ver wanted to see your local chefs in action, under pressure, running the kitchen and hearing the electric words “Yes, chef” as new orders come in? The Chef’s Table, Durban’s newest open-plan restaurant set in the hub of Umhlanga, gives diners a unique feasting experience. Inspired by their travels and restaurant experiences in New York and other cities around the world, restaurateurs Soti Sonitis and Sean Gray created The Chef’s Table to be an open-plan kitchen. The kitchen is at the heart of the restaurant, which acts as a theatre for diners as they watch head chef Kayla-Ann Osborn and her team. This setup also gives the chefs a chance to stay connected to the energy of the diners. “With The Chef’s Table we wanted to create a special place where people can feel a connection to food. My first connection to cooking comes from my gran. As a small kid I had this inexplainable desire to help her in the kitchen; it filled me with such great excitement,” says Kayla-Ann.

The Chef’s Table menu is crafted almost daily around the seasonal, fresh and local ingredients provided by local suppliers and organic farmers. Dishes borrow traditions, techniques and styles from all over the world, and ultimately every ingredient is cleverly paired. Taste buds are taken on a journey with each dish presented, like the lemon and Parmesan risotto starter married with a pea purée, black pepper ice cream, mint gel and egg yolk. Kayla-Ann’s food style is simple and each ingredient is treated with respect. “I believe that if you give due respect to your ingredients, they will show you their best colours, tastes and textures,” she says. resh, tangy, crunchy, delicious – what’s not to love? If you’re like me, you now have a serious sushi craving and are doing a mad Google search to find your nearest sushi special spot. Put down the phone, because we’ve got you covered!

Morningside and Glenwood

Ding Feng: 031 303 2887 A relatively new spot on the Florida Road strip, Ding Feng does killer sushi! Plus, it doesn’t skimp on the wasabi, ginger and soy if you’re getting a takeaway. Cop half price on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Try this: the seared tuna fashion sandwiches.

A

ny self-respecting metro man in the 031 will be familiar with the niche barbershop, Nev the Barber. We chat with the man behind the shop, Nev Ebelthite. Q: Tell us a bit about yourself. A: I’m a barber/hairstylist and own/ run two barbershops called Nev the Barber. I’ve been in the industry for about 10 years now. I trained at a leading Durban salon and decided to branch out on my own in 2010. Q: How was Nev the Barber born? A: Nev the Barber first opened in 2010, in a tiny little shop in Glenwood. The idea started back when I was working as a hairstylist in a traditional salon, which was great, but the more I spoke to my male clients the more I realised the need for a specialised barbershop. At the time, there wasn’t really much available for men. So I decided I wanted to open a really cool, affordable barbershop that men could get an amazing haircut and feel relaxed in, grab a coffee and just chill. Q: What do you specialise in? A: I’d say the two main things we specialise in are haircuts

– we give an amazing fade – and beard grooming. Q: Share a little bit about your stylists. A: We have five barbers/stylists right now and all of them are amazing. We kind of do it all – men and women’s hair – but have really specialised in men’s hair and grooming. Q: Any future plans for the shop? A: I’d definitely love to grow the shops into more communities, as at the moment we’re in Glenwood and Durban North. I just love the idea of being a community shop and creating a community within the barbershops. We’re also currently starting to offer cut and colour services for women from our Durban North store. I think that we’ve been holding off on it, but the timing is right and I feel like ladies are really digging the relaxed atmosphere of a barbershop. So now men and women can be a part of the Nev the Barber community. Q: What do you love most about your neighbourhood? A: Glenwood is amazing, it’s got such an eclectic vibe to it – young, old, different cultures and classes. It’s just such an interesting area to be in. The people are awesome and I love that we’ve become a part of that community. Q: Where’s the nearest place to grab good chow before or after a cut? A: I’m a huge fan of Mooki noodles – great food and great people.

