alty, spicy, umami-packed biltong pairs beautifully with red wines, and these three cellars in the Stellenbosch Winelands dish up a delicious opportunity for protein and a “proe”. SEE FOR YOURSELF: Cape Country Routes capecountryroutes.com
For close on a century Alto Wine Estate has established itself as one of the country’s best-loved red-wine producers, leveraging its unique position on the slopes of the Helderberg – and a succession of talented winemakers – to create award-winning red wines. Alto Rouge has been a staple on South African tables for decades, while the single-varietal Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon have been bagging plenty of awards of late.
Served on the terrace of the Wine Lounge, with spectacular views over the Winelands, the Alto Wine & Biltong Tasting (R110pp) pairs four estate wines with four styles of biltong, each cured and spiced to highlight specific elements of the wines. Nibble on traditionally cured biltong with the Alto Cabernet Sauvignon, or smoky slivers with the Alto Shiraz. The flagship MPHS is matched with a tonguetwisting, red-wine biltong, jazzed up with Parmesan and white truffle! A quick drive back down the Annandale Road and along the R310 brings you to Stellenbosch Hills, whose Localis-Lekker Biltong & Wine Pairing (R75pp) has been going strong since 2005. Here the pairing pits springbok biltong against the Chardonnay-driven
1707 Reserve White, before a line-up of single-varietal reds and blends. You won’t get bored of the biltong here either, with beef, ostrich, and kudu on the menu of biltong and droëwors. Until the end of September, the pairing also includes proudly South African koesisters and koeksisters, paired with the luscious Stellenbosch Hills Muscat de Hambourg. On the other side of Stellenbosch, the tasting (R115pp) at Marianne Wines pairs five estate wines – one white, one Rosé and three reds – with springbok, kudu and beef biltong, allowing you to mix and match to your palate’s content. The estate is particularly known for its Bordeaux-style wines, including the elegant Desirade, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Spot the difference
A getaway like no other at the Cheetah Experience Ashia WORDS: BELINDA MOUNTAIN

T
he real difference at this recently launched cheetah sanctuary and working farm in Paarl, is the people who work there. They’re passionate about wild cat conservation, and instead of paying lip service to the idea, they’re actually having an impact on the wild cheetah population with this world-class offering. Why is this important? There are less than 6,800 wild cheetahs left on our planet, according to Vincent van der Merwe, cheetah metapopulation manager, Endangered Wildlife Trust. East and Southern Africa are the conservation strongholds, so it’s up to us to protect Africa’s most endangered big cat. Enter the Cheetah Experience Ashia, started by co-founders and directors, husband and wife Chantal Rischard and Stephan Illenberger, and Riana van Nieuwenhuizen, founder of
Cheetah Experience Bloemfontein. Members of the public can play their part in cheetah conservation through volunteer programmes, working holidays and research programmes. They also launched their ultraluxurious guest accommodation in January, which I was lucky enough to stay in. Spacious, comfortable and stylish, each of the four suites has its own bathroom and kitchenette, and a delicious continental breakfast is included as part of your rate. Day visitors can grab a bite to eat at their cafe with its dramatic views over the Drakenstein mountains, or sip on a delicious glass of wine made from grapes produced on the farm. But it’s seeing the cats up close that is the absolute highlight. No expense has been spared in the landscaping and set up of their spacious and lush enclosures, and it’s a privilege to learn more about cheetahs, servals, caracals
and leopards – as you’re taken on a tour by one of their knowledgeable guides. Groups of a maximum of 10 visitors per day are allowed to participate, so the experience is an intimate one, where the cats’ needs are always the priority. The big news when I visited was that Ashia had just completed the first phase of the release of a four-year-old captiveborn cheetah named Jasmin, into the protected wild at Kuzuko Lodge, a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape. According to reserve general manager Gerhard de Lange, Jasmin “is already exhibiting numerous traits that we believe will assist her smooth transition into the greater Kuzuko, ” which is very exciting news for the team at Ashia, and everyone else passionate about these majestic and speedy felines. Ashia is a not-for-profit undertaking and all profits raised from your visit are used to fund wildlife conservation projects.

My business neighbourhood Sleep on nature at Coco-Mat’s first Cape Town store in Gardens WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED
W
ith its handmade mattresses and sleep products made from sustainable natural materials, global brand Coco-Mat is changing the way we sleep. Lida Vermeulen and Luca Verbeeck have opened South Africa’s first Coco-Mat store, occupying the street frontage at luxury hotel 15 On Orange in Gardens. Lida tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: Coco-Mat began in the picturesque mountains of north-eastern Greece in 1989, when our founder, Paul Efmorfidis, wanted to create an all-natural, sustainably produced mattress. We developed a product using natural materials from renewable sources, such as coconut fibre, natural rubber, wool, cotton, sea grass, horsehair, silk, linen, wood and goose down. Today we have become a recognised leader for natural sleep products (mattresses, bed mattresses, pillows, duvets), bed linen, towels and furniture,
with a growing network of stores in 15 countries. We are committed to manufacturing the best beds in the world in the most sustainable way possible. Our factory in Northern Greece has a virtually neutral carbon footprint. Without smoke or noise, experienced craftsmen work patiently, following traditional carpentry methods, with respect for the environment and the region’s ecosystem. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Over a period of six months, we did market research and asked shop owners around Cape Town their opinion on the best locations. We wanted to be a destination shop and felt that the 15 On Orange location gives us the opportunity to create that, and to interact with hotel guests from all over South Africa. Q: How did you find your premises? A: Plenty of real-estate agents know us, we contacted several in the CBD and they were all very helpful. We viewed several spaces, but in the end, the front windows here made it for us. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The wide and open facade means that our shop is visible and our customers can see all the beautiful products from the street. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Float Zero is our neighbour and together we create a wellness feeling in the hotel with our services and products. We also have the Company Gardens next to us which fits in with our natural philosophy: green living,
taking time to enjoy nature, breathing fresh air and conserving what we have. Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Prices are reasonable for the amount of space in this area. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: We get more or less 10 people daily and we like to spend as much time with each customer as that person requires, to provide customers with the perfect sleeping product to suit their needs. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Our dream is to have a few more shops in the next five years and to do collaborations with like-minded brands. It’s always interesting to get together with brands and people who live for what they love doing. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, our website is global. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our four-layer bed system which combines four top products in one innovative bed system, made from 100% natural fibres such as seaweed, coconut fibre and natural rubber.

