Holiday down South Discover hidden gems along KZN’s beautiful coastline WORDS: MEGAN DEANE

S

tarting from Amanzimtoti and stretching all the way through to Port Edward, the South Coast is known for its sunny weather, popular beaches and endless coastal holiday destinations. We bring you a few of the amazing places you can explore along this relaxed coastal region of KwaZulu-Natal.

Port Shepstone

A hidden gem, Mantis and Moon Backpackers Lodge is ideal for nature lovers or as a yoga retreat. Set in a private jungle, close to the beach, you have the choice of staying in a tree house cabin, glass cabin or even a tipi. For the adventurous, Lake Eland Game Reserve and Oribi Gorge offer incredible outdoor experiences. Lake Eland is rustic, providing camping or log cabin accommodation overlooking a dam. View game, hike or mountain bike, and take on Africa’s longest zip-line tour. Orbi Gorge is great for staying over or visiting for the day.

Umzumbe

Surrounded by indigenous coastal vegetation and boasting beautiful sea views, Pumula Beach Hotel was awarded Trip Advisor’s 2016 Travellers’ Choice Award. Enjoy endless activities at the beach, an exclusive swimming pool, or a hiking trail adventure close by. Port Edward

I regularly visit The Pont, whether for a getaway or a day trip. It’s looking great after they’ve upgraded their facilities and is generally a perfect place to enjoy the outdoors.

There is so much to choose from when you reach Port Edward. Looking for a water sports getaway? A popular choice for water lovers is The Pont, which is ideal for boating, jet-skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, canoeing or fishing. “I regularly visit The Pont, whether for a getaway or a day trip. It’s looking great after they’ve upgraded their facilities and is generally a perfect place to enjoy the outdoors,” says visitor Shane Swan.

SHANE SWAN, VISITOR

Another popular holiday spot is the Wild Coast Sun, which has hotel accommodation and caters for everyone. There are exciting water sports, a fun water park, a casino, beautiful golf course and fun entertainment and eating spots for the whole family.

BEST IN FOOD: • Mac Banana – Port Edward • The Fish Eagle Restaurant – Port Edward • The Waffle House – Margate • Enzo Pizzeria Trattoria – Scottburgh • The View – Amanzimtoti

Pumula Beach Hotel will be over 90% full for the upcoming Christmas holidays… simply because it is one of the best venues around for a totally familyorientated South Coast beach holiday

THINGS TO DO: • Explore the many beautiful beaches. • Go for a coffee tour at Beaver Creek Coffee Farm. • Take the family to the Wild Waves Water Park at the Wild Coast Sun. • Enjoy game viewing, hiking, mountain biking and zip-lining. • Play a game of golf at one of the choice golf courses.

A

s the tourists flood into South Africa, their comprehensive itineraries remind us of all the things we take for granted. Sometimes it’s good to take a step back and appreciate what we have and become tourists in our own cities. And what better time than in summer?

KwaZulu-Natal

• The Durban Botanic Gardens

is Durban’s oldest public institution, as well as Africa’s oldest botanical gardens. Covering 15ha and filled with astounding flora such as cycads, orchids and bromeliads, these gardens are always worth a visit. • Umgeni River Bird Park is responsible for breeding 17 of the 24 threatened bird species it houses. When visiting, try to check out the Free Flight Bird Show, the park’s main attraction. • Visit Moses Mabhida Stadium: arguably the coolest stadium to come out of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. • The Midlands Meander is one of SA’s largest arts and crafts routes, and the perfect way to enjoy the beauty of KZN.

Gauteng

• Visit The Cradle of Humankind

aka Maropeng. Whether you explore the Sterkfontein

Cape Town

• The V&A Waterfront is a major

tourist hot spot. With many attractions to choose from, the Two Oceans Aquarium is a perennial favourite. • Table Mountain is a natural wonder of the world and Cape Town’s most iconic landmark. • Kirstenbosch is one of South Africa’s most popular botanical gardens. It is nestled at the foot of Table Mountain and encompasses five of the six different biomes of South Africa.