Taco Sushi: 031 303 9584 Don’t knock it till you try it. Taco Sushi offers daily half price specials, as well as fresh, delicious sushi and an impressive sushi menu. Try this: the prawn tempura cucumber rolls. The Sushi Corner: 078 535 8659 This is a small, intimate spot with unrivalled sushi, The Sushi Corner is perfect for chow and a great vibe. Head there for half price on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Try this: don’t skip the Drowning Prawn. Green Mango: 031 312 7054 While it doesn’t do specials, it’s worth saving up for Green Mango’s top-notch sushi menu. Try this: spicy seared salmon sashimi.

Durban North and Umhlanga Area

Bite Your Tongue: 031 563 4419 Sit around the sushi bar and enjoy some top-class sushi, perhaps even with an authentic Asian beer. Half price specials are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Try this: the bean curd nigiri is a must. Also, don’t be shy to ask for extra Asian mayo. Bamboo Sushi Lounge: 031 561 2705 The original spot for sushi buffets, Bamboo Sushi offers a great menu, as well as specials – including every day half-price specials on selected sushi and R185 sushi buffets! Try this: order the sweetened prawn Gunkan.

Upper Highway area

Takami Sushi Bar: 078 900 8694 A small, underrated spot with topclass sushi! Head to Takami in Gillitts, and take advantage of the specials, including “buy one, get one free” Mondays and Tuesdays, and 30% off sushi from Wednesday to Sunday. Try this: order an extra portion of the salmon roses – you won’t regret it! Tashiky Sushi: 031 765 3897 Head to the Oxford Village Market to get your sushi fix from Tashiky. Known for signature sushi dishes, Tashiky offers R149 ladies’ night specials. Try this: the tempura Cali rolls will blow your mind!

Dynamic lighting WORDS: CHRIS REID

IMAGE: BROKIS

T

here’s a general trend towards interactivity in design at the moment, as we try and make our physical world like our digital world. The endless possibilities of the latter mean that when we engage with the real world, it’s often frustratingly static – at least when it comes to our furniture and decor. That’s why modular and adaptable furniture pieces are increasingly seen at design shows, and the same approach is filtering down to the world of lighting. As homes have become increasingly minimal, the trend over the last few years has been for lighting to

follow suit. At the same time, LED technology means that lighting can also be more seamless than ever before because of a much smaller carbon footprint. What we’re seeing increasingly now, however, is a reaction to this approach by designers creating dynamic and interactive lighting pieces for modern homes. On the tech-savvy side, Philips has seen great success with its smart lightbulbs that can be controlled remotely by tablets and smartphones to change colour, adapt to ambient light and more. At the lo-fi end of the spectrum, however, we’re seeing the reemergence of adjustable and dynamic lighting installations.

These can be moved and adapted by users to change the focus or intensity, or just create a new, more interesting shape when they want to. A great example is the Capsula Suspension Lamp by Brokis, available locally at Crema Design. Whether smart or not, this kind of interactive design is here to stay in our homes, be it in the form of our appliances, furniture or lighting.

Cornubia Shopping Mall to open next year

MORE ONLINE: bit.do/kznhood

C

ornubia Shopping Mall, current ly being developed on the north coastal development corridor of Durban, is set to open in September next year. The 85,000m² mall is being built on the old sugar cane fields alongside the M41 at Flanders Road. Although mixed use, the major portion of the Cornubia development will be residential, with 25,000 housing units ultimately being developed. Cornubia is a national pilot project of the Breaking New Ground policy launched in 2008. Roughly half the size of the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Investec Property is developing a differentiated product in terms of tenant mix and design with two supermarkets, and 1,630 parking bays and 1,608 basement bays.

“This forms part of a holistic spatial development,” says Karen Petersen, development director, Tongaat Hulett Developments, which has made the land available for the project. “The shopping centre is one of the key amenities that will be provided to the 1,200ha mixed-use development which stretches from Umhlanga towards the King Shaka International Airport. Construction began in March 2016 and, with six cranes in action, has already moved to the second level.” Darryl Mayers, joint head of Investec Property, says, “Boasting an innovative design by Bentel Associates, the shopping centre is 80% let, with key national retailers as anchor tenants.”

