“Along with our altitude, the cool southeasterly is one of the key elements of our terroir,” says winemaker Justin van Wyk, who has headed up the cellar since 2011. Set against the upper slopes of Vlakkenberg Peak, Constantia Glen’s long hours of afternoon sunshine allow for the slow summer ripening that cultivars such as Cabernet Sauvignon enjoy. And with wines carefully crafted “in an Old World style” in reds and whites, the focus here is firmly on Bordeaux. Alongside the excellent Sauvignon Blanc, each wine is named for the number of varieties in the blend. The barrel-fermented Constantia Glen “Two” brings one-third Semillon to balance the Sauvignon Blanc, letting the flagship white wine offer richness and minerality. No wonder the 2014 bagged five stars in the Platter’s Guide. The “Three” blends Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc into a velvety mouthful that is approachable and complex, yet it’s not as complex as the flagship “Five”. A traditional Bordeaux Blend, the “Five” adds Petit Verdot and Malbec to the mix in a wine worthy of its price tag. Typically released five years after vintage, it’s powerful and elegant – drink it now or stash it in the cellar for another five. A little spendy for you? Look out for the red and white in the affordable Constantia Saddle range, available exclusively from the tasting room. The tasting area is housed in the elegantly restored stable buildings,

with a range of spaces to suit the seasons. The open terraces are ideal for warm summer days, while indoors a lounge will beckon when the storms sweep the cape. The conservatory offers the best of both worlds, with glass walls for views and a wood-burning stove for cheer. You’ll find a range of tasting options here, along with superb platters that will tempt you to linger over the wonderful valley views – alongside a small selection of hearty winter soups, generous boards of smoked trout, charcuterie and cheeses. Estate wines are available as a tasting flight, or by the bottle.

ape Town was recently voted the best city in the world in the 2015/2016 Telegraph Travel Awards. Now while our city tends to win awards more often than many probably realise, I think it’s quite a feat to be acknowledged on an international playing field. As the British travel survey proves, Cape Town has got what it takes – and that is the opinion of outsiders. As a local I need no convincing. Standing on the top-floor balcony of the President Hotel on a surprisingly warm winter afternoon, I can only think that this is a magnificent city to live in. The view of the turquoise ocean stretches across the horizon endlessly. It’s amazing to be surrounded by the beauty of nature right in the city. The President Hotel has an enviable location set in the exclusive and mostly wind-free Bantry Bay. It’s a quick stroll to the promenade and other amenities are close by. As I gaze into the sea I reflect on the many reasons to love this city. The people in Cape Town are a big drawcard for me. Whether they’re staff, locals or tourists, they are not only friendly but also interesting. I watch a visiting family take comical photographs as they pretend to push each other into the pool. It’s like a scene from a comedy film, and they aren’t phased by any onlookers. The pool looks like what you would expect in an LA film – massive, crystal-clear, with palm trees bordering it, and the white loungers beckoning bikini beauties who duly arrive to tan in the afternoon sun. That’s location and people covered. But what the hotel does so effortlessly is make you feel at home whether you are there for business or pleasure. From stylish rooms to pleasurable dining, everything you need is at your fingertips. The hotel space is designed to be filled with maximum light which gives it a tranquil and happy feeling throughout. Thinking back to my first hotel experience as a child, this is exactly the kind of magic that you remember. There are many reasons to boast about Cape Town, and a night at the President is a great reminder of why others think so too.

EXPERIENCE IT FOR YOURSELF: President Hotel 021 434 8111 presidenthotel.co.za

tellenbosch was on the cusp of winter when we visited – damp fallen leaves underfoot, and the scent of wood smoke in the air – so the roaring fire that met us inside Jardine Restaurant was a welcome sight. In the first of two rooms there are cobblestones underfoot, plump cushions on benches, blankets over chairs and botanical prints on walls – it’s friendly, unpretentious and intimate. While chef George Jardine continues to win accolades at Jordan Restaurant, where’s he’s been for seven years, Jardine Restaurant, which he opened earlier this year, is his personal space that gives him the freedom to be creative and experiment. “George had his eye on this particular spot for years, but it kept getting snapped up,” recalls his wife, Louise. “By chance I saw on Facebook that it had become available again, and we were just in time.” The refreshingly short menu changes often and just three choices for each course made decision-making easy. There were vegetarian, fish and meat options for the starters and mains, and nothing predictable about any of the dishes – seasonal ingredients, simply presented in tantalising combinations. A light autumnal salad of wild herbs, buffalo mozzarella and pickled mushrooms gained depth from satisfying nuggets of caramelised Jerusalem artichoke. Even the much maligned Brussels sprout was roasted into an appealing

