e chat with Rob Lundie, CEO, Boschendal, about the vision of the farm.

Q: Where does the Boschendal story begin for you? A: In late 2012, new owners bought Boschendal. I came in as CEO in mid-2013. Boschendal was and is well known for its great wines, but we quickly appreciated the startling potential that the farm offered. We blended this with a new vision of the estate that will empower it to be a catalyst for real change in the Banhoek Valley. Q: What did you change? A: The rejuvenation of Boschendal included substantial investment in agriculture with a focus on building healthy soil and a

sustainable food system using biological farming principles. We also rejuvenated our hospitality offering with our restaurants and picnic menus being driven by a farm-to-table ethos. By adopting a holistic, all-inclusive approach, we have set about maximising the resources and opportunities of the farm through a wide variety of activities. Q: What’s the end goal? A: To become a sought-after producer of naturally produced food and great wine; a farm where our natural environment thrives and where our staff and communities prosper. Q: What are you most proud of with the local produce on the farm? A: Megan McCarthy heads up our

bio-friendly food garden and has quickly built up a strong following of locals who regularly buy fresh produce and attend her food growing workshops. I’m most proud of how our farmers, chefs and customers have embraced our farm-to-table ethos – so much so that we are now having to triple the size of our food garden to keep up with our hospitality needs and local customers. Aside from fresh garden produce, we now also have over 4,000 pasture-raised chickens and 950 pasture-raised Angus cattle, which means that much of the food we serve on Boschendal is ethically raised on the farm. Q: Boschendal is offering very unique workshop and lifestyle experiences. Did you ever think a yoga retreat would become part of the estate? A: Yes, a yoga retreat and other wellness programmes or workshops have been in our plans since the start. Aside from our agricultural focus on building healthy soil and wanting to produce healthy nutritious food, we see Boschendal as a special place for those who enjoy good food and wine, as well as those who enjoy a healthy, active and outdoor lifestyle. Q: What keeps you inspired? A: Building inspires me, particularly building a business and seeing positive change.

T

he opening of Foxcroft at the beginning of October was eagerly anticipated by Cape Town foodies. Dreamed up by La Colombe pastry chef Glen Foxcroft Williams in partnership with top chef Scot Kirton, and billing itself as an informal everyday eatery and bakery, who could resist?

Slotted into the row of cafes at High Constantia with plenty of parking and tables spilling out onto the pavement, the simple contemporary decor and friendly staff create a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. There is something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a three-course meal, tapas and a glass of wine, or just coffee and seriously indulgent patisserie in the adjoining bakery. For Glen it’s about exploring areas that he never could in fine dining. “It all started with wanting to open a bakery and then snowballed from there. I wanted to try the other side of baking that a fine dining pastry chef doesn’t get to do,” he says.

ith summer coming up, what better way is there to end the day than by enjoying a view of the city landscape from scenic heights with a cocktail in hand? We bring you the top three rooftop bars in the Cape Town CBD where you can indulge in some afterwork drinks. Ready to make your list?

Tjing Tjing

Tjing Tjing is known for its incredible cocktails. Join the creatives at this part attic, part rooftop bar, located in a 200-year-old heritage building. If you love a good, cold craft beer after a long day then look no further. Enjoy the sounds of electronica and indie music while taking in the views and tapas on offer.

“I’m also enjoying getting creative with the savoury hot food.” Most of his core team are former La Colombe staff, which has made for a smooth start. “We’re all on the same page with the same ethos and same spirit as La Colombe, but more casual and informal.” From the first beautifully plated tapas dish of squid with home-cured chorizo and wild garlic, it’s clear that there is careful attention to detail.

Tapas dishes arrive in groups according to intensity of flavour, so tuna tartare and tempura avo, with crunchy little gem leaves to scoop it all up, is followed by sticky Korean fried chicken wings, and deeply smoky pig’s head croquettes with spicy piccalilli and curried sultanas. Mains stand out for the masterly sauces and jus; the fermented plum sauce with the dry-aged duck breast had us mopping up every last drop. With Glen heading the kitchen, desserts are not to be missed. The subtle elderflower doughnuts with litchi ice cream, robust toffee gypsy tart, or the delicate prettiness of rose and coconut panna cotta are all delicious, as is the gorgeous cheeseboard. You can also choose an irresistible patisserie creation from the bakery. Foxcroft definitely demands more than one visit.

These luxury trailers were imported from the US and add a touch of American culture to the city scene. Make a night of it and book your seats at the Pink Flamingo Rooftop Cinema where you can sip on cocktails and watch the sun go down.

The Waiting Room

Looking for a place to experience upand-coming music acts in the Cape? Maybe you’re craving a delicious burger, or looking for a central spot with a rooftop view of the city. The Waiting Room offers all of this. With Royale Eatery just below, why not start off your Friday evening with one of the best burgers in the city, head up to The Waiting Room to check out some new musos and then end it off chatting with like-minded folk on the rooftop bar?

