A day of discovery
I
love chocolate. I mean really love it. The 70% dark, salted kind that melts in my mouth. The taste is silky and luxurious, and not much can compare to that moment of bliss when I close my eyes and savour the heavenly taste. As a chocoholic I’m always on the hunt for new chocolatey experiences. I’d heard about the Spice Route Destination and decided it was time to visit. The Spice Route is a multiexperience concept estate set in the beautiful Paarl area. It sprouted up a couple of years ago and is the ideal family day trip with something for everyone. To start with: chocoloate! DV Artisan Chocolate bean-to-bar factory is a family-run, micro-batch chocolate producer. Sourcing cacao beans from around the world, the factory then handcrafts them into fine speciality chocolates. I suggest a chocolate tasting to get an idea of what you prefer. If you have time you can sit and take part in a more indepth educational experience. Or simply watch at the factory window to see how the chocolate is created. The salted caramel milk chocolate is divine, as well as the individual truffles (try the mint one for some dark decadence). What’s great is that the chocolate contains no artificial flavourants or colourants.
The journey continues. Maybe coffee and cake at DV Cottage Cafe? Sitting outside we enjoyed the view of the enormous oak trees with playful squirrels jumping across them. There’s a large play area there which kept my little one entertained. The beauty of the Spice Route is that there’s no rush and you can simply head in a different direction if you choose. I enjoyed walking around the grounds meandering through the area from one thing to the next. I suggest you pop in at the glass-blowing studio for something different. Or if beer piques your interest, the Spice Route is home to the CBC brewery. For wine enthusiasts the Spice Route Tasting Room offers handcrafted wines made from Swartland grapes. The artisanal wines also boast unique pairings like charcuterie or chocolate. With such a picturesque setting it’s hard not to linger. But even so, a day at the Spice Route isn’t enough to take in the whole sensory journey of high-quality products. We’ll have to go back!
With five restaurants to choose from, there’s something for everyone, whether you fancy a beer and a burger at Barley & Biltong, or pizza and tapas at La Grapperia, or some smart local cuisine at Bertus Basson.

tsiki Biyela didn’t follow a typical path to the wine cellars of Stellenbosch. There was no family farm to inherit, or long-held passion for Pinotage. Not even a lightbulb moment when an aged Chenin Blanc sent her rushing to her oenology textbooks. Rather, for this tenacious winemaker from rural KwaZulu-Natal, it was a scholarship from South African Airways that saw her pack her bags and head for Stellenbosch University in 1999. “Back then I didn’t even know that wine existed. I simply wanted to study, and the winemaking scholarship was a way to university,” says Biyela. “Not everybody’s born with a passion for something. It can also develop over time. But as I learnt more about wine along the way I got more and more excited about the industry.” After graduating with her BSc Oenology degree, she didn’t stray far from the streets of the Eikestad, taking on the

role of winemaker at Stellekaya winery in the Bosman’s Crossing precinct. Particularly famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends, Stellekaya’s grapes are drawn from selected vineyards in the so-called Golden Triangle on the slopes of the Helderberg. “The first thing we do is look for terroir, and because we want consistency we work with the same farmers year after year, including fruit from our own vineyards,” says Biyela, who likes to let the grapes do the talking. “For me the wine should represent where the grapes came from. It’s a natural product, and by fiddling with it too much in the cellar, it’s not being allowed to express its character and soul.” After 13 years as resident winemaker at Stellekaya, Biyela has also launched her own wine label, Aslina. “It’s named after my grandmother who was always a pillar of strength
in my life,” says Biyela, adding that her Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux-style red blend, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay have already picked up orders from Germany, Denmark and the US. Along with building her own reputation as a winemaker, Biyela is passionate about inspiring a new generation of students. She sits on the board of the Pinotage Youth Development Academy, which “trains people of colour to help them get involved in the wine industry, training them throughout the value chain of the wine industry – from vineyard to cellar, to tasting room to marketing. We also do placements in wineries when they’re finished.”

