Single vineyard surprises Haskell Vineyards’ focus on showcasing the terroir of single vineyards makes their superb Syrah range worth the spend WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

I wouldn’t want to live anywhere besides Stellies, I’m a small-town girl and Stellenbosch is the best dorpie around TANYA GROBLER, RESIDENT

S

tretching across 25ha of the famed Golden Triangle beyond Stellenbosch, Haskell Vineyards focuses firmly on the stars of this corner of the Helderberg: Syrah and Bordeauxstyle reds. But it’s Syrah that is the star of the show here, thanks to winemaker Rianie Strydom’s impressive Single Vineyard Series (SVS) that taps into the character of unique vineyard sites to create a collection of thoroughly independent wines. To start discovering the Single Vineyard Series, begin with the Aeon. It’s a Syrah bursting with red fruit, perfume and spice, and pays tribute to the ancient granite and sandstone soils that give vineyards in this corner of the Helderberg such character. Next up is Pillars, the elegant flagship that tips a hat to the columns at the entrance to the estate. In 2009, the Pillars 2007 became the first South African wine to win Best Wine of Show at the Tri Nations Challenge, beating wines from Australia and New Zealand. The most recent addition to the series is the Hades, its name a tribute of sorts to the hellish nature of the vineyard – 180t of rock had to be removed from the site before the first vines could even be planted. When they finally got their roots in the ground, half failed to survive the tough conditions. That was back in 2007, and “although the vineyard has matured extremely slowly, today it produces small yields of eminent quality Syrah”, says Strydom. “Hades is the perfect ending to a nine-year tale of distinct and exceptional terroir. It's a tale of perseverance and persistence of beauty and aroma and a perfect conclusion to the Single Vineyard Series.”

Franschhoek

Did you know? The 27km railway line that was built between Paarl and Franschhoek in 1904, was repurposed in 2012 for the Franschhoek Wine Tram.

In addition to the trio of Syrah, the SVS also includes the wonderful Anvil Chardonnay, a rounded Chardonnay with plenty of complexity and well-integrated oak character. Price-wise these are all special-occasion wines, but Haskell Vineyards also produce the more affordable – but still excellent – Dombeya range. Look out for their spicy Boulder Road Shiraz.

3 Noordhoek

There are numerous things to keep you busy in Noordhoek – everything from wine tastings, horse rides on the beach, and shopping at the neighbourhood markets, to hikes in the surrounding countryside.

La Table du Chef A leisurely afternoon of fun, fabulous food and fine wine at The Foodbarn Chef’s Table WORDS & IMAGE: KIT HEATHCOCK

T

here’s a sybaritic appeal to starting the weekend at Friday lunch, especially at the Foodbarn Chef’s Table, where chef Franck Dangereux pushes his creative boundaries, inventing new dishes paired to the cellar treasures of one of his winemaker friends.

Finding bliss at Boschendal Taking some time out at one of South Africa’s most prestigious wine farms WORDS: LAUREN JOUBERT IMAGES: SUPPLIED

I

t’s not often that I get the chance to explore the beauty of wine farms overnight. When I got the opportunity to represent Neighbourhood at Boschendal, I was ecstatic. With its picturesque backdrop of valleys, mountain ranges, wine estates, coupled with crisp fresh air, Franschhoek is great for the soul. Upon arriving, my fiancé and I were met by friendly security guards who graciously waved us in and I immediately knew why Boschendal’s reputation was so great.

The Werf Cottages

Read more about Lauren’s Boschendal adventure on the Neighbourhood website (yourneighbourhood.co.za).

The luxe Werf accommodation we stayed in exceeded my expectations by far. The expansive mountain views and modern amenities, combined with cosy decor, pays respect to the heritage of the farm, which is one of the oldest in the Western Cape.

“It’s vital that we all start living in a way that is gentle to the planet. This extends to travel opportunities. By choosing to holiday locally at places like Boschendal, people can participate in ecological initiatives while uplifting the local community. It turns out that a simple farm life experience might be the best nourishment for the soul,” says Rykie van Tonder, general manager: hospitality, Boschendal. The Werf Cottages are bordered by the Simonsberg and Drakenstein Mountain ranges, which we thoroughly enjoyed waking up to, before nibbling on our delivered breakfast picnic box.

The Werf Restaurant

Our dinner at the Werf Restaurant was otherworldly. The melt-inyour-mouth beef with wine pairing left us comfortably full and ready to take a slow walk back to our luxe cottage in the fresh night air.

