Editor’s Exclusive CLAIRE BARNARDO

I

must admit that this year started off a little too gloomy for my liking – the rand is weaker, there are murmurs of a recession, and we’re experiencing a severe drought. It points one way – maybe 2016 is the year when we must all pull together as communities. While I was listening to a radio news report this week, I was delighted to hear of the extent to which this is already happening through Operation Hydrate. The operation, started by a group of volunteers who deliver water to drought-stricken areas, is testament to what can be achieved when people work together. Driven mainly through instant messaging, they aim to deliver 1,5m litres of drinking water to affected areas. This is proof that every little bit helps. How will you make your mark this year?

f the words “weekly shopping” fill you with dread, maybe it’s time to join the regulars at Oranjezicht City Farm market and turn the chore into a pleasure. You can fill baskets with locally grown produce, herbs and flowers, chat to farmers, butchers and bakers about their goods, and meet friends for coffee and delicious lunches on benches and straw bales overlooking the harbour, with a fresh sea breeze easing the summer heat. On Saturday mornings it’s a mecca for locals who want real food that is close to its origins. This is “slow food” shopping at its most enjoyable. Take time selecting your purchases and get the whole story behind the bacon or beetroot, cheeses, honey, and artisanal bread, directly from the person who made them.

The market is so much more than an eco-chic foodie destination, though it certainly has become that too. It’s about being part of a community, about knowing exactly where your food comes from, and investing in a future where small farmers and artisan producers have a valued place in our daily lives.

Songwriters’ Showcase 021 426 1400 thehouseofmachines.com PUBLISHED BY THE CREATIVE GROUP

As you’d expect from a market that was started to support the eponymous urban farm in Oranjezicht, the centrepiece is a whole tent devoted to fresh produce, piled high in decorative abundance. You won’t find organic certification too complicated and costly for small farmers to achieve, but what you will find is the personal connection. Sheryl Ozinsky, the powerhouse behind the market, works with 20 small farmers, besides the market itself, who all grow sustainably and without pesticides. “We collect directly from them each week, meet them and chat. And we buy everything that they can grow, whatever is in season, so that they can focus on farming.” For her it’s a mission from the ground up to make healthy, fresh vegetables available to more city dwellers and to support and encourage small urban farmers. Suppliers include a Green Point creche that grows vegetables to feed the children, selling the surplus to the market to finance the programme.

Visit Oranjezicht City Farm on the first Wednesday of each month to pick your own harvest, and feel free to visit at other times to wander through the delightful paths between beds of vegetables and edible flowers. There’s a weekly vegetable box scheme in partnership with Harvest of Hope collected from the farm.

The art of the Wine cocktail

without the vines

Forget about looking for the gabled manor house and sprawling vineyards, the winemakers behind these three secret cellars are crafting superb wines without a patch of soil to call their own WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

T

here’s a cliche in the winelands of the sprawling estate and tree-lined driveway, acres of manicured vines carpeting the hillsides, and a gleaming tasting room to welcome visitors. There’s no shortage of those, and many produce world-class wines, but some of the most interesting wines on the shelf of your local wine boutique may not have a home to call their own. Buying in grapes from farms across the Western Cape, these so-called négociant winemakers are able to cherry-pick the vineyards that express just the right terroir, and allow established winemakers to dabble in interesting blends. Duncan Savage is a perfect example of this. A member of the esteemed Cape Winemakers Guild and cellarmaster at Cape Point Vineyards, Duncan has sought out superb older vineyards to craft a small range of limited-release wines under his own Savage Wines label. His blends are the ones to look for – particularly Follow The Line, which marries Cinsaut, Grenache and Syrah from Piekenierskloof and

Darling vineyards into a full-bodied yet silky blend that’ll keep for at least a decade. The barrel-fermented white blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon from Villiersdorp is also a stunner.