he mild spices and feel-good warmth of Cape Malay cooking are so much part of our collective South African food culture that I jumped at the opportunity to learn to cook a few dishes myself.
Who doesn’t love samosas, Cape Malay curries and rotis? Learn to cook them yourself in Zainie Misbach’s Bo-Kaap home WORDS & IMAGES: KIT HEATHCOCK
And who better to learn from than Zainie Misbach, who started and co-owned Cape Malay restaurants Biesmiellah and Noon Gun for many years, among many more impressive food credentials. Her Bo-Kaap Cooking Tour is popular with international visitors for its insight into local culture and food. Cooking alongside Zainie in her home is a practical, hands-on introduction to Cape Malay cooking, full of useful tips about spices, ingredients and techniques. After meeting in Wale Street, Zainie took us to the corner shop and then to Atlas Trading Company to show us which spices, samosa leaves and sauces she uses. On the short walk through the colourful Bo-Kaap streets she told us about the history of the area and the Cape Malay people, before arriving at her home: a traditional cottage backing onto a shady communal garden. We donned aprons and gathered around the kitchen table as her daughter-inlaw, Zoelfah, started mixing the roti dough and Zainie introduced us to the spices we’d be using. Cumin, coriander and fennel are joined by turmeric and the secret “father-in-law” red masala from Atlas Trading Company, which the locals use as their mild hint of chilli (the “mother-in-law” is the hot version). These spices are used generously as a base for all Malay curries. Once we had our chicken curry going, we all worked with flour and rolling pins to get the roti dough as thin as possible before twisting and rolling it. The secret to flaky, buttery roti was now ours and easy enough to cook at home. Time flew by as we made chilli bites (dhaltjies), folded our own samosas and deep-fried them. Within no time, it seemed, we’d cooked and tossed the rotis, the curry was ready and lunch was on the table in the dining room. It was a chance to relax, chat and swap stories from around the world over a traditional Cape Malay meal that we’d cooked together from scratch that we now felt inspired to cook for our families at home.

hen you think of a quick and easy solution to food in the evenings, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? More often than not, it’s a quick burger at the drive-through on the way home, or a few slices of toast and whatever is in the fridge. When you’re at work for 10 hours a day, it’s not easy to get motivated to cook a healthy dinner for the family. When I heard about The Flying Pan, I was not only intrigued, but very interested in the concept of getting a healthy, cooked dinner every night, delivered straight to my office. My fiance and I jumped at the chance to try the “rethink dinner” concept.
About The Flying Pan
Founded by husband and wife team Matthew and Bridget Hoepner, The Flying Pan is the ultimate solution to making sure your dinners are healthy, nutritious and convenient. Part of the service – other than amazing, freshly cooked food – is the prompt delivery and easy-to-use online ordering system. With different menus for different dietary requirements (lowcarb, vegetarian or classic menus), the variety is wide and the options for quantities are not limited.
Our experience
I decided to leave my diet behind for
this experience and we opted for a week of food from the classic menu. This included bangers and mash, Cape Malay chicken curry, tomato and chorizo pasta, chilli con carne and the chicken basil stir fry. My expectations? Dinners cooked in bulk that all taste the same. However, every meal was meticulously presented in a gorgeously branded, reusable plastic container. Despite the distance travelled to deliver to me, the food looked as it did on the website. Each dish had its own unique flavour and, apart from being enjoyable, was filling, wholesome and made me remember how much I miss my mom’s cooking. My fiance’s favourite dish was the chicken and basil stir-fry, while I stayed true to my love for all things chilli with the chilli con carne. All in all, The Flying Pan exceeded my expectations, and I’m looking forward to ordering from the low-carb menu next week!