Relief as lending rate remains the same

O We come from KwaMashu, Ntuzuma and Inanda, so we know the needs of the community. We want to provide jobs and are looking at projects that will impact on the area. We want to see this place being elevated. That is one of our core visions. WANDILE ZULU, CEO, HZ INVESTMENTS

ridge City is an exciting joint venture between the eThekwini Municipality and Tongaat Hulett to create a fully functional, mixed-use town centre, incorporating retail, business, residential and light industrial properties near Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu. “The whole picture of what we envisioned for Bridge City is now coming together with the development of key sites within the town centre,” says Brian Ive, development executive, Bridge City. “Our plan for a functional, mixed-use development that combines public sector sites and services and excellent public transport with private sector investment, is now almost complete.” There are several elements of the area which are already fully operational, including the 48,000m2 Bridge City Shopping Centre and the regional magistrate’s court. A 500-bed regional state hospital is under construction and scheduled to open in 2019, while a 150-bed

private hospital and nursing home is also planned. One of the main areas of focus is transport, and Bridge City will soon be the second-busiest transport interchange in the city, second only to Berea Road/ Warwick Junction, with over 100,000 commuters expected to pass through daily once all transport modes are fully operational. “As soon as the transport nodes are complete, we expect property prices to appreciate considerably which ensures sound longterm return on investment for developers,” Ive says. New residential development is also key and there are plans to construct residential accommodation above the Bridge City Shopping Centre, as well as on the northern side of the retail complex. Bridge City is providing opportunities for young entrepreneurs such as HZ Investments, which is headed by local entrepreneurs and property developers under the age of 23. The first R650m development, HZ Empire, begins with a R250m first phase

which includes a petrol filling station and a six-floor, mixeduse development. “We come from KwaMashu, Ntuzuma and Inanda, so we know the needs of the community. We want to provide jobs and are looking at projects that will impact on the area. We want to see this place being elevated. That is one of our core visions,” says Wandile Zulu, CEO, HZ Investments.

Our plan for a functional, mixed-use development that combines public sector sites and services and excellent public transport with private sector investment, is now almost complete BRIAN IVE, DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE, BRIDGE CITY

ver the last few years, the prime lending rate has increased by 2%, which has had a marked impact on homeowners and prospective buyers seeking to get a foot in the door. A homeowner, who purchased a property for R1m at the end of 2014 with a bond linked to prime, will currently be paying R1,306 more for their home. According to John Loos, household and property sector strategist, FNB, from the end of 2013 up until June this year, the cumulative increase in the bond instalment on the average-priced home has increased by 42,1%. Adrian Goslett, CEO, RE/MAX of Southern Africa, says the Monetary Policy Committee’s decision to keep the rates unchanged is the right

decision for both the property market and the greater economy. “An interest rate hike would only dampen consumer sentiment and further slow down the property market. This year has been tough for consumers who have already had to absorb two interest rate hikes, along with an increased cost of living. While the housing market still reflects an ongoing demand, the effects of the slower economy and higher financial demands on consumers has been felt in the property sector.” He notes that affordability will continue to be a driving force behind the property market and a rate hike would negatively impact that. “Consumers who are able to reduce their household debt-to-income levels have an increased chance of showing the necessary affordability levels to purchase a home,” Goslett says.

Spring is here and traditionally this is a time when many people start considering selling, buying or relocating, and as a result, it is a general truism that the market picks up from September with increasing levels of activity through the summer months into March ANDREW GOLDING, CEO, PAM GOLDING PROPERTY GROUP

TENONQ rethinking communal spaces

C

ommunal urban living is the cornerstone around which TENONQ, the latest and largest development to be launched by Blok, has been designed. Located at 10 Quendon Road, Sea Point, the entire eight-storey development has been designed to be an extension of each resident’s apartment. “While communal areas in apartment blocks are nothing new, we have set out to create shared spaces with activities in mind that enable residents to not only connect with their neighbours, but also enjoy the benefits that this brings in terms of safety, convenience and community. Human interaction has essentially been designed into the communal spaces,” says Jacques van Embden, MD and co-founder, Blok. The development is situated between

