decor.

Outline each frame on a piece of paper, cut it out and then place the template on your wall using masking tape. This way you’ll be able to see how the arrangement works.

Golf estates We take a look at the top 10 golf estates in South Africa WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

S

outh Africa’s residential golf estates are among the best in the world. Their scenic settings and spectacular views are as much an attraction for visitors and residents as the world-class golf courses themselves. Over the years, many estates have evolved beyond a primarily golf-centred offering and now offer a full lifestyle experience, with features such as hotels, restaurants, shops, children’s activities and other sports facilities. For many residents, it’s the secure lifestyle that is the prime motivation for choosing to buy into a golf estate. Families love that children have the freedom to be independent and retirees enjoy the reassurance of living in a safe environment. Easy access to the golf course and driving range are top of the list for golfers. People who don’t play choose the golf estate lifestyle for the convenience of having all the facilities they need on their doorstep, such as a gym, a clubhouse and restaurant, spacious houses, landscaped surroundings, as well as views of the ocean, mountain, fynbos and forest. The New World Wealth annual report assesses South Africa’s residential estates on a variety of criteria, such as the quality of the houses, the views, natural surroundings, security, investment potential and activities offered. We bring you the top 10 golf estates in South Africa from the recently released 2017 report.
