Cavalli Restaurant’s new winter menu features a feast of warming flavours

Calitzdorp

WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED

Did you know? One of Calitzdorp’s main claims to fame is its production of some of the best port wines in South Africa. This is due to its hot and dry weather, which has been likened to that of the Douro Valley in Portugal.

Warm inside by the fire in the chic modern interior, in the comfortable swivel chairs designed for turning often to admire the view of clouds scudding across the Stellenbosch valley, mountain peaks engulfed in mist and the first sign of rain in weeks, we were lucky to have the perfect weather to be tasting the new winter menu.

3 Robertson

Since chef Calum Anderson joined Cavalli last year, the frills of fine dining have been discarded to focus on what he calls "everyday gourmet". This simple approach, infused with plenty of creativity and gorgeous presentation, is not too grand to start with a warming bowl of mushroom soup, the velvet

Route 62, also known as the Wine Route, runs through the wine-producing areas of Robertson, Worcester, Tulbagh, among others, making it one of the longest wine routes in the world.

texture, satisfying richness, swirl of porcini cream and crunchy carrot croutons earning it a place in the taste memory bank. The beautifully spiced beef bobotie wontons with asparagus on parsnip purée, and the pulled pork cannelloni with juniper sauce and caramelised apple continue the hearty winter flavours of the new menu. The generous portions mean you could easily lunch just off starters. But the mains are well worth moving on to (and with the winter special of 15% off a three-course meal, there’s no reason to hold back). The delicate linefish escabeche is brought to life by char-grilled calamari, fennel, red pepper sauce and squid ink risotto. I loved the cardamom crusting on the chunky slices of sirloin steak, beautifully plated with smoky mash and variations of beetroot, and the miso aubergine pancakes and ginger jus with the duck breast. The turmeric cake dessert was especially intriguing, with the unexpected sweet treatment of the spice combining with vanilla rose custard and citrus kalamazi marshmallow to keep the palate entertained to the last mouthful.

our years ago, there was nothing where Cavalli Estate now stands. The extensive fynbos gardens, paddocks, the dam and elegant but low-profile restaurant, tasting room and art gallery were all created in the last four years. This clean slate allowed the family to build the first Green Star-rated restaurant in South Africa. The focus is on local ingredients and ethical produce, with a functional herb garden beside the restaurant and a large vegetable garden growing heirloom vegetables for the kitchen.

First on shelf Try these five top picks from the 2017 harvest WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

W

hile some winemakers have barely rinsed out the cellar from this year’s harvest, already the first releases are on the shelves. While you may not want to cellar these for long, if you’re after an uncomplicated wine best enjoyed while fresh, fruity and young, try these top picks.

Van Loveren Sauvignon Blanc

Arguably the king of pocket-friendly producers in the Breede River Valley, Van Loveren’s Sauvignon Blanc is made in a fragrant tropical style, so expect plenty of gooseberry and green fig character on the nose. At a shade over 12% it’s fairly low in alcohol, and won’t complain if you splash it over a few blocks of ice.

Neethlingshof Unwooded Chardonnay

Tired of over-oaked buttery Chardonnays? This palate-pleasing Unwooded Chardonnay from winemaker De Wet Viljoen is a perfect pairing for late-summer salads or grilled chicken. Grapes from 18-yearold vineyards were hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks for a wine that is fresh on the palate, with hints of pear and citrus. Drink now, or hold onto it for up to two years.

De Krans Pinotage Rosé

The first vines on this family-owned property outside Calitzdorp were planted way back in 1936, and today De Krans has built up an enviable reputation for both port-style and table wines. Limited skin contact gives this Pinotage Rosé a delightful watermelonpink blush, with a nose of rose petals and strawberries. Delicate red fruit and fresh acidity make it a great option for the last warm days of autumn.

Terra del Capo Pinot Grigio

Terra del Capo is the home of the Italian varietals in the Anthonij Rupert stable of wines. The grapes for the 2017 Pinot Grigio were picked from three separate vineyards, each contributing its own character to the wine: grapes from Groenekloof outside Darling bring fresh citrus flavours and structure, the Elandskloof beyond Piketberg contributes fresh apple and bright acidity, while vineyards from L’Ormarins estate in Franschhoek bring the richness of stone fruits. An excellent food wine.

Du Toitskloof Chenin Blanc

The Breedekloof wine region is justifiably known as the home of Chenin Blanc, and while this latest release from Du Toitskloof Winery won’t win too many medals, it’s a pocket-friendly quaffer that ably introduces the region’s signature grape. The vineyards were harvested at night to preserve plenty of freshness in the wine, which boasts plenty of tropical fruit notes on the nose and palate. Cellar master Shawn Thomson reckons it’s a perfect match for grilled fish, mussels or a seafood potjie.