Menu inspiration

“The foundation of our menu is built on two words: ‘passion’ and ‘ingredients’. Literally on our doorstep we have access to 9ha of vegetable gardens, a supply of pasture-reared eggs, free-range broiler chickens, Angus beef, the occasional forest-reared pig, farmed oyster mushrooms, and – when the conditions are right – wild mushrooms from our forests. Produce from the farm drives our menu, and fuels our inspiration,” explains chef Christiaan Campbell. “Working closely with all the producers and butchery on the farm, we have an idea of what will be available over the coming days. We have to make use of it all. The Werf team put their heads together to best showcase awesome ingredients prepared with passion, the net result being farm dining that Werf is becoming renowned for,” he says.

The May Chef’s table was one of firsts: Matthew Day of Klein Constantia had challenged Franck to a whole meal paired with the estate’s various Sauvignon Blancs, something neither of them had tried before. Seven courses, eight different wines all from the same varietal. “The biggest misconception about Sauvignon Blanc is that you need to drink it on year of release,” Matt told us. “We need to change that. It’s an incredible varietal, it’s the cultivar that expresses a sense of place more than any other.” Franck rose to the challenge with some intriguing gutsy dishes. Fynbos smoked mussels with citrus, seaweed, oysters and togarashi launched us off in style and the Organic 2015 held its own with the strong flavours. Next, we sampled two vintages of the Klein Constantia Estate, herby 2010 and smooth buttery 2003, together with a scallop sashimi with grapefruit and spinach. Roasted

celeriac and chevre paired beautifully with the classic Metis 2015. With four glasses lined up, we got into the spirit of comparative tasting, all now convinced of the versatility of Sauvignon Blanc. Single vineyard wines accompanied the next dishes, the Perdeblokke 2015, light and very elegant, paired with steamed white fish in a gorgeous grape and cassis fondue, picking up the fruit in the wine. Block 382 showed a deeper side to Sauvignon Blanc and paired with our “meat” course, a rich seared quail. Then we enjoyed an earlier, mellow vintage of the same block with Bayonne ham, raclette and tangy pickled mushrooms. Conversation and laughter levels had risen as the afternoon progressed, the fun and informality encouraged by Franck’s intuitive, unpretentious approach to pairing. “I just sip the wine and think what would work with that. Sometimes a pairing isn’t for me about trying to retrieve an element of the wine in the food, it just washes down nicely. Sometimes that’s all it is.” Finishing off with an autumnal dessert of chestnut mousse, almond milk ice cream and quince with the 2002 Noble Late Harvest, was a decadently rich end to an adventurous feast of flavours. The next Chef’s Table is on 28 July.

A fresh start Tips for moving into your new retirement pad WORDS: ANDRÉ FIORE

IMAGE: ISTOCK

W

hile moving to a retirement home comes with its own challenges, it can also be a great time to declutter and reinvent. Downsizing can open doors for a whole new look and feel and a sense of renewal as years of unnecessary possessions are discarded or donated. Here are some tips:

Take it easy

Moving is always stressful, so set small goals and allow yourself time to move without having to make hasty decisions. Make lists that help you decide what to take, and what to do, and prep and pack well in advance so you have time to enjoy the move. You’ll no doubt have possessions you won’t have space for, so consider donating heirlooms and practical items to relatives (or a charity) and selling other unwanted items. Then you can do or buy something special with the proceeds.

Take a friend

Visit your new pad with a friend or relative and decide on effective furnishing solutions together. Measure the spaces and take some photos and have these

with you when you’re shopping for items to fit the new space.

Paint it

Whether it’s a bright new look, a colour you haven’t tried before, a dramatic feature wall, or a good clean neutral, a lick of paint can refresh and update almost any area. Hygienic, cost effective and easy to change, paint is a great way to get a fresh result fast. Don’t discard the possibility of giving an item of furniture a coat of paint too – an old brown cupboard can be transformed into a glossy showpiece in a flash.

Get clever

Storage is often one of the biggest challenges when moving to a smaller space, so get crafty with storage and spacing solutions. Large mirrors on cupboard doors take up no room of their own, but add a sense of space and light, besides being useful. Under-bed storage, drawers, and storage baskets on wheels, creates space for linen, towels and bulky bedding. A bedside table with drawers and shelves makes place for watches, pens, medication, creams, chargers and books. A storage ottoman offers space inside, as well as doubling as an extra seat, table or footstool.

