I’ll never forget seeing that first issue of Neighbourhood and the feeling of pride I had in seeing all our hard work pay off. I’m so happy to be part of the team that every week puts together five great publications.

I remember first putting together the strategy for the Neighbourhood website and social media a few months before we launched. What an incredible experience to see it all come alive! This has been the highlight of my career thus far.

This intimate restaurant and bar area allows patrons to get a taste of these locally produced spirits, as well as top-notch mezzes, meals and cocktails. Surrounded by the working distillery, customers are treated to contemporary food created by husband and wife duo, Jordan and Nat Semple. These UKtrained chefs are renowned for their adventurous menus and take care in sourcing local ingredients to create meals that complement the restaurant’s selection of signature cocktails. By raising the stakes with the addition of two international chefs, Distillery 031 also made sure to offer the best cocktails by bringing on board mixologist Jason Andrew. He’s responsible for shaking and stirring up a range of refreshingly original cocktail mixes (using home-made spirits, of course). The cherry on the top of this perfect blend of good food and drink has to be the live music at Distillery 031 every first Thursday of the month. Known as The Still Sessions, the venue has opened its doors to a variety of local acts including Dan Patlansky and Ildo Nandja. The 031 Bar & Restaurant is open Thursday to Saturday for lunch (noon to 3pm) and dinner (6pm to 10pm). You can check out The Still Sessions on the first floor of The Foundry, 43 Station Drive.

Over the past year, I’ve gotten more pleasure out of Neighbourhood than any other brand. Bringing neighbourhoods and communities alive in print has been both fun and rewarding.

y definition, a distillery is a place where spirits are manufactured. However, Distillery 031 is so much more than that. Opening its doors late last year in the Station Drive Precinct, Distillery 031 started out by creating a range of independent, Durban-distilled, limited-edition artisan spirits including vodka, gin and absinthe as well as accompanying cordials such as all-natural tonic water. Since then, Durban entrepreneur and independent distiller Andrew Ral has opened the venue up to the public with the addition of the 031 Bar & Restaurant.

uly holidays are upon us, and kids often start getting a bit restless around this time. Here are a few things working parents can do to keep their kids entertained while also keeping their minds fit for the second half of the school year.

Learn to cook

Reading

Holiday programmes

Encourage them to read as often as possible, even if it is comic books or magazines. Whether they like to read during the mornings, in the afternoons, or after supper with mom and dad, reading will help them with their vocabulary and help them use their imagination.

Journal

Buy your child a journal and encourage them to keep a diary during the holidays. They can do whatever they like in their journal – they can draw what they did, paste in pictures from magazines, write stories or even their plans. This is a fun activity that will help them with their creativity and literacy skills.

Following a recipe can be a handy way for your children to practise their maths skills. Let your child help you with baking and they’ll learn how important maths is and how it can be used in everyday life. If you are planning on enrolling your child in local holiday programmes, be sure to let them choose which one to be involved in. Your child will have more fun if they are doing something they enjoy. If holiday programmes aren’t an option, look out for holiday activities at your local library or museum.

Plan a treat

Towards the end of the holiday, plan a special outing somewhere your child has always wanted to visit. This shows them that the holiday is ending and that everything will go back to normal. It also acts as a reward for good behaviour and gives your child – and you – something to look forward to.

Hotel boom in Africa

T

his year is considered the year for growth in the tourism sector across Africa. The number of international visitors to Africa is foraecasted to reach the 85 million mark by 2020. Further to the recent news on Radisson Blu opening in Umhlanga, Durban, hotel group Carlson Rezidor has just announced three new hotels to be rolled out in Africa: in Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Mauritius. Africa is considered the biggest growth market for the hotel group, with Carlson Rezidor signing a new hotel deal in

Africa every 37 days and opening a new hotel in Africa every 60 days. “Africa is by far our biggest growth market,” says Wolfgang M Neumann, president and CEO of The Rezidor Hotel Group. Carlson Rezidor also announced the signing of its first Quorvus Collection in Africa: the five-star, 244-room luxury Emerald Grand Hotel & Spa in Lagos, Nigeria. The group also signed a new Radisson Blu Hotel Harare in Zimbabwe (245 rooms) and a Park Inn by Radisson in Quatre Bornes, the new commercial hub of Mauritius.

