Game reserves in KwaZuluNatal Enjoy a wilderness experience like no other WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

f the three pillars of KwaZuluNatal’s tourist offering – the Berg, bush and beach – the bush, as in game reserves, is a tantalising drawcard not only because of the diversity and affordability on offer, but also because it offers an opportunity to see the province from a unique perspective. The KwaZuluNatal game reserves are adored by locals and holiday-makers alike. KwaZulu-Natal provincial game reserves fall under the protection of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. Visitors can drive themselves around and do their own catering, although some reserves have shops and/ or restaurants. Numerous others are privately owned and have game drives guided by rangers. Malaria is a factor to consider and take precautions against when visiting reserves a few hours north of Durban.
Child-friendly Many game reserves aren’t childfriendly, but some are equipped for youngsters and have created unique child-focused programmes.
&Beyond runs a superb WildChild programme, and CEO Joss Kent says it’s an ideal way for parents to get their children used to travelling. “Expose them to the people, the food, the real culture of your destination.” Ideally designed for families, the five-star Phinda Homestead – an exclusive-use house on the renowned Phinda Game Reserve – allows a family to determine their own schedule, unaffected by anybody else, while still enjoying &Beyond’s WildChild programme. It’s filled with fun, interactive activities that offer opportunities to learn and discover new experiences.

Budget
You’ll be hard-pressed to beat the prices of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial game parks. About three hours north of Durban is Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Park, with a range of accommodation. Sunset and sunrise drives with rangers leave from Mpila and Hluhluwe camps at set times (at additional cost) – most guests choose to drive themselves.
Nselweni Bush Camp has only eight fully equipped, self-catering chalets, strung along the Umfolozi River. Holiday-maker Caroline Streak, says, “We nip into the park – three hours from Durban and a million miles from civilization – once a month to restore our sanity! We ideally visit Nselweni, but Mpila is also fabulous.”

Ndaka Safari Lodge in malaria-free Nambiti Big Five Private Game Reserve welcomes children and offers comfy accommodation (including camp cots) and child-friendly meals. The large fenced-in garden provides ample space to play soccer or a game of hide and seek, the kids’ playground has a jungle gym and cool giraffe and zebra “rockers”, and the swimming pool was specifically built to accommodate children of all ages. Children can also accompany their parents on game drives – vehicles are equipped with car seats.
Mpila Tented Safari Camp is an affordable favourite. Each tent has two single beds, a deck, en-suite bathrooms and separate kitchens, all in a bush setting, with only a strand fence to keep elephants out. There’s no electricity between 10pm and 6am. Hyenas are regular visitors, but wild dogs and leopard have also been seen in the camp.

Small business boost for property sector
T
he Department of Small Business Development is collaborating with a Growthpoint Properties initiative, Property Point, to develop more small businesses in the property sector. The initiative is the first publicprivate partnership of its kind in the sector. The department has allocated a R5m grant to Property Point for a year-long small business development initiative as part of its Enterprise Incubation Programme. It will develop 16 small businesses, of which two-thirds are youth- and women-owned. Shawn Theunissen, head: Property Point and corporate social responsibility, Growthpoint, says, “Property Point’s objective has always been to contribute to South Africa’s economic growth.” He says the partnership comes at
a crucial time as South Africa deals with high unemployment and low economic growth. The programme aims to include small businesses in procurement opportunities, integrating them into private sector supply chains. Since its launch in 2008 Property Point has created 2,066 jobs and R842m in procurement opportunities for the 130 SMEs that have taken part in its two-year incubation programmes. These small businesses have reported 43% growth in revenue.

Social media is a currency of credibility. When an influencer raves about a restaurant, it’s not long before everyone’s eating there. For example, Tshepang Mollison (aka @twiggymoli) is known for posting gorgeous foodie snaps from around SA, which no doubt catalyses more business for these institutions. The same goes for areas and property trends. CRISPIN INGLIS, CO-FOUNDER, PROPERTYFOX