TICK LIST: • Before choosing a retirement village, check whether other residents are happy with it. • Check whether the establishment offers a step-up to assisted living or frail care. • Research different pricing structures, the establishment’s liquidity, what services are included and which are individually billed. • Visit kitchens, bathrooms and laundries to see how they’re maintained. • Discuss menus, possible dietary requirements and choose an establishment where meals are sociable. • Check whether the establishment offers amenities such as a recreation centre, hairdresser, shop, library and transport to shops and doctors.

Who is the "new" Sembel-It?

In 2013 South Africa's largest independent kitchen manufacturer, The Kitchen Studio, acquired the Sembel-It brand. The Kitchen Studio is one the country’s most celebrated kitchen manufacturers, boasting an array of accolades and achievements in its 23 year history. As Sembel - It's new parent company, The Kitchen Studio has brought a wealth of industry know - how and leading edge design to Sembel-it and has ushered in an exciting and promising new era for the brand.

What was the purpose of The Kitchen Studio acquiring Sembel -It?

Both The Kitchen Studio and Sembel-It have always had a strong presence in their respective markets. Whilst The Kitchen Studio concentrated on the higher end and became well known for its high quality fittings, a wide range of finishes, "no chipboard kitchens" and innovative design, Sembel-it, who was Africa's largest kitchen manufacturer, concentrated on Africa, developments and the middle market. They were the first company in the country to introduce PVC wrap doors and also established themselves through a European modular system of component manufacturing. This simply meant that they pre-manufactured most of their kitchen and bedroom components which allowed them to offer the highest quality products at the lowest possible price with the shortest turnaround time. With a large existing infrastructure already in place and a short supply of high quality, reliable mid ranged kitchen suppliers, it seemed like an ideal opportunity for The Kitchen Studio to use Sembel-It as its vehicle to fill this gap in the market. Sembel-It will also benefit from its parent company's bulk purchasing power, direct imports of Hettich & Blum hinges and drawer runners, Niemann & Losan acrylic, Blanco sinks, Sige chrome accessories, Falmec and Elica extractors and a variety of other components essential to the manufacture of its high quality products.

What is the difference between The Kitchen Studio and Sembel-It?

The Kitchen Studio will continue to offer the widest range of " no chipboard" purpose made kitchens and bedrooms in any finish, shape or size imaginable. Sembel-It will concentrate on manufacturing and installing a range of the most popular finishes and sizes at the best possible prices.

With so many kitchen suppliers around what makes Sembel-It better/ different? With Sembel-It benefiting from an established infrastructure and very little factory overhead costs, It is in a position to offer unbeatable value on their kitchens and bedrooms. While much of the kitchen industry are essentially carcass manufacturers with a small range of in-house door offerings, Sembel-It has ready access to a wide range of top quality finishes without having to buy out their doors. Granite, Marble and Quartz which are supplied in - house by The Granite Studio. For more information on our products, please visit our spectacular showroom where you can chat to one of our experienced kitchen design consultants or call us on 011 465 2835 Alternatively you can email your plans or kitchen dimensions to info@sembel-it.co.za and we will get back to you with an estimate.

CBD

Here’s what’s happening in property in the area

WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

L

iving in the CBD is all about being close to the heart of Cape Town, feeling the buzz. The residents who choose to live there love the noisy, gritty, urban energy of it, the cafe culture, and being able to walk everywhere. The resurgence of the city centre over the last two decades has been fed by the number of small creative businesses establishing themselves there, as well as the international big businesses. “There’s so much going on, there’s so much to draw from,” comments Max Botha, owner, Hokey Poke, who has lived here since he left school. “It’s a community but there are so many foreigners, foreign influences and global exposure that every day feels like a new experience. We live in a city that's almost at the forefront, pushing trends and developing change rather than following it. As a creatively inclined person, it’s very inspiring.” Open street events such as the monthly First Thursdays have encouraged that creative influx, with galleries opening late and people from all over Cape Town walking the streets late into the evening. As it’s got bigger and more popular, for some First Thursdays is just another party, but the element of creative collaboration, of catching up with what’s happening and the latest influences, still drives the event. As traffic has intensified for commuters coming into town from the suburbs, the attraction of living at the hub, of being able to walk to work, has increased exponentially. “I like the