H

idden away on Shortmarket Street you’ll find Cape Town’s latest cool-kid spot, Outrage of Modesty (OoM). Having only launched in December, it has firmly established itself as the place to be seen. So what makes OoM so popular? Well, the guys behind it know a thing or two about cool. That’s because it is brought to you by Alliance Brands, the brains behind House of Machines located conveniently right next-door. The cocktail menu is conceptualised by Luke “The Wookie” Whearty from renowned bar Operation Dagger in Singapore. The focus of the cocktail bar is on the experience and taste, which is why you won’t find any branding in the joint. As explained by barman Devin Cross who heads up the

Trizanne Barnard is also adept at these two varieties, sourcing the white wine grapes for her Trizanne Signature Wines from cool-climate vineyards near Elim. The elegant SauvignonSemillon and Syrah-Grenache blends in her TSW range offer good value, but also look out for the Reserve Syrah. Grapes were sourced from three separate Elim vineyards to showcase just what cool-climate Syrah can offer. At Fram Wines – named for the ship that took explorer Roald Amundsen to claim the South Pole in 1911 – winemaker Thinus Krüger is similarly embracing the spirit of exploration. Grapes are sourced from vineyards across the Western Cape, each parcel chosen for its specific terroir. For the Chenin Blanc, the mountain vineyards near Clanwilliam means fresh acidity and complexity thanks to the sandy soils and altitude, while the calcium-rich soils of Robertson give his unwooded Chardonnay a delicious minerality. Shiraz, from selected Swartland vineyards, is also worth a taste.

Outrage of Modesty will redefine the way you see the cocktail

bar in Luke’s stead, “People have been dictated to what is good and what they should drink. People need to have an open mind, which is what we’re all about.” First up is an amuse-bouche of watermelon compressed with sweet vermouth and rooibos, with added sea salt and wild buchu – a nice treat to awaken the taste buds before I jump into the cocktails. Devin whips up the moreish Caperitif, made from locally produced Caperitif Vermouth (which has incredible fynbos flavours that shine through), naartjie and honey topped with soda and some buchu garnish. It’s perfect for the summer heat. Next I try out the Shampanje (apricot, vanilla, pear and poppy), which is made beforehand and bottled in adorable mini-bottles. Before I head off Devin gives me a sample of the Chocberry Pinotage, a Pinotage with compressed berries and raw cocoa, which is strangely comforting and surprising. So what’s my verdict? I’m a little obsessed. I love the whole redefining of how we see cocktails and that everything is prepped beforehand so there are no long waits. “We need to change our perception of what a cocktail is and what a cocktail looks like. There is more to life than a mojito,” says Devin. Don’t worry, though, if they have the ingredients they’ll make it for you, but with their own spin on it.

TASTE FOR YOURSELF:

Expect OoM to change with the seasons. Every three months the cocktail menus, and what they are printed on, are changed – at the moment the menus are printed on stunning wood blocks. Even the barmen’s aprons and the back mural are changed. That way the establishment stays fresh and always surprises you.

Go slow WORDS: CHRIS REID

IMAGE: THE COFFEE REGISTRY

T

he slow movement has been an influence in food for many years, as the proliferation of markets around the country is testament to. By encouraging people to take their time and focus on the process behind what they do, the proponents of the movement say they’ll better appreciate the outcome. What many do not realise, however, is that this same approach can also be seen in the way people experience their homes. In the home we’re seeing people rejecting the idea of decorating a space all at once, but rather starting minimally and gathering possessions over years. It’s not a financial matter, but rather about mindfully surrounding yourself with things you truly love. Living slow is also about a certain meditativeness, and creating rituals that help to ground and centre you. It’s this spirit that has seen people reject appliances like espresso machines in favour of slower but more artisanal methods like the hipster favourite – the pour over. Locally, we’re also seeing this trend go beyond individual homes –South Africa already has its first slow town. Sedgefield on the Garden Route has been certified by the global slow town organisation Cittaslow since 2010. While the principles of slow living may be difficult to take up wholesale, its appeal is easy to understand. And while everyone can’t live in a slow town, it is creating small moments of slowness that matters in modern life.

The aim is to develop a research alliance between UCT, industry and communities, to collaborate with public and private sector partners, thereby ensuring a community- and industry-

A friend of ours has a cafe here and put us in touch with the centre manager, so when the space became free, we were first on the list.

Q: How did your business start? A: Ever since we relocated from Joburg we were looking for our own business to run. A surf shop seemed like the perfect business for Melkbosstrand, so when we heard it was up for sale, we bought it and took over the stock from the previous owner. It was then located in a shop just off 6th Avenue with not much passing traffic. So after just two months trading there we moved here.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: With Pick n Pay as the anchor tenant in the centre there is always passing foot traffic. Business tends to be slower in winter and that passing trade makes all the difference.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We chose Melkbosstrand for the lifestyle. It’s a lovely community, ideal for a family with young children. This is the only surf shop in a place that really is surf central.

Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: It depends on size. It is more per square meter than the previous premises, but the position makes it worth it. It’s reasonable.

