Customers are spoilt for choice at a counter brimming with tempting hot sides and colourful salads, behind which there's a huge charcoal pit roasting spatchcock chickens and a wood-fired pizza oven for cuts of lamb, vegetables and pizzas. You can eat in or get a takeaway (packaging is either biodegradable or recyclable) piling plates high with roast vegetables, rich potato bake, cauliflower cheese, beautifully varied salads (including beetroot spiced with dukkah), lamb that falls apart and mouthwatering chicken marinated overnight so that it's tender and full of flavour.
Cocotte
At this tiny rotisserie shop next to Mojo Market in Regent Road, owners Delphine De Beer and Catherine Lauria recreate the quality and simplicity of their favourite Parisian rotisseries. Their recipe is simple: the best chickens are slowly cooked in a specially imported French rotisserie oven, with a secret blend of herbs and spices. Basted frequently, the chickens are mouth-wateringly succulent, ready to take home with a side salad or a little tub of luscious home-made mayonnaise or fresh herby yoghurt. You can also get a generous chicken baguette sandwich on the go. Ring in your order 90 minutes ahead of collection and a beautifully bronzed chicken will be ready, piping hot, in a purpose-designed and insulated bag to keep it warm and moist until you get home. For summer, Cocotte will add more eat-on-the-go options such as chicken wraps and chicken salads.

The wineries of Bot River are welcoming the arrival of spring with a tasting festival and Heritage Month menus
ot River is a region that keeps a low profile in the Cape Winelands, but this September the wineries just over Sir Lowry’s Pass will host the Over the Rainbow Spring Weekend (1 – 3 September) to draw wine lovers over the mountains.

“The wineries of Bot River are truly a welcoming community and the Spring Weekend is one of our favourite occasions to showcase our farms and the riches to be found on them,” says Melissa Nelsen, Genevieve MCC, who says the annual festival is “a celebration of the diversity of our village in all its magnificent colour and swag”.

The weekend kicks off with an exclusive “Best of Bot Wines” foodand-wine experience at Wildekrans Estate on Friday, 1 September. Gregory Henderson, executive chef, Forage restaurant, teams up with sommelier Higgo Jacobs to present a masterstroke in food and wine pairing.
Over the weekend, the Bot River wineries throw open their doors to welcome visitors with a range of activities and offers. Newcomer estate, Arcangeli Wines, celebrates the classic Italian cultivar with its BARolo wine bar, while Wildekrans is pretty in pink as it dishes out glasses of delicious Méthode Cape Classique Brut Rosé at the gate. From here, you can meander at will; there will be a food truck at Luddite, canapé tastings at Rivendell Estate, fynbos talks at Paardenkloof and sundowners at Maremmana Polo Estate. Gabriëlskloof will continue its celebrations for the whole of September, though, with a month-long menu of South African cuisine that culminates in a Heritage Day feast. During September, visitors to the Gabriëlskloof Tasting Lounge can tuck into the Mzansi Tapas Taster paired with four estate wines. The platter includes snoek ‘n patat croquettes with amasi foam and chakalaka, bobotie poppers, pickled fish tacos, and biltong in red wine. The platter will also be available at the estate’s restaurant during Heritage Month, culminating in a long-table feast in the courtyard on 24 September. “Gabriëlskloof is proudly South African, which is why we’re excited to share our passion and pleasures with fellow South Africans around the fire as we celebrate our cultural heritage and diversity. We’ve laid on some brilliant food and wine for the occasion and have made it absolutely family-friendly,” says Frans Groenewald, executive chef. and the smoke-firing. I was doing painting and glazes before and the materials for that are expensive and sometimes hard to get. With smoke-firing you don’t need much in the way of materials; it’s just the burnishing using a stone and then vegetable oil and newspaper. Even if you don’t have an electric kiln you can always use a peat fire outside. The Cape Craft and Design Institute played a big role in terms of showcasing my work, both nationally and internationally, and now my work is exhibited in galleries like Southern Guild and Art in the Forest in Cape Town, and others in Joburg and Durban.

eramic artist Madoda Fani’s beautiful smoke-fired vessels, intricately decorated by hand, are in demand from collectors all over the world. He tells us about moving back to Cape Town, to a studio in Woodstock shared with his brother, Siyabonga Fani, after three years working in Johannesburg. Q: How did your business start? A: I started to work as a ceramic painter at the Potter’s Workshop in Muizenberg and worked there for about eight years. I then worked for Art in the Forest until 2013, when I decided to go to Johannesburg to start on my own business. I chose Johannesburg because the smokefired vessels are mostly made in KwaZulu-Natal. I wanted to meet up with other artists from KZN and learn how to do the burnishing
Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I worked for three years in Joburg until the centre I was working from was going to be demolished for renovation, so I decided to come back to Cape Town. Q: How did you find your premises? A: My brother, ceramicist Siyabonga Fani, was already established here at The Palms Decor and Lifestyle Centre in Woodstock, so I joined him in his studio and started to help him with his business. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: We make and sell from here. Siyabonga Ceramics is the shop at the front and the studio is at the back. We have easy access to a lot of things and inspiration as well. If you get stuck you can go and look at

Q: What is your shop footprint? A: It’s quiet during the week, and we get 10 to 15 people a day, but there’s a market on the weekends, so a lot of people come in and out. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I usually do big once-off pieces. However, I’ve decided to add a smaller, more affordable range. I hope to get orders large enough so that we can employ more people who need jobs and grow the business. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We’re active on Facebook. Sagewood Security Estate Prestigious residential development launched in Sandown

n 2015, developers Milnerton Estates announced the launch of a new suburb – Sandown. Over the past two years, the developers and their professional team have worked tirelessly on the development, the design and on getting ultimate approval from the local authority for the first single residential estate to be launched here – Sagewood. Each plot has design criteria based on its “small, medium or large” footprint.