savoury gem. Tender roasted quail was a delightful tapestry of rich flavours, embroidered with aubergine, basil pesto, charred onions and mustard seed. When it came to the main courses, the dish I would return for again and again was the hake baked in pastry. A sublime reinvention of a fish pie, the hake was moist and creamy with a contrasting tang of spinach, surrounded by a velvety mushroom sauce that lifted the whole dish to new heights of rhapsody, studded with dried mushroom flakes, shallots and peppery nasturtium leaves. Valrhona chocolate and hazelnut torte with a kick and crunch of salted caramel was my dessert heaven. The rich granadilla tart and sorbet was also delicious, and the local cheese board arriving at our neighbour’s table looked varied and enticing. There’s a six-course tasting menu if you want to go all out, but we were in the mood for informality and sharing our three courses provided foodie fulfilment in abundance.

Elegantly distressed WORDS: CHRIS REID

IMAGE: CC-TAPIS

T

he trend towards modern heirlooms is an interesting one. We’ve seen designers play with distressed finishes in homeware for a while now, making new pieces look like they’ve survived a few generations. It’s something we’ve seen in all kinds of places – patina-covered metallics, worn wooden elements and any number of folk-inspired ceramics. Now, the same approach is being applied to textiles too, with brands creating pieces that move beyond restrained artistic antiquing to full-on rips, tears and more. This trend is all about techniques like patchwork, faded fabrics, loose fringes and over-dyed pieces. At international furniture fairs we’ve even seen items being blowtorched and acid-splattered to really work the aged look. More than anything else, it’s an interesting (and refreshing) shift from the buttoned-down, often tailored look we’ve seen in pieces over the last few seasons. Internationally, brands such as the trade show favourite, cc-tapis, play

into this look with products like the Oldie collection. The design of these carpets mimics the ravages of time, and the range comes ready-distressed for the discerning interior. Locally, however, we’re mainly seeing retailers play more with salvaged fabrics to create upholstered furniture and rugs. This application of the trend is more consumer-friendly, but plays into the same aesthetic. The appeal here lies in the personalisation these pieces offer. No one else’s rug or furniture piece will have exactly the same look as yours because of the random nature of the manufacturing process. And because the pieces are already rather elegantly distressed, they’ll only get better with age.

My business neighbourhood Starting small, two sisters are selling the richness of South African design on anything from stationery to ceramics and small items

L

eila and Farzanah Badsha are sisters and business partners at Fabricate in Gardens Shopping Centre. All locally designed and made, their products include everything from contemporary craft to ceramics, lighting, stationery, jewellery, gifting and decorative objects. Q: How did your business start? A: Fabricate started as a seasonal pop-up in Cavendish Square initially. We opened the current store in November 2014 as a pop-up because it was an affordable way to test the market and its financial viability. We signed our first permanent lease in April this year. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: It’s an affluent area where shoppers have an appreciation of the importance of supporting local design. Our corner-shop location in the mall is not ideal – we’d prefer to be nearer the anchor tenants because there would be more foot traffic, but we like the natural light.

WORDS: KIM MAXWELL IMAGES: SUPPLIED

Q: How did you find your premises? A: We established a relationship with Gardens Shopping Centre and just kept in contact. Q: Why is it ideally suited to your business? A: This centre combines the traffic of a shopping mall but has the intimacy of old-fashioned neighbourhood shops. People come here because they live nearby. A lot of design shops are intimidating – we hope ours is accessible and welcoming. We’re a platform for the richness of local design. We stock what we think is well made and beautiful and that says something about the people and the place it’s from. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Hello Again locally manufactured casual wear, Ambeans coffee shop and Partners Hair Design.

Q: What are the shop rentals like in this area? A: The rentals offer value for money. We pay more than a shop in Woodstock would but then we have parking, security and high traffic seven days a week. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: On a Saturday we often have 80 to 90 people through the door. They’re a broad age range from high school students to pensioners. Women are in the majority but we have some loyal male customers too. What’s nice is that foot traffic is fairly consistent throughout the week. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, we want to expand into the Southern Suburbs once the Gardens shop is more established. But we are the business; there are no big investors. So when we have the capital, we invest it in things such as signage or shopfitting. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We are on Twitter (@fabricateCT) and Facebook (facebook.com/ FabricateCT), but we mostly concentrate on Instagram (@fabricatecapetown). It brings a lot of people to the shop. Q: What are your most popular items? A: About 90% of the items we stock are things that we like ourselves, whether it’s prints to lighting, cushions or decorative objects. We’re known for our quirky gift cards.

