t’s the last long weekend for a while (the next one is in June), so be sure to make the most of it. There’s plenty to do in the city, but what I’m most looking forward to is the Taste of Darling festival, which started on Thursday and will end tomorrow. The many events on offer will take place at various venues in Darling, allowing you to have a fun-filled weekend while you learn more about this “darling” town. Stellenbosch I’ve never felt more relaxed than I do living in Stellenbosch. It has all the conveniences of a big city but the atmosphere of a quaint country town. TREVOR WILLIAMS, RESIDENT

longside craft beer, gin has seen a worldwide revival as small-batch distilleries and chic cocktail bars return some of the glamour to the potent spirit once dubbed Mother’s Ruin. But imbibe in moderation at these fine cocktail bars and you’ll soon fall in love with the juniper-tinged flavours of gin.

The Gin Bar

Hidden away in a cosy courtyard behind Honest Chocolate, The Gin Bar keeps its menu small and offers an

V&A Waterfront

Did you know? While the Alfred and Victoria harbor basins have been around since the 1800s, it was only in 1988 that the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront was established. It was a subsidiary wholly owned by Transnet, created to redevelop the historic docklands around Victoria and Alfred Basins as a mixed-use area.

array of classic and creative cocktails shaken and stirred using both local and imported gins. While gin is the star attraction, there’s also a compact selection of interesting single malts and bourbons on offer. The Upstairs Bar is open in the evenings (Thursday to Saturday), which is useful when the (tiny) courtyard is full. Guided gin tastings are available for small groups.

Mother’s Ruin

Paying homage to the drink’s infamous reputation in Georgian London, Mother’s Ruin is an altogether more upmarket space than the name suggests. One of the city’s first bars devoted to gin, today you’ll find dozens of gins behind the bar, including rare and small-batch bottlings. There’s a good selection of tonics too, and the cocktails – both classic and creative – are reliably good. It’s a fine place to get acquainted with a Negroni.

The Local at Peddlars and Co If you’re in need of a G and T, but can’t be bothered to drive to the CBD, this long-standing Constantia haunt stocks more than 40 gins, alongside a range of tonics. With a sun-splashed garden a few steps away, it’s ideally suited to an uncomplicated G and T on a sunny afternoon. Feeling peckish? Book a table at the adjoining Graciales for light bites from chef Brad Ball.

Sansibar Gin Lounge

With more than 280 gins from across the world on offer, you’ll struggle to find a better-stocked bar than the Sansibar Gin Lounge at Asara Wine Estate outside Stellenbosch. Throw in a dozen different tonic waters, and a barman who knows how to shake a cocktail, and you’re in for a gin-infused treat. Want something unusual? Try the Vor gin all the way from Iceland.

Head to Bloubergstrand for the perfect sundowner spot. Choose from one of the many restaurants or bars and enjoy a drink while taking in one of the most dramatic views in Cape Town.

he views from the rooftop of the new Silo Hotel are the best in the V&A Waterfront: 360 degrees of mountain, harbour and ocean from eleven floors up – and you’re even looking down on the seagulls. This funky industrial chic hotel is the latest addition to The Royal Portfolio collection, an upbeat urban sister property to La Residence in Franschhoek and Birkenhead House in Hermanus.

Despite the high ceilings, industrial volumes delineated by the steel girders of the original grain elevator section, and huge, faceted “goldfish bowl” windows showing every angle, the public spaces have the intimacy of a select club, reflecting the boutique nature of the 28-room luxury hotel. Cape Town has already discovered the rooftop bar as a hip destination for sundowner cocktails and light snacks – perhaps prawns from the tempura bar, a Greek lamb gyro or pulled pork sandwich from the charcoal grill. Down on the sixth floor at the Willaston Bar the menu includes gourmet sandwiches and the house burger, and the Granary Cafe offers relaxed bistro comfort food. All menus are designed by executive chef Veronica Canha-Hibbert (previously of Ellerman House) who has gone for unfussy excellence. “The space is very eclectic – there’s so much to take in. The food doesn’t want to be too complicated or you get sensory overload,” says Veronica. “I thought we’d bring the food back to being as old school as possible, with three or four amazing elements on the plate that taste like they’re supposed to taste.” The steak frites with a generous slab of sirloin, hand-cut chips and a creamy bearnaise was exactly that: old school, and satisfying. The confit pork belly was beautifully moist and full of flavour with just enough crispiness set off by chunky apple chutney and pickled red cabbage. The menu is concise, with linefish, bouillabaisse or risotto being the other main dishes, and a raw bar selection offering alternatives. The dark tarte au chocolat with hazelnut ice cream, salted caramel and tiny macaroons would satisfy the most demanding chocoholic, unless you prefer the cheese trolley or the nostalgia of a peach melba. This is the place to enjoy good old-fashioned comfort food in a dramatic setting with unmatched views.