Buh-Rein Estate

MSP launches new apartments and duplex townhouses in award-winning Buh-Rein Estate. Great family homes in the ultimate modern neighbourhood

M

ulti Spectrum Property, MSP, has just relaunched its brand, and now, as well as award-winning developments, offers full-spectrum property solutions, including residential and commercial rentals, sales and advice. The 87ha Buh-Rein Estate is the brainchild of Riaan Roos, MD, MSP, and has received the South African Planning Institute award for the most innovatively designed lifestyle estate. We detail the last two developments to be launched in Buh-Rein Estate for 2016, which offer apartments and duplexes ready to move into. Roos tells us more.

RIAAN ROOS, MD

NEWSFLASH! ZEVENWACHT LIFESTYLE ESTATE MSP’s first retirement offering – with independent living apartments starting from R949,900, and luxurious single residential dwellings starting from R3m and going up to R5,3m – has been launched in a magnificent setting next to the prestigious Zevenwacht Wine Estate. Visit zevenwacht-lifestyle-estate.co.za for more.

“The heart of my vision for Buh-Rein Estate was to create a safe suburb that fulfils all the modern needs of any family. I also wanted to make it easier for people to acquire their own home. This is why MSP offers start-to-finish property services – from great property options where no deposit is required, 100% financing of loans and the management of letting a property,” says Roos. “Our two last releases in Buh-Rein Estate for this year are Langley Hills apartments and Sable Ridge duplexes, most of which are already built and ready to move into. In each case prices include all costs and no deposit is required, with 100% bonds available, for those who qualify, through our financial solutions arm, i-Fin. The next new properties in Buh-Rein Estate will

only be released early next year, by which time building costs will have increased due to building inflation.”

Langley Hills

Langley Hills is situated in a wellestablished part of Buh-Rein Estate, and is one of the last apartment developments within Phase 1. It features a contemporary design with 60 upmarket apartments varying in size from 65m² to 70m², with either two bedrooms and one bathroom, or two bedrooms and two bathrooms (main en suite). Langley Hills offers access control, high-speed broadband internet connectivity, spacious kitchen layouts with granite countertops and mosaic splashbacks, tiling throughout, built-in cupboards and a patio with a built-in braai. It overlooks and borders two individual open spaces or parks with playgrounds and jogging trails. The apartments are priced from R899,900. No deposit is required and up to 100% bonds are available. Families need a joint household income of R29,937/month and a clear credit profile to qualify. Expected rental income for these apartments is from R7,300 per month.

Sable Ridge

Sable Ridge is a small, intimate residential development within Buh-Rein Estate with 53 duplex townhouses. The townhouses range from 142m² with three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, study, indoor

braai with patio, kitchen, lounge, dining room and single garage, to 172m² with three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, study, indoor braai with patio, kitchen, lounge, dining room and double garage. Each dwelling is built on its own private plot. This development includes landscaped private open spaces with playgrounds for children. Prices vary from R1,549,900 to R2,149,900, with no deposit required and up to 100% bonds available. Families need a joint household income of R51,560 per month and a clear credit profile to qualify. Expected rental for these units is R13,000/month. There are around 3,000 people already living in Buh-Rein Estate, with 1,568 of the total of 3,299 properties already completed and another 320 currently under construction. The estate offers all the necessary amenities, including a conference centre, multi-purpose sports field, an outdoor gym with Boot Camp and Tag Rugby facilities, excellent security, broadband internet, and a planned Checkers shopping centre. Public transport services to and from the estate include Golden Arrow bus service as well as a private shuttle service by HG Travelling Services. Buh-Rein Estate offers a full range of lifestyle choices, but they all share in common great value for money, superb finishes, quality, security, technology and that well-deserved lifestyle. Buh-Rein Estate really is the neighbourhood of neighbourhoods.

Assistance from the Cape Town Fashion Council and Cape Craft and Design Institute enabled me to learn the skills to design and make my fashion items for the retail environment. My selection to the Small Business Academy programme has been an incredible opportunity for me to learn about areas of running a business I have never thought of. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: We were operating from another market not far from where we are now, but there was a network problem meaning our customers couldn’t reach us during office hours.

They recently exhibited at the Design Indaba through the Small Enterprise Development Agency, securing an international client. Thuleka was also selected to participate in the Small Business Academy of the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB), which aims to support and strengthen small businesses in the townships. Q: How did your business start? A: I travelled quite extensively in West Africa and the countries there inspired our African print handbags and clothing. We raised money so my business partner, Abass Maazu, could go to a college in Ghana to

Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: The rentals can be anything from R5,000 per month.

Q: How did you find your premises? A: Fortunately for us there was a vacant space here in the Pan African Market. We jumped at the opportunity because we needed to move urgently, although it meant having to pay rent in advance to secure the place and give notice at the previous one. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: We chose town because it’s central and has lots of tourists coming in every day. There are tourist buses dropping people off every 15 minutes. Those people end up coming into our shop as we are opposite the bus stop.

