Taking responsibility for our health

O

ctober, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, helps to increase attention and support, early detection and treatment, as well as palliative care of this disease. According to the Cancer Association of South Africa, one in 29 women in South Africa has a lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Although it predominantly affects women, it can also affect men. Breast cancer, like other types of cancers, is treatable when detected early, which is why breast self-examination is so important and to go for a mammogram every year. At the end of the day, your health and well-being need to be your top priority.

erroir – the interplay of climate, topography and geography – is the starting point for many great winemakers, each ensuring their wine shows a distinct sense of place. And the new premium range from acclaimed winery Durbanville Hills offers double the terroir, with seven wines showcasing the unique terroir of these coastal vineyards while paying tribute to iconic sights, sounds and scenes of Cape Town. “Durbanville Hills commissioned a vibrant Capetonian artist – Theo Vorster – to pair each wine with a prominent landmark in Cape Town, most of which are visible from the winery,” explains Martin Moore, cellar master, Durbanville Hills.

Theo is known for his eye-catching linocut works full of energy and vibrant colour, and the result is a memorable new range that impresses in the glass and makes a fine talking point at the table. Durbanville is famed for its Sauvignon Blanc, so it’s fitting that The Cape Mist Sauvignon Blanc pays tribute to the cool terroir of these sea-facing vineyards. The Company’s Garden, where Chenin would have been planted in the early days of the Cape colony, inspires the Cape Garden Chenin Blanc. The Cableway Chardonnay is a particular standout. Partly barrelfermented, it’s a perfect balance between textured palate and vibrant fruit. The trio of whites is complemented by four reds, with The High Noon Shiraz

certainly one to add to the wine rack. Paying homage to the Noon Gun, this wine spent more than a year in oak barrels – expect firm tannins, ripe fruit and a delicious spiciness. The soft fruit and gentle tannins of The Lighthouse Merlot are more understated, certainly not as intrusive as the ‘Moaning Minnie’ Mouille Point lighthouse it was named after. The historic Castle of Good Hope was a fitting foil for the King of the Grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, while The Promenade Pinotage is a reminder that some things are best enjoyed at a more leisurely pace. That’s certainly the case with this delicious Pinotage (a mere 12% alcohol, too) that will linger long on the palate, if not in your glass.

Spring fresh Chef Eric Bulpitt brings a fresh interpretation to Pierneef à La Motte’s heritage cuisine WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

H

eritage has always been a strong theme at La Motte, from the elegant decor of the restaurant dedicated to landscape artist Pierneef, to the celebration of Winelands cuisine and local ingredients. Having taken over the kitchen in May, chef Eric Bulpitt continues that sense of tradition and brings his own fresh and approachable interpretation to the table. Lunches are now the focus (Pierneef is no longer open for dinner). The short à la carte menu has a set price for two or three courses, plus a “blackboard” page of seasonal specials changing each week; or, if you want an impromptu snack between wine-tastings, a garden menu is served on the stoep or on long tables under the tall oak trees, where there is space for kids to play.

There are already cheese and charcuterie boards available, and a new tapas menu is in the works for October.

roast cauliflower too, supported by a rich barley ragout, barley crisp and lightened by rosemary cream.

Lunch begins with a luscious bread service – crispy flatbread and homemade bread sticks, dipped into a light anchovy espuma, creamy beef and pork tallow or blue cheese spread. Eric has always been brilliant at expressing the essence of humble vegetables in ways that make you see them in a new light – fine cuisine without superfluous frills – and we are delighted with the fresh flavours: a slow-roasted carrot starter, light and beautifully presented, a hint of black garlic deepening the clear carrot juice poured over at the table. More substantial and equally delicious was the smoky, grilled sea bass and artichokes in barigoule, hidden under a savoury cloud of foam. We couldn’t resist tasting the sumptuous

The mains were generous portions served with a salad and side of potato purée: my spring lamb sous-vide was tender and pink, served with whole baby turnips, leaf and all, fresh pea purée, mint and whey jus, perfect for the turn of the seasons. The chargrilled pork loin was paired with gorgeously earthy fire-roasted cabbage and heaps of zesty mustard greens. Do leave space for dessert. We shared a wonderful passion fruit entremets – exquisite concoctions of passion fruit puree between a light sponge cake and creamy white chocolate mousse, with coconut ice cream and coconut shards. Spring fresh, unusual and intensely satisfying.

