inotage, that proudly South African grape born of a marriage between Cinsaut (aka Hermitage) and Pinot Noir, has long been seen as a cheap and cheerful addition to the wine cabinet. From bottles brimming with mocha-chocolate notes to the burnt-rubber aromas of mass-produced plonk, it’s a wine that hasn’t always had the best reputation. But that’s changing, as a handful of cellars apply themselves to producing Pinotage worth the extra spend. If you want to taste just how good Pinotage can be, try of these premium examples.

In Granger Bay What? Not Another Pop-up

P

Save your pennies and invest in a bottle or three of premium Pinotage

Lanzerac Pionier Pinotage

This flagship release from Lanzerac Wine Estate, where the grape was grown commercially for the first time, is a fine example of premium Pinotage. Sourced from older vineyards high in the Jonkershoek Valley, the Pionier is matured in oak for 18 months after fermentation, adding excellent ageing potential to the wine: up to 12 years, suggests Lanzerac winemaker Wynand Lategan. The 2015 vintage received a five-star rating in the Platter’s South African Wine Guide, while the Pionier Pinotage 2014 received the prestigious Absa Top 10 Pinotage Trophy last year.

Cape of Good Hope Basson Pinotage

This terroir-driven range from Anthonij Rupert Wines taps into some of the Cape’s most interesting pockets of vineyard, and this unique Pinotage is no exception. Named for the family that tends the vineyards grown high on the slopes of the Paardeberg, the ongoing battle between farmer, baboons and buck means only limited quantities are available each vintage, but it’s well worth seeking out a bottle. Aged in older oak barrels for 14 months, and then in bottle for a further two years before release, the result is a remarkable wine rich in berries, spice and structure.

Spioenkop Elgin Pinotage

Pinot Noir thrives in the cool climes of Elgin, so for Koen Roose, it made perfect sense to plant the first Pinotage in the valley here in 2008. A decade on, he’s been proved resoundingly right, and his Spioenkop Elgin Pinotage displays an altogether more elegant side to the cultivar. Showing off its Pinot Noir parentage, expect more freshness on the palate along with plenty of perfume and dark cherries. His “1900” Pinotage is equally good, blending Elgin and Stellenbosch fruit.

hat makes a stay at The Taj Hotel unique is that you get all the comfort and indulgence you’d expect from a five-star hotel, but you still feel that you’re experiencing Cape Town as a city. Its central location means you can lie on your expansive bed, stare up at exquisite views of Table Mountain and listen to the sounds of taxis hooting, birds calling and the day drawing to a close. I’d been asked to review the Jiva Spa downstairs, and what a treat it was. The two-hour Cape Fynbos treatment I had is popular with international visitors who are keen to learn more about this unique biome known for its medicinal properties. The massage treatment combines fynbos with marula oil, while a rhassoul clay, Atlantic sea salt and rooibos tea powder scrub and wrap are also part of the experience. A cup of marula and rooibos tea at the end was also a highlight, as were the wooden beads given to all spa guests. It’s this attention to detail that sets The Taj apart, and this was also evident in the theatrical and utterly delicious tasting menu we got to experience at the fine dining restaurant, Bombay Brasserie. Made up of five decadent courses (and multiple dishes), highlights included the roasted corn soup with turmeric popcorn, the Tandoori Norwegian salmon starter, the “smoking” sorbet palate cleanser and a Karoo lamb curry with sautéed spinach and garlic. My partner and I declared it the best curry we had eaten in years and vowed to return again soon. We ended off with a trio of desserts. Besides the Bombay Brasserie, The Taj has other dining and drinks options, including The Twankey Bar, which is known for its striking decor and well-known “bearded barman”, mixologist AJ Snetler, who can be found behind the marble bar mixing up award-winning concoctions. Established in 1903, Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces is one of Asia’s largest group of hotels, made up of 95 hotels across India and 16 hotels all over the world.

Ramen rules

The flavours of Japan and Korea come to Rondebosch with authentic sushi and ramen WORDS & IMAGE: KIT HEATHCOCK

R

ondebosch food lovers couldn’t believe their luck when Haru opened in the restaurant block of Campground Road home to Some Oaks Bistro and Michael’s Kitchen. Haru is an authentic Japanese restaurant with a contemporary vibe and a diverse menu of sushi and ramen bowls that has won over an immediate following. Owner Denis Sung moved to Cape Town from Korea several years ago and this is his first South African restaurant. He works with chef Karen Hwang to develop a menu that is as true to Japanese and Korean traditions as possible while allowing for Western tastes. The small restaurant has clean, light lines and comfortable benches with bright cushions. The light wood bistro tables fill up quickly in the evenings, so it’s advisable to book ahead, but at lunchtime, you can drop in with the regulars for a big bowl of ramen or take advantage of the midday-only Bento box. I chose the Ton-kotsu ramen, a delicate slow-cooked broth of pork bones, with thin noodles, slices of pork belly, nori, a seven-minute egg, bean sprouts and spring onions. It was a meal in