Housing prices rebound countrywide W

hile the South African economy is on all global ratings agencies’ watchlist, the country’s housing market appears to be staging a modest recovery. Those are the findings of the May 2016 Pam Golding Residential Property (PGP) Index. The index shows that after averaging 5,9% during 2015, residential property sales recorded a 7% average increase during the first quarter of 2016.

10,65% in house prices in Q4 2015. This is a continuation of a sustained period where it outperformed the market early 2013. In contrast, house price inflation in Joburg, Durban and Pretoria has remained fairly stable at about 6% during this period. However, prices have accelerated in Pretoria in recent months, with an average increase of 7,6% recorded during the final quarter of 2015.

The Western Cape shows the strongest growth over the longest term, registering an increase of

While houses in the upper price band – more than R2m – register a low growth point of -5,7% nationwide, the

top end is robust in KwaZulu-Natal, averaging 9,6% during Q1 2016. Since late 2014, the top end of the KZN market has been outperforming the Gauteng and Western Cape housing markets, with the surge in houseprice inflation in this region largely attributable to the booming growth nodes along the North Coast. The lower price band – less than R1m – has been the top-performing sector since mid-2015 and continued to accelerate during Q1 2016, with house-price inflation at 10,1%.

We can’t afford to lose our talent F

or some time now South Africa has been losing a number of skilled young people every year. They have been leaving these shores to go to places like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK, where they believe the prospects are more appealing. There are many reasons for this, and they are not getting any less compelling. The current political instability, the threat of violent crime and the worrying state of the South African economy are not small matters.

Buyers, be aware of zoning rules

For young people who have the opportunity to find employment overseas, it is therefore becoming more and more difficult to argue that they should stay. If they have desirable skills that are in demand in these economies, they may well be securing a more certain future for themselves.

Buyers should be aware of what might happen to buildings around them before they sign an offer to purchase, particularly if they are buying a property because of its views or lack of higherstorey buildings surrounding it

It is therefore not surprising that a recent survey found that more than half of current university students in South Africa want to move overseas to find work after they graduate. And while not all of these students will probably end up going, this desire to leave the country is a very harsh reality.

aal Mall topped off its extensive R420m revamp with the 15 June opening of its second building phase. The 15,000m 2 expansion includes a seven-screen SterKinekor cinema complex.

T

Until now, advertising commercial listings has been difficult with various platforms available, but

none substantial enough to allow for an effective, content-rich experience. In consultation with the industry, Private Property has spent a lot of time making sure that it understands the market needs, and has now built a platform that will effectively showcase commercial listings.

One can take the optimistic view and say that hopefully they will come back, and the experience they bring with them then will be even more valuable. However, that is merely hoping for the best, because why would they come back unless there were compelling reasons for them to do so?

more than 140 tenants and a new cinema complex alongside additional shops, new eateries, three new levels of parking, and the expansion of several big-brand stores – including the biggest Truworths store in Gauteng and the second-largest in South Africa.

Commercial listings now on Private Property he South African real estate market has waited a long time for an effective online platform to showcase its commercial sales and commercial rental listings.

It is also not something the country can afford to shrug its shoulders at. South Africa desperately needs the skills these students represent.

What buyers can expect to find:

• Commercial sales and commercial rental listings. • Ability to load rich content like property photos and videos. • National coverage. • Multiple listing types including industrial, retail, agricultural, office, hospitality and land.

This is a big issue that the country needs to face up to. In a competitive, globalised world, skills and labour are fluid. People can move freely, and they will move to the places where they believe their prospects are best.

The latest PPS Student Confidence Index found that 54% of respondents plan to move abroad for work in the next five years following their graduation

If South Africa wants to retain its skilled young people, it therefore has to create a more appealing environment for them. And that starts with forging an economy that welcomes entrepreneurs, encourages innovation, and supports small businesses. Young South Africans would not need to rush overseas to look for jobs if they could create their own wealth right here. And if they could do that they would not only be supporting their own futures, but the future of the country as well by creating jobs and driving economic growth. It is a reality where everyone wins, and it is the reality that South Africa could, and really should, be looking to create for its students.

