Being free This is what Freedom Day means to the Neighbourhood team:
A Homespun feast Imaginative flavour combinations, a relaxed candlelight vibe, and a story to every dish WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

It’s a conscious reminder to free your mind from the shackles of the past – personal and political. To me, every day is Freedom Day.
hen Matt Schreuder was naming his first restaurant, it took him a while to find a name that summed up his vision: good food, creative but not fussy, with a relaxed and welcoming vibe. The word “homespun” kept cropping up, and its definition – home-made, rustic, and unpretentious – struck a chord. While the innovative food is several notches up from rustic, it retains an authentic bistro feel, with an emphasis on knife skills and everything home-made, rather than the frills of fine dining. “Flavours are honest and natural,” says Matt, “if you see beetroot, you taste beetroot. It’s in the combinations of textures and flavour profiles that the magic happens for us.”
Charis, managing editor Freedom Day is about celebrating everything we have. To live in a country where women can vote, go to school and be treated as equals, is something I’m eternally grateful for.
Matt grew up working in his father’s Table View restaurant, Dale’s Place, then worked in restaurants and cocktail bars in Switzerland for eight years to save up for his own restaurant. It was always going to be in Table View. “Every time I came home, my friends would still be driving into town or over to Franschhoek to find good food. I wanted to open something here, so that people can relax over a good meal without a long drive home afterwards.” And since it opened last year, Homespun has grown an appreciative local following – you’ll need to book ahead even during the week.
Mlungisi, sub-editor It’s a celebration of how far we have come as a country, and a reminder to look to the future with optimism.
Lauren, online editor For me, it’s a day to be grateful for things I usually take for granted – to be able to walk my dog safely in the streets, to have a home to call my own, and to be able to be actively part of a democratic country.
Claire, group editor
There are no rules – ice cream with a starter, custard with a main course, even if it’s just in a subtle way, through food we want to excite people, give them a new experience MATT SCHREUDER, OWNER, HOMESPUN
Desserts too are a high point: Matt’s great-grandmother’s amazing baked cheesecake recipe, the richness offset with a red wine ice cream, a plate of heavenly roast raspberry gelato with elderflower-infused meringues, blueberry and many more surprise taste elements, left our palates excited and satisfied.
Anja, designer I celebrate the freedom that a democracy gives me to publish my creative work.

FREEDOM
It’s knowing that my say counts and that I can have it. I celebrate my freedom through ideas, creativity, words, and engaging my family in thinking beyond themselves.
We started with the beef tataki, a sushiinspired dish of the best aged Angus beef, flash-fried in panko breadcrumbs. Matt encouraged us to pile all the elements of the dish onto one forkful – the wasabi mayo, white onion purée, pickled ginger and tempura fried onion – making the perfect balance of flavours to complement the tender meat. The smoked springbok carpaccio with wild mushrooms was another delightful contrast of flavour and texture. The innovative vegetarian dishes appealed too, but the meat mains won – a meltin-the mouth lamb en croute with a voluptuous pea and mint purée, and an intriguing crispy gammon rounded off by teriyaki carrots and a pecorino custard.

The Kingdom of Cabernet The vineyards of Stellenbosch are home to the most regal of the noble varieties WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES IMAGES: SUPPLIED