Paradise found Like a phoenix from the ashes, Tintswalo Atlantic recovered from being burned to the ground WORDS: BRIDGET MCNULTY
IMAGES: SUPPLIED
I
t seems almost impossible that a five-star hotel could have rebuilt itself in just seven months, yet that’s exactly what Tintswalo Atlantic, the luxury lodge hidden away on Chapman’s Peak Drive, had to do. When the wildfires of March 2015 swept through Table Mountain National Park, the hotel was badly affected, with almost the entire property burnt to ashes. But in just seven months it rebuilt itself – some might say even better than before. But even before this mythical tale, Tintswalo Atlantic was a special place. How could it not be, when it’s the only hotel on Chapman’s Peak Drive, with arguably the best ocean
views in Cape Town? It may be a mere 10-minute drive from Hout Bay, but the moment you’re whisked downhill to the hotel itself, you feel as if you’re a million miles from anywhere close to real life. It truly is paradise found. And this isn’t just waxing lyrical because of the fabulously comfortable rooms with sweeping ocean views and all the little comforts one could hope for from a luxe hotel. It’s the small details that set Tintswalo Atlantic apart – the genuinely friendly staff, the impeccably designed interiors, the complimentary amuse-bouche as you sip on sundowners and watch the sun sink into the ocean. Truly, this is a world unto its own. Even the food lives up to the hype, with deliciously contemporary dishes prepared with fresh ingredients and an interesting take on classic combinations. Locals come to the
hotel to celebrate special occassions – dinner and breakfast – so there’s a good buzz to the dining room, and the service is so smooth it’s almost unnoticeable. High praise indeed. Strolling on the beach directly in front of the hotel, relaxing on your private veranda or gazing out at the ocean from a bubble bath in a clawfoot tub, are pretty much all that is expected of you when you stay at Tintswalo Atlantic. But the experience is so extraordinary that you’ll be pinching yourself to see if you wake up pretty much the whole time.

My business neighbourhood Cakes to feast your eyes on at The Velvet Cake Company’s new store in Loop Street WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED
PROPERTY NEWS
Q: H ow did your business start? A: A fter qualifying as a pastry chef, I had the opportunity to open a small coffee shop in Hertex Fabrics showroom, doing all our own baking. The coffee shop, Treat Patisserie, eventually grew into a 50-seater and soon I needed a bigger kitchen, so I rented the space opposite for baking the cakes and that became The Velvet Cake Company. After running both businesses for a while, I left Treat to focus on the special cakebaking niche and decided to open a second Velvet Cake Company shop in central Cape Town. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: I started looking in Kloof Street and Bree Street, and ended up here. This was the perfect size and had a nice New York feel to it. It felt more vibrant, very urban Cape Town. Q: H ow did you find your premises? A: I contacted Swindon Property Group and an agent showed me around. I looked at about four places and it took less than a month to find this spot.
T
he Velvet Cake Company bakes luscious special occasion cakes to order and sells cupcakes and cakes by the slice to enjoy with coffee or as a takeaway. Following the success of her first shop in Bellville, owner Jandri van Zyl tells us about opening her second store in Cape Town’s Loop Street.
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T hey are just the right size and also have a collection point for customers to fetch larger orders. It’s a cute heritage building from the outside, with a pinkish colour, which fit the look I wanted. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Giulio’s Italian cafe, a nice hairdresser (which is
7
awesome as they come here to get cake and chat), then a new Jason’s Bakery across the road, and The Village Idiot. Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: T he rent is better than in Bree and Kloof streets, for now at least. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: T here’s a lot of foot traffic passing and we easily see 2,000 people a month. Q: D o you have any expansion plans? A: We’ve got the two stores now, and we’re looking into expanding online and adding in a delivery service. Once the new store is fully established, we’ll be looking for another store in one of the winelands towns, as we’ve got a lot of customers there too. Q: D o you operate online as well? A: We have a very nice online store that you can order and purchase through, but I’d like to create something even better. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: O ur rainbow cake is one of our most popular cakes. The milktart cupcakes are also really unique – a traditional milk tart and cinnamon cupcake in one.