Sea Point’s Kloof Street and Regent Road, and will comprise nine onebedroom apartments, 10 one-bedroom lofts, 32 two-bedroom apartments (mostly duplexes), as well as two two-bedroom duplex penthouses. TENONQ will also have ample parking with one or two parking bays per apartment, plus bays for visitors, motorbikes and bicycles. “Our aim with TENONQ is to expand the Blok development portfolio with not only our largest project yet, but also one that truly highlights our dedication to communal urban living; something that we see as integral to the success of any developing urban area,” says Jacques. TENONQ is scheduled for occupation during summer 2018/2019 and apartments are priced from R2,4m.

Green home renovation Recycled materials not only save you money on your home project, but also help protect the environment WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK

Places to look for 2nd-hand materials

Local community sites and other internet sales sites are great places to look for second-hand building materials. Demolishers: if they don’t have what you’re looking for, put your name on their waiting list.

If you see a building being demolished/remodelled, stop and ask the foreman/ owner about materials.

I

t’s time to think differently. Our heads are all focused on water, electricity and recycling our garbage, but if you need to replace or renovate, think green. Amazingly, one of the seemingly justifiable gripes of those who want to buy eco-friendly materials, is the lack of knowledge and, often, interest. Did you know that you can buy carpeting with a high recycled plastic content? Have you considered eco paint? Have you thought about bamboo flooring, or kitchen counter tops made from recycled materials? As the demand for eco-friendly products has grown, so too has their sophistication. You may not be prepared to sacrifice the look or feel of regular products, but if you do your homework, you won’t have to. There are quality products made from recycled materials out there. Ask yourself one question, though: “How do I know if one material is more environmentally friendly than another?” It’s fine for those in the know, but most of us are enthusiastic beginners. Ask many questions. Also bear in mind that if your sustainable product has to be flown halfway across the world from China,

you may be better off looking for something that is not quite as sustainable, but available locally. Renewable bamboo is a good alternative to oak flooring, but if you can access reclaimed oak locally, you’re doing the smarter thing.

My business

Take vintage clothing and mix it up with a little style and finesse. Locate it within one of Durban’s thriving urban regeneration programmes and you get Mind Over Matter Clothing. WORDS: CATH JENKIN

IMAGE: SUPPLIED

A good place to start when you’re renewing an element of your home is to investigate salvaged, refurbished, or remanufactured materials: anything from bricks to doors, windows and flooring – even paving stones. Not only are you likely to save money buying second-hand, but you are also reusing resources, which is a good thing. In addition, you can modernise – think about staining that parquet flooring black, or bleaching it for the beach house. Recycled plastic is being reconstituted into some quality products, like kitchen counter tops, and decking, and you can barely distinguish between wood, granite and this composite material. So, next time you need to look at your roof insulation, think eco. There are so many alternatives which not only save you money, but are also immensely satisfying to install, knowing you’ve taken the green – or at least greener – road.

T

he brainchild of Ndumi Matiwane, Mind Over Matter Clothing hosts a collection of specially curated vintage clothing that’s sourced, restored, restyled or upcycled to create a unique line that includes beautiful accessories. We spoke with Ndumi about her exciting enterprise. Q: How did your business start? A: My business began when I started selling off my old vintage clothes after a move from Cape Town to Durban. I started selling at markets and from home, which led my business to grow and take off. I began taking it a little more seriously and started collecting and restyling vintage items for my customers. Our first store opened at 8 Morrison Street, and we recently moved to 39 Station Drive. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: It’s a developing industrial area that’s home to emerging and creative businesses. The precinct is a promising and exciting place to be, with much growth and further development of the area under way and planned for the future. Q: How did you find your premises? A: A friend who operates a business from within the Station Drive precinct referred me. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It’s a central, easy-to-access location, and the area is frequented by my target market – those who appreciate art-driven products and creative inspiration. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Station Drive hosts a diverse mixture

