Camping and caravanning in KZN We bring you a few options to help you explore the area's beautiful natural surroundings WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGES: SUPPLIED, GRANT PITCHER, WOLF AVNI, ALEXANDER SMITH & ISTOCK

K

waZulu-Natal has a diverse range of camping and caravanning sites. This is why caravan clubs and organisations are alive and well in the area. With a year-round climate conducive to outdoor activities, there’s a long list of easy-to-access hot spots perfect for a quick weekend trip or a longer sojourn.

Hidden gems

With the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park (a Unesco World Heritage Site) as its natural backdrop, Cobham offers the perfect ‘Berg gateway. Near Himeville, Cobham is 28km from the world-renowned Amphitheatre, and just north of Cobham you’ll find the start of the Giant’s Cup Hiking Trail. It’s a little rustic, with informal sites and limited ablutions, but the location is breathtaking. Another gem is the Mahai Campsite in the Northern Drakensberg,

Family-friendly Unpretentious and well positioned, the Fairhills Caravan Park and Camping Ground close to Ramsgate on the Hibiscus Coast has 44 owner-run sites 1,5km from the Blue Flag Ramsgate Beach, and you’re guaranteed warm hospitality and personalised attention. It’s popular as a retreat for pensioners in winter and the owner offers great Easter and sardine-run specials and attractive out-of-season rates. Amenities include a pool, kids’ TV room, library, a coastal forest nature trail, bird-watching and surf and deep-sea fishing charters close by.

Mac Nicol’s Caravan Resort in Bazley Beach, South Coast, is child- and pet-friendly and has something for everyone. There’s canoeing, fishing and sunset cruising on the Ifafa Lagoon. You can also swim in the two heated pools, walk along Bazley Beach or play volleyball. Alternatively, you can kick back and watch the dolphins playing in the waves. It’s also a good base for hiking and cycling the Mpihti trail area. Mac Nicol’s is a 90km drive from Durban, and if you’re not in the mood to set up the caravan, you can opt for one of eight well-appointed log cabins.

There’s nothing quite like camping in a game reserve! While sleeping in a tent inevitably makes one feel closer to nature, knowing that a rhino could be right outside your ‘window’ is particularly humbling.

majestically situated at the foot of the Amphitheatre. It has 120 large, level sites set among established trees. Beautifully maintained, with good security and ample ablutions, it’s great value for money and has that perfect balance between serenity and activity. You can go on horseback rides, hike the trails, explore the gorge, fish in the mountain stream or kick back and just enjoy the sunsets behind the imposing mountains.

R60m sold in 42 seconds Country’s first residential online sales launch sees exceptional buyer interest in new development WORDS: CANDICE BOTHA

IMAGE: SUPPLIED

S

elling property is moving with the times, with innovative sales approaches being launched, including pre-registration online, blind bidding and launch days where prospective buyers queue for hours to secure their preferred site or unit. Summer Park Umhlanga, a new development in Umhlanga, took a bold approach and recently conducted South Africa’s first residential online sales launch, making the purchasing process faster and more convenient than ever before. “Having conducted many sales launches, we decided to up the ante from our traditional queuing processes to manage the first residential online sales launch in South Africa,” said Stefan Botha, director, Rainmaker Marketing. “In terms of its offering and pricing, Summer Park Umhlanga was the perfect product to initiate this new approach where, for the first time ever, those interested in purchasing within (the development) were able to do so from the comfort of their

own homes by simply clicking a button, and we’ve never experienced the rush we had on launch day.” A whopping R60m was sold in 42 seconds from the start of the launch. Positioned from R950,000, this contemporary development offers new-age studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments within the Parkside area of Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre. “Having received over 1,500 registrations for Summer Park Umhlanga within the first week, and fitting with the new-age product offering, the online sales launch allowed the sales process to be seamless, effortless, convenient and quick. This approach performed phenomenally, not only showing the online approach was a success, but it’s also a testament to the demand Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre is experiencing, the desirable price point for Summer Park Umhlanga and the need for more modern residential developments in this node,” said Botha.