Multigenerational Analyse it living is on the Go local rise worldwide PATRICK CAIRNS
T
ough economic conditions globally are increasingly forcing people to look for innovative housing solutions, and among the most popular current trends are dual living that provides a rental income stream and multigenerational living that cuts down on costs.
isn’t immune to this trend. “Young adults are living with their parents for longer, affordable retirement accommodation is in short supply, and homeownership is frequently delayed for years as young families and first-time buyers now have to save for bigger deposits,” says Geffen.
According to Sandy Geffen, executive director, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, South Africa
According to the last South African census, just over 50% of the country’s households are
multigenerational, reflecting a study reported in Time magazine last November. The study further noted that more young adults (aged 18 to 34) in the US are living with their parents now than at any time since 1940. Geffen says local estate agents are reporting an ever-increasing number of queries for properties that will accommodate extended families.
We are extremely honoured to be recognised by New World Wealth as the leading residential estate in South Africa, and keep it our aim to be rated as the top estate in the world. This accomplishment wouldn’t have been possible without support from the Drakenstein Municipality, the Western Cape Government and all our partners. RYK NEETHLING, MARKETING DIRECTOR, VAL DE VIE ESTATE, PAARL
Time to eliminate non-legal real estate operators A new initiative launched last month by the Estate Agency Affairs Board (EEAB) whereby estate agents have to register themselves for digital accreditation through PrivySeal, will go a long way toward protecting the public against illegal operators in the property industry, says Annette Evans, general manager, the Institute of Estate Agents of South Africa Western Cape. All key bodies in the property industry agree that consumers need to deal only with registered estate agents, as they,
after going through extensive training and qualifying examinations, can be trusted with the intricacies of property buying and selling, says Evans. PrivySeal is a digital seal which offers a hyperlinked verification certificate that confirms the realtime registration status of the estate agent in question. This summarises the agent’s professional credentials and enables members of the public to check that the person they are dealing with is registered and suitably qualified in their field.
The PrivySeal is only displayed once it is confirmed via the EAAB’s database that the agent concerned has a valid Fidelity Fund Certificate (FFC). The PrivySeal should be embedded into all agents’ email signatures and their digital media, such as websites and social media profiles. As from this month, it is a requirement for all agents to be registered with PrivySeal, and to use the service. Members of the public are urged to check whether they are dealing with current FFC holders, says Evans.
Camps Bay entry-level price up by R2m to R8,5m
T
he entry-level price in Camps Bay currently stands at around R8,5m, some R2m up year on year from last year’s R6,5m. In reality, though, there is now very little to buy below R10m, say Rochelle Serman and Lyn Pope, Seeff agents for the area. With 104 properties sold in the suburb for the 2015 year, activity was very similar to that of 2014 when 109 properties were sold. “What we have seen this year, though, is that almost
20% of the 44-odd properties sold this year, were above the R20m price mark.” Serman says the high demand has outweighed the stock supply and this has moved the entry-level price of an old freestanding home to a record high of R8,5m. This in turn has created a push from the bottom upwards, increasing prices and sales over the R20m price mark and causing a shortage in quality stock in the R10m to R15m price band.
The agents go on to say that the growth trend in the prices is clearly evident when you look at the PropStats data. As at July 2013, some 16 freehold house sales fell below the R10m price band. By July 2014, this had dropped to only four. Then, to only three in July 2015 and this year, only two sales have been recorded below this price level. Serman says buyers represent a wide demographic and come from across the globe, and they are still seeing plenty of relocations from Gauteng.
T
he recent local government elections were unusual for many reasons. Most significant of those was that although voters were deciding who would run their municipalities, the big political parties ran their campaigns on national issues.
The results also confirmed that a growing number of South Africans are demanding some sort of change. It was very evident that there is dissatisfaction with how the government is being run. The question now is how much the newly installed local governments can actually do to meet voter expectations. If the major issues in the election were national ones, what difference can be made at a municipal level? In particular, South Africans are worried about the state of the economy, a lack of jobs, and poverty. These are matters that really need to be systematically addressed by the national government. However, local authorities actually have a big role to play.
There is also a huge amount munici palities can do to support small businesses. Creating one-stop shops where entrepreneurs can receive all the regulatory assistance and information they need to start and operate small businesses can be invaluable. Local enterprises can also be involved in public-private partnerships in the delivery of services, which can not only improve the quality of those services, but also create jobs. The reality is that even though there are structural issues with South Africa’s economy at a national level, local governments have the ability to make their own municipalities significantly more attractive, particularly to small businesses. Voters will be watching this, and the parties running the councils that get this right are likely to be the ones that get more support in the future.
The country even has an official policy framework on Local Economic Development that specifically deals with what municipalities should be doing. Unfortunately it is one of the many initiatives in South Africa that has been well-conceived but poorly executed. The easy place for local governments to start, therefore, is to do better what they should be doing already. This begins with recognising that any economic activity is dependent on local infrastructure. Well-maintained roads, reliable water and electricity supply, and effective public transport are just the basic requirements for making an economy work. Another non-negotiable is eradicating corruption. There can be no efficiency within municipalities where officials are serving themselves instead of their communities. Local governments can also create an enabling investment environment by streamlining their administration. Economic activity naturally flows to areas where the application processes for things such as planning applications, zoning and property transfers are quicker and easier.
Local governments can also create an enabling investment environment by streamlining their administration

