f you enjoy your wine, the French cultivar of Cinsaut may ring a bell. In 1925, Stellenbosch viticulturist Professor Abraham Izak Perold crossbred Cinsaut, also known as Hermitage, with Pinot Noir to produce the much-loved Pinotage. While Pinotage went on to fame as our proudly South African red wine, Cinsaut – typically spelled Cinsault in France – fell out of favour despite being widely planted across the local winelands and used as a crucial component in blended red wines. Enjoy your Chateau Libertas, Tassenberg or Alto Rouge? In the past they have all benefitted from a good splash of Cinsaut.

Cabernet Sauvignon drinkers, through to lower-alcohol, light and fruity bottlings. Dubbed the Pinot Noir of the Swartland, it can be served slightly chilled, making it a perfect red wine for the warm days of summer.

Waterkloof “Seriously Cool” Cinsaut 2015

Produced from low-yield 40-yearold bush vines on the cool slopes of the Helderberg, this Cinsaut balances soft tannins and lively acidity with “a combination of blackcurrant, raspberries and spices, infused with mild earthy notes” on the nose, says winemaker Nadia Barnard. Serious in structure, it’s best enjoyed cool, at about 14°C.

“The renaissance of Cinsaut is upon us,” says Corlea Fourie, winemaker at this family-owned estate on the outskirts of Wellington. One of only

two Cinsauts to score five stars in the 2017 Platter’s Guide, Twyfeling is an ideal choice to be enjoyed with food. Made from bush vines on an historic Bovlei valley site dubbed Hermitagekop, the wine is a big-hitting example of the style, with berry flavours balanced by concentrated savoury notes, tobacco and spice. It is barrelaged in French oak to ensure plenty of structure and ageing potential.

Although made in Neil Ellis’s Stellenbosch cellar, grapes were sourced from a 40-year-old bush vine vineyard in the unique Groenekloof ward outside Darling. Here the warmer climate is tempered by the cool ocean, and this top-tier Cinsaut shows off plenty of fruit, spice and perfume. Underpinned by subtle use of older oak barrels, it’s an excellent food wine that will get better over a few years in the cellar.

vondale has more than a touch of the rural idyll about it: there are vines with flowering cover crops between the rows, a mobile chicken coop with roosters squabbling next to sleepy Angus cattle, a deep mixed border of roses, flowers and herbs before a classic Cape farmhouse. Owner Johnathan Grieve says, “The natural way of farming is integral to what we do. All our vineyards, vegetables, chickens, ducks and cows are certified organic. We use biodynamics – so all those energies come into it combined with a scientific approach – with

Ice cream Sundays a view to creating something that’s very vibrant, full of energy, and to produce unique handcrafted, slow wines.” Opening a restaurant on the farm to complete the field-to-fork cycle has been part of the family’s plan for over 10 years. However, it was only on meeting chef Eric Bulpitt, who was looking to move from his previous restaurant at Newton Johnson, that the time felt right. “There are a lot of synergies between what Eric does and what we’re about,” says Johnathan. Together they’ve extended the vegetable and herb garden and plan to build up to producing the majority of ingredients for the restaurant on the farm. “Faber means craftsman in Latin. To us it’s more our connection with the land, our connection to our suppliers and to the people that we feed. Our food is very simple, very few ingredients on the plate, still very technical, but not over-complicated.” The short menu is flexible according to the day’s harvest and frequently includes foraged flowers and herbs. Delicate kombu-cured yellowtail, with watermelon infused with lemon verbena, and crispy onion rings, was garnished with a pretty flower that on tasting turned out to be watercress. The tenderest Karoo lamb shoulder came with a nutty pumpkin seed pesto and wilted kale with mint leaves – uncomplicated and thoroughly satisfying. And dessert wowed with a tapestry of textures and flavours, smooth cream cheese sorbet, crunchy shards of honeycomb, blueberries macerated in Avondale muscat dessert wine and a gorgeous macaron. It’s an elegant escape to the country, with flavours tasting even more vibrant due to the beautiful setting and harmonious energy of this family-run organic farm.

There’s just something about the sea and ice cream – they go so well together. That’s why your next stop has to be The Creamery in Mouille Point. Indulge in delicious milkshakes, hot artisanal cookies with ice cream, or go for the more traditional scoop on a cone. All ingredients are sourced from local farms that grow and produce them in a way that is kind to the environment and to animals. What more could you ask for?

Curtain call

Dinner and a show is one of the best ways to round off an evening. Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bay is known for amazing productions of local and international shows, and features anything from dramas and comedies, to musicals and cabarets. Arrive early and enjoy a light snack at the Act 1 Theatre Cafe before taking in the current show, My Fat Friend – an unmissable comedy starring beloved funnyman, Tobie Cronje.

T

he Atlantic Seaboard represents quintessential Cape Town for many visitors who choose a holiday rental here. A: Basic studios start at around R800 per night with worldclass villas going for up to R150,000 per night for the pinnacle of style and luxury.
