If you’re in the Mother City and looking to have a wholesome and totally delicious lunch to linger over, then head to Hemelhuijs. Jacques Erasmus is inspiring in his roles as chef, artist, curator and owner. Menus are seasonal and you can still catch the winter menu which is gorgeous on so many levels. The venue is beautiful and tucked away just off the original city fan walk. I started with a carrot, beetroot and pomegranate craft juice served in a tall carafe with a straw. The winter salad of herb roasted artichoke, baked pear and avocado with walnut praline and Parmesan was tasty and nourishing. I also tried the tuna and seaweed tempura with daikon, fresh grapefruit and soy-ginger dressing: a light and an exquisite combination of flavours – just like winter on a plate.

Bosman Family Vineyards is as serious about making excellent Fairtrade wine as they are about their business being centred on the people that work there. It’s no surprise then that most staff live on the premises and own a large part of the business through the Adama Trust (staff turnover is less than 2%). I also love that there are women at the helm of the wine-making – Corlea Fourie and Natasha Williams. The Adama blends reflect the essence of what Bosman is about. While I enjoyed the creamy Adama White blend of seven cultivars, I really fell for the Adama Red which has a Shiraz foundation. With complex red fruit of plums and cherries to it, this is a seamless blend of Cinsaut, Grenache Noir, Nero d’Avola, Mourvedre, Primitivo and Viognier.

Corne, who hails from the UK, moved to South Africa in 2010 and soon began writing a column for a monthly travel magazine. The beer column turned into a beer blog, and the blog turned into a book. African Brew was the first book to showcase local craft beer producers, followed last year by Beer Safari that saw Corne visiting over a hundred breweries across the country. So she knows a little about her beer.
The Vampire Robust Porter from Red Sky Brew comes top of Corne’s list for wintry beers. The first commercially released dark beer from the Gordon’s Bay-based brewery, the Robust Porter offers a smooth and rich introduction to the world of dark beers. Expect lots of enticing chocolate and coffee richness on the nose and palate. Corne also recommends the Imperial IPA from the Cape Brewing Company on the Spice Route Destination outside Paarl. “This is an Imperial stout on steroids. A stouter stout than most,” laughs Corne. “Imperial really just means the beer has got more of everything: more alcohol, more hops… so if you enjoy your hops, but want something a bit bigger and bolder, this is a great choice.”

Dubbed The Cape of Good Hops, it’s crafted by respected brewmaster Wolfgang Koedel from two varieties of American hops, and the brewery’s own unique strain of yeasts. You’ll find bold fruity notes including gooseberries and granadilla, tempered by a strong malty backbone and hoppy bitterness. At 7,5% alcohol, it’ll quickly banish those winter chills.

“Beer is for all weather, and now is the ideal time to discover richer, heavier beers,” says beer blogger and author Lucy Corne.
And whether it’s a Belgian dubbel or Russian Imperial Stout clocking in upwards of 9% alcohol, it’s “beers higher in alcohol that tend to do well at this time of year, especially the dark beers,” says Corne. “Porters, stouts, spiced ales and pumpkin ales are all popular.”

Breakfast like a king Breakfast at The Shortmarket Club seasons classic egg dishes with dashes of old-world glamour and fine-dining panache WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

V
ery few top restaurants open for breakfast, so when Luke Dale-Roberts in partnership with chef Wesley Randles and Simon Widdison (both previously of the Pot Luck Club) made it part of their new Shortmarket Club offering, I was curious to discover what the fine dining take on this least glamorous meal of the day would be. As we selected from the tea menu, daylight streamed down on the central tables, beams of sunlight playing on the striking decorative wall of paper butterflies. The button back banquettes around the walls are lit golden by retro glass lamp shades, giving the room the feel of a last century club waking up to a new day. The breakfast menu is short and unusual. “It’s been interesting taking classic dishes that have almost been forgotten,” says chef Wesley Randles, “changing preconceived ideas of them and giving them a new feel.” However short it is, it’s still hard to decide. Omelette Arnold Bennett won out for me, a decadently rich classic, involving an omelette with housesmoked hake under a rich creamy sauce, topped with a sprinkling of Parmesan and grilled till golden. It comes in a copper pan, and the wholewheat toast (the bread baked in-house, served in an appealing old school toast rack) is essential to mop up all the creaminess.
Another excellent choice was the hot smoked trout with poached egg and salad, with the sweet miso butter raising it above the ordinary. The Scotch & Egg with wild mushrooms and truffle, and the Egg & Soldiers with artichoke brioche are other tempting choices. If you want more than one course, you could start with the quinoa granola with buffalo yoghurt and grapefruit. Wesley changes things up when the mood strikes, sometimes sending out steaming bowls of mieliepap with honeycomb in chilly weather. He’s contemplating waffles with persimmon for the weekend, and a new take on croque-monsieur. As we were leaving, shallow bowls of prickly chestnut husks caught my eye at the open kitchen. Wesley says they are for smoking a signature dish of slow-roasted petit poussin stuffed with chestnuts and a touch of fynbos, brought to table on the smoking chestnut husks. I feel like booking straight back in for lunch.