here’s a village feel to Green Point, with its narrow streets backing onto Signal Hill, the open spaces of Green Point Common with sports fields, a golf course and the Green Point Urban Park separating it from the beachfront. Residents love being so close to the centre of town and enjoy an outdoor-active lifestyle. The beach is close by for all forms of watersports. There are clubs for most major sports based on the Green Point Common, including a new athletics stadium, and, of course, the landmark Cape Town Stadium is right there for international sporting events and concerts. While it once was the sleepy, lessfashionable neighbour to trendy De Waterkant, Green Point now has a thriving cafe culture and cosmopolitan vibe of its own. Along Main Road local institution Giovanni’s Deli has been serving authentic Italian food in the area for 30 years. For food shopping there’s a Spar and a Woolworths Food, and
the Cape Quarter in De Waterkant and the V&A Waterfront are within walking distance for more varied retail therapy. The suburb is a popular place for families as well as young professionals, and the Green Point Urban Park, with its well-maintained play areas, outdoor gyms, picnic spaces, biodiversity garden and lakes, is the perfect place for toddlers and schoolchildren to let off steam. Reddam House Atlantic Seaboard is the nearest private school, and schools in the City Bowl or Sea Point are also easily accessible.

THINGS TO DO:
For Green Point residents the Sea Point promenade is an extension of their own backyard – the perfect place for sociable dog-walking, running, cycling and skateboarding. Cutting back home through the urban park or heading in the other direction to Granger Bay for the Oranjezicht City Farm Market on Saturdays adds that extra splash of ocean energy to a well-balanced, urban lifestyle.
• Skateboard, cycle or run on Sea Point promenade. • Head to the beach for surfing and watersports. • Picnic and play in Green Point Urban Park. • Walk to Cape Town Stadium for international concerts and sporting events.
Agent commentary Q: What attracts buyers to the area? A: Green Point has a unique village vibe with fabulous amenities including Somerset Road packed with trendy street-side spots, shopping and more. It is within walking distance of the V&A Waterfront, and close to the CBD and main arterials. The Sea Point promenade, and Camps Bay and Clifton Blue Flag-rated beaches are on the doorstep, as is the greenbelt and the wonderful Urban Park that even offers an outdoor gym. Living in the area certainly promotes healthy living. The suburb has been transformed with all the new developments around the entire area including neighbouring De Waterkant. Green Point is now one of the most popular urban residential neighbourhoods.
Hilary Biccari and Bryan Ginsburg
Q: What can people expect to pay for property in the area? A: Gone are the days when Green Point was one of Cape Town’s suburbs where properties below R1m could be acquired. Lately buyers have to cough up from R1m to R1,7m to enter this property market, which still only gets them a bachelor apartment (parking or garaging not guaranteed) between 35m2 and 49m2. For a bigger apartment with a second bedroom and bathroom and secure parking, be prepared to pay anything between R3,3m and R4m. New developments achieve higher rand/m2 prices. The entry level for full-title cottages, mostly semi-detached from 80m2, is around R3m, whereas freestanding and multilevel luxury homes in Upper Green Point range between R10m and R15m.
Q: Who is buying property in the area and what types of properties are available? A: The increasingly popular sea front suburb offers a choice of properties including sectional title, commercial and freehold. Homes vary from apartmentliving to single- and doublestorey, semi-detached cottages, to characterful freestanding homes. These older homes are being snapped up by local and out-of-town developers and then either subdivided or sectionalised and renovated for living or resale. I meet buyers daily who are upscaling or downscaling. Increasingly, they are migrating to Cape Town from other parts of the country, attracted by the wonderful lifestyle.