Q: What is your shop footprint? A: With the tourist buses stopping by, on average about 80 people per day. Considering that we are on the second floor and people still come all the way up to our store, we can see we are doing something right with our product. And we hear stories about referrals from friends that visited South Africa. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We are planning to open a skills centre to teach young people how to make bags. By so doing, they can at least work for themselves and create employment if they can’t find jobs. We have a goal of selling our products in leading boutiques countrywide and putting African designs at the forefront of international fashion. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Our website is still under construction, but we will definitely be selling online soon. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our ostrich mixed with Kente fabric clutch bags are the most popular; people keep coming back for more.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Our neighbours sell paintings, sculptures, crockery, clothing, fabrics and jewellery.

B

uilt around its wide bay and picturesque fishing harbour, separated from the rest of Cape Town by a dramatic embrace of wild mountains, Hout Bay is a vibrant community with its own identity, independent of the bigger city and yet still part of it. It offers all the essential shops and services, plenty of restaurants and cafes, vibey Bay Harbour Market which tempts Capetonians over Constantia Nek on Friday nights and weekends, and Mariner’s Wharf which is a Cape Town institution for fish and chips.

safe during daylight hours. There’s so much to appreciate: the sun rising over the mountains, colourful fishing boats chugging off to sea, sleek cormorants diving in the waves, and all the surprises the sea washes up.”

For many, it’s the natural beauty of the valley that is the main attraction. There are still areas of wilderness with abundant wildlife, from wild cats, to tortoises, dolphins and seals in the bay. “I walk on this magnificent sweep of sand and sea several times a week, and it’s always a joy,” says resident Jane-Anne Hobbs. “The beach is well maintained and perfectly

There are a wealth of community initiatives – from the local schools’ annual eisteddfod, to the NGOs and individuals working to unite and support the poorer parts of the community such as local township Imizamo Yethu. The diversity is part of Hout Bay’s appeal for many. As another resident says, “It’s an incredible bay with lots of heart!”

THINGS TO DO: • Visit Mariner’s Wharf for a quintessential seaside atmosphere. • Visit Bay Harbour Market, a vibey weekend market with live music. • Hike the many mountain trails. • Visit World of Birds with the kids. • Buy recycled art greeting cards from Original T Bag Designs. • Paint your own ceramics at the Clay Cafe.

The mountains around Hout Bay are another beautiful natural resource that residents appreciate. “There are deep forested kloofs and waterfalls just 30 to 40 minutes’ walk away from a tar road,” says Jane-Anne, “and you will be astonished at how pristine and remote these wild places are.”

I’ve lived with my family in Hout Bay for almost seven years now, and yet I still feel like rubbing my eyes in disbelief when I step out on our balcony every morning. To live in a cradle of wild mountains so close to the sea – and just 25 minutes’ drive from a buzzing city – makes me feel like I’m on a permanent holiday.

JANE-ANNE HOBBS, RESIDENT

Agent commentary Q: What attracts buyers to the area? A: Hout Bay truly caters for a plethora of lifestyle tastes. When you think Hout Bay, think exciting and laid-back, a lot of flavour and a touch of rural, breathtaking scenery, sea, surf, rivers and mountains, good soil and temperate climates. Fine dining and wining, fishing on the rocks, night-time BMXing, township dance and home-grown music projects with reach as far as New York, are all among the perks. According to the latest stats, Hout Bay is safer than its neighbouring suburbs thanks to local security firms and community initiatives such as Community Crime Prevention. Buyers have smartened up to just how undervalued Hout Bay is compared to its immediate neighbours.

Q: What types of homes are available and what can buyers expect to pay? A: Hout Bay is a unique suburb with residents having a strong community spirit, and the village atmosphere attracting local and international residents. It offers accommodation to meet all requirements, with apartments selling from R1,2m, residential homes from R2m, estate living from R5m, and country estates from around R8m upwards. Prospective buyers are sure to find a home that meets their needs. Hout Bay is extremely attractive to young families due to the excellent pre-primary and primary schools and the relaxed family-orientated lifestyle. There are several security estates which are extremely popular and offer secure and easy living for families.

Q: How has the area changed over the past five years? A: Hout Bay was once a sleepy harbour village but today is an incredibly vibrant place with the most beautiful surroundings, mountain views and walks, sea vistas and a lovely beach and harbour. It has grown immeasurably over the last few years, appealing to all age groups – from young couples with children, older families, retired couples and holiday homeowners. Today Hout Bay offers a diverse range of homes, from sea-facing villas and apartments to security estates and large smallholdings in the valley. The infrastructure is fabulous with a variety of schools including the newly built Hout Bay International School, supermarkets, all major banks, independent retailers and restaurants.