The latest on golf estates in South Africa
WOODHILL GOLF ESTATE
Golf estates remain a popular choice for South African and international homebuyers WORDS: BETSIE LOOCK-VAN DER MERWE
IMAGES: SUPPLIED & SHUTTERSTOCK
S
outh Africa is home to spectacular golf estates, many with championship golf courses which have played host to some of the world’s top golfers. Over the years, living on these estates has become increasingly popular and highly soughtafter. What are the current trends and key factors influencing property buyers’ decisions to invest in golf estates? Some of the country’s top real-estate experts share their views and experiences.
Why live on golf estates?
STEYN CITY
“As a warm, sunny country who loves outdoor sport including golf, it is easy to see the appeal of living on a golf estate,” says Samuel Seeff, chairman, Seeff Property Group. “Aside from being able to enjoy this sport as and when you feel like it, golf estates offer a secure, upmarket lifestyle and a fabulous environment for families.” Roz Everitt, Eagle Canyon Golf Estate area specialist, Chas Everitt International, adds that nowadays “many residents are not even golfers, but they value and appreciate the estate which lends itself to a lifestyle where nature plays a role too”. Most people choose golf estates for safety and security reasons, and so that their children can cycle, run and play freely within the estate without causing concern for their parents, says Loua Boshoff, broker and owner, RE/MAX Bushveld. According to Seeff, the first-class properties – often luxury houses – in golf estates are another major attraction for buyers who are prepared to pay a premium for a home in a top-ranked estate. “These are residential and investment properties that carry significant status and/or trophy-home value.”
PEARL VALLEY GOLF ESTATE
Dr Andrew Golding, chief executive, Pam Golding Property group, says, “For some buyers, having the peace of mind knowing that their families are
OLIVEWOOD PRIVATE ESTATE AND GOLF CLUB
securely ensconced within a secure golf estate with access to schooling and infrastructural facilities, enables the major breadwinner – who may well be a corporate executive or entrepreneur – to commute to major centres on business while still residing in a luxury home within a countrified ambience. With technological advances, however, many are able to work from their primary golf estate residence and travel on business only when required.”
current demand is across the board, not just from the high-end buyer,” says Golding. This ties in with the experience of Brandon van der Merwe, Ebotse Golf Estate area specialist, Chas Everitt International, that golf estates increasingly attract a broad spectrum of buyers as there is a range of property types to choose from, ranging from one-bedroom apartments to multi-million-rand mansions.
Current trends Sound investment Over the past several decades, golfestate living has become well-ingrained as a desirable property genre choice. However, “these days it is rare to find a purchase made purely on the golf course itself, although this could be a differentiating factor when making a final purchase decision between two or more estate offerings”, says Golding.
“Estates with additional amenities – thus accommodating a range of interests – are also sought-after. Estate living also gives residents greater control over shared expenditure and development. This has become more important in the current environment of rising utility costs,” remarks Golding. “Also trending, are those estates situated in and around major metropolitan areas or business hubs and in close proximity to good schooling.” Boshoff says another popular trend is that buyers purchase these properties as second or even third homes “that they rent to cover all the monthly expenses of the house with some change left over for the owner”. “Current trends or demand among buyers include strong community involvement, high expectations of technology, ecofriendly properties, state-of-the-art security and aesthetically pleasing environments,” says Everitt. Property professionals also experience a shift in the income profile of golf-estate buyers. “The fact that more and more estates are including a wider range of accommodation – sectional title and retirement villages – suggests that the
As congestion grows and security remains a priority, estate living becomes more popular. Similarly, with estates becoming more sustainable, the appeal to all buyers also grows. Golding explains, “Estate living has become a highly desirable lifestyle choice for many homebuyers, coupled with sound long-term investment potential. Situated within scenic, secure environments, they provide the added benefit of a low-maintenance, lock-up-and-go, less stressful lifestyle with other facilities on site – ideal for both local and international buyers, some of whom spend several months of the year in South Africa.” For Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO, RE/MAX of Southern Africa, the issue of sustainability is clear-cut. “Golf courses have always had an enticing charm about them, particularly for realestate investors. In fact, many fantasise about the day they get to retire next to their favourite green. The question isn’t whether golf estates are worth investing in, but which golf estates will earn the best return on investment.” Brian Falconer, Chas Everitt International franchisee, Dainfern, expects the fact that comparatively few new golf estates are being planned to have an “extremely positive impact on property price appreciation given the fact that security is so much of a priority in the minds of astute buyers”.

Security, the community lifestyle and capital growth are some of the reasons buyers are being attracted to the lush surroundings of golf estates.