The ultimate modern community MSP launches three new developments in Buh-Rein Estate. Riaan Roos, MD, tells us more
Multi-Spectrum Property (MSP) has just relaunched its brand, and now as well as award-winning developments offers fullspectrum property solutions, including residential and commercial rentals, sales and advice. The 87ha Buh-Rein Estate is the brainchild of Riaan Roos, MD, MSP, and received a SAPI award for most innovatively designed lifestyle estate. This month sees MSP launching four new developments in all, three of these being in Buh-Rein Estate.
RIAAN ROOS, MD
NEWSFLASH! ZEVENWACHT LIFESTYLE ESTATE MSP’s first retirement offerings, with prices varying from R949,900, for independent living units, to R5,279,900, for single residential dwellings, was launched on site next to the prestigious Zevenwacht Wine Estate on 14 August. On launch day, 24 units were sold! We see this one moving fast. zevenwacht-lifestyle-estate.co.za
T
he heart of my vision for BuhRein Estate was to create a safe suburb that fulfils all the modern needs of any family. Our three latest developments – Chandelle, Langley Hills and Sable Ridge – offer a choice of apartments and duplexes that epitomise just this. In each case prices include all costs, and no deposit is required. Also, 100% bonds are available, for those who qualify, through our financial solutions arm, i-Fin (ifinsolutions.co.za).
Chandelle
Chandelle offers a total of 147 apartments with two bedrooms and one bathroom, set in seven blocks with three storeys each. Priced from

Neighbourhood
R739,900, Chandelle is perfectly located within Buh-Rein Estate, bordered by green open space and the multipurpose sports field together with the community lifestyle centre. The apartments include a fitted kitchen with granite countertops, built-in cupboards in all bedrooms, full bathroom, balcony with built-in braai, and access control. Certain ground floor units include an exclusive-use garden area.
Langley Hills
Langley Hills is situated in a wellestablished part of Buh-Rein Estate, and is one of the last apartment developments within Phase 1. It includes 60 apartments varying in size from 65m² to 70m², each with two bedrooms (main en suite) and one and a half bathrooms. Langley Hills also offers access control, fibre-optic connectivity, spacious kitchen layouts, tiling throughout, built-in cupboards and patio with built-in braai. It overlooks/borders two individual open spaces or parks with play structures and jogging trails. These apartments are priced from R899,900.
Sable Ridge
Sable Ridge is a small, intimate residential development within Buh-Rein Estate with 53 duplex units made up of three types, from 142m² with three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, study, covered braai stoep,
kitchen, lounge, dining room and single garage, to 172m² with three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, study, covered braai stoep, kitchen, lounge, dining room and double garage. Each dwelling is built on its own private erf with an average size of 190m². This development includes landscaped private open spaces with play equipment for children. Prices vary from R1,449,900 to R1,999,900. Currently 21 of these dwellings are under construction, and the entire Sable Ridge development will be completed early in 2017. MSP has a sterling track record, and my dream to help create a better foundation for people through property is evident in what we have achieved up till now. I want to share through MSP that making a new beginning in property does not have to be a daunting process. When it comes to big life decisions – whether wanting to find a better home or investment for your budget, or wanting to find a better way of maximising your home or investment – we have multispectrum solutions at hand. Similarly, at Buh-Rein Estate we offer a range of lifestyle choices, but they all have a number of characteristics in common: great value for money, superb finishes, quality, security, technology and lifestyle. Buh-Rein really is the neighbourhood that you have always dreamed of.
