here’s nothing like getting away from it all but when you have kids, “away from it all” can mean a whole new set of challenges, but not so if you check into a family resort, where your needs are met alongside theirs. We’ve picked some of the best family resorts to take the pain out of decision making – just look, book and arrive.

Seasons Golf, Leisure and Spa, North West Province

This resort is situated in the heart of the bushveld, with 120ha of indigenous wilderness on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg Mountains. If you want to stay within the confines of your luxury resort, treat your kids to a game of putt-putt or supersized chess, or leave them at the playground while Mom relaxes with an awardwinning spa treatment and Dad indulges in a round of golf, or head out to nearby Hartbeespoort. The resort’s restaurant caters to all ages, or drive down to The Windmill for rustic Dutch food next to the dam.

aha Alpine Heath Resort, KwaZulu-Natal

Surrounded by the majestic Drakensberg range, this four-star mountain village allows families to explore their surroundings with its stunning, self-catering, A-frame accommodation or luxury hotel rooms as a home base. Parents and children alike can enjoy fishing and hiking, or immerse themselves in nature while horse riding, with specific trails for every age. The resort also offers a variety of ball sports including miniature golf, tennis, volleyball and squash.

SUN CITY

PUBLISHED BY TIMES MEDIA PROPERTY PUBLISHING 1st Floor, Block H, Sable Square cnr Bosmansdam and Ratanga Roads Milnerton, Cape Town

Monkey Valley Resort, Western Cape Nestled within the Milkwood forest at the foot of Chapman’s Peak with an unrivalled view, is Monkey Valley Resort.

With direct walking access to the beach and lagoons, you can enjoy horse rides along the shore, watch whales from May to November, and walk to a shipwreck where treasure hunts, shipwreck parties and teambuilding events are held. You can also experience the Chapman’s Peak mountains with mountain biking and hiking. While the kids play, parents can unwind in the quaint treetop pub, or indulge in a herbal sauna or in-room massage, aromatherapy or reflexology.

Umngazi River Lodge, Eastern Cape

Tucked away on the Wild Coast, in the heart of Pondoland, and encompassed by a rocky coastline, indigenous forests, secluded coves and breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, lies this award-winning resort. Spend some family time with games on the grass, fishing expeditions and swimming in the river, or take a boat ride to the opposite bank where you can climb the sand dunes to the main beach. You can also leave your kids with the caretakers, in activity rooms or at the elaborate playground and large splash pool while you immerse yourself in the deep relaxation that the spa has to offer.

The Kingdom Resort, North West Province

Situated next to the Pilanesberg

National Park and a stone’s throw away from some of the most spectacular landscapes, is the Kingdom Resort. Make the most of the sunny Pilanesberg climate at the Splash Kingdom Waterpark or explore the beautiful national park with quad bikes. Kids can release all their pent-up energy on the jungle gym and trampoline, while parents experience bliss at the day spa or have a drink at the Acacia Terrace Cafe. Some quality family time can be spent playing a few rounds of adventure golf, volleyball or watching a movie at the resort’s outdoor cinema. Or take the adrenalin up a notch with the jumping pillow, rock-climbing wall and archery. Sun City is a short drive away, as well as other attractions like the Predator World, Hot Air Balloon Safari and the Pilanesberg National Park itself.

The Willows Holiday Resort, Eastern Cape

Only 15km away from the beachfront in PE, this resort has been a firm favourite among families in the Eastern Cape. It offers three-star graded self-catering units, a large caravan park, as well as private camping sites. Popular with fishermen due to its rugged, rocky outcrops, The Willows also has rock pools for children. The small private beaches at the resort are perfect for endless days in the sun and playing in the water. The resort offers plenty of other activities to keep adults and kids preoccupied, including putt-putt and a swimming pool.

