reat wines have a story to tell: of the vintage past, the soils they grow in and the cellar hands that shape them. And when an estate dates back more than 200 years, there’s no shortage of tales to tell. Those tales are the inspiration behind the “Short Story Collection” from Stellenbosch estate Neethlingshof, a portfolio of premium wines celebrating the rich history of the estate and the modern-day sustainability success of the vineyards. “The Short Story Collection was born with The Owl Post Pinotage,” says winemaker De Wet Viljoen, who has
been at the estate for 15 years. “We wanted to bring the biodiversity and history of the estate into the wines.” While the owl houses attract avian predators, the introduction of fynbos islands between the vineyards has also seen the return of caracal to the farm. This elegant cat is honoured with a Bordeaux-style red blend, a suitably sleek and full-bodied red well suited to winter evenings. Then there’s the Jackal’s Dance, a single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc which brims with gooseberries and tropical notes underpinned by crisp minerality. It’s a nod to

Perfect pâtisserie Enjoy elegant sweet indulgences at two new Cape Town cafes WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED
T
he French pâtisserie and the Viennese coffee house make a leisurely art of the coffee break. The pastry chef’s skill is given full expression with delicate and complex confections, so that it’s almost a shame to dig into them. Cape Town now has two new coffee shops inspired by that dedication to sweet indulgence, places not just to grab a coffee on the go but to linger over an edible artwork and while away an afternoon.
Kahvé Road
Tucked neatly inside Cavendish Square, Kahvé Road is all about the coffee journey and the ethically sourced coffee, but it’s the patisserie counter that lures you in: lavish jewels of confectionery that make it impossible to choose. Halaal-certified and proudly South African, the coffee shop also serves breakfast and lunch. We zeroed in on the gorgeous chocolate creations together with deep, smooth Petra coffee. First, we had a beautiful chocolaterobed espresso dome filled with a light espresso sponge and rich mousse on a shortbread and cocoa nib base, then the decadent dark chocolate cheesecake on a brownie base. We ended with chocolate chip waffles with tonka bean ice cream and moreish shards of chilli and peach white chocolate. Made in the central kitchen in Woodstock, the patisserie is beautifully crafted from real ingredients and is worth braving the mall for, even if you’re not shopping.
Coco Safar
Coco Safar brings a patina of urban luxury and artisan activity to the newly revamped and glitzy Artem centre on Sea Point Main Road. Grouped around the cafe, its coffee roastery, chocolaterie, microbrewery and gelateria produce all the specialist elements of the offering. After tasting the ice creams and voting the dulce balsamic gelato our favourite, we went the savoury patisserie route, enjoying a Brioche Florentine (baked egg and spinach inside a light brioche bread), leek and potato galette, and a lovely tomato, feta and basil turnover in millefeuille pastry. Finally, we gave in to the temptation of the sweet counter and shared a well-named Chocolate Decadent, a rich confection of cake, chocolate mousse and orange blossom ganache served with Earl Grey sorbet, along with a naturally decaffeinated Colombia La Serriana from the à la carte coffee selection.
A blend of luxury Discover the Kalkveld Lounge at Zandvliet and create your own unique wine blend WORDS: BELINDA MOUNTAIN

andvliet Wine Estate lies near the small town of Ashton in the Robertson Valley and was one of the first farms in the country to bottle Shiraz. The estate’s flagship Kalkveld Shiraz inspired the opening of the Kalkveld Lounge, an atmospheric tasting room which, with its roaring fireplace, two long wooden tables and an 8m custom-built chandelier made from recycled wine bottles, brings to mind dining scenes from Game of Thrones. Along with the wine blending experience, the estate will be developing four-star accommodation, a restaurant and conference facilities – hoping to significantly boost the area’s tourist attractions. On arrival at the estate, we were greeted with a delicious pink G&T, rather surprising until you learn that Zandvliet produces ClemenGold Gin, inspired by the ClemenGold mandarin planted on the farm. Hope on Hopkins Distillery in Cape Town creates the gin, blending nine botanicals with cinnamon, honey, ground almonds and other special ingredients. Besides tasting the Zandvliet wine range in the lounge, visitors can also pair them with ClemenGold products like biscotti, panforte, marmalade and chocolates – offering interesting
flavour sensations. If you’re feeling peckish, the lounge also serves hearty farm platters including delicious cheeses, charcuterie, olives, fruit, breads and dips. Another unique experience offered by the Kalkveld Lounge is the wine blending itself. It’s not every day that you’re able to express your own personal taste preferences in a bottle of wine! You’re invited to smell and taste the three samples of wine (in our case Mourvedre, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon) and then decide on the percentages to be included in your bottle. You then mix up the perfect combination in a beaker, pouring from the appropriate barrels, and pour the mixture into your bottle. You use a corking machine to insert a cork, and you even get to apply wax to the neck of the bottle, which is more challenging than you’d imagine! Think up a name for your blend, write it on a label, stick it on your bottle and voila, you’ve blended your own wine to take home − a hugely satisfying experience. If you’re interested in wine, love a bit of history or simply like to experience delicious flavour combinations, then Zandvliet Estate should be on your list of things to do around Cape Town.