esign trends often exist in interesting relationships with each other – with two seemingly opposite trends being seen at the same time. At the moment, for example, we’re seeing a trend towards minimalism and maximalism in design. At one extreme, there’s a Scandinavian- and Japanese-inspired paring back of design elements to basic forms and structures, while at the same time other (often European) brands amplify and exaggerate design features for maximum impact. One of the more interesting manifestations of this trend is in super-textured surfaces across the design spectrum. We’ve seen this happening in carpets for a while now, with rugs contrasting high and low pile treatments to create design features out of textural difference. This same approach can also be seen on furniture pieces now, with designers applying hyper-textured textiles onto sofas and chairs to elevate often very
simple silhouettes. Brands like Arte apply this same treatment to wall coverings too, taking them from background to statement piece. This focus on texture is interesting when you look at design more broadly. The things we interact with every day are getting sleeker and simpler – with technology and appliances often endeavouring to be as inconspicuous as possible. With this being the case, we are often starved for texture in our homes. Designers are therefore just responding to this tactile deficiency by turning up the volume on textile textures, adding visual interest to spaces without having to add more things.

T
he Bureaux offers allocated desk space, private office suites and meeting rooms to rent in Woodstock, Cape Town CBD, Sea Point and The Water Club making up around 7,500m2 of entrepreneurfocused work space. Greg Beadle tells us about Bureaux Black, their latest premium space in Sea Point. Q: How did your business start? A: The Bureaux started as an idea popping into my head at 2am one morning mid-2012. I got out of bed, wrote down the ideas and, as the business continues to grow rapidly, those pillars still stand firm today. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We identified Sea Point as an area of high demand for serviced office space and co-working nodes. Our members mostly live in Sea Point, Fresnaye and Bantry Bay, with others commuting from Camps Bay, Llandudno, Hout Bay and the Southern Suburbs.
PROPERTY NEWS
Q: How did you find your premises? A: We have strong relationships with landlords around Cape Town and always try to start working with them early on in the development stages of new buildings to ensure we have the optimal setup. We believe location is paramount to our members, offering them convenience, productivity and the perfect environment to focus on their business. On average we look at four potential new sites a month. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The Point centre provides the perfect habitat for us with underground parking, a wide range of retailers, coffee shops, eateries, a gym, doctors and wellness specialists. Our views across the Atlantic Ocean are possibly the best in South Africa. Security, 24/7 access, fibre-optic internet ensuring a high-speed internet service, and a dedicated reception service round off the best possible premises for serviced office space. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: R SAWeb, Berman Brothers Group, BUC Fitness Club, Knead, Bootlegger Coffee Company, Sorbet, Vodacom, Nedbank and Discovery. Q: What are the shop rentals like in this area? A: Being a redevelopment building, the rentals are probably the highest in the area. That being said, the building is fully occupied, so all tenants see fair value in the rental rates. Q: What is your foot traffic? A: We have a large amount of
5
prospective members walking in on a daily basis to consider working from The Bureaux. Word of mouth from our existing tenants tends to attract most of our new members. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We are looking to expand within Cape Town as well as further afield within the next 12 months. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We offer virtual memberships on top of our normal rentals. Virtual Members are given access to our address for business address and mailing purposes, as well as reception services for VoIP lines if necessary. This specific tenant never needs to set foot in our space. Q: What’s your most popular offering? A: Most of our members choose The Bureaux as their flexible work habitat as we include all our services in one rate rather than, as our competitors do, add on extra charges for services like using meeting rooms, internet usage and kitchen access – complicating what should be a simplified working environment. Also, our standard office notice period is three months and allocated desk rentals work on a month-to-month notice basis.

