I

f you squint, you could be looking at Lake Como – and George Clooney, in relaxed linen, could be eating the filetto di peperoncino at a table near you. That’s if it’s a flat-sea day and the Indian Ocean resembles your welcoming focaccia. The heavenly view of the ocean and subtle food flavours evoke a poem by Helen Moffett: “across a sea shouting blue… a red container ship passes as if drawn by a string… and view splice, and for a slice… I’m jolted into unexpected joy”. Sitting at Bel Punto restaurant on a summer’s day enjoying the soft sensation of the other-worldly risotto con gamberi had this sublime, poetic effect. The meal is light and layered with rich cream, Italian tomatoes, perfumed wine and oceanfresh prawns with Arborio rice.

M

y perception has always been that art is expensive and unattainable. But just in time to debunk this, ArtSpace Durban opened its 13th Annual Affordable Art Show at the start of the week. Running until Saturday, 16 January, this is definitely something to take a look at if you’re interested in art. Besides being a popular gallery with a wide range of fine art, it has once again set the sale price maximum at R3,500. How clever to make it more affordable. What’s more, once you’ve bought your selected artwork, you can pay and take it home with you straight away! To me, that’s putting a whole new spin on making art accessible too. This particular collection also boasts the works of one of our writers, Anne Schauffer (image above). Maybe it’s time to start your collection if you haven’t already?

The last time I had such a jolt of joy over a risotto was at Haute Cabrière Cellar Restaurant on its Franschhoek wine estate sampling the delish mushroom risotto. I would love to try a refreshing lemon risotto on this menu, perhaps as a summer special. I think such a dish would make Anna Del Conte’s heart sing, as does the restaurant’s melanzane alla parmigiana for me. To invoke a long, lazy lunch in Naples we shared the melanzane alla parmigiana. The chef captured the essence of Mediterranean magic with his heavenly aubergines. Despite Parmesan being dubbed the soul of this dish, the chef went easy on the mozzarella without losing that delicate melt-in-the-mouth result.

We drank refreshing ginger berry fizz with lashings of fresh ginger, slices of oranges and shaken with cranberry juice. This is a family-run, authentic Italian restaurant owned by lovely Italians. Bel Punto is certainly up there with some of the great South African restaurants. Highly recommend.

I

meander into Mayfair Cafe on a strange day. It’s been a busy one that’s left my mind frazzled. I’m definitely in the mood for good coffee and a great meal to put my head straight. Mayfair Cafe has a friendly vibe to it that’s not disjointed or stuffy, but casual and sincere in the way that you need on a day that’s been too loud and too busy. After finishing up some grocery shopping, the comfortable ambience settles my soul into my seat as I drink up and soak in a little relaxation.

Not just another coffee shop

I used to write it off as just another coffee shop, but I’m happy to say I was truly mistaken. Instead, Mayfair Cafe is an example to others. I’m not left alone wondering where a waitress is – the service is swift and pleasant. The menu, while quite varied, awakens the hidden food critic in me and pretty soon I’m ordering the poached eggs on rye that I’ve heard others talk about. They were completely on the money – this is the late breakfast that I needed. I ended it off with a lemon meringue tart that was so good I thought my mother-in-law had made it.

A sweet surprise

To my surprise, my bill doesn’t break the bank. Mayfair Cafe’s prices rest in that sweet spot between affordable and “really? Is that all?” so my family best get used to coming here often, because this is a breakfast we can most definitely afford to attend more regularly.

Dinner, anyone?

Mayfair Cafe is not just a daytime coffee spot that’s conveniently close to the important amenities in Durban North. At night, it opens for dinner, and what a dinner service it seems to be. I’ve not yet had the pleasure of dining there (I blame it on our family’s crazy schedule), but after peeking at photos posted on the cafe’s Facebook page, we’ll be stopping in over the school holidays for sure.

henever there’s an extraordinary emergency in the Durban North area, Gordon Reid is there. He’s helped plane crash victims to safety and recently raised the alarm and ferried guests to safety when a suite at a local hotel caught alight. When he’s not wearing his invisible cape, Gords, as he’s known to his friends, is a devoted husband and father, and he heads up a busy print business, MG Print Services. He also regularly dons a cow suit to participate in sporting events that raise funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC) and actively supports other charitable causes. We found out more about what he gets up to. Q: How does a superhero do it all? A: The secret is that you can only do one thing at a time. Durban certainly isn’t a sleepy little hollow anymore, there is big business here and there are massive deals being done all the time. Q: What charitable causes are you involved in? A: Supporting and promoting CHOC is so important. In First World

countries the survival rate of kids with cancer is 8/10 and in Third World countries it’s 2/10. We have to create awareness because this leads to early diagnosis, which is everything when treating cancer. So when I do my events and I’m battling mentally, I think about the kids suffering and compare their pain to mine. This motivates me to get over the finish line. Gordon also supports the Ethembeni School, and actively fundraises for the Cato Ridge Primary School that supports 270 disabled or visually impaired children. Q: Who keeps you going? A: I have fantastic teams around me – firstly, my wife and daughters who always support my antics and me. Secondly, my mother-in-law who lives just up the road. She looks after our kids every afternoon with all the cousins. Her support is priceless. Thirdly, my business partners and PA are legendary. And lastly, the KZN Cow Committee, who are the true driving force behind our success with CHOC, Cows in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Kearsney College Choir will tour New York City

In June, the Kearsney choir will once again represent Africa in the prestigious Rhythms of One World International Choral Festival, which commemorates the signing of the United Nations charter 70 years ago. The 55-strong choir will tour NYC performing at music landmarks such as the Hard Rock Cafe at Times Square, the Kaufman Music Center and the

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The tour will culminate with a mass choir performance in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations on 25 June.