BEST IN FOOD:

About the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

T

here’s a quiet, old-world feel to Newlands. The avenues of mature oaks and plane trees, green gardens and mountain streams running through, create the feeling of being in a village within the city. The buzz of chic cafes at the bottom of Kildare Road and Dean Street adds a cosmopolitan note to the suburb’s secluded charm.

I enjoy being so near the mountain and the forest. Hearing and seeing forest life in my garden, the different birds, frogs, the squirrels... the Newlands spring bubbling away just down the road – it’s all very idyllic! There’s a feeling of living in the city, and yet a sense of the quietude and vitality of nature. RICHARD, RESIDENT

Residents love having the mountain so close – being able to walk, run or mountain bike in Newlands Forest; being close the M3; and having Kirstenbosch arboretum and Cecilia Forest also within easy reach. The M3, while keeping passing traffic out of Newlands’s narrow streets, provides easy access to the rest of the city, so it’s a short commute to work in town. The suburb is close to the University of Cape Town and it’s easy to reach the N2 for the airport from the area.

Herschel, Rustenberg and more schools close by. Kildare Pre-Primary School is an appealing choice for the little ones. A friendly sense of community prevails, with young families meeting at the play park in Palmboom Road or the recently rehabilitated park on the banks of the Liesbeek River – and a strong residents’ association working on preserving the character of the area.

A big attraction for families is the proximity of excellent schools, with SACS, Westerford, Sans Souci, Rondebosch Boys’,

While Newlands boasts only a sprinkling of shops (residents head to nearby Cavendish Square for serious shopping), you are spoilt for choice when it comes to the good things in life – gelato and chocolates from Italian-run Le Delizie, ice cream from The Creamery, frozen yoghurt from Wakaberry, and luscious patisserie from Cassis, not to mention Melissa’s The Food Shop for all your deli needs. Montebello Design Centre has a wealth of handmade treasures and The Gardener’s Cottage Restaurant & Coffee Shop has great breakfasts. The Foresters Arms Restaurant & Bar is an institution for pub atmosphere and rugby nights.

Q: Who is buying property in the area and what types of properties are available? A: Newlands is ideally situated below the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, within easy reach of top schools, forest walks and jogging trails, boutique shops, the rugby and cricket grounds, eateries and cafes. Newlands Village, for example, is attractive to a range of people – from families to professionals, “swallows” and out-of-towners wanting a lock-up-and-go in a prime position. They can choose from small, beautifully restored Victorian cottages, to spacious modernised homes. Fernwood has larger erven and magnificent views and, accordingly, there is great demand for a range of properties.

Q: What can buyers expect to pay for property? A: The sought-after village atmosphere, access to top schools and an easy commute to the freeways and CBD, create a high demand from family buyers. Coupled with stock shortages, this is resulting in price growth not seen for a few years. Sectional title and townhouse properties are changing hands from R2m and up, and entry-level freeholds from R4m. Top-end luxury properties with high-quality finishes and mountain views can fetch upwards of R10m. The highest demand at present is for homes priced from R5m to R6m, for which buyers expect a three- or four-bedroom home with a garden and a double garage.

• Melissa’s The Food Shop: for breakfast • Cassis: for delicious macaroons and patisserie • Le Delizie: for Italian chocolate and ice cream • Mamma Roma: a family-run Italian trattoria • Myoga Restaurant at The Vineyard Hotel & Spa for fine dining

THINGS TO DO: • Montebello Design Centre: for cutting-edge design and crafts • Newlands Forest: for mountain biking and walking • Paradise Park or Palmboom Park: for kids’ play • Liesbeek River: for cycle tracks along the river • Newlands spring: for pure spring water • Rugby and cricket matches at the stadiums

TOP SCHOOLS: • • • • •

SACS Westerford High School Sans Souci Girls’ High School Kildare Pre-Primary School The Grove Primary School

Agent commentary Q: What do you love most about this area? A: As an agent and resident of New lands, I am passionate about the area. Trendy shopping, fabulous restaurants, magical Newlands Forest walks, Kirstenbosch, schools and university, cricket, and rugby are all on your doorstep. Fernwood, leafy with large erven, is ideal for growing families. Hiddingh Estate is the area for couples planning a family and wanting the feel of peace and tranquillity. With the wonderful Paradise Park playground and Liesbeek River walks, this area is perfect. Newlands Village with its Chelsea charm and state-of-theart renovations, is the area most sought-after by trendy couples looking for a unique lifestyle.