R
ayhaan Jhetam’s proudly South African start-up, Maverick and Jane, encompasses his passion for people and great food. His gourmet popcorn comes in a variety of delicious flavours and the company also caters for events and weddings nationwide. After a successful launch in Joburg, The Zone @ Rosebank in 2016, Rayhaan brought his business to Durban. Q: How did your business start? A: My dream of building the business from scratch started years ago, which included travelling the world in search of the best corn as well as developing my own recipes for the unique gourmet popcorn flavours. We commenced our search for an ideal location as early as 2014, when we had fully built out the concept, which took approximately two years. We opened our first store at the Zone in Rosebank in 2016, with the second store in the Gateway Theatre of Shopping and the third in the Mall of Africa, both in December 2017. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I love the mood and ambience in Gateway and my passion has always been food and people. This allows me to get the perfect balance. Furthermore, Umhlanga at large attracts a number of tourists from across the world. The casual, carefree vibe at the coast is amazing and makes for a perfect location for Maverick and Jane. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I’ve always had my heart set on opening up a store at Gateway and the management team was very
keen to offer me space. I waited patiently for almost two years until a spot became available. Once it was, the Gateway team supported me in making my dream a reality. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Gateway is such an awesome mall with cool things to do and eat, and the mall-goers are a fabulous bunch of people. There’s a great vibe about them, which creates a special energy in the air. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Several retail stores and food offerings. We’re close to Truworths, Circus Circus and Häagen-Dazs. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Normal retail rental prices. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: It’s difficult to keep track. It’s always bustling as people love popcorn. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Definitely. We have three stores to date and have a few more locations and other ideas in mind. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, we have an active Facebook page (facebook.com/ MaverickAndJane) and a website. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: The Hazelnut Rocher gourmet popcorn is our most popular flavour. The Velvet Granitas is also very popular; this is our smooth velvet ice drink spun in exotic flavours.

A new generation of retirees S
Today’s active retirees want financial and physical security, comprehensive health care and a carefree lifestyle
ixty is the new 40. We’re living much longer, we’re healthier and more active later in life. Retirement is not synonymous with old age – it’s just another phase of life with its own joys and freedoms.
What do retirees want?
Worldwide, retirees are being asked, not told, what they want. They want to be an integral part of the greater community, as participants not spectators.
WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK
Val de Vie picked up on this trend and included a retirement lifestyle village on its estate. “Including Val de Vie Evergreen in Val de Vie Estate’s diverse range of products and amenities on offer gives families the option of remaining in the Valley of Life in any stage of their lives and being part of a growing community,” says Ryk Neethling, marketing director, Val de Vie Estate. Retirees want to live independently, but want to know that they will have access to quality care when they need it. They also want to feel secure, so living within a gated community with world-class security systems provides that all-important carefree lifestyle. “At Val de Vie Evergreen, the ultimate carefree retirement lifestyle is ensured by providing retirees the option of living on an established residential development with an existing focus
on an active, outdoor lifestyle in a secure environment. A team of dedicated on-site professionals will furthermore take care of all day-today aspects of estate living and allow for residents to retire in comfort with complete peace of mind,” says Ryk.
Health care
Quality health care is a priority, and there are different care models countrywide. Increasingly, though, there’s a strong move towards an active ageing philosophy, supported by personalised home-based and primary health care. Staying at home for as long as possible is what everybody wants. Many retirement estates also offer specialised treatment, 24-hour nursing as well as recuperative and palliative care.
that owns the residence and are issued a share certificate. Internationally, the life rights model is the most popular, particularly in the US. “It’s a relatively new concept for South Africans,” says Arthur Case, CEO, Evergreen Lifestyle, “but it’s gaining traction swiftly because of its undoubted benefits for retirees. Retirees want to leave behind the maintenance and responsibilities of a house, and this model is tailormade for that. Evergreen Lifestyle Villages offer a great quality of life.”
With life rights, you don’t purchase a unit, but you and your spouse have a legal right to occupy the property for a lifetime.
Inclusive and exclusive
Retirees want to be part of a broader community, but also want to live independently in their own homes. Increasingly, a village within a village – where facilities are open to all residents and interaction between young and not so young is the natural order of the day – is proving to be the desired way of living.
Purchase models
Retirement homes worldwide offer different purchase models: sectional title, share block and life rights. With the sectional title model, the purchaser obtains ownership of a unit or residence by means of a title deed registered with the Deeds Registry. The developer carries no responsibility for the ongoing maintenance once the development has been built – that rests with the residents. In a share block retirement scheme, owners get shares in the company