ith all the buzz about new varieties and off-the-beatentrack wine-growing regions, it’s easy to forget the noble varieties that have long been the benchmark for winemakers. While Merlot, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir all have their acolytes, it’s Cabernet Sauvignon that commands the most respect. In Stellenbosch, the variety of soils, topography and micro-climates are helping winemakers craft worldclass Cabernets that walk a tightrope between the so-called Old World and New World styles of winemaking. “We sit squarely between the Old World, leaner style of Cabernet, and the New World bright fruit,” says Alastair Rimmer, cellar master, Kleine Zalze. “We do great Chardonnay, we do great Shiraz. But what does Stellenbosch do best? Cabernet.” And Kleine Zalze has the awards to prove it. The Vineyard Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 bagged a five-star award in the Platter’s guide, while the
Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has won gold at the International Wine and Spirits Challenge in London, as well as a Grand Gold Medal at the 2015 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. On the slopes of the nearby Helderberg, historic estate Alto is also famed for its full-bodied Cabernet and Cabernet-driven blends. “Stellenbosch is Cabernet country,” says winemaker Bertho van der Westhuizen, only the fifth winemaker in the estate’s 80-year history. The highest farm on the Helderberg, Alto’s terroir is ideal for Cabernet, with warm northfacing slopes, cooling sea breezes off False Bay, and elevated vineyards. While the single-varietal Cabernet is a hallmark of the estate, the remarkable MPHS blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc is also well worth a taste. It is also a good example of the estate’s reputation for wines with “powerful elegance” that can be enjoyed young, but also aged for a decade or more. Up and over Helshoogte Pass, you’ll find wonderful Cabernet at Thelema Mountain Vineyards and Delaire Graff Estate, but do also push on to scenic Oldenburg Vineyards. “Our climate is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon: not too hot, but warm enough in the daytime, and with cool nights,” says winemaker Philip Costandius, whose single-varietal Cabernet Franc is also worth a taste at the elegant mountainside tasting room.

rniston lies in the southernmost part of the Cape about 200km from the city. It’s not far from Cape Agulhas – which is the furthest point south in Africa that you can reach. Now, you might think that that’s really going to the ends of the earth for an overnight stay. Yes, it is quite a road trip, but when it’s in search of a touch of adventure, then the drive out there is right on track. Once you arrive, the real unwinding can begin.
The village
Arniston is a quaint little fishing village peppered with white beach houses that speak of summer. I’ve always wanted to visit Arniston Spa Hotel. It’s perfectly located at the centre of the town with the ocean on the horizon as its backdrop, and colourful, characteristic fishing boats sitting to the left of it. There’s something instantly relaxing about sitting and watching the waves, especially from the hotel’s balcony.
DID YOU KNOW? The Arniston was a ship that made eight voyages before it was wrecked in 1815 during a storm at Waenhuiskrans. In fact, the town was called Waenhuiskrans right before the loss of the ship. It’s named that way because of the massive local sea cave which is so big that a wagon could turn inside it.
EXPERIENCE IT FOR YOURSELF: Arniston Spa Hotel 028 445 9000 arnistonhotel.com
With the bistro and bar right there, there’s no need to change location.
Stay
The Arniston Spa Hotel has a friendly atmosphere about it. Guests come from all over the world and enjoy the surrounds. To my surprise the hotel is also very family-oriented, which I find quite refreshing. Children play joyfully on the front lawn while parents unwind nearby. The hotel is made up of rooms that offer luxury sea-facing options on different levels, as well as suites or pool-facing rooms. The rooms are classy and comfy with all the added extras that make staying there homely.
Explore
The other major attraction about Arniston is visiting the renowned Waenhuiskrans Cave. Translated to mean “wagon house cliff ”, it is the highlight of coming out this way. It’s a short but intense hike over the sand dunes before you descend to a rocky pathway that leads to the cave. The cave can only be accessed at low tide, so be sure to wear shoes with a good grip for walking over the slippery rocks. It’s well worth it once you get there and I’m happy to report I’m fitter than when I first tried it. Staring out at the sea through this majestic cave never loses its wonder, and that’s what I came here for.

On the wall WORDS: CHRIS REID
IMAGES: MUTINA & ROBIN SPRONG
W
allpaper comes and goes as a trend as people gravitate towards patterned or plain walls. We’re currently seeing wall coverings come back into favour, and as tastes in art and design have evolved, so have their designs. The trend now is towards bold styles that draw the eye in – from trompe l’oeil images to more abstract designs that capture the eye with immersive patterns – rather than demure treatments that fade into the background. This trend has filtered down from higher-end, conceptual designs, where actual 3-D treatments are applied to walls to give them extra depth – visually and physically. Brands like Mutina, for example, offer a variety of patterns as tiled panels to create striking feature walls in the home. Translating this to wallpaper means that designers are attempting to create depth in their products without needing to layer the construction. Locally, offerings like Tiphaine Alston’s designs for Robin Sprong do this with a flat graphic form that uses colour and patterns to create a sense of texture. This more dynamic approach to wall coverings points to a broader shift in design. What was once considered tasteful – plain colour and unobtrusive prints – is now somewhat passé, and the new neutrals are more organic and structural. While this approach is obviously not something for every room of the house, the modern homeowner is more likely to experiment than their predecessors. This means that walls are not the backdrops to bolder designs – they are the canvas.