Say cheese Celebrating local cheeses at an accessible family-friendly festival WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

T

here’s a family feel to the Say Cheese Festival, which is being held for its third year at the Italian Club in Milnerton on 6 and 7 October. It’s small and intimate, focussing on local artisan cheesemakers with about 40 stands, including a sprinkling of bakers, brewers and winemakers, so that you get a chance to chat to the cheesemakers themselves, taste, hear their stories and learn about the different cheeses. The festival was dreamed up by cheesemaker and restauranteur Miki Ciman, who started making cheese herself many years ago, bringing the traditions of her native Italy to a South Africa that back then only knew cheddar and Gouda. Now her daughter Kiki Ciman-Frauenknecht continues her legacy, running La Bottega deli at the Italian Club, and organising the annual festival together with Elize Nel. The South African cheese industry has come a long way in the last two decades and the festival celebrates the growing diversity of cheeses made here. “We’re letting people know that you don’t have to go to France to get good Brie, and putting the public in touch with local producers,” says Elize. “Many of our exhibitors are small producers

who rarely travel outside their areas to market their cheese. It’s going to be a cheese-lover’s paradise,” adds Kiki. At a pre-event lunch, we tasted a series of delicious cheese-focussed dishes: pizza with Dalewood Brie and prosciutto, another with Fairview goats’ cheese and beetroot – the pizzas at the Italian Club are the real deal, too! A cauliflower and blue cheese soup and a butternut risotto with oaksmoked Stanford from Klein River, both showed off the complexities of the cheeses to perfection, and the finale of caramelised roast pears topped with luscious melting Camembert was a decadent cheese lover’s dream. At the festival, a cooking demo area manned by cheese-inspired foodies and chefs will demonstrate innovative ways with cheese, and guided wine, beer and cheese pairings. There are kids’ activities too, but more than anything visitors are encouraged to indulge themselves: meet the makers, then put together a relaxed picnic of their favourite cheeses, breads, beers and wines, and enjoy it in the grass courtyard while listening to live music. Tickets are available from Webtickets (bit.ly/2PONYYD) and kids under 12 go free.

My business neighbourhood Contemporary urban design at MotherCityHardware’s new showroom in the East City WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

IMAGES: SUPPLIED

K

nown for their stylish functional furniture with a slick urban feel, MotherCityHardware recently won Best Product Design for their modular kitchen island at 100% Design South Africa 2018. Founder Marco Simal tells us about their new showroom space in the East City. Q: How did your business start? A: The business started three years ago. A client requested an industrial-style storage solution and

after developing the original item, we decided to explore the possibility of creating a range. Unbeknown to us, there was a greater demand for this type of product than we had anticipated, so we decided to formalise the offering and created MotherCityHardware. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up? A: We recently launched a co-working space called Tiny Empire in the East City, so we were aware of the changes going on in the neighbourhood, which seemed very promising. We decided to test the waters with a showroom within Tiny Empire to see how people would respond. Q: How did you find your premises? A: The showroom was part of our original scheme when developing Tiny Empire. We found the site for that when my business partner, Justin Rhodes, heard that it was going on auction. The site was in a bad state. We spent a year renovating the building as well as reinstating the facade of the building to its original design from over 100 years ago. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The large street-facing shopfront onto a busy road was a big drawcard, as well as the unique double-volume space.

Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: T he rental prices in the area are still competitive. It’s still up and coming, so prices aren’t restrictive, but as footfall increases, I presume this will change. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: It’s hard to say. During the week the majority of visitors are tourists who are exploring the neighbourhood, the rest are customers coming with the intention of visiting us. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We don’t have any at this point – we feel strongly that online works well for us and will be launching our e-commerce platform soon. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: You can view our products and order online at mothercityhardware.com. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our mini-lockers are a firm favourite at the moment. We hope in time that our awardwinning kitchen island, will become a popular solution for new homeowners.

SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Swan Cafe and Truth Coffee are across the road from us, and as part of Tiny Empire, we have our own Deluxe Coffee Works in the building.

Rosebank Link to be completed soon

T

he 15-storey steel-and-glass Rosebank Link at 173 Oxford Road in Joburg is on track for project completion by end October. This is one of the last remaining ongoing projects in the R7bn facelift of the Rosebank precinct. Recent projects have included Rosebank Towers and the Rosebank Firestation, and additional work at the Rosebank Galleria and The Mews. Paragon’s scope of work at Rosebank Link focused on the design and documentation of all five stages of the project. The building has a total rentable area of 18,744m2 of office area and 1,553m2 of ground floor retail space. There are two basement parking levels, a ground floor public and retail level, five parkade levels, and nine

storeys of offices from the podium level. “As a building standing foremost in the centre of a developing cosmopolitan area, it was important to have a unique design that served the needs of the client and its neighbours, as well as the public, in new, exciting, and smart ways,” Paragon senior project architectural technologist Warren Wesson comments. At the heart of the building is a multistorey enclosed, north-facing atrium, fashioned to capture the sunlight filtering down into a unique fluid underbelly of the ground-floor thoroughfare. This creates a conduit for a combination of green walls and indigenous planting brought to life in executive roof gardens, podium-level gardens, and parkade-wall gardens that result in a tranquil oasis within the bustling Rosebank precinct.