itself, which was gentle, soothing and sustaining, and had me draining the bowl to the last drop. Other bowls I would like to go back for are the classic Shoyu ramen and several intriguing Korean specialities: a cold noodle broth, Mul-naengmyeon, spicy Bibimnaengmyeon, as well as the spicy Korean version of instant noodles, Shin Ramyun. There are also the irresistiblesounding Yaki Gyoza dumplings, filled with crispy fried pork and chives, which were delivered to a neighbouring table along with a gorgeous-looking Bento box with light tempura vegetables and a selection of sushi. Too full to do justice to anymore tastings, I ordered a takeaway sushi platter for later. That evening we found the nigiri, as promised, generously balanced on the fish to rice ratio, and salmon maki rolls and tuna California rolls beautifully put together. A calm atmosphere, friendly service and occasional tantalising wafts of aromatic oolong jasmine tea ( just one of the speciality teas served here) make Haru a welcome respite from city life. The menu will be updated in May, so there’s more to keep coming back for, even for regulars who have worked their way through the whole menu.

My business neighbourhood Heritage blends with contemporary creativity at The Jupiter Drawing Room’s new offices on Church Square WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

IMAGE: SUPPLIED

E

stablished advertising agency, The Jupiter Drawing Room recently moved offices to the newly refurbished Speakers Corner building in the CBD. MD Michelle Beh tells us more about the business. Q: How did your business start? A: We’re a fully integrated advertising agency that was started over 23 years ago in Cape Town. After opening our doors in 1994 with the three founding members – Kevan Aspoas, Joanne Thomas and Ross Chowles – and one client, we’ve grown to be recognised as one of South Africa’s most awarded agencies. When friends of the agency hear our name, they immediately think of our Chesterfield couch and our open-door policy when it comes to dogs in the office. Q: Why did you choose this area for your offices? A: We wanted to be in an area where we could be in the middle of “things” – to watch what people are eating, buying and doing. There’s always something new to discover and such a great vibe and energy in town. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We did a lot of our own online research, months of research

actually. We met with letting agents and saw so many places that didn’t meet all our needs. As soon as we found this office, we knew it was perfect for us. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: There’s a mix of old and new. We’re an agency steeped in heritage, as is the Speakers Corner building. We’ve adapted for a modern time and our clients’ changing needs, much like the building which retains the original architectural character, yet incorporates new features and modern amenities. Speakers Corner has adopted the “co-working offices” idea with shared meeting rooms and a library. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Woolworths head office is around the corner from us, interesting cafes like Kleinsky’s Delicatessen and Bread, Milk & Honey across the road, the Company’s Garden is a short walk away and we look on to Church Square, so visitors and regulars to the square are all our neighbours. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Our rental is market-related given our position in the CBD and the history of the building, which has recently been refurbished. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: We don’t rely on daily footprint, but the new office is easy for clients to

find, especially with Church Square as a landmark. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We’ve spread ourselves over two offices already, but as we grow, we would love to move into other spaces within the building. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have a website, but most of our business comes in thanks to word of mouth from existing clients and people tracking us down based on campaigns we’ve developed for our clients. We showcase our work on social media platforms such as Facebook (facebook.com/ JupiterCT) and Instagram (@jupiterthisweek). Q: What’s your most popular service? A: A s an integrated agency, we offer all spheres of communications – advertising, design, social media, content and public relations. We like to think our work harnesses some sort of emotion – be it laughter or tears. Some of our most popular commercials include Windhoek Beer “Real Men Don't Drink Pink Drinks”, Burger King “Swhopper” and more recently, Webafrica YouTube “Skip” video.

Art under the hammer

R

ecently in London, an artwork relegated to the owners’ spare room was auctioned for a few hundred thousand pounds. The owners had stashed it away and had no idea of its true value. So where do you begin finding out whether artwork in your home is worth anything?

The ins and outs of buying and selling art at auctions WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

IMAGES: SHUTTERSTOCK

Getting a valuation

Alistair Meredith, an art specialist at Strauss & Co Fine Art Auctioneers and Consultants, is well aware of the public’s intimidation around art. “We work hard to dispel that,” he says. “The auction world is totally transparent and not an intimidating space at all.” He says what people see in the movies – large, silent New York galleries with intimidating staff – has created a daunting image of exclusivity. “We run live and online art auctions, have road shows where the public can bring artworks to be valued, and we respond happily to emails requesting valuations or opinions; just provide us with a photograph of the artwork, its dimensions and the artist’s name. Sometimes it’s near impossible to value – say, an 18th century artwork with no signature.” How do they arrive at the valuation? “We rely entirely on auction precedents and are very objective and market-related; we try to find similar work sold on auction (in terms of the artist, size, medium and condition) and those results

determine broad objective guideline figures for that particular work.”