Asian Beef Tacos The meat:
♦ 1 kg rump steak ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦
The marinade: ½ C dark soya sauce ½ C rice vinegar ½ C canola oil ¼ C brown sugar 3 Tbsp sesame oil 2 Tbsp honey
The tacos:
Words & images: BeerCountrySA
♦ 1 Tbsp Chinese five spice ♦ 1 tsp ginger, finely chopped ♦ 1 tsp garlic, finely chopped ♦ 1 tsp green chilli, finely chopped ♦ 1 small handful coriander,
finely chopped ♦ 2 whole spring onions, chopped ♦ Juice of 1 lime
1 pack Santa Anna’s tacos (from Wellness Warehouse) 1 bag sliced red pickled onions (from Woolworths) 1 small red cabbage, sliced A small handful of bean sprouts 2 spring onions, chopped 1 red or orange pepper, deseeded and sliced 2 red chillies, sliced 1 avo, diced Sesame seeds
capebrewing.co.za/LoveTheJourney/
Method:
Start by mixing all the ingredients for the marinade in a large plastic container until combined. Then place the meat in the marinade and give it a good coating. Place a lid on the container and leave it in the fridge to marinate for a few hours - overnight is even better. Remove the meat container from the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temperature. Remove the steak from the marinade then pour the marinade into a small sauce pot and set aside. Braai the steak over very hot coals for about 2-3 minutes a side for rare, or cook to your liking. Remove the steak from the fire and let it rest for at least 5 minutes. While the steak is resting, heat your marinade to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Cut the steak into thin strips then lightly season it with salt and pepper. Heat a few tacos in a frying pan to warm. Now you’re ready to build your tacos. Build a layer of veggies in any order that works for you then add the steak. Drizzle some warm marinade over the steak then top with avo, and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Dive in, smash it, and then wash it all down with a Cape Brewing Company Pale Ale.
The serve:
♦ Hoisin sauce ♦ Sriracha or Tabasco sauce

For mom
Want to make your mom feel appreciated this Mother’s Day? Here’s how WORDS: BRIDGET MCNULTY
•

I
f you’re looking for a foolproof way to spoil your mom, look no further. Here are some of our best tips to put a smile on her face this Mother’s Day, and make her feel pampered and loved.
Foot rub
Who doesn’t love a foot massage? Your mom will sing your praises for treating her tired feet. Fill up a bowl with warm soapy water and let your mom soak her feet for a few minutes, then dry them off and rub moisturising lotion into them, focusing on relaxing each toe and the sole of the foot with gentle massaging circles. Let your mom watch her favourite TV show or listen to music while she sits back and relaxes.
Manis and pedis
Pretend you’re running a spa from home and make your mom feel like your number one customer. Offer her a drink, settle her on a chair and make sure she’s comfortable, and then spend some time
massaging her hands and feet, rubbing in cuticle cream and painting her nails. The end result is not only a relaxed mom, but one with beautiful hands and feet.
Candlelit bath
The easiest way to pamper your mom is an oldie but a goodie. Run her a warm bubble bath, light some candles, put on some soothing music and make sure she has a magazine and something to drink in easy reaching distance. Then leave her to relax and unwind for an hour while you tidy up the house or prepare dinner!
of all the meals and she doesn’t have to think about anything… What more could any mom ask for? Aside from a whole lot of hugs and kisses, that is.
WITH LOVE FROM DAD: •
Slave for a day
Want to really make your mom’s day? Offer to be her slave for the day. What does that mean? Anything she wants, you’ll get it! Cup of tea? Breakfast in bed? A favourite chocolate from the shop down the road? No problem. For one day, she can get you to do all the little jobs she wants done around the house, you’re in charge

Spa treatments: you can’t go wrong booking her a massage or facial as a gift. Jewellery: choose something sparkly that will remind her daily of how loved she is. Clothing: update her wardrobe with a fashion item from her favourite brand. Flowers: brighten up her day with a bunch of her favourite bloom.