of creative businesses. Restaurants, design studios and companies focused on creating artisan goods are located here. These include The Plant, The Warehouse, The Design Factory, Studio031, The Foundry, and Savior Brand Co. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Quite reasonable, especially when compared to other retail spaces. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: A number of visitors to the nearby coffee shop pop in to see us, and the wide range of events hosted within the precinct are great for business. We have First Thursdays, held on the First Thursday of the month, which is great for business. We also recently started having regular I Heart Market events, hosted by The Plant, which also increases foot traffic for most of the shops located within Station Drive. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, I hope to develop my own brand of clothing in the near future. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We receive a lot of customers through our online presence, especially through people who follow us on Instagram (@mindovermatterdbn). Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Shirts, jackets and dresses.

here is something very attractive about the entire Dolphin Coast region, and it’s no accident that the area has virtually exploded with new developments in recent years. Indeed Ballito, once a small, sleepy seaside town, has capitalised on this growth and has mushroomed into a commercial centre that now offers its residents a wealth of shopping and entertainment opportunities. Likewise, nearby Umhlanga has become the go-to place for the majority of hip Durbanites. Excellent restaurants, a slew of good restaurants and all the entertainment on offer at Gateway Theatre of Shopping are just some of the reasons this spot remains a popular choice for revellers. Part of the increased attraction has to be ascribed to the fact that the airport has relocated to the area. This has led to a number of high-profile businesspeople – who operate out of Gauteng – moving their families to the coast while they commute to work as needed. As crazy as this may

sound, it appears that it’s quicker to commute between Joburg and Durban via air and the Gautrain, than it is to drive between Pretoria and Joburg during rush-hour traffic. Good schools along the length of the North Coast, a terrific year-round climate with arguably the best winter weather in the country, and a wide variety of secure upmarket estates, have added to the attraction. As such, this almost nomadic lifestyle trend is likely to continue well into the future. Locals are also drawn to this somewhat quieter section of the coast and, again, the secure living is a major drawcard. Estates such as Zimbali, Simbithi, Brettenwood Coastal Estate, Palm Lakes Family Estate and Mount Richmore Village Estate are all well-known and highly regarded places to live. The fact that they are situated away from the hustle and bustle of Durban is an added bonus for those looking for a quieter lifestyle.

Agent commentary Q: What type of developments generally appeal to buyers? A: In South Africa, where crime is an issue, the demand for houses in a secure estate is constantly on the rise. In addition, buyers nowadays are very clued up. They do research on the internet, they are very aware of pricing, and they obviously are attracted by successful developments in a good location. They are looking for the perfect family home with a garden in an estate where they can access lots of amenities, coupled with an affordable levy. Properties such as these are the top sellers. The finishes in a house, especially in the kitchen and bathroom, can make or break a deal.

MOUNT RICHMORE VILLAGE ESTATE

Q: What is driving demand for property on estates in this area? A: Gated estates now make up a massive portion of residential property on the North Coast. Why is this happening? Firstly, South African parents are wanting their families to grow up in neighbourhoods and communities where children can roam freely, play outdoors and have communal amenities such as swimming pools, tennis courts and gyms all safely within the walls of their chosen community. Secondly, return on investment is important. Over the past 10 years it has been proven that when you sell your land or property in a gated estate, there is a greater return than on homes sold in residential areas.

Q: What continues to draw buyers to the North Coast, and why do developments in this area appeal? A: The quality of estates on offer is the main reason developments continue to draw buyers from all over. Good private schools, including Curro Mount Richmore, and terrific shopping facilities up and down the coast, allow those living here a lifestyle like no other. They enjoy the convenience of town living without the hustle and bustle of city life. Developments are also a popular choice for those looking at retirement options in secure, well-run estates. Coastal property prices are often significantly lower than those in similar estates in Gauteng, which will always boost buyer interest.