PROTECT YOUR EYES: While exploring your city this summer, be sure to protect your eyes against the sun’s harmful UV rays. Here are two reasons to wear sunglasses: 1. With the great technological advances in lens design, almost all sunglasses protect against UV damage. 2. As children spend most of their time outdoors, they are at high risk of UV damage. This is why they should always wear sunglasses when out in the sun. Visit your nearest Spec-Savers (specsavers.co.za) to find the perfect pair for you.

My business neighbourhood Creating beautiful spaces and surroundings that inspire WORDS: MEGAN DEANE

IMAGE: SUPPLIED

K

ari McDonagh’s love for interior design started 15 years ago when she moved into her first apartment and renovated it. She has since turned her hobby into a fully operational business. Q: How did your business start? A: It started as a hobby; I just love finding old gems and renovating them back to life. I helped friends and family with decor projects and repurposing old furniture in my spare time. After travelling and working all over the world, in very different industries, last year I decided to finally come home and get into decor again. Word of mouth has been amazing, and over the past year my passion has started to slowly grow into a little business. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: With all the development and growth happening along the North Coast, it seemed like a perfect fit. I decided on Ballito because of its affordability, incredible lifestyle on offer and the great friendly and relaxed environment.

Q: How did you find your premises? A: I found my premises after looking for a few months. I focused my search within the Umhlanga to Ballito areas. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Due to the massive growth that’s taking place between Umhlanga and Ballito, it’s ideally suited to be based in Ballito as I’m in the hub of the action and close to clients. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: My neighbours vary considerably. There are doctors, clothing shops and food stores all within a very short distance from me. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: It is really competitive; there are also some awesome new property spaces out there.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I always have plans for doing more and expanding. Hopefully one day soon I will be able to implement one or two of these schemes I have brewing. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: So much new business is created through my online presence, especially with my online portfolio. I find it is a really powerful way of getting my brand out there. Q: What’s your most popular package? A: T he most used service is the residential and corporate interior decor service – bespoke designs and project management. The Home Staging service is also growing.

SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: What is your business footprint? A: Due to working so closely with each client, the business doesn’t have mass traffic. I offer a more bespoke personal service.

GLASS CAN COMPLEMENT A SMART HOME ENVIRONMENT: Modern building materials can also increase a home’s functionality and return on investment. • Solar control: Double glazing, as is the case with PG SmartGlass X2, improves insulation by up to 70%. In summer, natural light is allowed in – creating a more airy interior space – while 66% of heat from direct sunlight is repelled, cooling a house. In winter, heat is kept in the home by the superior insulation performance, maintaining its warmth. This reduces the need for airconditioning and heating systems, in turn decreasing energy costs. • UV protection: Fabrics such as curtains and furniture tend to fade and deteriorate in the sun. PG SmartGlass X2 filters up to 99% of UV rays. • Sound insulation: Noise bounces back towards its source or is absorbed within the glass, creating a calmer interior space. Insulation is further improved with double glazing. • Improved safety: PG SmartGlass X2 can be laminated in order to increase home security, making it trickier for intruders to gain entry.

Technology leap Smart homes have become an integral part of life, increasing your home’s IQ and its value WORDS: JOCELYN WARRINGTON & SUPPLIED

ome automation has taken a significant technological leap forward over the last few years. Today’s wireless networks and smart devices allow users to take home control to the next level: high-tech homes can be tuned in to switch on lights and stream your favourite music when you’re on your way back from work. They can be automated to run the washing machine, clean the dishes and water the garden at optimal times. And the reasons for installing smart home technologies have become broader, too. Green buildings capable of significantly reducing energy and water consumption are finally a reality – it is in the eco-efficiency arena that the most exciting developments in home automation are taking place. According to Brad Sale, owner of residential automation systems provider Elas Africa, smart appliances coordinate with smart meters, thereby reducing overall energy consumption. This may include smart lighting to control illumination and water-consumption reduction through sensor taps and plant watering systems.

Sale says that smart homes also allow for integration with smart power grids – turning on the geyser, operating the dishwasher or washing machine, or cooling the fridge or freezer. “In this way, smart home automation can contribute to significant energy savings without impacting the comfort levels of residents.”