My business neighbourhood Laced is adding a little something extra to tired, old sneakers WORDS: TIVANIA MOODLEY

W

hat began as an experimentation to prolong the wear of sneakers, has evolved into a full-on sneaker culture. The customisation of sneakers has become a way of reflecting an individual’s taste and personality. Dhiantha Achary discovered this unique shoe concept to create a personal flair for sneaker lovers. She started her business, Laced, in August 2015, offering clients the opportunity to personalise their trusted sneaker brands to fit their unique personality. Q: How did your business start? A: I am also an architect and have always been creative. The shoes were a way for me to earn a little extra cash while doing my architectural internship. The concept really resonated

with a lot of people and soon established itself as something more than purely a hobby. Markets and public events were real stepping stones for the growth of my business, but due to the nature of the product being bespoke and purpose made, I’ve never felt the need to set up formal premises, which is why working from home has always suited my business model. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I chose to work from home due to the nature of my product. Each piece is completely purpose made, so I don’t have a whole lot of stock at any given time to fill up a shop. I live in Westville, which is pretty central and makes deliveries and pickups fairly easy. Q: How did you find your premises? A: Setting up shop for me was as simple as finding a space to work in. I have a small studio where I do my creative work which is time consuming. I can pretty much work from anywhere in the house

considering how small the products are. I mostly just need decent lighting and prefer to work during the day or with a daylight bulb. Q: Why are they ideally suited to your business? A: I’ve ended up working odd hours, often well into the night and on weekends. Working from home gives me full control of my time. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: I live in a residential area, so my neighbours are homeowners. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: One of the biggest benefits of working from home is not having to pay rent. It maximises my profits. To rent a room within someone’s property for business purposes would probably cost about R4,000 per month.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: It’s not feasible for my current business model to find a permanent location right now. I do plan on expanding my online presence as well as frequenting more events and markets, like I Heart Market, Westville Night Market, the Wonder Market as well as First Thursdays. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: I have a Facebook page (@LACEDSA), Instagram account (@laceddsgn) and a website and online store in the pipeline. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: W hile I do customise a variety of items, the original customised sneakers have remained a firm favourite of my clients.

SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: I have approximately 10 to 15 enquiries per day and my turnover is three sneakers per week.

Retiring to the coast There are many reasons why retiring to the coast appeals. Feedback from property professionals puts the industry in a strong position to know what those factors are. WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK

F

or many, retiring to the coast is the ultimate dream, says Mandy Testa, area specialist, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty in KwaZulu-Natal’s Durban North and Umhlanga. “The coastal lifestyle offers a slower pace and the constant feeling of being on holiday.” Traditionally, the idea of moving to the coast has been synonymous with slowing down and peace and quiet, says Steve Thomas, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty franchise manager in False Bay and Noordhoek, “Not all retirees seek a coastal lifestyle, but the common denominator among all is tranquillity which, living ocean side with all its various facets, is a given.” Coastal living implies space for active pursuits, whether it’s fishing, walking or swimming, and it’s in a great environment.

Affordability?

Just Property area franchisee Lawrence Homan, says, “The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is particularly affordable. Retirees purchase houses there now, rent them out and in about 10 to 15 years, renovate and retire there.” Another modus operandi is to purchase an interim property to live in, like an apartment, while on the often long

waiting list for a retirement unit. Every coastline has a more affordable belt, so with the rise in retiree developments, there’s something for everyone. Steve Neufeld, manager principal, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty in Plettenberg Bay, says Plett is especially popular with retirees, “Over 300 days of sunshine per annum, beautiful natural surroundings and stunning beaches perfect for long walks.” Regarding prices, he adds, “Plett may be pricey in relation to national averages, but it’s relatively cheap in comparison to Cape Town. It depends where you buy – you can still purchase plots in upmarket gated estates for around R300,000, though not many.” Steve Thomas, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty franchise manager in False Bay and Noordhoek, acknowledges that some suburbs along False Bay can be more expensive, “but in Muizenberg, one can still buy property for between R750,000 and R950,000 with an Indian Ocean view”.

Multigenerational living

Retiree components within established coastal gated estates are on the up. Stephen Murray, Pam Golding Properties area principal based in

George, says, “We have a number of gated estate developments that have made provision for retirement developments within their estates. These estates are multigenerational and therefore enable parents (of retirement age) and children to live securely within close proximity of each other.”

Investment

Investing in a coastal retirement scenario is gaining ground, as children invest for parents and retirees invest early for later years. Dr Andrew Golding, chief executive, Pam Golding Property group, says, “With people living longer and continuing to lead active lifestyles well into their senior years, those with foresight are planning ahead and investing in homes for their retirement at an earlier age rather than wait for actual retirement.” Sally Cameron, Pam Golding Properties’ principal at KwaZuluNatal’s Mount Edgecombe, adds, “The investment aspect is a very appealing drawcard for buyers, who prefer to see the benefits of capital growth in their property acquisition, as well as the potential to let out the property prior to occupation, thereby achieving rental income.”
