Richards Bay Here’s what’s happening in property in the area
WORDS: ANDRÉ FIORE IMAGES: SUPPLIED, GREG GROENEWALD, TRANSNET NATIONAL PORTS AUTHORITY & ANDRE MEYER FOR THE KING CETSHWAYO DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY
We love the lifestyle that coastal living offers. Richards Bay is big enough to cater for all our needs and small enough not to have big city issues like traffic congestion. ELAINE CHETTY, RESIDENT
Richards Bay’s port, which was established about 40 years ago, transformed the town from a small fishing village into a dynamic industrial city. With one of the largest coal export terminals in the world, the town is often overlooked by visitors who simply bypass it en route further north.
STAY OVER: • Protea Hotel Waterfront Richards Bay • Mzingazi Waterfront Village • Premier Hotel The Richards • Imvubu Lodge • Aristo Manor • The Ridge Guesthouse
However, with easy access to the N2 and many pleasant surprises, Richards Bay is increasingly becoming a popular holiday destination, especially for visitors from Gauteng, due to its relative proximity, year-round summer climate, warm waters, beautiful scenery and many leisure offerings.

ituated on the 30km2 lagoon of the Mhlathuze River, giving it one of the country’s largest harbours, Richards Bay lies almost halfway between Durban and Kosi Bay.

• Walk, picnic, braai or play sport on the Blue Flag Alkantstrand Beach. • Explore the many biking and hiking trails nearby. • Shop at the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre. • Enjoy a variety of water sports at Tuzi Gazi Waterfront. • Play a round of golf at the Richards Bay Country Club.
Despite its mining operations, Richards Bay has some of the most spectacular wetland scenery and unspoilt beaches on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. Its sandbanks, mudflats, extensive mangroves, freshwater pans and forest areas are treasured by nature lovers and birders alike. “The things we love most about Richards Bay are the beaches, the water sports (swimming, surfing, paddling and fishing) and the fabulous game reserves on our doorstep as well as the
warm, friendly people and stunning year-round climate,” says resident Elaine Chetty. Tourism doesn’t stop with the natural offerings. Richards Bay has long marketed its niche by offering tours of industrial plants, mines and other operations to business and leisure visitors. Food and accommodation are of a high standard and the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront is sure to impress. For those who live in Richards Bay, and don’t have to deal with the stresses of big city life, the general consensus is: “We’re not leaving anytime soon!” Property prices have appreciated over the last decade, with an average increase of about 8% over the last five years. The oldest part of town, Meerensee, is the highest-priced residential suburb in Richards Bay and is always popular, but other areas also offer good investment opportunities close to good schools, shops and the CBD. Although some of the projects planned for the port are not materialising as quickly as hoped, there is talk of a new dry dock facility, a new container terminal and a liquefied petroleum gas terminal. Residents say the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone is bringing much-needed industry into the town.

About us Ours Is a story steeped in tribute to Neapolitan-style pizza originating in Naples more than 200 years ago. The guidelines are simple and elegant – basic, fresh ingredients including hand–kneaded dough, mozzarella cheese, basil and olive oil. Neapolitan-style pizzas are noticeably smaller than modern-sized pizzas and baked in wood-fired ovens of exceptional
heat for a very short time. The result – a delicately light and crisp base at the edges with deliciously saucy centre. While paying faithful homage to the original, we remain certain our Neapolitan-inspired Casa Bella signature pizzas, pasta and grills will continue to delight for hundreds of years to come.

My business J neighbourhood Just Peachy SA shows that designer cakes and pastries are no passing fad WORDS: TIVANIA MOODLEY IMAGES: SUPPLIED
ust Peachy SA is more than just a patisserie; it’s a place where love is the foundation from which the business operates. Tyler Duncan and Michael Joubert combined their love for each other and their passion for baking to create a business that caters to the exclusive tastes of every customer. We chat with Tyler to find out more. Q: How did your business start? A: Michael and I have been a couple since 2014 and became business partners in 2015. We started with a food trailer and then this year we moved into a permanent location. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Our shop is located at 6 Station Drive, at The Warehouse, which has the perfect ambience for a patisserie. Q: How did you find your premises? A: Michael is the son of the designer and owner of Catori, which is also part of the same precinct. We were in and out of the stores there and came across The Warehouse and fell in love with the space. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It’s the perfect size and openplan, so people can see us baking and decorating. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Momenti Artisan Gelato, serving authentic, handcrafted gelato
and vegan sorbet, and Not Made in China and Karma Free Kitchen, which sells delicious vegan food. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in the area? A: T he rental prices are fairly reasonable. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: We have some quiet days and then during events we can have a few hundred customers a day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We hope to expand and grow our business into a cake-styling studio. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We’re quite active on social media. We post all our work, from wedding and birthday cakes to desserts and our shop goodies, on our Facebook page (facebook.com/ JustPeachySA), and on Instagram (@justpeachy_patisserie). Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our chocolate sponge and carrot cakes are definitely favourites. Dessert-wise, the creme brulee and our cake pops are popular.

Estate living on the North Coast Demand for residential estates is on the rise, particularly on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast WORDS & IMAGES: SUPPLIED
T
he economy of the North Coast has changed significantly over the past 10 years. The quality and prevalence of our large gated estates have driven over R2,5bn in sales since 2012. With security as a non-negotiable factor, estate living has increased in popularity and the North Coast has been well placed to take advantage of this. Demand for land in local estates is at an all-time high, with prices in some cases increasing monthly. Simbithi Eco-Estate and Dunkirk Estate have both sold out of developer stock, Zimbali Coastal Resort and Estate and Brettenwood Coastal Estate are left with only a handful of sites and Palm Lakes Family Estate is thriving in this sweet spot of the market. The average price of a home on an estate has risen significantly. Emphasising this point, Brettenwood land has increased by 50% in the last two years. This certainly illustrates the investor confidence in the region. Looking at the three major regions – Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal – house prices in KwaZulu-Natal have outperformed the rest in recent
concerns, whether it’s wanting to be a golf cart ride away from a golf course or being a bike ride away from a retirement village. Some people want their dream family home and others want to downscale. Estates offer a variety of home packages to suit your needs and a lifestyle where privacy, protection and prestige are of paramount importance.
months. This can be attributed to factors such as the lifestyle offering and value proposition, the spatial distribution of economic nodes (these serve to lessen congestion) and the severe stock shortage experienced. Growth drivers on the North Coast • The middle class is flocking into areas from Westville to Durban North to take advantage of the great schools located there. The existing homeowners are seeing the true value of their properties and are making their way up the N2 to find their little piece of paradise on the North Coast instead. The five major estates on the North Coast dominate 70% of the market in the area. • New buyers have had enough of crime and fear living in a stand-alone home. They want to move into an estate that offers a safe, unique lifestyle. Estate living addresses all these needs. With state-of-the-art security systems being constantly monitored and upgraded, you can sleep in peace knowing that you and your family are safe.
Peter Cameron, Home and Country sales director for Brettenwood Coastal Estate, says, “I’m often asked what the difference is between all the estates on the North Coast and my answer is always the same: ‘Do you like chocolate, vanilla or strawberry?’ All of the estates in the area are of the highest standard; you just have to find the one that resonates with you and your family’s needs.”
• Estates offer a unique lifestyle that speaks to your family dynamic and