Celebrate your mother every day
W
e can all agree that moms are undeniably special. They’re a treasure trove of love and hugs. This Mother’s Day we asked the moms at Neighbourhood what the day means to them. Happy Mother’s Day, moms!
On Mother’s Day I’m reminded that I’m capable, caring, creative, charismatic and one of a kind. It’s important for moms to know that they’re appreciated, more than they’ll ever know.

On trend Want to know what’s in vogue for 2016? WORDS & IMAGE: DECOREX SA
D
ecorating your home is something that most of us dream about, yet often don’t know where to start. Until now. Here are four of this year’s trends to consider, brought to you by forecasters at Decorex SA.
1. More raw
Organic materials continue to dominate in full force. Concrete, stone, timber and raw fibres are both reassuringly sustainable and bring to interiors a textural quality that cannot be easily simulated by manufactured products. Last year saw metals enter the fray, and these maintain a strong presence – think versatile leather, unfussy linen and bleached cotton pairing with luxurious mohair on the one hand, and functional industrial steel on the other.
2. Colour craze
The new season’s colour cards are inspired by nature’s vibrant brights again. For summer it’s the juncture between lemon and lime, and zesty citron, especially when mediated by white. The kitchen lends itself to a retro edge – laminates, linoleum and wall tiles. Coral pink, on the other
hand, is smartened with accents of teal and marsala and even combined with traditional blue and white for a modern interpretation of beach-house chic.
3. Going tribal
To start with, we’re looking to homes for inspiration. The Mother Continent continues to seduce with inspiration taken from here. The rich patterning and saturated colours of Ndebele wall art enter modern interiors, where the emphasis is on symmetry and repetition. Bright geometrics and monochromatic stripes zigzag over walls and beyond, blurring the boundaries between floor and ceiling.
4. Pearl quality
Transparency is key to this year’s look and both pastel-stained glass and Perspex are loved for their reflective qualities. The ephemeral hues of the oyster shell, pearlescent brocades, and Jacquard weaves, replace starched linens and gossamer voiles, their heavily embroidered detailing bringing shimmering depth to monochromatic interiors. While undeniably opulent, the look still retains an air of lightheartedness and playfulness.

House price inflation declining
What the H economy needs most
ouse price inflation at the end of February was recorded at 5,2%, according to Lightstone’s latest House Price Index. As has been seen over the past six months, house price inflation has slowly been declining. Over the past 12 months this same decline was also seen in the high and luxury segments of the property market. The mid and lower segments, however, showed signs of resilience amid tough economic conditions and increased over the same period.
A
senior executive at one of South Africa’s largest listed companies recently made the comment that the debacle over Nhlanhla Nene’s dismissal as minister of finance last year may have been a blessing in disguise. This is because the fallout sparked a new level of engagement between the government and business to try to find solutions to this country’s economic problems. Some might argue that this is South African optimism at its extreme, but there can be little doubt that there has been a renewed sense of cooperation between these two sectors of society. In particular, Minister Pravin Gordhan has been eager to invite captains of industry to help the Treasury do what is necessary to try to prevent a credit downgrade from the international ratings agencies.
This is a simple equation. New entrants into the workforce will have better prospects of finding work and earning good incomes if they are well-educated and possess the skills that business needs. At the same time, businesses will be more productive if these skills are available when and where they need them. There may be many other things that need to be addressed, and a great deal else that South Africa needs to get right, but it really all starts there. Fixing the education system and focusing on skills development should be the government’s biggest empowerment objective. Hopefully the renewed engagement with business will make this abundantly clear.
Just as importantly, building a modern economy requires the right kind of workforce. PwC’s 19th Annual Global CEO Survey found that the majority of South African CEOs believe that government action is most needed in exactly this area. South Africa cannot hope to prosper unless its citizens have the right levels of education and the desired skills.
80% of South African CEOs believe that a skilled, educated and adaptable workforce should be the government’s top priority

Building your own home gives you the freedom to design a dream home exactly to your specifications. On the downside, unexpected delays or bad workmanship can cause it to come in at a higher cost than your expectations or budget. It is therefore imperative for you to use a professional architect and reputable contractor.

