THINGS TO DO:
outhbroom, on the KwaZuluNatal South Coast, 140km away from Durban, is a picturesque village tucked between the Mbizane and Umkobi rivers.
“Surrounding the superb golf course, tennis courts and bowling club are quality homes set in well-maintained gardens, interspersed with parks and open spaces,” says Barbara.
With a history dating back to 1884, Southbroom is known for its three beautiful beaches, child-friendly tidal pools and lagoons, and breathtaking sea views. A climate that’s summery all year long and the warm Indian Ocean make enjoying water sports on the beach, such as swimming, snorkelling, diving, surfing, paddling and kitesurfing, the most popular way to spend the day. The Southbroom Golf Course (rated one of the finest holiday courses in the country); the nearby San Lameer, Selborne and Wild Coast courses; and numerous hiking and biking trails make the area paradise for local and foreign holidaymakers.
While freehold residential values have increased approximately 12% from 2012 to 2017, Southbroom still claims the lowest crime rate on the coast thanks to a strong community policing forum and vigilant residents, helped perhaps by the fact that it’s not directly on the N2.
Southbroom has a 4km stretch of beach, protected coastal bush, and is not scarred by high-rise hotels and apartment blocks. “There’s constant investment in the upgrade and renovation of private homes and talk of developing a retirement home,” says resident Barbara Reynolds.
“With a library, a strong ratepayers’ association and conservation group, Southbroom is treasured by the local community. We’re proud of our village which allows us to live in 21st century times with digital offerings, but still with some old-time charm and values,” says Barbara.
The tight-knit local community helps at carnivals and the conservancy, and everything from breeding chameleons to sightings of loggerhead turtles nesting on the beaches is cherished and protected. A warm welcome is extended to visitors, and the Southbroom Bowling and Tennis clubs are known to be lively and social.

My business neighbourhood Vivo Umhlanga is a designer venue that aims to wow its customers WORDS: ANDRÉ FIORE IMAGES: SUPPLIED
for approximately seven years. We’ve worked together on other projects and felt that our backgrounds would tie perfectly to give customers a venue where they can have gourmet modern dining meals with designer cocktails and still be entertained by a DJ or live artist. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: With the Umhlanga area burgeoning with new developments, we chose a site close to the village, yet far away enough to allow customers to feel as if they’re in a quieter, more sophisticated area, with a safe, private parking area. Q: How did you find your premises? A: They found us. They were offered to an associate of ours who offered them to us.
M
odern dining, according to business owners Kamil Sukdhoe and Aveshin Naidoo (also head chef), is about a cocktail lounge, wow-factor designer food, a vibey dance floor, and afterdinner drinks all in one upmarket venue. Kamil tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: Aveshin and I have been friends
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: There are two huge developments being built close by, so we have the benefit of being close to major centres while still having our own privacy – no kids with ice creams running past! The secure parking area allows customers to pull in for early cocktails and leave after the last dance – people no longer want the security risk of moving from venue to venue.
Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: They’re high, but in accordance with other upmarket commercial areas. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: It varies depending on the day of the week, generally not more than 220 per evening. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We plan to open other branches throughout South Africa, under the Vivo brand, ranging from cafes and coffee shops to other boutique restaurants and lounges like our flagship store. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have regular enquiries and bookings on Facebook (facebook.com/VivoUmhlanga). Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Ocean meets Meat, which comprises a 200g fillet steak and a crayfish tail, as well as our mango and chilli Martini, which is a blend of premium vodka and mango purée with a hint of fresh green chilli. People also love the vibe; it’s spacious, gracious and happening – you get everything from salsa dips to salsa classes at Vivo.
Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We’re surrounded by hotels, upmarket residential developments, and soon, the Oceans.