My business neighbourhood The Kids Gym is a kids-only gym in Milnerton where exercise is a fun way to build confidence WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
IMAGE: SUPPLIED
T
he Kids Gym in Sable Square is designed so that every child can embrace physical literacy, whether they want to hone their skills in a chosen sport, or just experience movement in a noncompetitive, nurturing and motivating environment. Co-owners Janet Mitchell and Glenn Joselowitz tell us more about their business. Q: How did your business start? A: Janet: I was a gymnastics coach in the UK and represented Great Britain in international events at a time when gymnastics was prevalent in the Eastern Bloc – a month spent in Russia was certainly not fun! I was headhunted to come to South Africa to assist in setting up a programme for coaches and gymnasts, and the sunshine was a definite attraction. Thirty years later, I’m still here. Glenn was one of the coaches that I trained and worked with, and he had one of the biggest clubs in the country. Recently, we started talking about the challenges of children growing up today and the decline in their activity, which negatively impacts on their health and well-being, addiction to technology being a central player!
lenn: My daughter, Emily, is G also behind the inspiration for The Kids Gym. Born with a rare neuromuscular condition, her hands, fingers, wrist, shoulders and right foot had limited or no mobility. By the time she was four, she had had operations, casts, splinting and countless specialists and physiotherapists. I often took Emily to the gym with me, setting up little obstacle courses, slowly challenging her abilities, and she thrived. Her confidence in her body grew and it wasn’t long before we had to hold our breath in the playground.
We spent two years planning and developing this brand, to start the process of getting kids active. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We identified a number of requirements, primarily affordable space with height and ample free parking, and in a retail space. The space at Sable Square met all these and is easily accessible from the surrounding areas. Q: How did you find your premises? A: A location scout looked for us based on our specs. As it happened, the centre was specifically looking for an offering for children, so it was a win-win situation. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The type of space we require can be expensive and often there’s either no parking or paid parking. So to find the right space at the right price with free parking was key.
Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We’re located near Spur, Pick n Pay, Clicks, Tekkie Town plus lots of novelty stores. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Considering we’re close to Canal Walk, where the rentals are very high, they are reasonable. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: We currently have 300 members who come in regularly according to their own timetables, another 200 to 300 kids per week, as well as birthday parties. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Definitely, we’re already in negotiation for a branch in Joburg. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: A ll bookings and sign-ups can be done online. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: K ids enjoy moving between the different programmes: from the Ninja Zone and Ball Zone to the Balance and Climb, or the Rhythm Zone, there’s something for every age and ability.

Childproofing your home We chat with an expert about how to get started and what to keep in mind IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK
C
hildren are curious, and you want them to be. Whether you’re expecting your first or you have a grandchild on the way, childproofing the house for the next couple of years can give you peace of mind. Michelle Jacobs of Baby Proof says, “The goal of childproofing is not to turn your home into a prison-like setting that completely inhibits a child’s ability to explore and develop. Rather, childproofing should balance such factors as safety, aesthetics, cost, child supervision level and livability.” Childproofing is not just about installing preventative hardware; it’s also about thinking differently.
Getting started
Michelle says, “Getting down on all fours helps us see the world in a new way and opens up our eyes to potential dangers we may not have thought about.” Electrical plug points are child magnets, and although it’s straightforward to fit safety plugs or outlet covers to unused wall sockets, it’s more difficult to know what to do with active plugs. “Hide electrical cords behind furniture, alternatively use trunking, Velcro tape and electric cord organisers to tidy up these cords.”
Staircases or stairs
Safety gates at the top and bottom of staircases are the simplest and most effective solution. “If railings have vertical openings wider than 8cm, safeguard them with plastic garden fencing or Perspex. Horizontal railings, no matter the gap, must always be safeguarded,” says Michelle.
The kitchen
This is a challenging area, and although it’s easiest to install a safety gate, it’s often not practical to do so. There are numerous child safety mechanisms which effectively “lock” cupboards and drawers for little fingers, but still allow adults easy access. All cleaning materials, poisons and detergents must be relocated to a cupboard that children won’t be able to reach. A good idea is making a habit of using the back plates on your stove hob, turning pot handles towards the back and installing an oven lock. Michelle also suggests securing the refrigerator with an appliance or refrigerator latch.
Bathrooms
Barring access to the bathroom isn’t
WE BET
always feasible, so it’s important to secure this room, from the hot tap to the medicine chest. Toiletries such as shampoo may seem harmless, but can be dangerous if ingested by a child. All medicines should be locked away, ideally in a high, wall-mounted cupboard.
General areas
“Open, unguarded windows can be hazardous,” says Michelle. “They should be able to be locked, but if not, fit them with a Jackloc Window Restrictor. Use window guards, window stops and safety netting on windows, decks and landings, and safeguard balconies with Perspex.” Heavy furniture and bookcases can pose a threat if they can be pulled over, so if in doubt, secure them to the wall with brackets. For heating, Michelle suggests an Econo-Heat electric wall panel heater, which is safe for children. Sharp edges on tables and other surfaces, as well as doors which can trap fingers, can be softened with a range of specific soft foam products. Lastly, be sure to block off your driveway and garage with a door and safety gate.