Prime global rental markets down K The performance of prime global rental markets is intrinsically linked to each city’s employment market and in particular the professional
However, this needs to extend a long way beyond just the short-term goal of not being downgraded this year. What South Africa needs badly is a vision for what kind of economy we want to build here and how we make it inclusive. It takes leadership to get people to unite behind a common goal. The 2010 Soccer World Cup has become a clichéd example of South Africans all getting behind a single purpose, but it did show what is possible.
This trend seems to have come to an end though as signs of the mid-value segment’s inflation peaking is becoming apparent. This means the effects of the tough economic conditions have nearly filtered through the majority of the economy.
night Frank’s Prime Global Rental Index, which tracks the change in luxury residential rents across 17 cities globally, fell by 1,1% in 2015, down from growth of 2,5% in 2014.
This is very encouraging because economies will always struggle to grow when the government and business are not supporting each other. There needs to be a sense of common purpose.

services sector. Muted performance in equity markets and record low commodity prices contributed to the index’s weaker performance in 2015.
Guangzhou, China, remained the strongest performing city recording annual rental growth of 5,3% in 2015. This is despite market conditions being favourable for buyers with record low interest rates and a relaxation of
financing for second homes and foreign buyer restrictions in China last year. Some of the world’s top financial centres have shown divergence in terms of the performance of prime rents. Rents fell in Hong Kong (0,8%) and Singapore (3,8%) whereas Tokyo, New York and London recorded a rise in prime rents year-on-year of 3,3%, 2,4% and 0,7% respectively.
Demand bolsters housing markets Housing markets in and around the metro hubs of Pretoria and Sandton continue to enjoy growth, as does the burgeoning KwaZulu-Natal North Coast node and the increasingly sought-after Cape Town Metro. Growing congestion in Gauteng areas, coupled with improved public transport, is allowing neighbouring suburbs which offer accessibility and affordability, to benefit from robust buyer demand. ANDREW GOLDING, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, PAM GOLDING PROPERTY GROUP
Africa’s first multibillion rand car-free village S wisatec, an architectural and project-management firm based in Cape Town, is set to build the first multibillion rand green village in Somerset West, Cape Town.
The village will be car-free with all parking to be underground, while apartments will use energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, watermanagement systems from showers to
irrigation, solar water-heating systems, and self-generated solar power. Environmentally friendly building materials and methods will be used during construction, Swisatec said. Plans for the mixed-use Blue Rock Village include a multifunctional lifestyle centre, medical centres, boutiques, schools and colleges, nurseries, restaurants and cafes.
The development will comprise 1,000 luxury apartments built on 40ha of land.
Lukas Reichmuth, founder and director of Blue Rock Village, said the project would be market-driven, focusing on both the international and the South African markets. Units will start from R3,4m, at R40,000/m2.

I have lived in Welgedacht Estate for over 15 years and I won’t ever leave. The peace of mind and feeling of relaxation is what makes it for me. My children have been able to grow up living outdoors and walking around the secure streets alongside their friends. I love the Southern Suburbs, I love the city, I love the V&A Waterfront, but I absolutely love coming back home to Welgedacht TERESA FOURIE, RESIDENT
About the area W
The upmarket suburb is host to a number of security estates which offer safe living without compromising on quality of life. One of the largest is the expansive Welgedacht Estate, which hosts properties that are impressive in size and personalised style. You can meander along the rolling lawns and scenic pathways with your children
and pets, and the parks and duck ponds make you feel at one with nature. Other estates in this area include the Kanonberg Lifestyle Estate, Oude Westhof, Van Riebeeckshof and Protea Valley. If you’re a keen golfer, the Bellville Golf Club is only five minutes away, and Durbanville Golf Club is less than a 20-minute drive. There is also a nearby squash and tennis club. The suburb neighbours the exquisite Tygerberg Nature Reserve and the Maijk Forest, which offer a range of activities for the whole family. These include cycling paths and walking trails that allow you to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounds.