Declutter your home and your head The thought of decluttering is often overwhelming. It’s not simply about throwing out… it’s about associations with those items. WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK

There has been no indication that expropriation will affect ordinary residential property. President Cyril Ramaphosa is on record as stating that the intention is to unlock the economic potential by looking at unused land, derelict buildings, purely speculative land holdings, or circumstances where occupiers have strong historical rights and title holders do not occupy or use their land, such as labour tenancy, informal settlements and abandoned inner-city buildings. STUART MANNING, CEO, SEEFF GROUP

Umgeni welcomes new commercial space

P

hase A of the construction of the R1,4bn Umgeni Lifestyle and Deco Park in Durban, is expected to be completed as soon as October this year with the grand opening on 1 November. Conceptualised by Eris Property Group, in partnership with Prasa and Intersite Asset Investments, this commercial concept is a first of its kind for this region. “When you drive along the Springfield and Umgeni industrial areas, there’s a significant amount of clutter with haphazard businesses competing against each other. The Umgeni Lifestyle and Deco Park is a unique concept that aims to formalise the vibrant node, offering high-spec infrastructure, management association, a ‘green’ environment, and a comprehensive framework of complementary services which allows it to stand out from the crowd. We are proud to bring this

exceptional opportunity to KwaZuluNatal and pioneer a commercial property offering of international standards,” shares Stephen Lawson, developer manager, Eris Property Group. “With the first phase of infrastructure nearing completion, we are looking forward to handing over the first site to Zebbies Lighting in November, followed by CTM early next year. Businesses that offer anything from home improvement products and appliances, building supplies, furniture, flooring and blinds, to outdoor lifestyle products, call centres, offices and motor vehicle dealerships, will find this space beneficial. This park will allow businesses to lease a facility designed in accordance with their specifications and will provide them with the much-needed space to house their showroom, office and distribution within one site,” Lawson further explains.

C

ape Town based James Smal, creator and owner, Sorted, says, “Clutter is anything unfinished, unused, unresolved or disorganised. When you clear your clutter, you create space for new things, and your energy and creativity will increase.” Hard to argue. Heidi Meyer, CEO, Cloud 9 organised, adds that you shouldn’t have anything in your life you don’t need or love. “If any items evoke feelings of sadness, regret or pain – remind you of times you’d rather forget – let them go. Do you want more space? Are there things which hold you back? If you don’t know why you are doing it, your decluttering efforts won’t last.” She adds, “By thinning your belongings, you will actually use a greater variety of your things.”

Micro-living comes to CT

James says, “We all carry too much stuff with us, whether mental or physical. We only need what we touch, love, use and the things that spark joy! The more you declutter, the lighter you feel and the more space there is for new opportunities in your life.”

onstruction of Cape Town’s first micro-living apartments has begun at 1 Albert Road in Woodstock. Once completed, the apartments, which were designed by architects Louis Karol and the interiors designed by Grant Gillis, will range in size from entry-level 21m2 studios, at a cost of R1,095m, to 75m2 two-bedroom units, at a cost of up to R2,65m. All the apartments will contain features such as Smeg appliances, flat screen smart TVs and uncapped, unshaped, 100megs-per-second fibre internet.

James has five tips:

C

a food court, laundromat, heated swimming pool and more – all part of a new conceptual design in living known as integrated living solutions.

The development will also feature communal recreational spaces, shops,

Rob Stefanutto, group managing director, Dogon Group Properties, explains that micro-living units have been popular internationally for several years and Cape Town is now embracing this trend in. “Cape Town is following the trend seen in cities such as Berlin, London, New York, Barcelona and Paris with the development of these state-ofthe-art, micro-living apartments – the first of its kind in the city.” 1 On Albert is expected to be completed by April 2020.

1

Dedicate time to declutter

Set aside a day, put your cellphone and laptop away, and outsource the children so you can focus. Starting feels like a mountain, but when you focus, you’ll get a lot done and it’ll be much easier than you thought.

2Where to start?

Establish where you spend most of your time and begin there. Make this a tranquil, safe space to be in. Don’t be overwhelmed. End that first day knowing you can go into a relaxed space, rested, for the next day’s decluttering.

the ‘Not for 3 Create this room’ box

This box is vital. If you find something that doesn’t belong in the space, box it. Don’t leave that space to put it away elsewhere – you’ll become distracted by something in the other room and lose focus. That’s guaranteed to bring back the feeling of that big mountain on your shoulders.