Celebrating Catch 22 You’re spoilt for choice at this popular Blouberg restaurant WORDS: LAUREN JOUBERT

N

othing says relaxation quite like a cold glass of Pinot Noir, some delicious tapas and the view of the ocean. That’s one of the reasons the Blouberg beachfront has always been a favourite spot of mine. Recently, my fiancé and I decided to give our usual sundowner spot a try for our date night. And Catch 22 did not disappoint.

Ambiance

Usually, we would sit in the sun downstairs, order cocktails and casually nibble on snack baskets. This time, we opted for a more romantic evening out and decided to venture up the big, blue staircase to the top of the restaurant. The ambiance was vibey and exciting, and the waiters welcomed us with friendly faces. We chose to sit on the balcony to enjoy the cool, sea breeze.

The Food

Catch 22 is famous for its seafood variety, but what makes it a “catch 22”, is the fact that the traditional meat dishes are just as great. We started off with the delectable, melt-in-your-mouth, Seize the Bay sushi platter. Our drinks, a craft beer for my beloved and a glass of Pinot Noir for me, arrived almost as soon as we asked for them, and our starters arrived just as promptly. The sushi was incredible, fresh and tasty, leaving us in anticipation for our main meal. I opted for a combo of grilled hake and prawns, while my fiancé ordered calamari and beer-battered hake. After nibbling on both plates, thoroughly enjoying our food, we were satisfied and in a great mood after having had one of our best date nights. If you’re familiar with this cheerful spot, but haven’t yet tried it, now is the time to make that booking and get lost in your very own catch 22.

Go go gadget! Keep an eye out for these technology trends WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE

E

very year, we see amazing advances in technology – and 2017 is no different. Here are the gadgets and trends that we can’t stop talking about.

Smartwatches

There seems to be no end in sight to the smartwatch trend. In South Africa alone, the trend has been growing phenomenally, helped by health insurance companies who make use of these devices to track their users and reward them with points. Most smartwatches can make and receive calls, send and receive messages, take photos and videos, are voice operated and, of course, can track your heart rate as well as the number of steps you walked – making them a fitness enthusiast’s dream.

Virtual Reality

4K

IMAGES: ISTOCK

We love the new trend of virtual reality show houses. Now you can view your potential new home from the comfort of your own couch. Not only is this an asset for buyers

who may live far from the property they’re looking to invest in, this can also assist off-plan buyers see the finished product. Even though this trend is still in its infancy in South Africa, it’s one that we see growing in the coming months.

Home automation

Imagine controlling all your home technology from your phone. More and more people are seeing the benefits of home automation – with one touch you can control your lights, music and house temperature; you can lock your doors and even switch on your security system.

4K TVs

Every year, new TVs are launched that take your home viewing experience to new levels, and the latest trend is 4K TVs. The 4K title refers to the resolution display – in this case it’s 3,840 x 2,160 pixels (four times the number in most Real HD TVs); and this means picture quality better than anything you’ve seen before.

be creating beautiful things that reflected myself instead of others. I have a passion for nature and the environment and wanted to somehow bring this into what I would create. It was Milo who made me take that leap of faith and start the business, hence the company name. Q: Why did you choose to move your business to Gardens? A: We felt that the space we were in previously was overpriced for what we were getting. Also, it was a bit too industrial for Love Milo and not one that we really wanted clients to visit. The Gardens studio offered the perfect solution with a property that had clean open spaces and lots of natural sunlight – a backdrop ideally suited to our brand. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We perused rental websites and Gumtree.

L

ove Milo, a nature-inspired design studio, produces beautiful ceramics, fabrics and wooden utensils all made locally. Nicki Ellis, designer and founder, tells us about moving from the old studio in Woodstock to new premises in Gardens. Q: How did your business start? A: W hen I fell pregnant with my son Milo, I felt a strong desire to create. I wanted to be an inspiration to him and be someone my children could look up to. I was working as a telecine grader for television commercials and feature films at the time, and was beginning to feel unfulfilled, as I really wanted to

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The premises are centrally located, which makes it easier for us to get around, but also for our staff and clients to access. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We have an interesting mix that includes a boxing school, a film company, and a crèche. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: A nywhere from R15,000 and up, depending on the size of the space. Obviously, the price changes if you're also renting out parking bays, not uncommon for us in Cape Town.

Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: We do wholesale to both local and international retailers and deliver orders to our online customers, so we don’t get a lot of foot traffic into our studio. I would say maybe five people a week stop by the studio. We love it when customers drop by and they’re always welcome. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Our focus is to grow our online traffic and the logistics side of the business, including our delivery system. Physically, we have no expansion plans yet. The space we have suits our staff of five perfectly. We also really believe in focus, patience and getting things right before expanding, which keeps the passion burning. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Our online portal is the main consumer shopping platform, so we aim to keep the site as up to date as possible. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: We’re best known for our natureinspired cup and wooden saucer range. All our products are made from environmentally sustainable materials, and we use blue gum – an alien tree that is usually cleared out – for our wooden products. It’s a great hard wood to use for homeware.

Winelands retirement Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

M

any people’s wish list for a retirement location is pretty similar to that of a prime holiday destination: beautiful scenery, peace and tranquillity, plenty of activities and a safe, secure environment. Thus it’s not surprising that the Cape Winelands is a popular choice, not just for Capetonians moving out of the city, but also for people from Gauteng and for Europeans looking for a sunshine climate to retire to. “Returning to the Cape for retirement felt like coming home,” says Bugs Dryburgh, who grew up in Cape Town before living in Pretoria for 35 years. “We looked at retirement options in Pretoria where we’d been very happy, and also on the Garden Route, but in the end we decided that the Cape Town area was a natural place for us. It’s very beautiful here, service delivery is more positive, and the attitude of the people is very enlightening – it’s home.”

THINGS TO DO: • Play golf at the several world-class Winelands golf clubs. • Explore mountain trails and enjoy unspoilt nature. • Go wine tasting at top wine estates • Discover art galleries, artisan shops and markets in the historic Winelands towns. • Participate in community activities like bowling and croquet, or join clubs and societies.

Bugs and his wife looked at a number of retirement villages and would have preferred one that worked on a life right scheme, but they finally settled on Helderberg Village in Somerset West. “Helderberg is sectional title ownership, meaning that you buy in rather than paying for a life right. A life right would have been better for us, leaving us with more capital, but the waiting list at these life right villages is 20 to 30 years. In six years, we’d only moved up 15 places on a list of 400!” It’s easier to find retirement properties to purchase outright, but you have to be ready to move quickly, as it’s very much a seller’s market, says Bugs. For some the decision to move to a retirement village comes at a later stage of retirement. “We retired 20 years ago from Johannesburg and chose Somerset West because we wanted to live at Erinvale, a secure golf estate opposite Vergelegen,” says Warwick Ibertson. “We recently downsized to The Somerset, an upmarket retirement village with well-built houses, which will in time have good facilities.” The Winelands lifestyle is a huge attraction for active retirees. “We love the country atmosphere of the Winelands,” adds Warwick, “and enjoy playing golf, walking and visiting wine farms with good restaurants.” The attraction of retirement villages as opposed to old age homes is that they cater for all ages and all levels of activity, so that you can settle into the community knowing that you'll never have to move. You can be active

and independent as long as you want, with the reassurance that when you eventually need them, there are facilities for assisted living and frail care, as well as practical support like transport to the shops, social gatherings at the clubhouse, a caring community and good security. With waiting lists getting longer, and supply not keeping up with demand for retirement properties in the Winelands, a new trend is for established lifestyle estates to add a retirement facility within their estate, as sought-after Val de Vie near Paarl has recently done with Val de Vie Manor. New developments currently under construction include Zevenwacht Lifestyle Village on Zevenwacht Wine Estate above Kuilsriver, which will offer assisted living facilities, and Mountain View Retirement Village in Robertson, with its own medical centre. Proximity to shops and places of worship, as well as good hospitals, ensures that established retirement estates such as De Oude Renbaan and Groeneleegte in Paarl, Paradyskloof Villas and Stellenoord in Stellenbosch remain popular, especially with locals who want to remain close to their families and communities downsizing. With demand at an all-time high, planning many years in advance seems to be the key to enjoying an idyllic Winelands retirement. Research thoroughly so that you find the village with facilities that match your lifestyle requirements and future needs.

What should buyers be looking for in a retirement development?

Retirement Insight A local retirement expert gives us the inside scoop on the Cape Winelands.

The success of a retirement village not only lies with the amenities on offer at the village, but also those in close proximity, as retirees still want to be able to keep on doing the things they are used to doing. Having shopping centres, quality hospitals and recreational activities close by attributes greatly to the success of such a development. Quality care is vital and should be combined with state-of-the-art security and mouthwatering catering. The residents want to know that their investment and their golden years are in the most capable hands. Werner Scheffer MULTI SPECTRUM PROPERTY 087 802 9003 werners@msp.property msp.property