A wonderful winter festival Enjoy a fun few days away in the Robertson Wine Valley with the 14th annual Wacky Wine Weekend WORDS: MOLLY FITZ-PATRICK

O

ne of the country’s most popular and family-friendly wine festivals, the Wacky Wine Weekend, returns to the Robertson Wine Valley from Thursday, 1 June, until Sunday, 4 June. This year’s tagline is “Taste the Lifestyle”, and that’s exactly what you’ll get – a taste of the idyllic life in the Robertson Wine Valley. More than 40 wine estates, boutique wineries and other tourism establishments – from Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor and Robertson – will be involved in the festival, which promises to be the best one yet. Expect award-winning wines, tutored tastings, wine pairings, cellar tours and fun for the whole family. Throughout the weekend, there will be live music, arts and crafts stalls, sports and delicious country food. There will be something for everyone, so, if you can, take a long weekend and enjoy all four days. Your weekend passport, at R180 per person, will get you into all the participating establishments, such as Arabella, Bemind, Paul Rene MCC, Excelsior, Weltevrede and Rietvallei. Your ticket

will also include a complimentary glass and six wine tasting coupons per winery. If you’d like to take advantage of the surrounding landscape, bring your hiking shoes or your mountain bike and explore the countryside in between all the festivities. As the festival doesn't take place at a single location, festivalgoers will have to travel to the different venues. The Wacky Wine Weekend has a policy of zero tolerance for drinking and driving, so it’s essential to sort out your transport beforehand. You can find all the help and information you need on the Wacky Wine Weekend website. Each establishment will have its own programme and selection of activities, so you’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice. We recommend going through the programme on the website and deciding what you’d like to do in advance, so you’re not overwhelmed by the many choices on offer. The Wacky Wine Weekend promises to be a fun and memorable event that you and your family will be talking about for years to come. Tickets are available online at Webtickets (goo.gl/IyPD1R).

Recycling made easy for homes and businesses by collection service Recycle 1st WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED

W

e all know that recycling is essential for a greener future, but don’t usually enjoy the clutter as bottles and plastic build up in the hallway or garage. Recycle 1st collects from you and guarantees that all the recyclables are sorted and sent to reputable end users. Owner, Anthea Fransman, tells us about her business journey. Q: How did your business start? A: A fter nine years in the banking industry, I knew it was time to follow my heart and open a business with more purpose for me. What I really wanted was a green business, a business that could help people act more responsibly towards the environment. I found a gap in the market in the Northern Suburbs where no one was collecting recycling from homes, and Recycle 1st began its journey to a greener future for all. Initially we offered bi-monthly collections to Northern Suburbs residents only, but we soon had to widen our scope to include Table

or support in growing the business F sustainably I joined business incubator, Shanduka Black Umbrellas. It started with lots of training as they strongly believe in equipping the business owner with knowledge and expertise. I most enjoyed the one-on-one interaction with a mentor and their business developer. They have a great panel of experts that can help in every facet of your business and I fully trust their approach and their advice. Tangibly, my business has managed to increase revenue by almost R1m since joining Shanduka.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I chose Epping due to its location close to other players in the industry. There are waste paper recyclers, and metal recyclers. In addition, we have many customers in the City Bowl and Southern Suburbs, and Epping was in good proximity to these while still being affordable in comparison to other industrial areas. Q: How did you find your premises? A: A combination of brokers and Google searches.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: A n engineering company, aluminium window manufacturer and a cleaning company. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: They range from R40/m2 to R50/m2. Q: How many people go through your business each day? A: We don’t have any foot traffic, as this is not how our business operates. We collect from homes and businesses, from offices or buildings. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We’re looking to move more into business collections, and expand into the rest of South Africa within the next three years. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, we have a website. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Home recycling collections. Because our business is not just about profit but fundamentally about protecting the environment, our clients know that we personally ensure all recyclables collected are actually recycled with the end users.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: These premises have a section for warehouse and a yard area too, which is needed for the large skips for glass and containers to house cardboard.

Tuck into some winter trends Rev up your interior decor with heart-warming 2017 style WORDS: ANDRÉ FIORE IMAGES: ISTOCK

N

ip in the air? Look no further for a reason to indulge in a little indoor time – and see if you won’t be tempted by some of the bold trends that this winter brings with it.