IMAGES: NAZREEN ESSACK & SUPPLIED

noise and find the suburbs too quiet,” says John Morrison, owner, Que Pasa Dance Studio. “I have more time to get stuff done, because I don’t waste time commuting. It takes a certain type of person to enjoy town, the noise that comes with a busy lifestyle and the convenience of having access to everything close by.” There’s so much on the doorstep, from everyday essentials to excellent restaurants, cafes, pubs and artisan food outlets, live performances from local bands and cutting edge exhibitions, not only on the trendy hub of Bree Street but spreading down through Loop Street, Church Street and Long Street. And it’s not only about the new. Old establishments that have been there for years are part of the fabric of the city, and that mix of rough edges and rawness, together with people from all walks of life, fuels the energy too. The Cape Town City Improvement District works to keep streets clean and maintains a presence of police officers, which contributes to a general sense of safety. For a green refuge from the streets, a walk in The Company’s Garden refreshes the spirit, and the City Bowl gives way quickly to the mountain slopes, so a hike up Lion’s Head or around Table Mountain can be part of the urban lifestyle too. Cycle around the shore to Sea Point promenade for some ocean energy, or make use of the frequent MyCiti bus routes to head to the beach. But even within the CBD, you feel the uniqueness of Cape Town living with amazing views of Table Mountain, Lions Head and the harbour at every turn.

Ultimately it’s the buzz in the air. Living in the CBD you can feel things shifting, you can feel Cape Town creatively bubbling, which is why I haven’t moved anywhere else. MAX BOTHA, OWNER, HOKEY POKE

Agent Insight Local property experts give us the inside scoop on the CBD

What makes property in the CBD such a good investment?

What do you love about living in the CBD?

The city is in its early stages of urbanisation and over the next two decades, will become a significant economic hub. This will continue to attract residents as people want to work closer to where they live and adopt an urban-living lifestyle such as that in London, New York and Hong Kong. Cape Town is also the most visited tourist destination in the country and we have already seen massive improvements in the city’s transportation network and investment, safety and security and efforts to stimulate its appeal.

Besides the obvious bounty of restaurants and design-centric shops, the best part is the increased walkability of our CBD. What used to be restricted to small pockets has now rapidly expanded, linking multiple nodes of the city and creating widespread access that encourages the use of alternative modes of transport. This tipping point directly and indirectly influences other factors such as supporting niche businesses, safety and culture which ultimately leads to more integrated cities.

Property Sales Centre opens at Sitari Country Estate

S

itari Country Estate, which has just won Best Residential Development in Africa 2016/2017 at the International Property Awards, opened the doors to its state of the art Sitari Property Sales Centre on 1 June. The Property Sales Centre is situated just off the R102 at the Sitari main entrance gatehouse. Says Claudius Combrinck, executive director, Sitari Property Sales, “The intention with this facility is to showcase the diverse range of properties on offer and the sophisticated character of Sitari Country Estate. The Property Sales Centre will afford interested parties the opportunity to view a large-scale physical model of the estate, drone progress videos, and 3-D virtual reality tours. Also on display are appliances by some of our German

and Italian brand partners, including Miele, Grohe and Smeg, all of which are used in Sitari’s properties.” Adds Combrinck: “Being recognised internationally and as Best Residential Development in Africa, really inspires us to do even more to realise the full potential offered by Sitari. We are in the midst of final preparations to release some new and exciting home and apartment products to market that will no doubt trigger much interest. The professional team has managed to combine all of the right elements to create a very successful estate that offers a range of property options, a flagship Curro School, shopping centre, Country Clubhouse, and numerous landscaped parks and recreational spaces, including an entire restored wetland.

Because buying a property is such a big decision that can have a massive impact on your financial well-being, it’s best to go into each transaction fully aware of what you’re getting yourself into. HouseME to dramatically benefit Gauteng’s residential rental market

H

ouseME is a digital rental management platform that has taken the residential property market by storm since its launch in the Western Cape less than a year ago. HouseME’s free tenant-screening, coupled with a tenant-rating system, incentivises responsible behaviour, while the transparent bidding mechanism allows tenants to bid on properties they really want, and guarantees fair price to landlords. “We connect dream tenants to great landlords, and facilitate a mutually beneficial relationship between them,” says HouseME’s CEO, Ben Shaw. HouseME’s 2,5% management fee – which includes the free rental guarantee – landed well with clients

in Cape Town, where HouseME already has more than 1,300 landlords and 1,400 tenants registered on its system – making it larger than many long-established industry players. In July, HouseME is extending its service footprint to Gauteng, and introducing new property management suites that provide options for hands-off landlords who want specific services without paying a large monthly retainer. Shaw says the transparency and efficiencies realised through their platform allows expert, on-demand services to be available to landlords at a fraction of traditional fees. “In Cape Town, every single landlord who was offered these services has chosen them over the current traditional alternatives.”

