aternoster, one of the oldest fishing towns on the West Coast, has become a major tourist destination in the Western Cape. With its whitewashed fisherman's cottages, untouched beaches, turquoise water and world-class accommodation and restaurants, it’s easy to see why. While Stef Venter and Johan Jansen van Vuuren were visiting the Cape in 2003, they came across Paternoster. They loved the area so much that six months later they became residents. They saw the area's potential to become one of the top getaway destinations in South African (if not the world) and realised that boosting the area's tourism industry would benefit the community and create jobs. In 2010, they transformed their own home into the exquisite luxury boutique hotel, Abalone House and Spa.

We were booked into one of the Sea View Suites, which has a private patio where you can sit and soak up the glorious sea view – a perfect spot for sundowners and canapes. Once the sun had set, it was time to head to the dining room. The Reuben’s restaurant opened in October 2013 at the Abalone House and Spa and has become a popular destination not only for hotel guests, but the public too. Reuben Riffel is a well-known name associated with honouring local produce to create unique and well-thought-out South African dishes and beautiful sensory stories. For starters, we dug into the tuna tataki, with yuzu soy, pickled mustard and

avocado; and the prawn tempura, with onion relish and sriracha mayonnaise. For mains, we decided to dig into some much-needed comfort food and opted for the char-grilled Chalmar Beef, with onion puree, root vegetables and potato fondant; and the slow-braised oxtail on mash and root vegetables. The bar offered the ideal spot for a nightcap and we enjoyed some local brandies next to the fireplace before heading back to our room for the night. For a city getaway filled with breathtaking views, warm smiles and fabulous food, look no further than the Abalone House and Spa in Paternoster.

The boutique hotel, only a 90-minute drive from Cape Town, offered a superb weekend escape from my hectic day-to-day life. As we entered, we were greeted by friendly staff who showed us to our rooms to enjoy a complimentary glass of bubbly.

The guesthouse seamlessly marries Western and Eastern design, with French-style doors and richly hued Persian rugs adorning the stone floors. The rooms are all inspired by the works of artist Vladimir Tretchikoff, with signature prints displayed the walls adding to the eclectic decor and the jewel-coloured fabrics, furnishings and African ornaments finishing off the look.

wo Italian eateries have opened within a block of each other in De Waterkant in the last year, each with a different take on authentic and unpretentious Italian food and hospitality.

T

he cold clay amphorae framed with cobwebs are quite a contrast to the sleek lines of the Grande Provence tasting room. Up in the bright sunshine, there’s an edge of modernity to this Franschhoek estate, from the tasting counter to the modern art gallery that adjoins the acclaimed fine-dining restaurant. But down in the cellar Matthew van Heerden, general manager and winemaker, is quite happy to look backwards to go forward. Last year saw the maiden release of Grande Provence’s “Amphora” wine, an aromatic expression of Chenin Blanc fermented and matured in Tuscan clay amphorae. As far back as the ancient Greeks and Romans, winemakers have been using clay amphorae to ferment and mature wine. But not all clay vessels are created equal, so for its amphorae, Grande Provence turned to Manetti Gusmano and Figli from Florence, Italy, a company with seven generations of experience in fashioning clay winemaking vessels.

Tucked up a staircase off Waterkant Street, this small family trattoria is a hidden gem. Owner Enrico Tarantino is both chef and host. Italian-born, he grew up all over Africa, lived for many years in Mauritius – where he opened the country’s first Italian deli – and came to Cape Town two years ago. The short and simple blackboard menus feature home-made pasta, a few veal dishes, a selection of antipasti and a brief, well-chosen wine list. “The secret is good ingredients,” says Enrico, and the beautiful mozzarella and creamy burrata reveal that he’s tracked down the best Italian artisan cheese maker in Cape Town. For authentic flavour, he says certain things must come from Italy, especially the prosciutto and the Illy coffee. We loved the signature pasta, the 4Ps (pappardelle, pancetta, porcini and peperoncino in a tomato-based sauce). Another hit was the ravioli

“There are amphorae and there are amphorae. You have to work with people who really understand terracotta,” says Matthew of the decision to import the 400L amphorae. For the maiden 2015 vintage, the winemakers selected a block of 34-year-old Chenin Blanc, one of the oldest Chenin vineyards in the Franschhoek valley. The grapes were de-stemmed by hand and sealed – along with a small portion of Muscat d’Alexandrie, and Viognier skins – in the amphorae to ferment naturally for seven months.

