Atholl Heights Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER
C
onsidered part of the greater Westville area, essentially Westville North, Atholl Heights is tucked between Pinetown and Westville, and bordered by Cowies Hill/Cowies Hill Park, Dawncrest, Chiltern Hills and Reservoir Hills. Atholl Heights is increasingly popular with homeowners who are moving up the property ladder and looking for an affordable family-oriented and culturally diverse community. Its other great appeal is its close proximity to freeways leading to all directions, most easily accessed from Durban to Pinetown via the M19 freeway. For those who work at Springfield Park, Umgeni Business Park, Sea Cow Lake, North Coast Road and the Nandi Drive precincts, Atholl Heights is perfectly located; likewise for the broader Pinetown region. All North Coast and South Coast locations can be easily accessed via the N3. When you get off the M19, you can turn right over the freeway to Atholl Heights into the main Dunkeld Road, or left along Rodger Sishi Road, which winds through Westville North. For your retail needs, it’s a quick ride to the Westville North shopping centre, or further, to the ever-growing Westville Mall or Westwood Mall off King Cetshwayo Highway. For greater variety, residents head to the The
Pavilion, KwaZulu-Natal’s secondlargest shopping mall, for movies, restaurants and other entertainment. Schools in Westville are among the best in the province. Many Atholl Heights homes are within the Westville Boys and Westville Girls high school zoning belts – public schools with excellent reputations. For younger children, there are also excellent primary schools nearby. For tertiary education, the Westville campus of Varsity College is easily accessible, as is the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville campus, which also has a Hindu temple and Islamic place of worship. Members of the Muslim community are drawn to Atholl Heights because it contains a Musallah. The property landscape in Atholl Heights consists largely of freestanding houses, many in excess of 1,200m2, priced between R1,5m and R2m – it’s possible to find a four-bedroom house with pool and double garage in this price band. Being elevated above Durban, some houses have views towards the city. Sectional title complexes aren’t common, and prices average in the region of R10,000/m2.

everything from tennis and soccer, to bowls and snooker; Westville Old Boys Sports Club offers soccer, rugby, hockey and baseball. Westville Athletics Club has been represented in all the major running races countrywide since 1974, and the clubhouse at its headquarters in 123 Maryvale Road address is a hive of activity. For families wanting to experience the great outdoors, Westville has the well-managed Palmiet Nature Reserve with its 15km of guided and self-guided trails, sunset and night trails, and braai and picnic sites. Jusuf Ali lives alongside his brother in Atholl Heights, and the two families visit Palmiet once a month. “We believe that being in nature is linked to health and well-being, and we want our children to enjoy this beautiful reserve and benefit from it,” says Jusuf.

The Pav on The Go app takes shopping to a new level WORDS: TIVANIA MOODLEY IMAGES: SUPPLIED
ith technology changing the way consumers shop, Yesh Harishunker identified the need for an innovative app that brings The Pavilion shopping centre directly to its customers. With the entire retail offering at your fingertips, shopping has never been easier. Yesh tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: I met my co-founder Schalk Kotze on another project we were both doing in Cape Town, and we quickly realised that his technological genius could deliver against my ambition. A number of years later we had built a very successful e-commerce shopping app to help retail stores get an e-commerce platform conveniently located on one app. The success was immediate and the rest, as they say, is history. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We chose to work with The Pavilion shopping centre, as the centre manager, Nisha Kemraj, had the vision for The Pavilion brand to take shopping convenience to the people.
management team are based at The Pavilion shopping centre, so we have access to them all the time. Being on site allows us to change and add retailers as they arise. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We operate from centre management with normal retail stores around the office. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Standard retail rental prices apply. Q: How many people use your app each day? A: The app has very high usage stats and grows daily. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, we plan to roll the app out in different cities in South Africa with different malls. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: The Mimmos gourmet chicken maestro pizza seems to be the popular favourite that gets ordered on the app frequently.
Q: How did you find your premises? A: We have our own offices in Pretoria and Durban, but we work out of The Pavilion shopping centre. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The tenants and centre

Our homes are set to become much smarter WORDS: CANDICE BOTHA IMAGE: ISTOCK
T
he connected home is a buzz phrase in design, with many new developments advertising access to smart homes. “The connected home is so much more than just internet connectivity for a few notebooks or PCs,” says Karel Leuschner, MD, Nology (a distributor of networking and VoIP hardware). The connected or smart home is a residence which has security systems, electronics, appliances, computer systems, lighting and, often, electronic blinds and curtains connected and operated from a single point – usually a touchpad, remote or customised keypad, or a mobile device. “With the phenomenal growth and proliferation of superfast broadband and Wi-Fi, many of the devices we use nowadays are connected to the internet and even communicate with each other to create a ‘smart home’,” says Leuschner. “Prices for home networking equipment have become more affordable and make it easier to extend home networks into rooms that were difficult to cover using just a single Wi-Fi router. This means that movies can be streamed in HD to any TV, photos and music shared from a single device, and home appliances such as alarm systems, washing machines and fridges ‘controlled’ from your smartphone. For example, imagine a fridge that
sends you a notification on your smartphone to let you know that you’re out of milk, or even one that is connected to an online shopping portal and orders the milk for you.” Companies like Samsung have developed hubs that will link devices and appliances in any home. The Samsung SmartThings hub will be available in South Africa by the end of the year and devices from many suppliers, not only Samsung, will be compatible with it. Unsurprisingly, it’s the security applications that have many people excited. Oceans Umhlanga will allow homeowners to control all devices remotely. They will also be able to generate a key code via an app, valid for a limited period, to allow guests controlled access – a security feature which is ideal for the holiday rental market.