Residential sales in Sandton hit R8bn mark S
andton and its surrounding suburbs have generated an estimated R8bn in residential sales in the past 18 months, says Charles Vining, MD, Seeff Sandton. A fair number of these sales have either been cash deals and/or in the R5m or more price range. “About 10 sales a year are made in the R20m plus price range in Sandton and we are seeing more activity in this segment of
the market than in the prior 18 months. To date, the highest price our branch has achieved in 2016 has been R26m for a mansion in Sandhurst,” he says. “The highest asking prices are generally in the mid-R20m range. These homes are located in the most desirable suburbs, especially Sandhurst and Hyde Park.” Vining says Seeff Sandton currently has three properties
in the R60m to R75m price range and six homes in the R32m to R40m bracket. One of the most lavish properties on Seeff Sandton’s books, is a R60m home reminiscent of the Ewing family’s Southfork Ranch on the television series Dallas. The erf is 5,776m 2 . There are five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a gym, spa, cinema, library, cigar bar, summerhouse and tennis court.

new development of space has been brisk, and so much will depend on the future pace of retail sales and retail building activity. “Whether under- or oversupplies of retail space will develop, also has much to do with the level of new retail development activity,” he says.
Loos is not sure, however, if this growth will contain vacancy rates in retail space on a national average basis because the pace of
StatsSA Retail Building Statistics point to high levels of retail space plans passed for the 12 months to 30 April of 1,405,425m 2 . Yet the
additional real retail sales/new square metres of retail space planned ratio per month for the 12 months to April 2016, has declined to R664/m 2 . The additional real retail sales/ new square metres completed ratio declined to R1,664/m 2 over the same period. This suggests that the risk of rising retail vacancy rates has been on the increase early this year despite the real retail sales growth rate.

All welcome? T
here is an often-repeated phrase that government officials like to use to promote South Africa as an investment destination. “This country,” they say, “is open for business.” It’s meant to portray South Africa as a place where new enterprises, new innovations and new people are welcome. It even suggests a country that actively encourages foreigners to bring in their expertise and find opportunities for their businesses here. What governments say and what they do, however, are often rather at odds. And in this case, that is the unfortunate reality.
how much a country can benefit from welcoming skilled entrepreneurs. A big part of the economic success enjoyed by Singapore in the second half of the last century was based on encouraging immigration and new enterprises. The country also imposed very low or no tax at all on what it called “pioneer industries”. These are lessons that South Africa would do well to learn. If we really want to be “open for business” that should start with relooking at our immigration policy and making it far easier for those who appreciate the opportunities that this country offers to do business here.
South Africa’s immigration policy often makes it very difficult for foreigners to come into the country to work and set up their own enter prises. There seems to be a fear that allowing such people into this country will see them stealing local jobs or using up local resources that should be benefiting South Africans. This is thoroughly misguided. Economics is not a zero-sum game. Just because a foreigner comes into South Africa and starts a business does not mean that there will be one less business for a local citizen to start. On the contrary, someone setting up a business in South Africa is growing the economy, creating employment and quite likely stimulating other businesses. This is either through bringing in new competition or establishing demand for goods or services that can be met by local suppliers. Perhaps even more importantly, immigrants might bring in new skills, new technologies and new ways of doing things. These obviously benefit their businesses in the short term, but these innovations are quickly adopted and passed on to drive creativity and performance among not only direct competitors but sometimes in the wider economy. In making it difficult for foreigners to become residents in South Africa and start their own businesses here, the country is actively discouraging this from happening. This is a great pity because there are great examples of