Prickly pear

Succulents have been on the decor scene for a while, but taking centrestage this season is the cactus. Move over rock rose, this prickly form is spiking interest in fabrics, ceramics, table decor, vinyls and stand-alone sculptures. Mix cactuses with greenery prints and patterns, and throw in some hot reds, corals, oranges and yellows for a chic and bold “delicious foliage” look.

Hello velvet

No shrinking violet, velvet is making an appearance that is hard to miss. Forget the single colour or simple weave, cut pile, textured and printed velvets are everywhere, and looking their best. Set against mainly dark and dramatic backgrounds, we’re seeing florals and foliage in greens, golds, berries and peacocks with a Rococo feel. Pair this sumptuous look with

copper and brass accents, clean lines and dramatically washed-out walls.

Black beauty

While black has been making a sexy return in kitchens and bathrooms with matte black taps, gloriously moody basins, bathtubs and sanitaryware, it’s just made the leap to the table too. Black cutlery is on shelves nationwide, and it looks good. Use it in pared-back industrial settings, or pair it with white patterns for an op art twist or the eternal ascot look.

Think pink

Perfect for winter, pink is no longer just a bright or candy shade for the kids. The new hue is powdery, dusty and charming. Feminine, harmonious, opulent and sophisticated, it’s a beautiful companion to nude wood, raw cement, greys, black, bronze, copper and pearl.

GETTING FIRED UP: You can’t think of winter without picturing a roaring fireplace. We take a look at the different fireplaces available and why they’re so great. Wood-burning The most traditional option, there’s something romantic about woodburning fireplaces. Though they often mean more work than some of the other types, they add great ambience to any room. Gas Superefficient, while still giving you the feeling of a traditional woodburning fireplace, gas alternatives are becoming increasingly popular. These are ideal for those who want the ambience of wood-burning, with a modern touch.

Light moments

With a move away from standard shop buys, quirky lighting is big this winter. Showcasing a space as well as a fixture, it’s a great way to stamp individuality on a room.

Electric With options to suit all needs, electric fireplaces have come a long way. This is the most affordable option, though it will never look completely realistic. Outdoor Outdoor fireplace options are endless, and are common in South Africa. They’re great for when you’re entertaining visitors, and create a great atmosphere in your backyard.

What makes a modern home better? Keep these factors in mind when looking for the perfect home to suit your lifestyle WORDS: HELEN GRANGE IMAGES: ISTOCK

T

wo words define modern lifestyles: mobility and flexibility. Building a contemporary home or home office, therefore, has become all about embracing these freedoms in design elements and materials chosen. The global work-from-home trend means that modern homes, in particular, are multifunctional environments where people can work, eat, relax and play. “Homeowners spend more time at home, often working from home, so they need spaces that are well proportioned and easily adaptable, with a considered balance between interior and exterior,” says Karlien Thomashoff, architect, Thomashoff and Partner Architects in Pretoria. Thomashoff is currently working with Saint-Gobain South Africa, specialising in sustainable habitat solutions. They are contracted in the construction of a novel show home called Stand 51 that, when finished, should epitomise this building evolution. To be built on Val de Vie Estate in the PaarlFranschhoek Valley and completed by the end of the year, Stand 51 will be designed and constructed using energy-efficient materials where the top objectives are health, comfort, safety, flexibility and environmental protection. These are some other home or workspace considerations:

Acoustic environment

Creating an ideal acoustic environment is key, especially in work spaces, says Michelle Cerruti, residential and hotel sector manager, Saint-Gobain Construction Products. “The impact of acoustics on our overall mood and wellbeing is profound. Sound insulation contributes to a sense of security and privacy,” she says. Homes can be made significantly quieter by the choice of materials for walls, ceilings and doors, and among the sound-absorbing materials used to achieve this are special plasterboards, acoustic ceilings and mineral wools used for insulation.

Lighting

Lighting is equally important, especially in workplaces, considering that a World Green Building Council study found that productivity increases by 18% in the presence of daylight. “In buildings, access to natural light, fresh air and outside views has been shown to make people feel more energetic and inspired. This typically results in higher test scores at school, better productivity at work and faster healing times in hospitals,” says Cerruti. Glass, window films or architectural membranes are used to optimise natural lighting, while wall coverings, ceilings or flooring can contribute to the distribution of daylight and to the aesthetic of a space.