Q: How did you find your premises? A: When we bought the business, Steers

he Department of Construction Economics and Management at UCT has partnered with Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking (NCIB) to form the UCT-Nedbank Urban Real Estate Research Unit. The unit will develop an interdisciplinary research platform to identify issues and solutions to urban real estate investment, finance, economics and management problems in Africa.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: There’s a Spec-Savers, a pet shop, an art gallery and deli, Steers next-door and, of course, Pick n Pay itself.

Q: What is your shop footprint? A: A lot of people come to the door and just stand there browsing,

but actual customers, 10 to 30 per day year round, going up to about 100 in summer. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, I’d love to have three times the space, but there’s nothing else available in the centre right now. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We’re launching a website with an online shopping function ality this year. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Surf wax. Everyone needs it!

This is according to Carol Reynolds, area principal, Pam Golding Properties Durban Coastal, who says the property market in this growth node is buoyant, driven by huge demand from local buyers and up-country investors. “The market is seeking security, convenience and lifestyle, and this is exactly what developers in Umhlanga

and Sibaya are delivering. Pam Golding Properties is currently marketing five developments in this area.” Pam Golding Properties has released a development in Bellamont Road in Umdloti, comprising four luxury homes in a private enclave. Reynolds says, “Position is everything in real estate, and a secure luxury development with top-quality finishes in a prime address with panoramic sea views, is always a safe investment.” The new development – called 90a Bellamont – consists of four 500m2 villas, priced at R12,4m. Two have already been sold.

Grade ll listed London house rent: pay what you can

London man is offering to rent two rooms in his Grade ll listed house between Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market for as much as his “perfect tenants” can afford. The landlord, Rupert Hunt, posted his ad on spareroom.com, the site he founded. If you want to rent the house, however, you have to be willing to be filmed for his YouTube channel. He says on the Spareroom advert: “I’ve decided to film my journey to show people the process, and to spread the word that living with the right people beats living

alone.” This hasn’t put people off – he’s had more than 3,000 enquiries. Hunt wrote on his Spareroom page: “I’m offering the rooms on a ‘pay what you can afford’ basis. I’m far more interested in finding the right people to share with, than maximising my rent (and market rent round here would price some people out). So if you’re my perfect flatmate and happen to be volunteering and can only afford £100 (about R2,350) per month, I’d sooner take you over someone who can pay full whack, but who isn’t quite right.”

The poor rand W

ith the rand at its current levels, it’s hard to remember that just five years ago one dollar would cost you less than R7. Since around the middle of 2011, however, the rand has been on a oneway slide against the US currency. Unfortunately the consensus is that this trend is likely to continue. Most analysts believe that South Africa is heading for a credit rating downgrade from at least one of the major international ratings agencies this year, and together with higher US interest rates, persistently low commodity prices, and concerns over China’s growth, there is apparently little in

the rand’s favour. Some forecasters are even saying that the rand will hit R20 to the dollar before the end of the year. Many South Africans are responding to this currency weakness and concerns about the local economy by moving more money offshore. This has become an apparently simple choice. With the rand falling, international assets are going up in local currency terms, and so all one has to do to make money, is turn it into dollars and watch. However, it is always important for anyone investing for the long term to be careful about making decisions based on short-term market movements.

In much the same way that we use New Year’s resolutions to improve ourselves, we should also resolve to improve our homes. Whether it’s through renovating, redecorating, greening or better financial management, make 2016 the year you add value to your home

If investors are taking money offshore at R17 to the dollar, they have to be confident that, in the long term, that is at least a fair price to pay for US currency, and preferably it should be a price at which dollars are cheap. And one has to look past the shortterm negative prospects for the rand to make that decision. It’s very difficult to judge exactly where a currency is trading at “fair value”, but there is a reasonably widespread belief that right now the rand is undervalued. In other words, if you are using local currency to buy dollars now, you may be paying too much.

NEWS & LIFESTYLE

9

Analyse it PATRICK CAIRNS

That doesn’t mean that the rand is definitely going to come back to a more “reasonable” level any time soon. Market sentiment is currently against emerging market currencies, and the rand is not suddenly going to regain its sparkle. However, investors should act with caution when taking money offshore. International diversification is important, and has become even more important, but don’t be in too much of a rush to expatriate your entire life savings just because of what is happening to the currency. Markets always move in cycles, and even the poor rand will eventually have its day again.