INTRODUCING FOREST VILLAGE RETIREMENT HOMES - PHASE 4 Brettenwood Coastal Estate, located just 10 minutes from King Shaka Airport and 30 minutes outside of Umhlanga, along one of the most exquisite stretches of coastline in KwaZulu-Natal, is excited to announce the launch of the final phase in their award winning retirement community, Forest Village.
Meet Rais and Cheryl Pearson Forest Village Retirement Homeowners Where are you originally from? Rais and I were both born in KZN. Rais was presented with a job opportunity in JHB, so we relocated to Benoni in 1983. We eventually returned to KZN in 2014. How did you come to Brettenwood? When we moved to Gauteng we left family in Umhlanga and Ballito so we would often return for holidays. It was still our ‘home’. Once we had both retired we longed for the warmer climate and peaceful lifestyle offered on the North Coast. We investigated several estates but we always seemed to be drawn back to Brettenwood. What activities do you do here? Living in this retirement community has introduced us to a world filled with warmth and a busy social life. Line dancing, pilates, bridge and regular social evenings are just a few things that have become part of our life. Rais is involved with a very active cycling group from Brettenwood and we both enjoy our regular walks and bird watching on the beautiful Estate. What do you love about the Estate? The Estate offers peaceful and tranquil living surrounds with beautiful views no matter where you are. We are fortunate to enjoy the ‘open door’ living without being concerned about burglar alarms and wire fences – Long may it last! Rais and Cheryl Pearson on their Wedding Day.
What’s your favourite thing to do in Brettenwood? When I ask Rais this question he always has the same answer – “NOTHING, because I didn’t finish doing that yesterday!”

New, contemporary apartment block for Sea Point
S
trand Beach, a contemporary five-storey apartment block in High Level Road, Sea Point, is the latest residential project by Atlantic Seaboard property professionals Berman Bros Group (BBG). The neighbourhood has achieved some of the highest property value growth rates in the country thanks to its superb natural geography, proximity to town and the Waterfront, and the outdoor, healthy lifestyle on offer. “We recognised the potential of this property a while ago and are very
excited to start work on realising BBG’s vision for this special location,” says Paul Berman, CEO, BBG. “The innovative design opens up each apartment to natural light and sweeping views over the Atlantic, while contemporary finishes add the final touch to what will certainly become a sought-after address in upper Sea Point. “The property’s elevated position on the slopes of Signal Hill allows for spectacular sea views and wind
protection, while its position in the middle of the Atlantic Seaboard gives easy access to both the city and Cape Town’s most popular beaches and attractions on the coastline.” Once complete, Strand Beach Sea Point will offer 34 residences within a secure, access-controlled perimeter, and comprising one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The ground floor apartments will have their own private garden and pool, in addition to the communal entertainment deck and pool area.
The deteriorating credit profiles of many tenants are becoming evident to landlords and to managing agents currently screening new tenants, and this is also confirmed by the latest TPN credit profile analysis. This shows that among active tenants, 4,2% shifted from having an “excellent” or “good” credit profile to having just an “average” profile in the 12 months to end-October 2016. Demand for mature lifestyle development continues
S
ales for highly sought-after units in Phase 3 of the Renishaw Hills mature lifestyle development will open later this year, with only four units still available in the Phase 2 development. Phase 1 of the development, which is nearing completion, includes 27 freestanding homes made up of two- and three-bedroom units, all of which have been sold. Occupation is planned for between August and December of this year with occupation of the 31 Phase 2 units planned for the first half of 2018. These include 19 freestanding homes and 12 maisonettes, with only four of the maisonettes still available for purchase. Residents who take occupation this year will be able to enjoy the facilities of the temporary Community Centre consisting of lounge and dining areas, an expansive patio
with ocean views, a games room, library and gym. Integrated into the Community Centre is a Care Centre providing residents with top-level medical attention. This will include a reception area, examination room and two-bedroom ward, all serving as a temporary measure before construction of the fully equipped 80bed Healthcare Centre begins in 2018. Rehabilitation of the wetlands area of Renishaw Hills, which started two years ago, is continuing under the direction of leading expert in rehabilitation in KwaZulu-Natal, Geoff Nichols, and renowned South African landscaper and botanist, Elsa Pooley. To this end, sugar cane is being eradicated, without the use of harmful chemicals, while invasive alien plants are also being identified and removed. The regrowth of indigenous flora is proving successful with plant species sourced from the local Izinyoni Indigenous Nursery.