New hotel added to a leading residential estate

P

earl Valley Hotel by Mantis, found in the Cape Winelands, has opened its doors. While the Winelands offers much in the way of amenities and activities, the estate on which the hotel is located – Val de Vie – also provides guests with a wide selection of amenities. The estate includes polo fields and a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, which has drawn interest from locals and internationals alike. Horse riding sessions, wine tastings and many more activities are on offer. The first phase of the hotel, now complete, comprises 38 rooms

orientated to maximise the incredible views of the estate, the valley and the mountains beyond. The Clubhouse, located 100m away, is easily accessible by golf cart or a short walk away. Adrian Gardiner, founder, the Mantis Collection, shares, “The Pearl Valley Hotel by Mantis is set in one of the world’s most breath-taking regions – both in scenic beauty and in terms of all it has to offer visitors. The Paarl-Franschhoek Valley is a dream destination for couples, business travellers, golf enthusiasts and families and we’re thrilled to offer travellers from around the world outstanding accommodation in the heart of this region.”

C

oncern about the environment led Glenda Pieters and Charlene Liedeman to develop a new range of cleaning and personal care products, Naturally Good. They sell from one of the on-street kiosks on Long Street, set up for emerging entrepreneurs to establish new businesses. Glenda tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: We were concerned about harmful chemicals found in ordinary cleaning and personal care products. Our nephew, a chemist, researched and developed a range of natural products and we were his guinea pigs. From there, we wanted to market these safe, effective products. We received fantastic support from the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) and I attended several courses and workshops there. The Khoisan Range is our newest range that is doing very well. Our intention is to make people aware of our amazing Khoisan indigenous knowledge and traditional remedies using plant ingredients, and to make them feel proud of their heritage. This is a 100% natural range of six products and we call it Products with a Purpose. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We were fortunate to be chosen to use the kiosk by the CCDI team from among loads of entrepreneurs. This kiosk is ideal to market our brand and to introduce people in the city to caring for their health and the environment.

Q: How did you find your premises? A: We’re members of the CCDI and applied through them. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The kiosk is surrounded by several government departments and we’re hoping to interest them in our products. We’re trying to make this area more customer-friendly and to promote buying local. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Apart from The Coffee Guy and Bazz Collection, we have the Daddy Long Legs Boutique Hotel, and Embassy Travel. There are three kiosks still to be occupied. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: We’re fortunate to be rent-free and can use this space for a year. We’re hoping to have a longer lease because it takes time to make your mark. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: T here is quite a bit of foot traffic and we’re working on strategies to encourage people to stop and shop. People aren’t familiar with shopping from the pavement. Most of our foot traffic are employees of the restaurants, shops and office blocks in the area. The rest are tourists, but they’re a bit scared to linger in Long Street though. They feel safer in a shop. We’re working on these challenges as well as the vagrant problem in the area, and are looking at ways to create a hub.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We’re using this opportunity as a stepping stone for our own shop one day. We’re doing everything in our power to make this kiosk successful. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We’re busy with our new website which will have an online shop. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our Eco Degreaser, Natural Hand Sanitiser and Eco Air Freshener.

WHAT IS THE 80:20 MODEL?

Blok has selected its FORTY ON L development to pilot an 80:20 housing development model. This involves a bulk departure that will allow Blok to add 20% more apartments to the originally planned scheme. These units (20%), targeted at the middle-income market, will be made more affordable than those in the original scheme (80%) by subsidising their land, finance and planning costs. This research-by-design approach responds to the pressing need for urban housing in well-located areas that incorporates a more diverse set of income ranges. “Not only will the 80:20 development model enable more people to live in the city, it allows services to be delivered more efficiently and more sustainably whilst promoting cultural diversity and economic growth,” comments Rashiq Fataar of Future Cape Town, a consultant to Blok on the 80:20 model. These homes will be released in the coming months through best practice principles that Blok has researched from inspiring cities and leading-edge projects globally. “Our goal with this project is to evolve a model that can be used to illustrate the potential role of developers in shaping our city and to create awareness around their ability to undertake similar projects that will begin to assist in contributing well-located urban housing that is targeted at the middle-income market” says Jacques van Embden, Managing Director of Blok.