A
t its heart, Somerset West is still the small Winelands town of years gone by, close to nature on the slopes of the Helderberg mountains, with vineyards abutting its streets and a river running through it. The attractions of this leisurely lifestyle have enticed so many newcomers that the small town long since outgrew its original boundaries, with new developments and gated estates more than doubling its size. It now stretches alongside the N2 in both directions and joins up with the neighbouring town of Strand. But for long-term residents, the close-knit community endures. “I love Somerset West for the mountain and the people,” says Dawn Wyatt of The Toy Store. “There’s a very nice community and you’re close to the sea and Cape Town. It’s almost like living in a beautiful bubble, and everything works.”
Property Winding up above the Main Street, the original residential streets of Somerset West are leafy, lined with family homes with gardens and gorgeous views up to the mountain
peaks or out over False Bay. Narrow lanes lead up a secret valley to Spanish Farm, and the beautiful Helderberg Nature Reserve descends to meet the streets of Nature’s Valley, providing families with a beautiful setting to picnic, enjoy summer concerts and hike year-round. Tucked between the reserve and the wine farms, Erinvale Country and Golf Estate combines world-class golf with a secure lifestyle, and all these roads lead to the town’s old centre, which remains a trendy shopping hub for locals despite the rise of out-of-town malls. “We’re trying to keep the old Somerset West alive. There are lots of independent small businesses around Main Road,” says Dawn.
DO: • Helderberg Nature Reserve: for hikes, picnics and summer concerts • Radloff Park: for dog-walking, sports and playing on the river bank • Strand Beach: for surfing and outings with the family • Lourensford Market on Friday nights and Sundays in season: for a variety of artisanal goods and live entertainment • The Playhouse Theatre: for fun amateur productions • Golf at Erinvale or Somerset West Golf Clubs
EAT: • The Restaurant at Waterkloof: for modern French cuisine • Camphors at Vergelegen (currently on a winter break): for fine dining • Stables at Vergelegen Wine Estate: for child-friendly lunches • The Millhouse Kitchen at Lourensford Wine Estate: for bistro food and pizza • Giovanni’s in Waterstone Village: for Italian cuisine • Giuseppe’s: for wood-fired pizza
SHOP: • Chelsea Village: for boutiques and vintage decor at Gister • The Toy Store: for pre-loved toys • Schoon on Bright Street: for the best artisanal bread • Somerset Mall: for all the major chain stores • Waterstone Mall: for the flagship Woolworths Food store
New estates are being developed on the outskirts of town – Paardevlei Square, Sitari Country Estate and Somerset Lakes, for example – meeting the overwhelming demand for secure country living within reach of the city and Cape Town International Airport. The huge Somerset Mall provides convenient retail therapy and movies for residents from the Helderberg region, and various business and industrial parks along the N2 make the town self-sufficient. If you need more, Cape Town is only 50km away.
Why should investors consider buying in Somerset West?
Agent Insight A local property expert gives us the inside scoop on Somerset West.
With the increasing house prices on the Atlantic Seaboard and Stellenbosch, Somerset West is primed to offer great value for investors, with rental returns commensurate with those seen closer to Cape Town. It also offers a desirable location, 15 minutes from the airport and a short drive away from world-class wine farms and stellar beaches. It's also close to top schools, Stellenbosch University and picturesque mountain ranges.