SA’s priciest home fetches nearly R300m

A

Bantry Bay home sold for R290m in May, the priciest residential property in South Africa, according to sellers Denise Dogon, CEO, Dogon Group Properties, and partners Adrien Epstein and Vicky Atlas. The modern house by design and architecture company Saota, has state-of-the-art finishes throughout and luxurious accommodation. The property takes up three erven comprising 5,200m2 on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard. It was bought fully furnished and kitted. Epstein says the buyer is a German industrialist who is “very happy with his purchase”.

Work starting on Tshwane Regional Mall

C

onstruction of the Tshwane Regional Mall begins this month, according to the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) and Isibonelo Property Services. Building costs of the mall are estimated at R996m, with part of the funding provided by the PIC. The mall was called a catalytic project at the Tshwane International Trade and Infrastructure Investment Conference in May. It is expected to change the shopping experience for residents of Mamelodi and surrounding areas. It is close to transport routes and 3,000 taxis are expected to operate on site daily. There are also plans to link the mall with other transport

modes such as Tshwane Rapid Transit and Gautrain routes. Gross lettable area has been allocated: about 17,403m 2 for fashion, 12,020m 2 for supermarkets, 8,188m 2 for general stores, and 5,031m 2 for sit-down restaurants and a food court. The remaining space will go to government offices, medical services, general stores, health and beauty, financial services, and homeware. Tshwane Regional Mall will supply facilities for about 600 informal traders, and offer about 3,750 job opportunities. Construction is expected to provide 1,500 job opportunities. Another 2,250 job opportunities are expected following construction, in retail, cleaning, security and maintenance.

ove over, golf estate living, the new trend in South African property is game reserve living, and with two new residential game reserves near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZuluNatal, Intaba Ridge Private Game Estate and Mayibuye Game Estate, this lifestyle is now available to locals. Intaba Ridge has proved popular with buyers with 28 homes already occupied and another 15 under construction. Currently in the early stages of building, Mayibuye Game Reserve will incorporate a 4,600ha reserve boasting the Big Five as well as a world-class hotel, wedding venue, conference centre, spa and restaurants, along with two residential components for potential buyers to consider: Mayibuye Lifestyle Estate and Mayibuye Private Residence. The development will see the introduction of elephants into the area for the first time in

150 years, and will incorporate a wildlife rehabilitation facility and select breeding programmes. Mayibuye will be the closest Big Five reserve to Durban at only 45 minutes’ drive, making commuting an option. “Intaba Ridge was developed to be in harmony with nature but close to KZN’s capital and some of South Africa’s top schools,” says Brendan Falkson, director, Sign Power Investments, the developers. The estate has an exclusive community centre, swimming pool, tennis court, play and braai areas, boma and watering hole and a wealth of wildlife including wildebeest, impala, blesbok, reedbuck, duiker, zebra and endangered oribi. Developing a residential estate on a game reserve has its challenges and Intaba Ridge has the most secure perimeter game estate fence in KZN with a 2,4m electrified outer fence and an additional 1,5m high

internal electric fence. “It had to be carefully designed to keep both residents and wildlife, especially the oribi, safe from predators, such as jackals, and poachers,” says Falkson. The estate also has 24/7 access control, CCTV and manned security patrols. All of this offers residents a unique lifestyle at one with nature. “The wide open spaces and game corridors offer the privacy of space and the advantage of being able to interact with free-ranging game. Effectively, residents are able to enjoy a game reserve as their back garden,” says Falkson.