“You’ve got to have a lot of faith when making wine in amphorae,” says Matthew with a chuckle, adding that while Chardonnay responds best to the richness of oak barrels, “Chenin Blanc works really well in amphorae; there’s an interplay between the clay and the wine. And the amphora doesn’t impact on the flavour; it only brings structure and complexity.” And the proof is certainly in the bottle. The wine is brimming with freshness and aromatics, with citrus notes, a structured palate and plenty of perfume courtesy of the Viognier.

filled with spinach and ricotta, with a delicate but rich black truffle sauce. The veal meatballs were beautifully seasoned and baked with a tomato sauce and melted mozzarella. At lunchtime the restaurant is rustic, with bare repurposed pallet tables. Come evening, the fire is lit and tablecloths laid for a cosy and intimate atmosphere.

Stepbrothers

Stepbrothers Giono and Baz opened their vibey Italian bar and restaurant on the corner of Chiappini and Waterkant streets to share their love for good food. With a big screen TV and music playing, Stepbrothers has an upbeat feel reminiscent of neighbourhood bars in urban Italy. Food is a mix of traditional and contemporary, with classic home-made pasta from their grandmother’s recipes, fluffy ricotta and Parmesan gnocchi, big trays of pizza al taglio, meatballs, and steaks cooked on the braai in the back. “Food is awesome,” says Giono with a smile. “Our meat is really good; we specialise in steaks.” In true Italian tradition, the stepbrothers have gone for the best suppliers, including Richard Bosman, Ryan Boon and Puglia Cheese and, to finish off your meal in true Italian style, fabulous Moro Gelato.

manufactured, it did start my furniture design path. From there, I partnered with Whatiftheworld to start a design studio that supported emerging South African designers. Nowadays, it feels impossible to believe that 10 years ago when I started there were no young people making products for their own brands. It was all old, established furniture makers, so the idea of young people designing products and running their own businesses was very new to South Africa. In time, I slowly started designing interiors around my furniture and that's now the focus of my business.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I've lived and worked in the CBD for many years now and I love it. It's centrally located just off busy Bree Street, which is convenient as many of our clients spend their time in the area.

iam Mooney, product and interior designer, recently opened a showroom offering a constantly evolving collection of products, ranging from newly designed furniture to vintage finds, limited-edition collaborative items and products by exclusive international brands. Q: How did your business start? A: I studied industrial design and after college I had no interviews lined up. I’m more of an own boss kind of person, so decided to start my own thing. Haldane Martin was one of my lecturers at college and he passed on a commission to custom design some furniture for a house in Constantia. While the furniture wasn't ever

Q: How did you find your premises? A: One of my best friends owns the building, so when he said the space was coming available I jumped at it. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: First off, the building is incredibly beautiful and suits my needs perfectly. Second, the services that my business requires are nearby. Finally, the building’s location is central and convenient for almost every aspect of my business.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I would rather call them “improvement plans”. We'll be opening a small slow-brewed-coffee bar as well as putting more effort into design-related events in the store. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Our online catalogue is launching this month. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our own range of Liam Mooney Studio-designed furniture, which includes our Graves Sideboard and Rogers collection of tables.

Open-air living is just as much a part of the lifestyle as it is in Cape Town’s beach suburbs, but here morning walks, runs or mountain biking take you up beside a mountain stream in Newlands Forest, across the wide expanse of Rondebosch Common, or through one of the many family-friendly parks. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is another favourite playground. Living within their catchment areas is a huge advantage, which allows for the shortest of school runs or even kids being able to walk to school. “Our wonderful group of neighbours, all with young families like ourselves, makes it feel like we’re not isolated but can bring up our children in the community where they will learn and connect with the world and other people,” says Mary of their part of Newlands. “Great schools are around each corner and we don't have to travel far to manage our and our kids’ busy worlds.” Rondebosch has the UCT campus and there’s a vibrant student population in the area. You can enjoy quality

productions at the Baxter Theatre, a vibrant nightlife and casual cafes along the Rondebosch Main Road. The summer ritual of an Artscape Shakespeare production preceded by a picnic at the Maynardville Open Air Theatre in Wybnerg, and summer concerts and outdoor movies at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden are all easily accessible. You can't think of Claremont without picturing the trendy Cavendish Square mall. There's more to the area, however, with clothing boutiques and popular eateries such Limnos Bakers, Hudsons The Burger Joint and Tiger's Milk all within walking distance. By choosing the Southern Suburbs you're by no means turning your back on the city centre. Out of peak traffic, the CBD is a 10-minute drive away along De Waal Drive, with panoramic views over the city.