Schooling The schools are another of Somerset West’s drawcards for families. “We have excellent public schools like De Hoop Laerskool/Primary School, Beaumont Primary School and Parel Vallei High School, and private schools such as Somerset College, Somerset West Private School, Reddam House Somerset and Curro Sitari. Children have endless opportunities when it comes to sports too: dancing, surfing, football and karate,” says Nelia de Wet of Gister, who moved to the area from Cape Town 25 years ago. Dawn says, “Everyone flocks here for the schools. It’s become harder to get places in the public schools.
The hardest part about weekends is choosing where to explore next. “The Helderberg Nature Reserve is very popular for hiking, and many of the farms are open for mountain biking routes,” says Nelia. “We’re surrounded by the best wine farms in the world. Tastings, food markets and music festivals are our favourites.” Practically within the town, the historic wine farms of Lourensford Wine Estate, Vergelegen Wine Estate and Morgenster Estate are perhaps the best known, but to discover more of the wine and food of the area the annual Taste of Helderberg (Friday, 8 June) showcases more than 25 wine estates, along with gourmet tastings from local restaurants. Strand is close by for surfing and family beach play, and golfers can choose between three golf clubs, all sharing the scenic mountain backdrop and dramatic sunset views that make Somerset West such a popular place to call home.

A
report released by research group New World Wealth (NWW) at the end of 2017, listed Parkhurst in Joburg as the third-fastest-growing area for wealth in South Africa. NWW determines the exclusivity of a suburb/area by pricing property per square metre and by the number of R20m homes in the area. Parkhurst’s R12,000/m2 property pricing earned it a spot as one of the fastest-growing wealth areas. Shelley-Ann Solms of Jawitz Properties says this ranking isn’t unexpected but that the window to purchase an affordable property in the area is slowly closing. “It’s great that Parkhurst has achieved this ranking as it boosts the suburb’s standing and popularity and various aspects, from upgraded public spaces to family-friendly lifestyle factors, are driving demand. And with an
improved economic outlook on the horizon, I would advise people who have considered Parkhurst as an area in which to live to get in now, before prices start increasing,” says Solms. Over the last few years, Parkhurst’s properties have become more affordable. The centrally located area is attracting professional families who are buying renovated freehold homes in an area that is surrounded by good schools and has upgraded, safe and usable public spaces. Parkhurst’s central location benefits commuters but also makes it a popular Airbnb rental area as it has easy access from the Gautrain stations and most homes are within walking distance of the trendy 4th Avenue with its numerous boutiques, restaurants, cafe culture and oneof-a-kind retail establishments.

Creating the first Auto City in Africa T
he development of Rosslyn Hub, a R3bn mixed-use development, is a crucial step towards the creation of the Tshwane Auto City: a R50bn project that will be funded by private sector investment and could be an example of how to develop Africa’s future Smart Cities in a sustainable way. According to Brendan Falkson, director, Rosslyn Hub, Rosslyn will emulate well-established
automotive cities like those in Spain, China, Germany and Japan. This will create a second “CBD” on the doorstep of Ga-Rankuwa and Soshanguve, anchored by a labour intensive automotive manufacturing core that will enable workers to walk to work and redress the poor land decisions of the past. Rosslyn Hub will include 1,200 houses and 250 rental apartments;
a crèche, a primary and high school; a university with student housing; two shopping centres, a value centre and filling station; a logistics park and vehicle distribution centre; a truck staging area and truck stop; motor showrooms and a motor retail area; a hospital and clinic; a hotel and conference centre; and an outdoor automotive pavilion. All this within a secure, pedestrian-friendly environment.
Cape Town’s luxury market
A
ccording to Knight Frank’s PIRI 100 index, Cape Town’s luxury residential property market saw growth of 19,9% in 2017, the second-best performance worldwide. The PIRI 100 index, or prime international residential index, formed part of Knight Frank’s 2018 Wealth Report, which tracks data on wealthy and ultra-wealthy individuals from around the world. “Cape Town is fast becoming a truly global holiday destination and an increasingly desirable residential address for South Africa’s high net worth individuals, as well as
those from abroad,” said Deon de Klerk, head of wealth: Africa regions, Standard Bank. “The luxury residential property market in the city has really been able to capitalise on its newfound reputation as the ‘Monaco of the South’.” Knight Frank attributes the strong performance of Cape Town’s luxury residential property market to a combination of demand- and supplyrelated factors. On the demand side, the areas near Table Mountain, including the Atlantic Seaboard and City Bowl, continue to attract strong inward migration from other parts of South Africa as well as sustained foreign buying. On the supply side,
prices were further underpinned by the lack of existing stock or new development opportunities in Cape Town’s prime locations. “Anecdotally, we know that there is a lot of ‘semi-grating’ occurring, with many South Africans opting to relocate to the Western Cape before they consider emigrating to other countries,” said De Klerk. The Knight Frank report also highlighted Cape Town’s Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, which opened in Cape Town in September 2017, adding to the city’s already burgeoning appeal to high net worth individuals.