A two-bedroom cottage in this peaceful, green suburb might cost you R2,6m, while a five-bedroom family home on a 2,300m2 property could go for R13,5m. Investing in this area has seen a wonderful return in the recent past, with certain property values growing by an average of 20% year on year. The limited availability and the high demand for luxurious security-estate living has made this a highly sought-after location.
dentist, medical doctor and mothercare services. In addition, there are extensive health-care facilities and shopping centres within easy reach in Panorama, Plattekloof and Durbanville. The suburb has access to Tygerburg Valley Road and De Bron Road which lead into the Durbanville Wine Valley route. Getting onto the N1 to Paarl or Cape Town will only take 10 minutes.
For essential amenities, the Van Riebeekshof Shopping Centre provides a Superspar as well as the Welmed Medical Centre, which houses a physiotherapist,
This truly is a beautifully landscaped green belt where the sense of community allows for a peaceful upbringing for your children within a beautiful suburb that provides a different view of Cape Town altogether.
Q: What type of buyer is drawn to Welgedacht? A: The affluent buyer, professionals and businesspeople alike who are nature-loving and appreciate secure living. It’s for the individual looking for properties that will consistently deliver a high return on investment, someone who is not deterred by the current economic climate. Buyers who want to put their own stamp of individuality on their homes, can choose the architectural design of their property in Welgedacht, and do not have to be limited by one or two designs, as is the case with some other estates.
Q: What attracts buyers to Welgedacht? A: It offers top-notch security and wide open spaces interspersed with water – just an all-round fabulous environment where you can still enjoy the outdoors in a secure environment. Investing here also means that you are surrounded by top-class real estate that will further enhance the value of your investment. The slightly elevated position means that the estate enjoys lovely views. Apart from a fabulous setting, it also has top schools and great infrastructure right on your doorstep.

Agent commentary Q: How has the area changed over the past five years? A: In general house prices in Welgedacht Estate and surrounding areas in the Northern Suburbs have increased drastically in the past five years. Last year, we experienced phenomenal growth in Welgedacht on newly-renovated properties. The reason being that there are hardly any plots available in Welgedacht Estate and surrounding areas like Kanonberg, Oude Westhof, Van Riebeeckshof, Protea Valley, Kenridge, Welgemoed and Loevenstein. Due to the popularity of these areas, buyers and investors are prepared to buy in the area, renovate the property and either sell it to make a profit, or buy-to-rent because of demand.

Shopping for passports Investing in foreign property is not as simple as it seems WORDS: DAVID A STEYNBERG

ith a growing number of countries vying to attract international property investors, the time has never been better to do a spot of passport shopping. But, warns James Bowling, international CEO and founder, Monarch & Co, maintaining an investment in a foreign country isn’t the only requirement for residency or citizenship.
always be covered by comprehensive international health insurance. “Citizens have full access to free state education and health care in their country of citizenship, should it be available in that country,” says Bowling. “A citizen from an EU country registered in the national health-care system can attend any educational or health-care facility in any other EU country.”
“Investors can lose their residence or citizenship status if they don’t meet other requirements, such as a minimum stay,” says Bowling. He notes, for example, that the UK requires investors to make the country their primary residence by spending at least 50% of their time there, while Malta residence holders can’t spend more than 183 days a year in another jurisdiction.
In Portugal, however, you need to be a citizen contributing to social security as a taxpayer living and working in Portugal to qualify for free health care and education, according to Chris Immelman, MD, Pam Golding Properties International and Projects Division. He says residency doesn’t provide holders with free health care or education, though they have access to it.
When it comes to the perks such as free education and health care, the rules are different for citizens and residents. Residency holders are entitled to receive free state education only in the country of residency, and should
Some countries, such as China, don’t acknowledge dual citizenship. Investors would therefore have to sacrifice their current citizenship in return for the new one. “SA recognises dual citizenship, so our investors don’t have to worry,” says Bowling.