Materials

Materials such as glass, plasterboards, mineral wools and External Thermal

Insulation Composite Systems serve to moderate indoor temperatures, and help to keep the air fresh inside the building, which in its design should give consideration to solar heat gain through the overall building shape, orientation, number and size of windows and the ability of surfaces to reflect heat, says Cerruti. “Buildings that are designed and built better, with materials that optimise comfort, are often energy efficient as well. These will save energy costs over the lifetime of the building or home,” she says. This visionary approach to building is proving to be a strong drawcard for buyers who work from home, and they are prepared to invest accordingly, judging by feedback to a questionnaire on the Stand 51 website (stand51.co.za/ better-home). Saint-Gobain’s survey showed that almost 90% of potential buyers prefer to work from home, and 84,93% believe a home office is a valuable investment. Acoustic and thermal comfort was important to 91% of respondents, who said they want their home to be quiet, day and night, as well as consistently warm and cool all year-round.

Flexibility

Flexible spaces are also important, where an office can convert into a living space and vice versa, as this ensures optimal use of smaller homes. In other words, the modern building is expected to perform well beyond being a shelter. It needs to service today’s lifestyle.

WHY BUYERS CHOOSE BETTER BUILDINGS The Val de Vie Estate is a good example of world-class modern living. This means comfortable, multifunctional, energy-efficient homes in which every square metre is optimised based on external views and the environment, with state-of-the-art technology maintaining security and offering highspeed internet connectivity. The homes on the estate meet an increasing desire for a lock-up-and-go lifestyle. “Our resident demographics are evenly split between those commuting to Gauteng; those working from home; people working in Paarl, Wellington, or Stellenbosch; those working in the Northern Suburbs (Durbanville/Bellville); and retired couples or swallows,” says Ryk Neethling, marketing director, Val de Vie Estate. Investment value is another high priority. “Our residents and buyers are discerning and come to us because they want the best an estate has to offer, and they want homes that perform the best and which will be excellent investments in the long term,” says Neethling.

here’s a heady recipe to the Cape Winelands lifestyle: take stunning mountain scenery, add picturesque vineyards, historic small towns, seriously good food and wine, and season it well with hiking trails in unspoilt nature reserves, outdoor activities and world-class golf courses. Whether you choose the Winelands as a place to bring up your family, a place to retire or a destination for regular indulgent weekends and holidays, it’s unique beauty will cast a spell on you.

mix of affordable cafes, artisan delis, farmers’ markets and fine restaurants.

“Where else can you do a wine tasting tour on horseback?” says Natalie Scheepers of Baruch Guest House in Stellenbosch. “My personal favourite is wine tasting with the tuk-tuk.”

For a change of scenery she suggests heading to the beaches close by or a coastal drive along the R44 with amazing views and penguins at Betty’s Bay. International visitors also come to the area to enjoy the world-class golf courses.

These private wine tours are a popular activity for visitors. “The Wine Tram is the best thing that happened to Franschhoek to put accessibility on the map,” says Colin Atkins of Le Petit Paris. Using the original railway tracks laid down in 1904 the tram links many of the Franschhoek Valley wine estates on a hop-on, hop-off basis. With fine-dining destinations such as Foliage, Ryan’s Kitchen, Reuben's, Grande Provence and The Kitchen at Maison, the village of Franschhoek is a gourmet food haven. There’s so much fantastic food on wine estates throughout the Winelands, and gourmet picnics in summer, that you could eat out in style at a different establishment for months on end. And the charming university town of Stellenbosch, its historic streets lined with oak trees, is unmatched in its

The mountain backdrop that frames the Winelands landscape allows nature to be woven into everyday life for residents and visitors, with hiking to waterfalls, mountain bike trails and summer picnic concerts to delight in. “Our guests love the botanical gardens in the town centre, the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, and there’s a wonderful, small game reserve at the Villiera Estate.”

With rolling lawns, mountain streams and plenty of space to run and play, the wine estates are paradise for kids too. Animal lovers can visit Butterfly World, Giraffe House or Eagle Encounters, classic car enthusiasts will enjoy the Wijnland Auto Museum, and the Root 44 market is perfect for the whole family. Residents appreciate the excellent amenities of the Winelands, such as the renowned schools in Stellenbosch, Somerset West and Paarl; Stellenbosch University; and good hospitals. Each town has its own character and a strong community feel, which isn’t diluted by the number of visitors but rather shared with them. “People here are naturally friendly; they have time not to only talk,

but, more importantly, to listen to each other,” says Colin. “The mix of a quiet, simple countryside with competitive wine making, restaurants and hospitality is fascinating.”