Water: use a JoJo-type tank for garden/car washing, link waste water downpipe to a simple system to reuse this water for the garden, plant indigenous plants that don’t require a lot of water, install restricted-flow shower heads, and use the shower instead of the bath.

esigning green buildings isn’t purely about installing energy-saving elements. It’s about the orientation of the home, ventilation to capitalise on cool breezes and reduce heat, the role of ceilings, smart materials better adapted for heating or cooling, and, of course, using recycled materials. Start with the basics. New technology is far more energy-efficient than old, so do your homework when replacing your fridge, freezer and so on, and examine the Energy Star ratings when buying new appliances. Consider a heat pump – and/or repositioning a geyser adjacent to where the hot water’s required, so there’s no cold water wasted while you wait for the hot. Installing long-lasting LED bulbs also makes a difference – buy a reputable brand that delivers on its promise on the number of hours of light. What about photovoltaic panels or other big-ticket expenses? For large corporations that use a lot of electricity, water and – most expensive

of all – air-conditioning, their return on investment for installing alternative energy sources can pay dividends. But as a family in a standard house, can you ever recoup that initial outlay?

Property isn’t a short-term invest­ ment, so you’re likely to be looking at upwards of 10 years. And don’t underestimate the value that prospective home-buyers place on smart alternative energy sources like a heat pump, solar geysers or panels. They are all worthwhile investments. Given that some municipalities are effectively “buying back” surplus energy you generate, and that residential time-of-use tariffs are on the cards (more expensive electricity during peak periods), electricity saving is more than green. It could get you out of the red. If you’re serious, bring in an expert and get a home energy rating. They’ll tell you what’s achievable, and set priorities according to your budget. You’ve got nothing to lose, and plenty to gain.

A: My husband and I decided to choose country over city – he’d continue his work as a management consultant, and I’d give up the magazine industry. The Midlands would be the perfect space in which our young daughter could grow up. She was accepted at Clifton Prep in Nottingham Road, and a very close friend found us the perfect cottage to rent on a smallholding in Lidgetton. I’ve always been creative, but my career didn’t lend itself to that, so this was my chance. Caversham Textiles was my first stop as it is virtually our neighbour, and it was love at first sight – seeing such stunning prints and colours. After many conversations with Sally, Malcolm and Ros, my path was forged. I offered them my services as an agent. Having been in sales all my life, I knew this was a product I could promote and sell. And with my magazine industry background, I could also assist with marketing and PR. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Nottingham Road is a buzzing little village, with many Meander shops and decor stores. The Junction is also currently under refurbishment and its facelift and new restaurant will definitely be a destination for Midlands visitors. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I reconnected with a very good school friend of mine,

Heather Kelland, who owns Vintage Rose Collection. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Caversham Textiles goes hand in hand when considering decor or interior design, so teaming up with furniture and antiques was a good fit. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Afro Vintage Trading, Vintage Rose Collection and Sarah Owen (formerly Churchill House & Crystal Barn). Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Rentals are competitive. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: The Midlands Meander is such a popular destination and weekend trade is extremely busy. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Caversham Textiles still opens its Lidgetton studio every Wednesday, but for now, The A Store is the only seven-days-a-week retail outlet for Caversham Textiles. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, the website, theastore.co.za, will be fully operational next month, and we look forward to reaching an international market as well. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Caversham Textiles’s full range is my focus, and The A Store will extend the brand to include soft furnishings and a small linen range.

D

urban’s Berea is one of those places that has something for everyone, no matter what they are looking for in the way of accommodation. Gracious colonial mansions, upmarket sectional title units and apartments, as well as student accommodation are all part of the mix that makes this spot so popular. The suburb’s popularity and desirability have always driven prices and for a long time, the Berea was regarded as Durban’s most expensive suburb. Times have, however, changed and although Umhlanga and Durban North now top KwaZulu-Natal’s property price list, there are still many who are willing to pay a premium to live here. An area that once housed Durban’s elite, has now been transformed into one that offers good shopping, great views and an array of tempting restaurants. Thanks to its location it’s also close to just about everything that Durban has to offer. The nearby arterial routes make getting to the centre of town an absolute breeze, and it’s also relatively easy to hop on the

Ruth First Highway and wend your way to Durban North and beyond. The suburb is home to one of the oldest schools in the country, Durban High School (founded in 1866), as well as Durban Girls’ College, a highly regarded private institution. Other schools in the area include Berea Primary School and Maris Stella School.

I purposely chose to live on the Berea when I looked for a place to rent. It’s an exciting, vibrant area with loads to do, and makes for an excellent ‘meeting’ spot where my friends and I can hang out.