About the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
W
ith the dramatic Helderberg mountains on one side, glorious views over False Bay on the other and picturesque vineyards in between, Somerset West has all the ingredients of picture postcard appeal. It’s therefore no surprise that the once small town has grown dramatically over the last decade, as newcomers settle here from all over the country, attracted by the leafy streets, outdoor lifestyle and convenient proximity to Cape Town and the international airport. The new secure estates and developments may have expanded its boundaries but Somerset West retains its identity as a small town with a strong sense of community. Families are well catered for with good public primary schools (Beaumont and De Hoop), Parel Vallei High School, and a growing number of excellent private schools. Radloff Park offers a whole range of sports activities from cricket to squash and its green fields on the banks of the Lourens River are a magnet for dogwalkers, kids on bicycles and runners.
It’s easy to head up into the Helderberg Nature Reserve for bird-watching, picnics, hiking in the fynbos and summer concerts. For watersports the beach at Strand is only a 10-minute drive away. THINGS TO DO:
The pleasures of the winelands are another attraction for foodies and wine connoisseurs – historic Vergelegen and Lourensford are practically within the town, Waterkloof is just outside and many more renowned estates lie between the town and Stellenbosch, so that you are spoilt for choice when it comes to fine dining and wine tasting right on your doorstep. On a more practical note residents appreciate the fact that although Cape Town is within easy reach for commuting, the town itself has everything they need in the way of shopping and services – from the 3km length of Somerset Mall to the chic Waterstone Village with its flagship Woolworths food store and the bustling Main Street.
• Hike in the Helderberg Nature Reserve. • Picnic at Vergelegen Estate • Play golf at Erinvale Golf Club or Somerset West Golf Club. • Watch a community theatre production at The Playhouse Theatre.
I love the friendly and hospitable community, and the fact that it is so close to the winelands and the sea. Whether you are a fitness freak, a shopaholic or just simply laid back, Somerset West really is dynamic and caters for every lifestyle. CHAZ MALAN, RESIDENT

Agent commentary Q: What types of properties are available and what can buyers expect to pay? A: Somerset West offers a range of properties to suit most budgets between R750,000 and R30m. Sectional title properties start at about R750,000 for a two-bedroom unit in a secure complex. Free-standing homes in the suburbs are hard to find under R2m – the majority between R2,5m and R5m. In high demand are properties in gated estates, where a luxury home of 400m2 to 600m2 in Erinvale will cost over R10m. A new home in a mid-range estate will cost between R2,8m and R4m for between 175m2 and 225m2. Top-end homes in Spanish Farm range from R10m to R60m.
Q: How has the area changed over the past five years? A: Somerset West is increasingly sought after for its central, conve nient location close to Cape Town International Airport and Cape Town itself, and its country lifestyle with all the city luxuries. New homes are being built on several estates filling the increased de mand for accommodation. Improved infrastructure includes double lanes on Sir Lowry’s Pass, and a new road connecting Sir Lowry’s to the N2. New shopping malls include Vergelegen Plein and The Sanctuary. New schools include Reddam House, Curro Castle Nursery and Curro Sitari. Somerset West is also attracting some of the best doctors and specialists in the country.
Q: What attracts buyers to the Somerset West area? A: Somerset West is a village, a community, a haven that offers the lifestyle we all yearn for. We fall under the management of the City of Cape Town but we’re certainly no city. Our unique location between the Helderberg mountain and the beaches of False Bay ensures minimal traffic and excellent security. We have the luxury of winelands, beaches, mountain trails, top schools, and the world-class Vergelegen Mediclinic – all within 20 minutes of the airport and 40 minutes of Cape Town. It’s no wonder that our town has become one of the most desired locations in South Africa.

Strong horizontal lines and floating elements create an interesting play with the more traditional pitched roof maximising views and natural light through the clerestory windows. Integration of inside and outside is a strong design feature in terms of the large glass sliding doors that open up to green courtyards and the estate’s beautiful natural surroundings. The home is built for the perfect balance between family living and entertaining guests with an open-plan layout, centered around the indoor braai area. Natural modern materials are used, such as exposed timber rafters, off-shutter concrete and natural stonework, which contrasts against the crisp, clean white plastered walls and modern joinery.
Superior Finishes • Aluminium external windows, doors and shutters • Automated garage doors • Belgotex carpets • Built-in braai area • Built-in gas fireplace • Ceiling bulkheads • Daikin inverter air conditioners • Energy saving LED downlights • Europlugs • Exposed Trusses • Fully automated irrigation system • Geberit concealed cisterns • Granite countertops • Hans Grohe taps • Heatpump • High speed fibre connection • Siemens gas hob and electric oven • Superior quality 600mm x 600mm porcelain tiles • Swimming pool • Timber Pergolas • Wine Cellar OPTIONAL: • Solar energy plant including lithium batteries • Water feature * The developer is entitled to change any of the finishes to another finish of a similar standard at its sole discretion.