New additions

Already renowned for its academic standards, Kearsney College will add an English Excellence Programme to its Maths and Science Excellence Programme next year. The school will also be adding international languages to its curriculum, with the following on offer from Grade 8/9 in 2016 – isiZulu, French, Mandarin, Latin, Italian, Hindi, Spanish and Portuguese. Mandarin has been an examinable curriculum subject taken through to matric since 2014. However, from next year the first Grade 10 Mandarin class will be introduced.

Office building in Durban CBD sold for R20m

L

ocal confidence in Durban’s city centre was recently confirmed when an eight-storey building in Dorothy Nyembe (Gardiner) Street was sold through Broll Auctions and Sales for just over R20m. The corner-site property, comprising a gross lettable area of 4,811m2, was acquired by a private KwaZuluNatal investor, says Frank Reardon, divisional director, Broll. “In fact, all the bidders for this highexposure, prime-located property

were Durban-based investors. There was huge interest in this property with over 40 serious and qualified buyers viewing it ahead of the auction date. T

rish Emmett, co-founder, Emmett Architects, has a well-deserved reputation for inspiring, sensitive design that melds old architecture with new. The firm has long been involved with Durban Point development, particularly heritage buildings, and gathered accolades for the exquisite restoration of dwellings in the stylish Dock Point development and the then Docklands Hotel. Drive down to the Point now, and there’s a fresh energy about it. Developers are throwing launch parties, buildings are being erected, others are being restored, and – one of the areas for improvement for life at the Point – rumours of restaurateurs and foodie retailers moving into the area, are rife. Emmett Architects is the architectural firm behind Bond Square, a mixed-use development on the corner of Albert Terrace and Browns Road, which connects the harbour to the beach.

Turn back the clock 140 years or so, and this precinct was a collection of bond stores – essentially, warehouses serving the sailing ships, where goods were held while awaiting payment, or stored while awaiting the payment of duties or tariffs. For the Bond Square precinct, one of the earliest bond stores at 16 Browns Road is being restored, while the larger one in Albert Terrace was sadly unable to be saved. Its front façade is being reconstructed, and the form of the early building will be retained in a contemporary, light structure housed in the ruins of the masonry walls. Added to the Sheds, will be a new, modern building with parking, offices and nine residential loft units with expansive decks looking towards the harbour. A swimming pool and rooftop deck will also face the harbour. “Pre-launch, and some of the units are already reserved,” says Cecily Deetlifs, principal, Tyson Properties uShaka.

“Prices start at R2,365m, and go up to R3,2m. Most units are around 106m2 internally, with three bedrooms, and some have enormous balconies (one has around 100m2 of decking).” Occupation is scheduled for October/ November 2017, while the Sheds could be ready as early as April/May 2017. It’s a good-looking cluster where Durban heritage meets contemporary styling. In addition, an attractive landscaped square on the corner is designed to provide parking by day for the retail component, and could be an ideal site for a night food-and-craft market. The developers are talking about a fine dining restaurant, and a fresh goods grocery component, for starters. Bond Square is one of a number of developments on the harbour side of the Point. And, as one resident says, “The harbour never sleeps, so it’s a neverending vista. It’s beautiful by night, better than the sea.” There you have it.

ina Soukop, Soukop Property Group, was recently named as the Business Person of the Year at the 16th annual FNB Business Awards. The initiative, which is run by FNB and the Italian-South African Chamber of Trade and Industries, recognises and rewards those who have contributed to economic growth through their individual commercial achievements. Soukop has been involved in the real estate industry for the last 38 years, starting off as a conveyancer before becoming an agent. “I joined an agency and was their top agent for four years before I decided to go out on my own. In 1998 my husband and I purchased a well-known franchise which we ran until 2007 when we launched the Soukop Property Group. With hindsight, it wasn’t the best time to open a new agency and the subsequent recession that ravaged the entire industry hit us hard,” she says. “It wasn’t the only problem we had to contend with. We’d bought a building in Florida Road which burnt down in 2009, and this meant we had to start all over again. However, all my staff were incredibly loyal and stayed with me – something for which I will be forever grateful because no man or woman is an

island, and no one can achieve success without the backing of a good team.” The agency has branches throughout KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town and Gauteng, and employs a team of 152 agents and administrative staff. “We are regarded as one of the top 20 real estate companies in Southern Africa and we have achieved this in only eight years. We are currently expanding and want to extend our footprint throughout Southern Africa and Europe. Being of Italian birth, we are looking seriously at opening up a branch in Rome, and possibly also in Germany.” She says the accolade means everything to her, her company and the real estate industry as a whole, and that she is humbled by the award.
