Owned, nurtured and developed by the Senekal family, Zimanga Private Game Reserve is set in the 67km 2 Zululand bushveld, fever-tree forests and rolling hills – it’s also bisected by the Mkuze River and home to a wide variety of animals and birds. Photographic safaris take on a new meaning here, and Zimanga has six world-class photographic hides. They include two bird-bath or reflection hides, ideal for smallbird photography; the larger lagoon hide for water birds and crocodiles in the summer season; the Umgodi Overnight Hide, custom-designed for large-mammal photography, and the mobile bee-eater hide which can be placed close to the nesting site of white-fronted bee-eaters. Vehicle safaris offer unparalleled opportunities for photography of African wildlife like wild dogs and lions. Experienced photographers and newbies all have their place! Until recently, accommodation was in the exclusive-use homestead for seven guests, who are provided with a vehicle, guide and meals by the in-house chef. Zimanga Main Lodge has just opened and sleeps 12 guests in six luxury double suites. Or, stay the night in Umgodi Hide.

Perched on a ridge at the head of a valley in the Umkomaas river system, the 20-year-old Buddhist Retreat Centre looks out on a vista of indigenous valleys, forests and rolling hills. Most weekends, the centre holds retreats by experts or enthusiasts on a wide range of subjects – from delightfully escapist topics or

experiences to full silence, or intense, probing topics. One weekend can be child-centric kite flying, learning vegetarian cookery, bird watching, indigenous gardening, writing a journal, exploring Buddhism or meditation or dealing with stress and anxiety. During the week, it’s possible to spend non-structured time there, and still enjoy optional meditation, chi kung, meals or walks and the joy of the surrounds – the ideal environment to clear your head and defrag… and don’t miss the wonderful maze. Accommodation varies from simple upwards, but the focus is not on plush living, but on the authenticity of the experience. Some retreats are held in complete silence, others with short periods of silence; some are directed at families and children, others are not suitable. CNN featured the BRC as one of the 10 finest meditation centres in the world.

The art of sleep Ammazulu African Palace is unique luxury accommodation – a five-star guest house and bed and breakfast – on the edge of the Kloof Gorge and Krantzkloof Nature Reserve. A truly spectacular boutique hotel in which to relax and unwind, particularly if you’re ensconced on the private balcony of the presidential suite with its breathtaking views and zebra wandering below. The palace was the vision of Durban artist Peter Amm, who used his entire collection of Zulu art and crafts, incorporated into over 40 beaded columns of exquisite beauty. The elaborately crafted and decorated walkways, halls and bedrooms are all adorned with beadwork and African art, artefacts and statues, specifically covering parts of KwaZulu-Natal history. The palace’s valuable artwork is everywhere and very accessible, so they have a policy of no children under age 14.

My business neighbourhood Lineage Coffee brings its world-class coffee experience to the Midlands WORDS: TIVANIA MOODLEY

IMAGE: SUPPLIED

C

offee connoisseurs will attest to the fact that a perfectly brewed cup of coffee is the only way to start the morning. Craig Charity was one such connoisseur who wanted to share his passion for coffee and decided to form the Lineage Coffee brand. They’ve extended their coffee offering to the Midlands with their new shop in Nottingham Road. Craig tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: Lineage started in 2012 as a way for me to share my coffee passion with people. Often people only experience coffee in a cup, but there is so much that happens before that cup is made that people miss out on. We try to showcase the many hands that have made this beverage possible. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: A s a family, we’ve often chosen Nottingham Road as the area of choice to get away. I make a trip up there every January where I spend about three days by myself and plan for the year. When I was up

there in January last year, I met with Ian Morris, the owner of the Sherwood Centre, and we started chatting about coffee in general. What began as a quick stop to get supplies, turned out to be a longer one about putting a Lineage Coffee shop in the centre. Q: How did you find your premises? A: T he building that I am in at the Sherwood Centre was purposebuilt for Lineage Coffee. Jeremy Steere and the International Trend Institute worked with Ian and me to create a space for people to do life together. Q: Why are they ideally suited to your business? A: Ian and I had the same vision to create a space that people would enjoy and relax in. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Lime and Roses, Lifestyle Images, Douchka, and Stationary4U. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Rental prices are very reasonable at the moment, but I think this area will become a lot busier in future which could impact rental and sale prices.

Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: We have only been open for a few months but we see about 70 to 100 people a day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Not at the moment, we are just enjoying the space as it is. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We are busy developing an online store which will be ready before Christmas, but have an active website and Facebook page (@lineagecoffee). Q: What’s your most popular item? A: The double-shot Cafe Latte. It’s a lovely balance of espresso and milk. The origin of our coffee changes every few weeks, so the flavour of the drink changes, but people love that.

How much care is enough? With the rise in retirement development numbers, innovative models are being introduced to spread the financial load of care facilities WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK

O

n the list of must-haves for any retiree will always be on-site care facilities. Retirees need to ask the right questions, and ensure they’re getting what they need… and are paying for.

In-home care

Generally speaking, the medical care, nursing staff and management are outsourced to professional service providers such as MyCare and TotalCare, but equally, there’s a greater focus on in-home care. It’s not only believed to be a healthier option for residents to remain in their homes while cared for – retaining that all-important independence – but it’s obviously less costly for the developer and therefore the residents. Leigh-Anne Aitken is a director at MyCare and is well aware of the care concerns of retirees, in particular as to when or whether care facilities will be built. “We don’t believe in a frail-care centre per se, but the option to have home-based care, overseen by a registered nurse based in the care centre. The care centre is much smaller than traditional frail care, but we have doctor’s consulting rooms, where, for example, an audiologist visits one day a week.”

Accessible medical facilities for all

It’s also making good financial sense for developments to have on-site medical facilities which are available to those outside of the retirement development. It’s impossible to predict the care needs of residents at any one time, so allowing others to access the facilities – while prioritising residents’ care – certainly spreads the financial load.

Full care

And then there are developments which provide full medical care. Here you’ll get everything from frail-care units and assisted-living units, to specialised Alzheimer and dementia care and nurses on 24-hour call. For many retirement villages, the ability for a retiree to be able to call for medical assistance is standard.

Preventative health care

For many, health-promoting facilities are important. Whether it’s long boardwalks through nature, cycling and hiking routes, yoga, gym or swimming pools – these matter. Particularly today, when developments are billed for over 50s and over 55s, who are relatively young people with many years of good health ahead of them – they want facilities in which to ensure that longevity.