How does an art auction work?

An art auction is a simple, transparent process. “Each piece has a clearly stated guideline price. You choose how high you want to bid. If you win the auction, you pay the hammer price (and a stated premium) and it’s yours. What the work sells for is up to the market (everybody in the auction room or online). It’s very down to earth,” he says. Alistair says it’s a myth that you could inadvertently bid on an item by unconsciously scratching your nose during an auction. “You have to register before you bid, and you’ll be given a bidding paddle. When you bid, the auctioneer will ask you if you intended to do so.”

Investing in art

Alistair says, “The South African art market has exploded over the last decade. There’s been huge interest in local art from South Africans, expats and, increasingly, the international market. We’re always a little hesitant about speaking about art as a pure investment because nobody has a crystal ball, but the more research you do, the better idea you have of an artist’s trajectory. Read up and speak to dealers, art galleries, auction house specialists, but buy art you love and enjoy it every day on your wall as it appreciates.”

Suburb focus

Southern Suburbs Here's what's happening in property in Bishopscourt, Constantia and Meadowridge WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: WAYNE WARREN, NADINE VAN DRIEL & GOOGLE MAPS *Map not to scale

W

ith its tree-lined lanes, swathes of greenbelt and open stretches of common land, the Constantia Valley is full of reminders of its rural farming roots and includes some of the most desirable property in Cape Town. This is an area of large gardens, mature trees, mountain streams and vineyards, with several notable wine estates more than holding their own among the suburban development that has taken over much of the farmland in the last 50 years. The various greenbelts provide a network of trails, perfect for horse riding, mountain biking, running and walking, and you’re never too far from stunning views of the mountains and surrounding greenery.

I love being able to walk for miles on the greenbelts and the sense of history in the old wine farms. It’s a beautiful green valley that still feels connected to its agricultural past and is almost like living in the country, with quiet roads that you can safely cycle along.

Property At the top of the Constantia Valley and closest to town is Bishopscourt, a long-established suburb that’s home to various embassies and celebrities. “I enjoy the peace and tranquillity in Bishopscourt,” says a resident. “The properties are big, so neighbours are at a distance and there are very low traffic levels. It’s sheltered from the worst of the wind and the views are fantastic, looking straight up at the mountain or out over False Bay.” It’s also an easy commute to the CBD, avoiding the slow-

LAURA JORDAN, RESIDENT

moving traffic of Wynberg Hill that adds travel time for Constantia residents. Constantia Heights, flowing down the slopes below Rhodes Drive, also has large stands with mature gardens and plenty of privacy. Properties range from comfortable family homes to grand villas hidden among the trees, with the greenbelt and common land woven between the residential areas adding more space and connection to nature. More recent developments have filled in the gaps around Constantia Village with secure gated complexes, but there are always plenty of trees softening the edges.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE SOUTHERN SUBURBS: yourneighbourhood.co.za/southernsuburbs

Feeling more like a rural village than part of Cape Town are the handful of properties that make up Hope of Constantia. Sandwiched between the vineyards of Groot and Klein Constantia, and including Little Stream Tea Room and Conference Centre (on land bequeathed to the Cape Town YMCA by philanthropist Muriel Jones in 1974), in the area you feel like you’ve completely escaped the city.

Just on the other side of the M3 from Constantia Village is Cape Town’s second suburb created by the Garden City movement in 1950, Meadowridge, with a 7ha conservation area at its heart. “Meadowridge is very green and quiet with lots of parks and big old trees,” says resident Katie O’Regan. “There are similar plot sizes to Bergvliet and Tokai, but it’s well priced in comparison; people haven’t really discovered it yet.”

Schooling With the Constantia Valley’s history as a rural retreat, residents traditionally travelled to the established Southern Suburbs schools in Newlands and Rondebosch, but nowadays they have more options. The Constantia Waldorf School was established in 1967, the first Reddam House started here in 2000, there’s Herzlia Constantia Primary in Lower Constantia and Wynberg Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools are also nearby.

Explore With hikes through the greenbelt up to Cecilia Forest to explore the De Hel Nature Area – which feels like stepping into a lost jungle full of birdlife – horse riding along the Silverhurst trail and mountain biking along any of the many greenbelt trails that link across the valley, it’s easy to enjoy an active lifestyle in Constantia. AGENTS MOVE TRANSACTIONS FORWARD No home is a perfect fit – not for the seller, not for the buyer. Registered estate agents know how to overcome objections on price, date of occupation, and all the nittygritty elements that make up a property transaction. Registered estate agents have the experience to move the transaction forward.

Another good reason why you should use an estate agent