Secure your dream home

T

he best way to secure a property you want to buy, says Steve van Wyk, MD, Seeff Centurion, is to ensure that you put in an offer that will get the seller interested. Properties below the R1,2m – R1,5m price mark often attract the interest of multiple buyers and if you're really interested, says van Wyk, it’s best to go in with your best possible price offer. Similarly, any well-priced property close to schools, good transport and those in top-class security complexes and estates, tend to attract good interest. In a sellers’ market, it’s especially advisable to do your homework in terms of submitting a good offer. In this type of market, says van Wyk, there tends to be more buyers who compete for a limited supply of property. In a buyers’ market, there tends to be more properties and fewer buyers. The onus then tends to shift to pricing and a smart seller will price in line with the market trends to attract good offers. In this type of market, buyers tend to have more bargaining power and, since they are likely to be one of a limited pool of offers, can come in a bit lower, says van Wyk. Buying a property is always an exciting activity, but, van Wyk says, it requires careful consideration as it's a substantial financial and legal commitment.

Realtors place location ahead of all other considerations for good reason; where your home is situated will determine not only the future value of your investment, but will also impact many aspects of your everyday life in years to come, because you are buying a lifestyle as well as bricks and mortar. And the wrong lifestyle choice at the outset could spell endless misery down the line. SANDY GEFFEN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SOTHEBY'S INTERNATIONAL REALTY SOUTH AFRICA

Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village to be completed by 2018

M

ount Edgecombe Retirement Village will be a reality by August 2018. This is according to Murray Collins, CEO, Collins Residential: a subsidiary of the H Collins and Son Group. At the ground-breaking event that took place at the Kindlewood Estate on 24 April, Collins said, “This is an extremely motivating phase to be in, as all our extensive research and careful planning is finally being implemented to make Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village a reality. “The breaking of ground also signifies a huge triumph for Collins Residential and Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village, as we deliver a product that

stems from a real shortage in the real estate market. Based off our extensive research, as well as the data collected from our association with the Retire KZN campaign, we are confident that we are delivering what the market needs. Most significant is the fact that our retirement estate is the only one within the Greater Umhlanga area that has reached this point within a number of years, making this a significant moment for retirement within KwaZulu-Natal.” Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village is starting with the construction of the first of three phases of this development, which includes a 6,500m² care centre which will be fully functional by the time the residents move in.

Interest in Karoo tourism industry growing

I

ncreasingly the Karoo is seen as a compelling and exciting tourism destination, not only for tourists but also for those wanting to find a relaxing getaway property of their own which can also provide a regular income stream, says Wayne Rubidge, area principal, Pam Golding Properties Karoo. “Many people are keen to explore the tranquil countryside in an escape from the stresses and bustle of busy city life, and the Karoo has such variety to offer, with character-filled towns and different landscapes to suit every individual preference. “In light of economic constraints domestic tourism has flourished, with cost-conscious South Africans eager to visit easily accessible destinations without even having to cross the borders or travel overseas. This has made the acquisition

of a tourism or accommodation establishment very attractive to those wanting to relocate permanently to a country location,” says Rubidge. Rubidge adds that considering that the Karoo encompasses four provinces, the Free State and all three Cape provinces, its central location ensures that all road travellers going from north to south pass through it – with a high probability that due to the distances involved they will sleep over in one of the Karoo’s numerous towns. Because of this, accommodation establishments have proved to be a popular investment. Many of the leading destinations include towns like Prince Albert, Graaff-Reinet and Cradock, and many others which all have their own unique attractions, including three national parks.

By building ecosystems that have the capacity to respond to developmentinduced changes, we will be ensuring that we are creating a lasting impact on the well-being of our people. Our partnership in driving this northern development area (Durban) is one of the cornerstones of this principle. HAMISH ERSKINE, CEO, DUBE TRADEPORT CORPORATION

clubhouse, library, assisted-living units and clinic, is one of our most successful developments to date. Most of the construction and landscaping have been completed, which means buyers can immediately move in and enjoy an active lifestyle,” says Hein Ehlers, founder and group CEO, Devmark Property Group. “The residents living here are very active, energetic, and social and enjoy life to the fullest. Garden and house cleaning services give residents peace of mind so that they can just lock up and go – providing a total no-fuss lifestyle.” According to Ehlers, there has been a significant increase in interest from buyers wanting to move to Cape Town and surrounds. “Many upcountry people are moving to Cape Town due to the quality in lifestyle and security it offers. Helderberg Manor is the ideal retirement option for anyone over the age of 50.” Six two-bedroom apartments (with underground parking) are available at R1,595m each, and only three one-bedroom apartments (also with underground parking) are available at R1,295m each.