Make categories 4and start with a blank canvas

Before you begin to unpack, write down categories: donate, recycle, gift, sell, trash, to fix or do, and to keep. Have a box or recycling bag ready for each category, so when full, close it and remove it from the room, ready for the next empty box or bag. Pack your items into the categories. Group similar items together within the “to keep” pile, for example, glassware. Remove everything from the cupboard so when you repack and organise, you have a blank canvas to create the picture you want to see at the end.

Items we touch, 5love, use and stuff that sparks joy!

When you unpack an item you want to keep, pause, ask yourself: “Do I regularly touch or use this item?” For sentimental items: “Do I absolutely love this item and does it spark lots of joy when I look at it?” If it’s a no, it must go. When you are left with stuff you touch, love, and use, paint your picture by packing back the items in such a way that they’re visible and user-friendly.

Suburb focus

Hout Bay Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: NATASHA LASSEN, SUPPLIED & GOOGLE MAPS *Map not to scale

Hout Bay is as diverse as you could wish for – almost a microcosm of all South African issues rolled into one. Sure, there’s crime, as with any suburb in Cape Town, but we have an amazingly active community and security framework that helps not just on fighting crime, but working on community building as well. MARK PEDDLE, RESIDENT

W

ith its sheltered bay and harbour, backed by a wide green valley encircled by mountain peaks, Hout Bay is less a suburb of Cape Town than a town and territory in its own right, hence its affectionate nickname, The Republic of Hout Bay. Once a quiet seaside fishing village insulated from the bustle of the city, it has grown considerably over the last two decades, adding suburban developments, luxury gated estates and the township Imizamo Yethu, but it retains its strong sense of community and identity.

DUNES RESTAURANT

“What I love about Hout Bay is that any time you go shopping, you’ll meet at least three people you know, it’s like a village,” says one long-term resident. “It’s got a very real feel,” adds another, “it’s part of Africa, from the street stalls at the traffic circle, to the big soccer field where kids from all different parts of the community play together.” While some residents miss the days of it being a secluded seaside village, Hout Bay is gaining a new generation of residents, attracted by the relative affordability, proximity to the beach, and the space of the valley. “Hout Bay is not a bolt hole, it’s a community that is engaging and working hard to build a better area for all,” says Mark Peddle, who moved here three years ago.

Property

Hout Bay spans a wide variety of property – from family homes with gardens, to almost rural smallholdings and forest retreats spreading up the valley. There are retirement villages, apartments, gated country estates and almost everywhere you look, superb mountain views provide a scenic backdrop. The valley feels separate from Cape Town, but it’s only a short hop over Constantia Nek to the Southern Suburbs, or along the coastline to Llandudno, Camps Bay and the rest of the Atlantic Seaboard. “We moved away from the city bowl as we wanted more space and a garden area for our children,” says Mark. “Although there was input from friends regarding safety issues in Hout Bay, we felt the positives outweighed the negatives. And we knew we wanted to be close to a beach, so it was the most affordable option.”

Schooling

“Schools span the width of the education spectrum – from Waldorf through to government and international schools. It really depends on budget, schooling direction, and philosophy,” says Mark. There is a good

selection of creches and day care too. “There are many young families,” he adds, “all with a great attitude about inclusivity and positivity.” The Hout Bay primary schools feed directly into the Southern Suburb schools in Wynberg, Claremont and Newlands. And the MyCiti bus connects older kids easily with Camps Bay High School.

Explore

“Friday night at the Bay Harbour Market has a great vibe with live music and loads of good food stalls,” says one resident who regularly gets together with friends there. On Sundays the long-established Lions Club craft market on the common is another regular social gathering point, raising funds for community upliftment. Other kid-friendly venues are dotted all over, including Valley Farm, Clay Cafe, and World of Birds, the largest bird park in Africa, currently fund-raising to stay open and continue its work as a wildlife sanctuary. Then there are riding schools, sports facilities, beach activities, SUP, surfing and mountain walks for a busy open-air lifestyle. You can go zip-lining through the canopy with SA Forest Adventures, or explore the forest in an aerial obstacle course with Acrobranch Constantia. The wine farms spilling over Constantia Nek add a layer of sophistication to the food offering, including iconic restaurant La Colombe at Silvermist, and within the town itself you have a wideranging selection of eateries – from fish and chips at Mariners Wharf or Fish on the Rocks, through Italian, Portuguese, and Thai, to Asian fusion at Cheynes. Hout Bay really does have everything on its doorstep.
